Understanding Warrior Lacrosse Heads: A Comprehensive Overview
Warrior is a leading manufacturer in the lacrosse industry, renowned for producing high-quality equipment since the early 1990s. Their lacrosse heads are particularly popular among players of all skill levels. But what makes Warrior lacrosse heads stand out in the competitive market?
Warrior lacrosse heads are known for their durability, innovative design, and performance-enhancing features. They offer a wide range of options tailored to different playing positions and styles, from attack and midfield to defense and goalie. The company’s commitment to research and development has resulted in heads that consistently meet the evolving needs of lacrosse players.
Key Features of Warrior Lacrosse Heads
- Lightweight yet durable materials
- Position-specific designs
- Innovative stringing patterns
- Optimized face shapes for improved ball control
- Advanced scoop designs for easier ground ball pickup
Are Warrior lacrosse heads suitable for beginners? Absolutely. While Warrior offers high-end options for professional players, they also provide excellent choices for those new to the sport. Heads like the Warrior Burn 2 offer a balance of performance and affordability, making them ideal for players looking to improve their skills without breaking the bank.
Top Warrior Lacrosse Heads for Different Positions
Choosing the right lacrosse head is crucial for maximizing your performance on the field. Warrior offers specialized heads for each position, ensuring players have the tools they need to excel. Let’s explore some of the top Warrior lacrosse heads for different positions:
Attack and Midfield
For offensive players, the Warrior Burn 2 lacrosse head is a standout choice. It has been redesigned with a slightly narrower shape, optimized for outside shooting. The engineered scoop and bottom rail promote scoop fold and back-rail pinch, allowing players to maximize shot power and accuracy from long distances.
Defense
Defensive players require a head that offers strength and control. The Warrior Regulator Max X Unstrung Lacrosse Head combines the best features of Warrior’s Revolution and Evolution lines. Its sturdy construction and wider face shape make it ideal for defensive play, allowing for easier checks and interceptions.
Goalie
Goalies need a head that can withstand high-impact shots while providing a large surface area for saves. The Warrior Nemesis 3 goalie head is engineered with Pro-Level stiffness to stop shots exceeding 100 mph. Its design focuses on maximizing the stopping area while maintaining the lightweight feel crucial for quick reactions.
Face-Off
For face-off specialists, the Warrior Burn FO lacrosse head is a top choice. Endorsed by face-off expert Trevor Baptiste, this head is designed to provide superior control and quick ball release during face-offs. Its specialized shape and flex points give players an edge in this crucial aspect of the game.
Stringing a Warrior Lacrosse Head: Step-by-Step Guide
Properly stringing your Warrior lacrosse head is essential for optimal performance. While the specific stringing pattern may vary depending on your position and personal preference, here’s a general guide to get you started:
- Gather your supplies: You’ll need your Warrior lacrosse head, mesh, string, sidewall string, and shooters.
- Attach the mesh to the scoop: Begin by tying the top of the mesh to the scoop of the head.
- String the sidewalls: Work your way down the head, attaching the mesh to the sidewalls using your chosen pattern.
- Tie off the bottom: Secure the bottom of the mesh to the throat of the head.
- Add shooters: Install shooter strings across the top of the pocket to fine-tune ball release.
- Adjust and test: Make final adjustments to ensure the pocket depth and ball release meet your preferences and league regulations.
Is it better to string your own Warrior lacrosse head or have it professionally strung? While professional stringing ensures a high-quality result, learning to string your own head can be beneficial. It allows you to customize your pocket to your exact specifications and make adjustments as needed throughout the season.
Innovative Technologies in Warrior Lacrosse Heads
Warrior continues to push the boundaries of lacrosse head design with innovative technologies. These advancements aim to enhance player performance and address common issues faced on the field. Let’s explore some of the cutting-edge features found in Warrior lacrosse heads:
Warp Technology
Warrior’s Warp technology revolutionized lacrosse head design by introducing a pre-strung, weather-resistant pocket. This innovation eliminates the need for traditional stringing and ensures consistent performance in all weather conditions. Heads like the Warrior Evo Warp Pro ML3 showcase this technology, offering players a ready-to-use option that maintains its shape and feel over time.
Sym-Rail Design
Many Warrior heads feature the Sym-Rail design, which provides a symmetrical rail structure. This design enhances the head’s overall stiffness and durability while maintaining a lightweight feel. The result is improved ball control and more consistent release points for passes and shots.
Loc-Throat Technology
Warrior’s Loc-Throat technology addresses the common issue of heads becoming loose on shafts. This feature allows players to insert a locking mechanism for a more secure head-to-handle attachment. Alternatively, players can opt to leave it out for a lighter setup, providing flexibility based on individual preferences.
How do these technologies impact player performance? The integration of these innovative features in Warrior lacrosse heads can lead to improved accuracy, consistency, and overall control. Players often report enhanced confidence in their equipment, allowing them to focus more on their gameplay and less on adjusting their stick.
Customizing Your Warrior Lacrosse Head for Optimal Performance
While Warrior lacrosse heads come with excellent out-of-the-box performance, customizing your head can take your game to the next level. Here are some ways to personalize your Warrior lacrosse head for optimal performance:
Pocket Depth and Style
Experiment with different pocket depths and styles to find what works best for your playing style. A deeper pocket can provide more ball control and hold, while a shallower pocket offers quicker release. Consider factors such as your position, shooting style, and league regulations when adjusting your pocket.
Mesh Selection
Warrior offers various mesh options, including traditional soft mesh, semi-hard mesh, and performance mesh. Each type has its own characteristics in terms of feel, durability, and weather resistance. Try different mesh types to find the one that complements your play style and local weather conditions.
Shooter String Configuration
Adjust your shooter strings to fine-tune your stick’s throwing and shooting characteristics. Experiment with different numbers, positions, and tensions of shooter strings to achieve your desired ball flight and release point.
Break-In Techniques
Properly breaking in your Warrior lacrosse head can significantly improve its performance. Some effective methods include:
- Wall ball practice to soften the mesh
- Using a wooden lacrosse ball to stretch the pocket
- Cradling a ball in the pocket when not in use
Should you customize your Warrior lacrosse head right away or play with it first? It’s generally recommended to use the head as it comes initially. This allows you to get a feel for its baseline performance and identify specific areas you’d like to improve through customization.
Maintaining Your Warrior Lacrosse Head for Longevity
Proper maintenance of your Warrior lacrosse head is crucial for ensuring its longevity and consistent performance. Here are some essential tips to keep your head in top condition:
Regular Cleaning
Clean your lacrosse head after each use to remove dirt, grass, and sweat. Use warm water and mild soap, gently scrubbing with a soft brush. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely before storage.
String Maintenance
Regularly check your strings for wear and tear. Replace frayed or broken strings promptly to maintain the integrity of your pocket. For Warp heads, follow Warrior’s specific care instructions to preserve the pre-strung pocket.
Storage
Store your lacrosse head in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it in hot cars or damp environments, which can cause warping or mold growth.
Seasonal Check-ups
At the beginning and end of each season, perform a thorough inspection of your head. Look for any cracks, loose screws, or signs of excessive wear. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
How often should you replace your Warrior lacrosse head? The lifespan of a lacrosse head can vary depending on usage, playing style, and maintenance. However, most players find they need to replace their head every 1-2 seasons for optimal performance. Pay attention to signs of wear, such as decreased stiffness or visible damage, to determine when it’s time for a replacement.
Comparing Warrior Lacrosse Heads to Other Brands
While Warrior is a leading brand in the lacrosse industry, it’s important to understand how their heads compare to other popular manufacturers. This comparison can help players make informed decisions when selecting their equipment.
Warrior vs. STX
Both Warrior and STX are well-established brands known for quality lacrosse heads. Warrior heads often feature more aggressive designs and innovative technologies like the Warp system. STX, on the other hand, is known for its traditional designs and consistent performance across all skill levels.
Warrior vs. Maverik
Maverik has gained popularity in recent years with its focus on player-driven design. While Warrior offers a wide range of specialized heads, Maverik’s lineup tends to feature more versatile options suitable for multiple positions. Both brands prioritize lightweight construction and durability.
Warrior vs. ECD
East Coast Dyes (ECD) is a newer player in the lacrosse head market but has quickly gained a following. ECD heads often feature unique flex points and face shapes, while Warrior focuses more on position-specific designs. Both brands offer high-performance options for competitive players.
Is Warrior the best brand for lacrosse heads? The “best” brand often comes down to personal preference and playing style. Warrior’s reputation for innovation and quality makes them a top choice for many players, but it’s worth trying heads from different manufacturers to find what works best for you.
Future Innovations in Warrior Lacrosse Head Design
As technology and materials science continue to advance, we can expect to see further innovations in Warrior lacrosse head design. While specific future products are closely guarded secrets, here are some potential areas of development based on current trends:
Advanced Materials
Warrior may explore new composite materials that offer even greater strength-to-weight ratios. This could result in heads that are lighter and more durable than ever before, allowing for improved control and reduced player fatigue.
Smart Technology Integration
The integration of sensors and smart technology into lacrosse heads could provide players with real-time data on shot speed, accuracy, and other performance metrics. This data could be invaluable for training and game analysis.
Customizable Flex Patterns
Future Warrior heads might feature adjustable flex points, allowing players to customize the head’s stiffness and flex pattern to their exact specifications. This could provide unprecedented levels of personalization and performance optimization.
Enhanced Weather Resistance
Building on the success of the Warp technology, Warrior may develop new materials and coatings that provide even better all-weather performance. This could include self-adjusting pockets that maintain consistent feel and performance in varying humidity levels.
How might these innovations impact the game of lacrosse? As equipment technology advances, we may see changes in playing styles and strategies. Improved accuracy and control could lead to higher-scoring games, while data-driven training could result in more specialized player development programs.
In conclusion, Warrior lacrosse heads represent a pinnacle of design and performance in the sport. From their innovative technologies to their position-specific options, Warrior continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in lacrosse equipment. By understanding the features, proper care, and customization options for Warrior heads, players can maximize their performance on the field and enjoy a superior lacrosse experience.

McGonigle, Zubey win races, Phoenixville, OJR win team titles at PAC Cross Country Championships – PA Prep Live
WORCESTER >> It wasn’t a case of the big schools dominating the small ones Thursday.
To be sure, the Liberty Division boys had the upper hand on their Frontier Division counterparts during the Pioneer Athletic Conference’s championship meet at Heebner Park. But on the girls’ side, the small schools held their own against the bigger ones … and then some.
Owen J. Roberts produced the individual winners — Andrew McGonigle for the boys, Claire Zubey for the girls. But while the Owen J. boys came away with the team title, Phoenixville ended up the girls’ team champion ahead of three traditionally-powerful big schools.
“It’s hard to believe,” Phoenixville head coach Eric Sprenkle said. “It’s so surreal.”
The Phoenixville girls cross country team poses together after winning the team championship at Thursday’s PAC Championships at Heebener park. Varsity runners pictured front row from left are Neveya Carr, Caitlin Omeacham, Alyssa Cunningham, Kenzie Padilla, Griane Reed, Josie Reed and Anna Carruthers. (Courtesy Daniel Cunningham)
Owen J. Roberts’ Andrew McGonigle crosses teh finish line to win the PAC Boys Cross Country championship Thursday at Heebner Park. (Owen McCue – MediaNews Group)
But the facts were solidly incontrovertible. The Phantoms placed three runners among the first six and four in the Top 10 for a total of 23 points ahead of teammate Nevava Carr’s 17th-place effort. The 40-point total was seven ahead of Roberts, which had only one runner other than Zubey (Ava Taylor, seventh) in the first 10.
Kenzie Padilla led Phoenixville’s big team showing, third behind Zubey and Pope John Paul II’s Gianna Cagliola. The Top 10 was split evenly between big and small schools, each placing five.
“It’s an honor to run against girls from great programs like those,” Sprenkle said after his squad win a team championship for the first time in its PAC membership. “It’s quite an accomplishment.”
The boys’ finish proved to be the closest of the two varsity races, McGonigle finishing just five seconds (16:11) ahead of Methacton’s Vaughn Lackman in a run he led basically wire-to-wire. Ironically, the race didn’t go the way he planned.
“It was not my goal coming in,” the OJR junior noted. “I wanted to be relaxed and be in the (front) pack. But with nobody pushing it, I just went to the front.”
Between McGonigle and teammate Thomas Damiani, who finished fourth in 16:41, were Lackman and Warrior teammate Bryan Landsberg (16:38). They crossed the line in that order ahead of Spring-Ford’s Quintin Smith, who clocked a 16:45.
“He was hanging on me the whole time,” McGonigle said of Lackman. “I tried to make my kick at the turn (into final straightaway), but my legs didn’t have it. I just wanted to hold my top speed.”

The third member of Methacton’s Top Three, Chris McGlynn, joined his teammates in the early push of McGonigle, who ran a 5:13 pace. McGlynn dropped back to a seventh-place (16:59) finish ahead of Phoenixville’s Yash Agnihorti (16:55).
“I didn’t want to take it out too fast,” Lackman said. “I just sat on him (McGonigle). I tried to make a few passes and make my move over the last 300, but I ran out of energy.”
Filling out the rest of the Top 10 were OJR’s Matthew Kwiatkowski (eighth, 17:01), the Phantoms’ Bryan Kerchner (ninth, 17:01) and Boyertown’s Cameron Kratz (10th, 17:19).
The girls’ race was also a wire-to-wire run for Zubey, who placed third when the meet was last run in 2019. She crossed the line at 19 minutes, more than a half-minute ahead of Cagliola (19:31). The Phoenixville duo of Kenzie Padilla (19:43) and Anna Carruthers came in 3-4 followed by PV’s Summer Watts (19:55), the defending girls champion.
“I went out a little fast,” Claire said. “My goal was I wanted to go out fast and be strong. After that, I was able to relax.”
For Cagliola, the defending District 1-AA race champ, the opportunity to run against the PAC’s bigger schools was a further solidification of her standing as one of the region’s top runners.
“It’s another year of maturity,” Lisa said. “Competition at a higher level … Claire pushed the rest of the field.”

Cagliola admitted to holding “a little bit of hope” for catching Zubey. But she amended her strategy after seeing the kind of lead Roberts’ fleet-footed junior had at the four-kilometer mark.
“It was stressful to get to her back,” she said. “I just wanted to keep my spot.”
Helping secure Phoenixville’s team championship were Griane Reed, sixth in 20:01; Alyssa Cunningham, 10th in 20;11; and Carr. It surpassed the Phantoms’ runner-up finish in 1990, when former PAC member Great Valley was in the third year of a four-year team-championship string.
“It was a matter of trusting the process of training,” Sprenkle said. “Not worrying about outcomes — they can be burdens — but staying focused.
“I have overwhelming gratitude for being able to coach these kids. “They have strong personal character … they’re united and focused on the goals they’re trying to accomplish.”
NOTES >> Upper Perkiomen’s Donnie Miller and Perkiomen Valley’s Tommy Bricker, placing a respective 11th and 12th, were their teams’ highest finishers. … In the girls’ race, Boyertown’s Alyssa Albanese (14th), Upper Perk’s Maren Landis (21st) and Methacton’s Devon Petrei (22nd) led their teams. … Next step in the post-season will be the District 1 competition returning to Lehigh University’s Goodman Complex next Friday (Oct. 29).

Hundreds Gather to Mourn Two WCSU Students Killed In Colchester
A memorial vigil that drew hundreds was held on Sunday in Colchester for two of the WestConn Lacrosse players that were tragically killed on Friday afternoon.
It was news that rocked the Western Connecticut State University community. Two of the school’s lacrosse players were tragically killed Friday afternoon in a car crash that also left one other passenger seriously injured.
Hundreds gathered to mourn the two Colchester residents, 18-year-old Jacob Chapman and 18-year-old Tyler Graham and were asked to wear red, the two boys favorite color. The vigil was held on the Colchester town green.
According to nbcconnecticut.com, the accident that took the students’ lives happened shortly before 1 PM on Friday on Lake Hayward Road near the intersection of Route 354, an intersection that police and the Department of Public Works were already working on plans to improve the safety of.
In an incident report released from Troop K, state police said Chapman was driving a red 2010 Nissan Altima westbound on Route 354 when he attempted to pass another car at a high speed. For an unknown reason, the car left the road and collided with a metal guardrail and multiple trees before stopping down an embankment, according to the incident summary.
Two of the passengers in the front seat, Chapman and Graham died either at the crash site or shortly after, and according to State Police, the third passenger, Trey Massaro, 19, of Dalton, Massachusetts, was airlifted to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries. The police report also says that the car the students were driving was going at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred.
Aside from the vigil held on Sunday, Western Connecticut State University is also planning a vigil for the students and the University’s counseling center has already met with the lacrosse team’s players and coaches. The school will also provide counseling to students and faculty and to any students in Litchfield Hall, where Chapman and Graham lived.
All of us here at Townsquare Media Danbury send our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.

– So, the first thing you do is squat your combat robot, check its stability. Then you tilt the body back to increase the firing range. This is the exercise you must master. This is a very useful trick.
– Thank you, Carew.
Phelan thanked the mentor who finished explaining. The exercise was really very difficult. Carew was short, graceful, and at the same time very strong and flexible – the usual type among the drivers of combat robots. A huge shock of blond hair made his head look like a ball, but most of all he was struck by his huge, childishly naive eyes. However, less than anyone else, he could be considered a child. This became especially clear when he sat down in the driver’s seat of a combat vehicle.
Carew shrugged.
– With such teachers as Natasha, Ranna and I, of course, you will pass the exams, you will pass the tests. The question is whether you will fight for the title of driver or elemental.
Then they went to the melee field. Both wore shorts and short sleeved shirts. Phelan and Carew walked down a densely grassy slope. The meadow stretched into the distance – to where the wide steppe stretched. The field itself was divided into separate sections, marked in a special way. Each site was divided in half, and circles were drawn on each half. In the center of the circles were squares with a side of two meters.
The participants of the competitions, who were on one of the grounds, wore helmets with nets on their faces, thick bibs lined with felt, leggings and elbow pads that protected their hands. The bibs were sewn with blue or red circles. The people were armed with sticks of different lengths, depending on the location of the player on the squares. At one end of these primitive fencing objects, rectangular nets were attached.Phelan noticed that the ranks of the defenders were mostly elementals – and their sticks were longer. All of them were as if on selection – tall, sturdy guys. The two-meter Event would not seem like a curiosity among them. They were opposed by the drivers of combat robots. In height and build, they resembled Carew. They held short sticks in their hands, which rotated in front of them with imperceptible speed. Goalkeepers were placed along the edges of the field – they had sticks in their hands about a meter and a quarter, but the nets were four times wider than those of the other participants.
Phelan was delighted:
– It’s lacrosse! We played it a lot on Outreach. All the time that I studied at Nigerling, I was part of the national team of the academy.
Carew nodded:
– That’s right, this is lacrosse, only our rules are slightly different. He raised his hand to warn Phelan’s question. – I have already talked with the historian, who chronicles Natasha’s deeds, about the differences in the rules here and there. The point is, if you enter the field with the firm belief that you know how to throw the ball, you will quickly die.
The players ran across the field, trying to take away a small white ball from each other. Those who had red stripes took possession of it and, throwing it to each other, finally sent the ball into the opponents’ goal. The goalkeeper caught him and returned him to the field.
“I don’t see much of a difference,” Phelan said, looking closely at the game. – Unless the players allow themselves to head bangs and grabs. This is a gross violation.
– Violation ?!
– You can’t poke the end of the stick into the ribs. For this a foul.
– Foul?
Just at that moment, one of the “gays” actually poked the “red” with the end of the stick. He flew to the ground.
“You see,” Phelan was delighted. – For this penalty.
– Phelan, we don’t have penalties here and these … what did you say? – fouls. I don’t even know what that means.
– How so? Phelan’s eyebrows went up. – If there is a game, there must be rules, and where there are rules, there must be violations.
He did not have time to finish – one of the elementals caught up with the short man and began to trample him.Phelan was sad.
– In general, we played in a similar way at Nigerling. I had something else in mind … – He paused. – All the same, we did not cross some line.
Carew smiled:
– Well, this little thing is worth a lot. If you are in possession of the ball, you are, as it were, considered “alive”. They are trying to knock you to the ground, take the ball away. If this succeeds, then your team is deducted points. You can hit back – this is even welcome, but while you are with the ball, you are a target. Each goal scored brings the team fifty points. Before the start of the game, each team has a hundred of them. It is difficult to score a goal, it is much easier to deprive an opponent of his points.
“Hmm, an interesting option,” Phelan remarked, then glanced around the playing field again. – Is it just a man’s game?
Carew snorted:
– Playing with women? What else was missing. No thanks. They are so angry. I understand that there is nothing worse than fighting against a woman. This game is still in bloom, so during the competition for the right to possess a generic name, getting a woman as a rival is, I can tell you, a present.
“I see,” Phelan nodded. – What do you think, if two new players enter the field, is it allowed?
– Maybe … I don’t know. They can take you on the team. The Reds represent the Ward House, the Blues the Demos House. They must take you.
– Should?
– Do you see the guy who scored the last goal? This is Vlad.As I recall, the only thing you can agree on is that some of you have no place on this earth.
“It is,” Phelan replied, frowning slightly. – What house are you from?
Carew hesitated a bit with the answer:
– I was born in Nigren.
– You talk about it as if a curse lies on this house.
– In general, it is so. I’m already used to this question. House Nygren never produced good pilots for war robots.
– Are you a bad pilot? Phelan wondered. Carew shrugged his shoulders:
– So it is generally believed. Twenty-five years ago, the Wolves defeated the Falcons in a great battle. House Nygren received hereditary material from House Malthus as a trophy. Everyone believed that there were genes in his chromosome bank that gave Malthus-born drivers some advantage in battle. I’m just from that line.
– So why are you so gloomy? If you don’t like this house, take part in the generic name competition.Prove that you have this very advantage.
Keryu chuckled:
– If only it were that simple. After the victory, the hereditary material of Malthus was put into action. Then there was a rumor that the Falcons slipped us not what we demanded. Some material from the pine forest … Scientists of the Wolf clan carried out thorough research and stated that hereditary cells are quite high quality and came to us just from the house of Malthus, but gossip has already gone for a walk. A stain fell on all of us from this lineage, so that we are ordered to participate in trials for the ancestral name through inclusion in the lists of houses.Actually, there are no official prohibitions, and they try not to talk about it out loud, but try to break through.
“Yes, tongues of evil are worse than proton cannons,” Phelan sighed. – And in battles, as I understand it, it is useless to get out of your skin, you will still not be allowed to be tested.
Phelan put his hand on Carew’s shoulder:
– Sorry friend, I didn’t know. All the same, I believe that you – it is you, with your skill and endurance – the path to the family name is not barred. When we return to the Inner Sphere, you will be able to show who is who in real battles. It immediately shows who is a warrior and who is a dude. Nobody can block you there.
– Maybe. – Carew pointed to the field: – Look, break. This is your chance to step into the game. I can recommend you. House Demos of the skinny ones. They are believed to have poor heredity. All their pets are too reckless and lose their heads in difficult situations. If you show yourself on the good side, then I will earn some points.
The young man laughed and walked over to a group of sweaty, resting players who were sitting on the grass outside the edge of the field. The balding man seemed familiar to him, he approached him. Precisely, he had to meet with him during training sessions.
– Sorry, you quiaff, aren’t you Emilio? The man drained a plastic water bottle and took out another one from the portable refrigerator.
– Oh, you must be Phelan.
– Right. Don’t you need a player? Emilio shrugged.
– Vlad! He shouted. – Would you like another fresh one? I was completely out of breath. I think Carter’s last blow landed between the ribs.
– Phelan? – Vlad was surprised. – How did Cyril decide to let you go? Do you really want to participate in such a rough game like this?
The young man turned around and noticed his old enemy, surrounded by players from the opposing team. Most of them also looked askance at the stranger. Their views were full of disdain and arrogance. Others – mostly elementals – kept themselves simpler.
– I don’t know anything about rudeness, Vlad. As I understand it, the purpose of this game is completely different. You need to score the ball into the goal, and how many times you hit or you get hit does not matter, quiaff.
Vlad’s eyebrows went up.
– Do you think it’s better to be beaten? Well, well … – He narrowed his eyes for a while, looked at Phelan, then nodded. – Well, you can join the game.
Phelan jumped over the bench and walked toward the pile of sports equipment. Picking up his uniform to fit, he walked over to the players. Vlad unexpectedly hit the bench with a stick:
– Leave this junk.
“I need to dress in something,” Phelan wondered.
– So you will get dressed. – Vlad pointed at Emilio with his stick. – Give him your armor. You will play on the right flank, Phelan. For my team.
“No, why should I undress Emilio,” Phelan protested. – There are mountains of everything that is required. Vlad paid no attention to him.
– Emilio, hurry up.
– As you command, commander.
He removed the bib and handed it to Phelan, then helped fasten the straps on his back.
– Why did you listen to him? Emilio chuckled:
– Look at me. I am already thirty-two, and I have no family name. Resign soon. It’s amazing how I was also accepted into the team. Hopefully, when they take me out of the military, maybe they will be trusted to educate the younger generation. Otherwise, they will be driven out to a factory or somewhere on a farm. The pension is small. You can live, but boring …
There was bitterness in Emilio’s voice. Only now Phelan felt with his skin how hard it was for the veterans who did not spare their lives for the sake of the Clan. What a veteran Emilio, only thirty-two. What then can we say about Natasha?
– Experience comes with age. Doesn’t that mean anything?
Emilio looked up at the sky, sighed, then replied:
– You still don’t understand a lot, Phelan. Experience! .. Is this what I pass on to the students on the simulator? Here, take these elbow pads, and along with them grab the experience I have gained playing lacrosse. Remember, when you have the ball, you are considered “live”. So try to pass the ball to someone as quickly as possible. In general, even when you pass it on, they will not leave you alone – they will beat you from all sides, although no points are awarded for this.
“I see,” Phelan nodded.
He helped Emilio pull off the rest of the armor, then pulled it over himself, straightening a short skirt over his hips. He looked at the elbow pads. Foam rubber over hard plastic … It’s okay. The gloves were still hot and damp with Emilio’s sweat, as was the mesh helmet.
Emilio knelt down, opened a green gym bag and pulled out a U-shaped piece of plastic. He sprayed it with a spray can and handed it to Phelan.
– Bite this and don’t move your jaws for ten seconds. This is a mouth guard, it protects the teeth. The aerosol will temporarily soften the plastic so that it will conform to the shape of your teeth.
Phelan nodded gratefully.
– Try to score some goals. We are losing sixty-seven to seventy-five. Pay attention to the defenders. See that big guy over there? This is Carter. He took me down.
Phelan nodded once more and, clicking the last padlock, ran out onto the field.
Meanwhile, thoughts of Emilio’s fate did not leave him. “What a society! He wondered. – What a morals! Such fine warriors are thrown out at the age when, in the Inner Sphere, a soldier is just getting into his best form. Do their hereditary programs produce more and more powerful fighters with each generation? I would not say. He gripped the mouthguard with force and, counting to ten, carefully unclenched his jaw. Indeed, the teeth seemed to be in armor. “Maybe here I can find the answer to this question.”
Vlad and the center from the house team Demos met in the central point of the field and rested their foreheads on their helmets. As soon as both teams lined up behind their captains, forming two huge turtles trying to push each other, the referee threw the ball between them. On the whistle, a desperate struggle for possession of the ball began. Vlad ducked under the opponent, then turned his left side, trying to push aside the alien captain. Step by step, he pushed him away, finally he managed to catch the ball with his net.Immediately, both turtles disintegrated, and the players scattered across the field.
Phelan ran forward, aiming straight for the gate. On the move, he made a false feint with his body – he indicated the direction of his movement, and he himself darted in the other direction. Carter fell for the ruse, cleared the area, and Phelan jumped into a strike position. From here he waved a stick, attracting Vlad’s attention, but for some reason he threw the ball to the other flank. The attacker rushed after him into the corner. Phelan changed position again, hoping that now he would be followed by a pass. No, the forward from the corner tried to hit the gate. The goalkeeper hit the ball and Carter picked it up.
“Stupid monkey!” Phelan swore deeply as he watched Carter carry the ball. Like eggs in a basket … One of the players of the opposite team tried to attack him – Carter calmly waited for a lunge, dodged and with all his might poked the end of the stick at the attacker’s chest, in the very center of the red circle. He, clutching his chest, fell to the ground. Phelan was furious – instead of covering his own section of defense, covering the man from the Demos team, he rushed to Carter. He held the stick with the blunt end forward, preparing to hit the enemy. Carter was shouted to be on his guard, he looked around and just as slowly began to run away from Phelan.
However, it could no longer be stopped. He caught up with Carter, knocked him to the ground, grabbed the ball and, bypassing the opponents who rushed to him, went into a shock position. Then he made a false swing and, when the goalkeeper fell for this trick, calmly brought the ball over the goal line, where he landed.
Phelan threw his stick into the air.Others screamed too. Vlad and Carter looked at each other in bewilderment, as if asking each other – who dared to behave so impudently. Phelan ran to Vlad:
– I could have scored a goal five seconds ago if you had just passed the ball when I opened.
– Carter held you.
– It seemed to you. And him too.
– You’re in luck, Phelan.
– Luck is what others call talent when they don’t have it, Vlad.
Evil lights flashed in the captain’s eyes.
– Well, we can still see if you are as good as you think. Go take your place.
Phelan went to the right flank.
“If I were Vlad,” he asked himself, “what would I do? Of course, I would have given the pass. ”
The Blues won the ball and threw it closer to the goal of Ward’s team. After a couple of quick witty passes, a shot was made on goal, but the goalkeeper was on the alert. He passed the caught ball to the defender, who sent it to the left flank.
As soon as the line of attackers crossed the middle of the field, the ball was passed from the left edge to the center, where Vlad picked it up. In the next second, he tossed it to Phelan. The captain threw the ball so high that the young man had to slow down. He glanced over his shoulder – Carter, angry, overwhelmed, was about to rush at him. Thank you for your trust, Vlad, Phelan flashed through his head. He clenched his jaw tightly and braced himself for the collision.
Phelan caught the ball with his back to Carter. He knew that even a brick wall would not stop this bully, but there was no time to come up with any trick. Is it possible to get it with a stick? He grabbed it closer to the net and, as Carter approached him, poked it with all his might with the blunt end. He aimed at the chest of a huge figure that blocked the sun.
Hit!
Carter stabs Phelan’s stick. A bone crunched – the big man seemed to hang in the air for a moment. The gloves slipped off his hands, and the next moment he collapsed to the ground with a noise.
The blow threw Phelan aside. Pressing the net with the ball caught, he stumbled several steps, but managed to stay on his feet. He immediately threw the ball to Vlad who was in front of the goal. He immediately drove him into the gate.
– Hey Vlad! Phelan shouted. – Great job. When we are together, we can crush anyone.
He turned and, putting his stick in the direction of Phelan, imitated bang-bang, then shouted:
– You are killed! – Then, approaching, he shared: – You know, our enmity with you smacks of something mystical. In the Free Republic of Rasalhag, parents scare children with mercenaries.
Phelan smiled:
– Here I am about the same. We may not like each other, but why can’t we cooperate? We are working towards a common goal.
– For a common goal? – Vlad laughed contemptuously. – The fact that you are here only confirms my words that I was very unlucky. Well, consider that you are one of us. Until the upcoming trials, which will prove to everyone what I have known a long time ago. You are nothing more than a stub of a degrading society. After the failed tests for the title of a warrior, your benefactors will throw you away as unnecessary.
– What if I can stand them?
– You can’t stand it. Not in six weeks, not in six years. You will lose anyway. – Vlad grinned. The scar that disfigured his face became very noticeable. “I promise you that I will be one of the drivers you have to fight. And remember, I will solve your riddle. Once and for all.
Phelan grunted and pointed to the lying Carter:
– You already had a chance, Vlad.It won’t get better. Now it’s my turn, and I assure you – I won’t miss.
Georgia Online (LJ) – LiveJournal
author: Hugo Arbatov
Since the third grade I live in Moscow, here, I graduated from high school and the University, here I grew up and was brought up, and here I realized that I am a Georgian, Having a Russian mother and a completely Russian environment and upbringing, I realized that, it turns out, I am a Georgian, although no, my Russian mother gave me a purely Georgian upbringing. It did not consist in the fact that you have to get up when the elders enter the room, be silent when the elders speak, and do not smoke in front of your parents. Her upbringing consisted in the fact that with all my heart and soul I absorbed her love for Georgia. At the age of 12, I began to read Konstantinë Gamsakhurdia, from whom I first learned what a great and long-suffering story a small, but not lost in the sand, times of Georgia has. Since then, not knowing the Georgian language, but trying to learn it with the help of the unfortunate Tsibakhashvili, I learned poorly, poorly, to write and speak Georgian very funny.
My first Georgian self-awareness manifested itself at the age of 16, when I received a passport and when asked by a passport officer about where I was born, I replied that it was in the city of Gagra, Georgian SSR, which was included in my first sickle, hammer-faced one.
In Soviet times, it was much easier to choose where to live and how, of course, within the Great and mighty, so after graduating from Univer, I strangled my father with the demand to be assigned to work in Georgia. Probably, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Georgian SSR, neither before nor, of course, after, which is quite understandable for objective reasons, it was 1989, did not know this.
My satisfaction with the fact that I work among my own people, that there is no limit to my career growth because of nationality, and everything depends only on my abilities, I was overwhelmed when I started my career.
But this did not last very long. In agony and perversion, Georgia began to wake up. Much later, already seriously studying the history of Georgia, I came to the conclusion that the only one who was more disadvantaged by the communist regime was my Motherland. The Bolsheviks did not want to take away the state language from anyone in the USSR, even from the Baltic republics. They tried to take away from Georgia, hundreds of dead.
They did not try to take the provinces away from anyone, in Abkhazia they blamed about joining the Krasnodar Territory, dozens of dead.Stalin, the Evil genius of Bolshevism, with a capital letter, but the Georgians, the Russians could not forgive and, having thrown them out of the mausoleum, received the wrath of Georgians who suffered and humiliated no less than others, and as a result, hundreds of dead. Why did the Georgians climb under the bullets when they protested against the debunking of the most disgusting cult? To this question, I probably have an answer today. In Georgia, thanks to Beria, there was the lowest figure for the arrest and subsequent execution of enemies of the people – 500 per year. In Ukraine, Khrushchev at that time had 15,000 and asked for more, for which, even Stalin sent him a note: – Quiet, you fool!
A friend of mine said two of the most brilliant, in my opinion, phrases, the first: They are jealous of us! At first I started to object something, but he explained to me that none of the foreigners ruled Russia, the Golstein princesses do not count, and then suddenly there were Georgians or Ossetians, different opinions, but Georgian prevailed, respectively, and more to Georgians claims and jealousy.
And then I heard another phrase from him, which amused me a lot. His house, which remained in Gagra, was subject to demolition, and my Abkhaz relatives gave me the idea that he would at least start some kind of renovation there, because the houses of Georgians who are being renovated are not demolished.
When I told him to send some workers there, he told me a phrase that I consider the most ingenious: Listen, if we go back there, then everything they build on my land will cost me 200 grams of TNT, and if we don’t go back there, what the hell do I need this house for ?!
What Ivanishvili is doing now is deeply disgusting and disgusting to me, Misha’s team did SOMETHING every day, because in the conditions of Georgian history, not very long ago Beria built Georgia, and earlier, only David Agmashenebeli, and in the 21st century Misha’s team …
My colleague, who continues to work all this time in the prosecutor’s office of Georgia, after Bidzedarastov came to power, was shocked when at the next board of the prosecutor’s office he saw employees who were expelled from the prosecutor’s office 9 years ago for all sorts of unseemly cases, but who felt confident at the next college after the arrival of the dreamers.
I am 47 years old and the only thing, for what and when I pay, is when I speak about Georgia.
I would like to end the cry of my soul with the words of a young man from “Nino and Ali”: Georgia always has such a history and destiny, but we sang, drank and we will dance!
90,000 Medieval and Renaissance entertainment guide – Knife
Why is the entertainment of the past so unbridled
Before we start talking about entertainment in times when there was no electricity, it is worth remembering the conditions of life – in order to better understand what accompanied the entertainment.First of all, we must not forget that leisure is the lot of young people, and they were young for a very short time – up to 30 years. Back in the 19th century, a 35-40-year-old man was no longer considered too young: Pushkin’s phrase about the fact that “into the room an old man of 30 years has entered, ”this clearly shows us – as well as the fact that Tolstoy Karenina was only 28 years old at the time of her death.
So people had few chances to live for their own pleasure, especially since the working day of peasants, for example, lasted all daylight hours, and for city residents it sometimes reached 14 hours. In general, until the 17th-18th centuries, life in the countryside was even better than in the few “megalopolises” – at least a peasant might not be as worried about food as a city dweller.
The working week lasted 6 days (if not all 7), and it was possible to rest only on Sunday, as well as during church holidays, which in Catholic countries numbered about 15 a year.
There was nothing to be happy about: even when there was free time, it was somehow awkward to enjoy life.Firstly, epidemics of diseases constantly raged, mowing down entire cities (remember, at least the plague epidemics), and secondly, the church actively opposed amusements and pleasures, because life is suffering, where laughter has a devilish origin, as well as sexual games , and even more so an orgasm. Even the most righteous person is a sinner, so there is no need to talk about pleasures.
In these conditions, it is not so easy not only to rejoice, but simply to live. This explains the degree of licentiousness and licentiousness to which people sometimes reached during mass holidays, as well as the general rudeness of entertainment.Fist fights and “tossing foxes” into the air seem like sheer nonsense when a third of your population lives (or does not live) with severe physical injuries.
The historian Olga Brileva cites curious statistics on this subject: “The male population of Moscow in the 15th century was particularly aggressive. Every third Muscovite has head injuries. Such a high level of traumatism is found in Russia only in the border zone of the pre-Mongol period. ”
However, as you know, “even under the ice water flows”: even in these conditions, people found ways to have fun.
Option 1. Flirt and have sex
At all times, one of the main human pleasures was sex – the Middle Ages and even more so the Renaissance were no exception to the rule.
Surprisingly, even during the so-called classical Middle Ages, when the church was a fashionable and influential institution, there was still room for flirting and love affairs.
One of the most popular places to meet were dance houses, which existed in cities and villages. They differed only in scale: in cities, as a rule, they were built in several floors: on the upper ones people of noble birth danced, and on the lower ones – those who were poorer. Often, such establishments were connected by special “corridors” with taverns and grocery stores, so that people could have fun without stopping. But the funniest thing is that these houses were often located directly opposite the city hall or church, which annoyed the clergy a lot, but their struggle with the townspeople went on with varying success.
Although dancing in and of itself cheers up, it was made even more attractive by the behavior of women, who tried to jump as actively as possible so that their skirts rose higher, thereby exposing an unprotected body.
For the same purpose, the partners especially diligently threw their temporary chosen ones into the air: it is curious that in German this technique was called “bait” (verkodern).
After the jump , the girl fell to the floor with her skirt lifted, and at that moment all the other dancers of both sexes pretended to stumble and fell on each other, trying to snuggle closer to someone else’s body.
In general, as one of the German proverbs of those years said: “A girl who goes out to dance rarely returns without plucking.”
It was also possible to get to know each other in a pub, however, only not the most wealthy girls could go there: rich ladies were watched by their educators and fathers, and in simpler families, a peculiar form of emancipation was already in use in the 16th century.
Thomas Platter, a Swiss tourist, recalled in his book Traveling England: “There are a myriad of inns, taverns and open air pubs where you can have fun with food, drink, violin and more. For example, musicians came to our inn almost every day. What is especially curious is that women, as well as men, in fact, even more often than men, visit taverns and pubs for entertainment. They are very pleased if they are invited there and offered to drink wine with sugar; and if only one woman is invited, then she will bring three or four more friends with her, and they will merrily drink to each other’s health. The husband will then thank him for giving his wife such pleasure, as they consider it a true courtesy. “
During the Renaissance, the so-called public spinning mills became very popular. Once or twice a week, girls gathered in the same room in the company of more mature ladies and dealt with yarn. The guys also joined this lazy occupation: they sat behind the girls, and their main duty was to brush the hemp from the knees of their chosen one. Naturally, some young people each time allowed themselves more and more, and, if they were lucky, could secretly kiss the girl.
However, it all looks very chaste: for the bolder people, the public bath, where both women and men came to wash, became an ideal place for acquaintances.
At the same time, the partition between the halls was often extremely symbolic and low, and the dress code in the room cannot be called strict. Men and women wore a kind of “aprons” that covered only part of the body. Therefore, everyone could see the “product by face”.
As for sex itself, here in the Middle Ages there was a clear doublethink: on the one hand, the church argued that to enjoy sexual intercourse (and in general to lust, including your spouse) is a sin.On the other hand, courtly romances, as well as the songs of the troubadours, sang love: often it was not love between a husband and wife, but between a beautiful lady and some visiting knight. Curious ideas about love also existed in the so-called Qatari heresy, which the Inquisitor Jacques Fournier fought against (and wrote about) in the 14th century in Occitania. The locals were sure that having sex with a person whom you truly love (even if it is not the one with whom you are married) is not a sin at all, but an act consecrated by God.
However, if a person was not interested in romantic feelings, but he still wanted sex, he could turn to prostitutes, who were enough in Europe both in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. Brothels were illegal, but everyone knew very well about the existence of such establishments.
Sex workers of that time – by no means always a former servant who was “knocked out” and kicked out of the house by the owner, it seems to us. Often this occupation was the only available means for a woman to earn “start-up capital”: many prostitutes subsequently opened their own small shops and kiosks, leaving the brothel.
In brothels of the Middle Ages, one could find not only mature girls, but also children: the age of consent in England, for example, until the end of the 19th century, began at the age of 12. However, the punishment for having sex with a girl could only be received if she was not yet 10 years old – thus, with children from 10 to 12 years old, you could do anything that many men used.
Option 2. Enjoy other people’s torment
Attending various executions was a very popular leisure activity. And when no one was sentenced to capital punishment, one could look at the torture of a violator of the law.
Theatricality was one of the key features of any punishment.
That is why, much later, Michel Foucault said in his book “Discipline and Punish”, talking about the penitentiary system of the 19th century: “The theatricalization of suffering is excluded from punishment. The era of punitive restraint begins. ” It is not surprising that with a lack of entertainment, executions became a substitute for them, especially since some of them were interactive. In the Middle Ages, pads were actively used – there were even pads for fingers – which were applied to thieves and, for example, to husbands who let their hands go. A convict, shackled in stocks or tied to a pillory, was left in the middle of some city square without protection, and anyone who wanted could throw a rotten tomato or even a stone at him – cases when a criminal simply did not live to be released were not uncommon. It was also a pleasure to see the use of a chair for dipping in water – it was used most often against too zealous and wayward women in order to cool their ardor.
However, such complex devices were not always used: public flogging was popular in Europe until the 18th century.
Flogging of prostitutes enjoyed particular success: in many cities of the Old World it was customary to flog prostitutes naked (for the first time they thought of this in Great Britain), so there were a lot of people who wanted to watch such punishment.
However, nothing could compare with the spectacle of executions – even an ordinary hanging or beheading drew many people. The whole city gathered along the streets along which the convict was led, and the very next day in all squares they sold “poems” in honor of the executed with their “last words.” In this area, there were also sensations – real “gala shows”, which gathered thousands of people.
A huge crowd at one time came to see the execution of Major General Thomas Garisson, a supporter of Oliver Cromwell. He was not killed immediately: first, Garisson was dragged through the entire city, then they literally began to cut him into pieces, and only then they ripped open his stomach.Of course, in the crowd there were many sympathetic to the convict, however, there were also enough simple joyful onlookers.
They say, by the way, that the Major General behaved extremely bravely and in every possible way argued with his executioner, pouring him with choice curses.
This arouses respect, since usually the convicts tried to please their executor in order to avoid additional suffering. So, Thomas More said to his executioner: “Brace yourself, man, and do your job.My neck is short, aim better and don’t hit sideways, for the sake of preserving your honor. ”
Option 3. Have fun at the fair
Nothing warmed the soul like a fair. They were different: some of them were arranged monthly in “regional centers”, and some were held once a year – as a rule, in large commercial cities like Paris, Bruges or Hamburg. At the fairs, in addition to outlandish goods from other countries, there were all sorts of entertainment: one could see “werewolves”, which were passed off as ordinary overgrown people, dwarfs, trained animals, disabled people, lepers and many others. But the greatest attention was attracted by the performances of minstrels and trouvers, who sang verses on biblical or state themes.
Fair workers were treated with distrust in society. For example, in one of the innumerable poetic novels about Bevis Hampton, the hero of the chivalric epic, jugglers are described as follows: “A juggler is an unworthy person; he spends his entire life gambling, in taverns or worse places. As soon as he gets some money, he drags it there right now. When he has nothing, he goes to the Jew and pawns him his musical instrument. It is a pity to look at him, tattered, barefoot, without a shirt in the north wind, in the rain. ” And this despite the fact that not everyone could become a juggler.
It is interesting that the main competitors of musicians and poets were dancers, jugglers and acrobats, and from decade to decade the tastes of the public in this sense changed. In part, it was precisely because of the changeable morals of people that representatives of the “creative professions” had a hard time: the only chance of survival they had was only if some rich nobleman attached them to his home theater.Otherwise, their age was short-lived: constant wanderings, an avid audience for beatings, frequent lack of earnings and “industrial” injuries did their job.
The average age of acrobats was 14-15 years, and they rarely lived longer than 20-25 years. By the way, acrobats were fiercely hated by clergymen and advocates of morality. They say that it was with them that wives most often cheated on their husbands – and this is quite understandable, given their fit bodies.
The Thirteenth Century Teaching of the Troubadour Guiraud de Calançon to the Juggler says: “He must play different instruments; twirl balls on two knives, throwing them from one edge to another; show puppets; jump over four rings; get yourself an attached red beard and an appropriate suit to dress up and scare fools; train the dog to stand on its hind legs; know the art of the leader of the apes; to excite the laughter of the audience with a funny depiction of human weaknesses; run and jump on a rope stretched from one tower to another, making sure that it does not yield … “
Option 4.View show
Various performances were given by both professional itinerant actors and amateurs who united in “drama circles” in a particular city. The organizers of fairs and city authorities turned to their help on the occasion of big holidays. In the first case, it was, as a rule, about farcical performances and puppet shows, and in the second – about miracles, mysteries and morality. The fact is that many genres were closely associated with church events, and representatives of religion were categorically negative against professional actors – although, however, sometimes they were allowed to perform “soul-saving” performances, but extremely rarely.
Miracle. If in Ancient Greece one of the most important dramatic techniques was “the god from the machine”, then in the Middle Ages it was replaced by the concept of “miracle”. Miracli were closely associated with the present day and the troubles of people: heroes were kidnapped by pagans, feudal lords mocked them, and robbers tortured them. And only a miracle that happened unexpectedly saved the laborers from various cruelties of fate. How can you not believe in God?
Farce. Perhaps the most popular genre of all.It was in the farce that the aspirations of the common man and his views on the world were expressed: in the dramatized actions, obscene and vulgar to the extreme, feudal lords and clergy were ridiculed.
Naturally, the authorities and the church were against such ideas, but there was almost nothing they could do about it.
Everyone understood that performances help people somehow come to terms with the state of affairs and “let off steam.”
Be moral. As the name implies, we are talking about “soul-saving” performances, which in an allegorical form show the opposition of good and evil within each person. The performances were often directly related to recent real events, and also not devoid of farcical elements.
Mystery. Like the miracles, the Mysteries were an important part of church holidays and served to “educate” people about the Christian religion. At least that was how it was intended: however, the longer this genre existed and the “deeper” it went into the people, the less it was religious and more heroic. The characters here were saints and angels, and the background was the reality described in the Old Testament.Over time, the heroes of the mysteries began to resemble more and more superheroes fighting evil.
Puppet show. Only in the 18th century, puppet shows were created for children – until that moment they were watched exclusively by adults. Conventionally, such representations were divided into religious – dedicated to Old Testament subjects – and comic. In the second case, the plots were built around everyday problems: an unfaithful wife cheats on her husband, an alcoholic spouse tortures his faithful, children do not obey their parents, etc.d.
Option 5. Take part in the city party
Large celebrations were held for various reasons and, by the way, quite often: an important event in the family of a district prefect, feudal lord or king poured into folk festivities – as well as a meeting of a crowned person in a particular city where he came on a visit. However, the really big holidays – carnivals and masquerades – were held before Christmas and especially before Easter, when people were in a hurry to enjoy life before moving on to abstinence.
Descriptions of such celebrations are abundant in the satirical novel Gargantua and Pantagruel by François Rabelais. So, for example, the author depicts one of the carnivals: “Devils dressed up in wolf, calf and lamb skins, put on ram heads, put on some bull horns, some hefty slingshots from the grip and girded with thick belts, on which hung huge, removed bells from cow collars and bells removed from mules – the ringing was unbearable from them. Some carried black sticks filled with gunpowder in their hands, others carried long burning embers and at every intersection poured crushed tar on them in handfuls, which caused a column of flame to rise up at the same moment and poured terrible smoke. “
In general, carnivals and masquerades were designed to laugh at the dangers and injustices of life: at diseases and oppression from the authorities, at death itself, which is why even the plague did not stop them. At the same time, despite the riotous fun, even such holidays had some rules – it was impossible to blaspheme frankly, jokes were supposed to ridicule abstract characters, and not specific people. Naturally, the church authorities now and then tried to fight such amusements, but they could not do anything: often the priests themselves took part in the masquerades.Although there were also irreconcilable fighters for piety.
Edouard Fuchs, in his History of Morals, mentions the recollections of one of the witnesses of the celebrations at the French court in 1389: “At night, everyone put on masks and allowed themselves such antics that are more worthy of buffoons than such noble persons. This harmful custom of turning night into day and vice versa, together with the freedom to drink and eat immensely, led to the fact that people behaved in a way that should not have behaved in the presence of the king and in such a sacred place as the one where he kept his yard.Everyone tried to satisfy his passion, and the rights of many husbands were violated by the frivolous behavior of their wives, and many unmarried ladies completely forgot all shame. ”
Option 6. Go to a knight’s duel
If the knights themselves as a class appeared around the 8th century, then knightly tournaments gained popularity around the 10th century. True, not everyone could go to such a performance: as a rule, such spectacular competitions were arranged in honor of major events – the conclusion of an alliance, a wedding in a noble family – so that the poor strata of the population were not always allowed to the stands. In addition to the one-on-one battle, more spectacular tricks were also popular – buhurts, when the knights had to storm a specially built wooden fortress. It is curious that ordinary people, who were not allowed to these “holidays of life”, arranged their amusing battles, mainly within the framework of the same carnivals.
A knight in the “folk” performance rode into the streets of the city on an old nag, and on his head was not a helmet, but an inverted basket.
Nevertheless, such warriors fought in earnest, so that often after amusing tournaments people were left disabled or at least with good bumps in half their heads.
Option 7. Go hunting
Another occupation that was available to exceptionally wealthy gentlemen was hunting. As a form of entertainment, hunting appeared around the 5th-6th centuries, when the feudal system began to take shape in Western Europe more or less. Approximately from that time on, on the engravings and paintings of the artists, you can see how the nobility travels to nature to hunt – not for food, but as entertainment. This is supported by the rich clothes in which the hunters dressed up, as well as the large number of retinues.
Quite often the hunt took place not on an unknown animal, but on a specific wild boar or fox, which was specially released before the “entertainment”.
Separately, it should be said that many servants competed for the honor of hunting together with the master, since hunting was a very “intimate” affair, and the people responsible for the special equipment of the aristocrat enjoyed great honor. So, one of the most prestigious professions in the castle under the feudal lord was the position of a falconer – he was dressed in velvet, and his appearance was in no way inferior to other representatives of wealthy families.
Option 8. Visit the church
Before street theatrical performances appeared (around the 12th century), the church was the only place, apart from the palace of the master, where performances could be seen, albeit exclusively on religious themes. Of course, they were much more restrained than those later played by professional actors, but also not bad, since there are no other options. In addition, it was in the churches that people became familiar with music: it was there that the organ could be heard from the 6th century, and although this instrument was used to “whip up the atmosphere” in order to demonstrate the greatness of God and the insignificance of man, it still brightened up the dull everyday life.In addition, weekly trips to church were also a reason to “go out” – that is why all the latest rumors and gossip were discussed here, and also demonstrated their outfits.
Option 9. Spend time with friends playing some game
Cards. No one knows when the card game appeared in Europe or where it was invented. There are different versions: that they were first invented in China, in Egypt, in India, or, for example, that they were invented by the gypsies.
There is a version that the cards were invented in the XIV century by the painter Zhikomin Gringoner, who entertained with the game of the mad king of France Charles VI – supposedly only cards brought him into a calm mood.
In any case, almost immediately after their appearance, the cards began to be persecuted by the church, and in some places by the official secular authorities. The whole fault was that the cards were used for fortune-telling – and whoever did not guess by them, he arranged gambling, which was also not welcomed.
Chess. This game came to Europe in the 9th century and immediately gained great fame among the nobility, who had time for this brooding entertainment. True, if you believe some of the novels that appeared in the Middle Ages, chess was an unsafe occupation: often angry opponents pounced on each other after an unsuccessful move or conviction of cheating.
Billiards. It is generally accepted that it appeared in Europe in the 15th – 16th centuries, but it is impossible to establish this exactly – as well as the place of its origin. According to one version, billiards appeared in Northern Europe, initially becoming the home version of croquet.
Cambok. Most of all, this game resembles football: two teams of five are trying to score the ball into the opponent’s goal.
Bowling. Oddly enough, this entertainment, today associated exclusively with the United States, appeared in Europe in the 13th century. Then people set wooden blocks next to each other and threw stones at them – the winner was the one who knocked down more “pins” at one time.
Curiously enough, this “prabowling” was so successful in England that the soldiers devoted more time to it than to archery lessons – they say the authorities were furious.
Lacrosse. A longtime progenitor of modern hockey: two teams try to score the ball into the opponent’s goal using their feet and special sticks.
Ducks and Drakes. The complex name hides a common game familiar to everyone: a flat stone must be launched as far as possible on the water. Contact with water is marked by alternating cries: duck – drake, duck – drake. The winner is not the one who launches the stone the farthest, but who guesses at what point he will go under the water – on a “duck” or “drake”.
Keela. A popular game in the Novgorod Republic. Most of all, it resembles modern American football: two teams are trying to get the ball into their opponent’s zone.In this case, you can use both hands and feet. Well, if a scuffle arises during the course of the game, so much the better.
Dice game. It was invented in ancient Egypt and through Rome came to Europe. In the Middle Ages, the dice game experienced its true heyday – everyone played, especially among the nobility and clergy. It is curious that the representatives of the church were fond of this activity, despite the protests of the official Vatican: as you know, the bones were used not only for playing, but also for fortune telling, therefore they were strictly persecuted by religion.
Throwing a fox. Perhaps the most dubious entertainment you can think of. The essence of the game was that in a certain limited space in nature, two people stood opposite each other. A sling was placed between them in a loose form and then the fox was released.
When the fox ran through the middle of the players, they had to pull the sling sharply to launch the fox into “free flight”. The winner was the team that would throw the animal as high as possible.
However, not only foxes were used: badgers, hares, and other small animals were also taught to fly.
Ice skating. Skates spread throughout Europe thanks to Holland, which inherited them from the Vikings. By the way, skates came to us from the Netherlands, thanks to Peter the Great. The first literary mention of this type of entertainment dates back to the 12th century.
Monk Stephanius wrote The Chronicle of a Noble City of London, in which he said: “When a large swamp, washing from the north of the city rampart at Moorfield, freezes over, whole groups of young people go there to play sports on ice. Some, striding as wide as possible, glide quickly. Others, more experienced in ice games, tie the tibia of animals to their feet and, holding sharp-tipped sticks in their hands, at times push them off the ice and rush as fast as a bird in the air or a spear launched from a ballista … “
Epilogue
The difference between public entertainment in the Middle Ages and in the same XVIII-XIX centuries is explained not only by technical progress and the conditional lack of electricity. In the eighteenth century, the very structure of society and the established system of values gradually began to change, large empires were formed, the church was weakening. The state pays more and more attention to a person’s personal life, including the quality of this life – at least if we are talking about representatives of the upper strata of society. That is why full-fledged public spaces are gradually being created.
At the beginning of the 18th century, one of the first public libraries started operating in Russia, and already in the next century an extensive system of museums began to form.At the same time, tourists also appear – not as individual daredevils, but as a “class”.
Public holidays are losing their “nationality”, becoming an important part of the country’s life: they are prepared for them deliberately, investing significant money in the celebrations and, of course, bringing the ideology needed by the government. Over time, the spontaneous, carnival elements in wide festivities remained less and less until they almost completely disappeared in the second half of the 20th century.
90,000 Weekend Reading: Separate Peace
I recently went to the Devon School, and, oddly enough, it seemed to me newer than it was fifteen years ago when I studied there. And calmer than I remembered her, more “upright” and austere, with narrower windows and shinier wood paneling, as if everything had been varnished to preserve it. However, fifteen years ago there was a war. Probably the school was not supervised so well at that time – perhaps the varnish, like everything else, went to the military.
I will not say that I really liked this new brilliance of it, because now the school looked like a museum, which, in essence, it was for me, although I really did not want it.Deep in my soul, where the feeling is stronger than an unspoken thought, I always felt that the Devon School began its existence on the day I entered it, remained real and full of life while I studied in it, and died out like a candle in that the very hour when I left her.
Nevertheless, here it is in front of me, preserved by someone’s caring hand with the help of varnish and wax. Preserved with her, like stagnant air in an unventilated room, and the well-known fear that surrounded me and filled those days so tightly that I did not even realize it, because, not knowing another state, outside of this fear, I did not even know about it presence.
But now, looking back fifteen years ago, I saw with the utmost clarity what fear I was living in then, and this must have meant that during the elapsed time I managed to do something very important: get rid of it.
Now I heard the echo of that fear and felt a violent, unrestrained joy that was its other side, an accompaniment, and which even in those days sometimes burst out, illuminating life like the northern lights against the background of a black sky.
There were two places that I wanted to see now. Both are scary, and that’s why I wanted to see them. That is why, after having breakfast at the Devon Hotel, I went to school. It was a chilly, indefinable time of the year towards the end of November, damp, like a lamenting November day, when every lump of dirt becomes visible. Fortunately, this kind of weather is rare in Devon – icy shackles of winters or radiant New Hampshire summers are more typical for him – but that day it was raining and a bleak gusty wind blew.
I walked down Gilman Street, the best street in town. The houses here were beautiful and as unusual as I remembered them. The street was lined with carefully modernized old colonial estates with natural wood outbuildings in Victorian style and spacious, temple-like houses in the style of the Greek Renaissance, as impressive and unapproachable as always. It was not often that I saw anyone walk in or play on the lawn in front of them, and even an open window was rare. Now, with drooping ivy on the walls and bare weeping trees all around, these houses seemed more elegant and even more lifeless than usual.
Like all good old schools, the Devonian was not fenced off with walls and gates, but rather naturally grew out of the city that gave birth to it. Therefore, approaching her, I did not experience the suddenness of the moment of meeting; the houses along Gilman Street started to get even more inaccessible, which meant that I was close to the school, and then even more devastated, which meant that I was at school.
It was the beginning of the day, the grounds and buildings were empty, as everyone went to sports activities. Nothing distracted me as I crossed the wide courtyard, called the Far Pond, and walked towards a building, as redbrick and proportional as all the other large buildings here, but topped with a spacious dome with a bell under it and decorated with a clock and a Latin inscription above the entrance, it was the First Academic Building.
Entering through the revolving door, I found myself in a marble lobby and stopped at the foot of a long march of white marble steps. Although the staircase was old, the steps in the middle were shallow. The marble must have been unusually hard. It seems that it was most likely, although, as far as I remembered, the thought of his exceptional firmness never crossed my mind. It’s amazing that I missed such an important fact.
I did not notice anything else remarkable; it was certainly the same staircase that I walked up and down at least once a day throughout my Devonian life. She was the same as always. And I? Well, unlike the stairs, naturally, I felt matured – from that moment I began to evaluate my emotional state in order to understand how irreversible my “recovery” was, – I became taller and larger. I now had more money, I became more successful and more confident than when the specter of fear followed me up these steps.
I turned around and went out into the street again. The yard was still empty, and I walked to the far end of the school grounds along wide gravel paths between prim New England elms that looked like Republican bankers.
Devon School is sometimes called the most beautiful school in New England, and even on such a bleak day it lived up to the title. Its beauty consisted of small orderly spaces – a spacious courtyard, trees, three identical dormitories, a ring of old buildings – coexisting in common harmony. But there was a feeling that discord could begin at any moment, in fact, it had already begun: an outbuilding with a large bare Venetian glass window was attached to the dean’s residence, an impeccably authentic colonial house.Perhaps one day the dean will live in a house made entirely of glass and feel as happy as a sandpiper. Everything in Devon slowly, gradually changed and slowly, gradually came into line with what it was before. So it was logical to assume: if buildings, deans and class schedules can, then I can, changing, achieve harmony. Or maybe, without knowing it, he could already.
I probably should have understood this better when I got to the second place of those that I came to see. Therefore, I wandered past strictly proportional red-brick dormitories, entwined with cobwebs of ivy thrown off the foliage, through an abandoned section of the city that wedged a hundred yards into the school grounds, past a massive sports complex, at this hour filled with students, but outside as quiet as a monument, past a covered sports arena , which was called the Cage – I remember, in the first weeks of my stay in Devon, after hearing enough mysterious mentions of the Cage, I decided that this was a place of severe punishments – and finally went out onto a vast tract of land known as playing fields.
The Devon School was famous for both academic success and the athletic achievements of its students, so the playing fields were spacious and, except for this time of year, always crowded. Now they spread out around me, soaked in water and empty; the pitiful tennis courts on the left, the giant soccer, American football and lacrosse fields in the center, the forest to the right, and at the far end, in front, a small stream, only recognizable from here by the few bare trees along the shore. The day was so gray and foggy that the opposite bank, where the small stadium was located, could not be seen.
I embarked on a long, arduous journey through the playing fields and, only having passed some segment, I noticed that the soft earthen slime irreparably ruined my city shoes. But I didn’t stop. In the middle of the field, small pools of dirty water formed, which had to be bypassed, while the shoes that had already completely lost their appearance made a disgusting chomp every time I pulled my foot out of the swamp. In this open place, nothing protected my face from the sharp gusts of wet wind; at any other time, I would have felt like a fool, squelching in the slush in the rain just to look at the tree.
There was fog over the river, so when I approached it, I found myself fenced off from everything except the river itself and a few trees on the bank. Here the wind blew continuously and I began to freeze. I have never worn a hat, and this time I forgot my gloves. In front of me were several trees, vaguely looming through the mist.Any of them could be the one I was looking for. It seemed incredible to me that there were now other trees growing here that looked just like mine. According to my recollections, it towered over the river like a giant lonely peak, formidable, like an artillery piece, and long, like a bean stalk. Nevertheless, here it is – a rare grove, none of the trees in which was particularly impressive.
Walking along the wet, cold grass, I began to carefully examine each of them and finally recognized the one I was looking for by the small notches on the trunk, a large branch stretching over the river, and a thin outgrowth nearby. It was that very tree, and it reminded me that men, who seem to us to be giants in childhood, many years later turn out to be not just shorter than you grew up, but small regardless of everything, shrunken with age. From such double belittling, former giants turn into dwarfs.
The tree was not just bare, which is natural at this time of the year, it seemed to be tired of the past years, weakened, dried up. I was grateful, very grateful to see him.The longer things stay the same, the more they eventually change – plus c’est la meme chose, plus ça change. Nothing lasts forever – not a tree, not love, not even the memory of a violent death.
Internally changed, I went back through the mud. I was soaked through and it was clear that it was time for me to take shelter from the rain indoors.
The tree was huge, formidable, as if made of black blued steel a spire, towering over the river bank. I have failed in place if I think about climbing on it.Fuck it. No one, except Phineas, could have thought of such a crazy idea.
Naturally, he did not see anything in the least bit frightening in this. And if I did, I would never admit it. Our Phineas is not like that.
“What I like most about this tree,” he said in that voice that was the sonic analogue of the hypnotic gaze, “is that it is so trifling! – He bulged his green eyes, staring at us with a characteristic manic look, and only a smug grin, stretching his mouth and ridiculously protruding his upper lip, convinced that he was not completely crazy.
– So this is what you like the most? I said sarcastically. I said a lot of things that summer sarcastically, it was my “sarcastic summer,” the summer of 1942.
– Uh-huh-huh, – he replied. This funny New England interjection always amused me, and Phineas knew it, so this time I could not resist laughing, which reduced the degree of my sarcasm, and at the same time and fright.
There were three more with us – in those days Phineas always walked with the number of a hockey team – and they, standing nearby, looked from him to the tree and back, trying not to betray their fear.Rough wooden pegs went up the billowing black trunk to a solid branch hanging over the shore. Climbing this branch and making an incredible effort, you could jump into the river far enough so that it would not pose a danger to life. That’s what they said. At least the company of seventeen-year-olds did it, but they had a decisive advantage in one year before us. No middle-senior, as the penultimate high school graduates were called at Devon, ever tried it.Naturally, Phineas decided to become the first and, again, naturally, to knock us, the rest, also participate.
Strictly speaking, we were not even middle-aged yet, because it was a summer semester, arranged so that, given the wartime, we did not fall behind the school curriculum. So that summer, we were still in a precarious position of transition from uncomplaining rogues to almost seasoned and respected middle-aged ones. Those who were a class older than us, boys of pre-conscription age, almost already soldiers, were eager to go to war, ahead of us.They enrolled in accelerated courses in the first aid program and put together teams of physical hardening, which included jumping from this tree. So far, we calmly and humbly read Virgil and played tag on the river bank downstream. Until Phineas was struck by the thought of this tree.
And here we are, lifting our heads, looking at him: three with horror, one with excitement.
– Who is the first? – followed by a rhetorical question from Phineas. We answered only with silent glances, and then he began to undress, eventually taking off everything, down to his underpants. For such an outstanding athlete – even as a middle-junior, he was considered the best athlete in the school – Phineas was not very athletic. He was about my size – five feet eight and a half inches (before we began to live in the same room with him, I told everyone that I was five feet nine inches, but Phineas publicly, with his characteristic unshakable confidence, declared : “No, you and I are the same height – five feet eight and a half inches. Guys from the left flank”), and weighed ten pounds more – one hundred and fifty pounds, and his whole figure, from legs to torso, shoulder girdle, biceps and the powerful thick neck was a solid monolith of strength.
He began to climb the tree, clinging to the pegs nailed to the trunk. His back muscles worked like a panther. The pegs seemed not strong enough to support his weight. But at last Phineas stepped onto a branch that stretched closer to the water.
– Are they jumping from here? – he asked. None of us knew. – If I do this, you will have to repeat everything, okay? – We muttered something inarticulate. “Well,” he shouted, “this is my contribution to the defense! – And, pushing off, jumped, flew over the tips of the lower branches and flopped into the water.
– Great! – he shouted, finally emerging and swaying above the surface of the water; wet hair ridiculously clung to his forehead. – It was the greatest pleasure over the past week. Who is next?
I was next. At the sight of the tree, everything, down to the tips of my fingers, which felt a tingling sensation, washed over me with a wave of fear. An unnatural emptiness formed in my head, and the indistinct rustle of the neighboring forest began to be heard as if through a damping filter. I must have been in a state of mild shock.Fenced off by him from the environment, I took off my clothes and began to climb up the pegs. I don’t remember saying anything. In fact, the branch from which Phineas jumped was thinner than it seemed from below, and located much higher. It was impossible to walk along it far enough to be exactly above the water. Therefore, if you did not want to fall into shallow water near the shore, you had to push off strongly and jump far ahead.
– Come on! Finny urged me from below. – Stop showing off there.
Automatically, I noted to myself that the view from here was impressive.
“When a transport ship is torpedoed,” Finney shouted, “you cannot stand and admire nature. Jump!
And what am I doing here, in this heights? Why let Finney talk me into doing this stupid thing? Is he starting to have power over me?
– Jump!
With the feeling of throwing my life away, I jumped into nowhere. The tips of the lower branches scratched me on the fly, then I collapsed into the water. My feet touched the soft silt at the bottom, and the very next moment I emerged to the surface and heard congratulations. I felt great.
“I think you jumped better than Finny,” said Alvin Lepellier, known by the nickname Plague, as if challenging everyone.
“Take your time, boy,” Finny answered him in his heartfelt voice, which he pulled out of his chest like a sonorous wind instrument. – Do not start handing out awards until the distance is completed. The tree is waiting.
The plague man closed his mouth decisively, as if forever. He neither argued nor refused. I didn’t back down. He just became as inanimate. But the other two, Chet Douglass and Bobby Zane, were using all their eloquence: they loudly complained about school rules, about the danger of stomach colic or such a mutilation as no one had ever heard of.
“So it’s just you, buddy,” Finney finally said, addressing me. – Just you and me.
We set off with him on our way back through the playing fields in the respectful accompaniment of the others – like two overlords.
At that moment Phineas and I were best friends.
“You jumped great,” Finny said good-naturedly and added: “After I shamed you and forced you. – You did not shame or force anyone.
– No, I made you. You need me in such situations. Otherwise, you always try to evade.
– I’ve never dodged anything in my life! – I shouted with the more indignation that it was true. – You are crazy!
Phineas, in his white sneakers, walked serenely, or rather even soared, rolled forward with such an unconscious smoothness of movement that the word “walked” did not fit here.
I walked beside him through the huge playing fields to the sports complex. The lush green turf underfoot was touched by dew, and in front there was a faint green haze hanging over the grass and pierced through by the shimmer of the sun. Phineas suddenly fell silent, and in the silence began to hear the chirping of grasshoppers, the pre-dusk singing of birds, the artillery cannonade of a school truck driving on an empty treadmill a quarter of a mile away, a burst of laughter from the back door of the sports complex, and then, above all these sounds, indifferent the matriarchal ringing of the bell from under the dome of the First Building, announcing the time: six o’clock is the most indifferent, most pervasive bell in the world, well-mannered, imperturbable, invincible and final.
The bells were ringing over the luxurious tops of the elms, over the wide sloping roofs and formidable chimneys of the dormitory buildings, over the narrow and sharp tops of old houses, under the spacious New Hampshire sky – right towards us, returning from the river.
“We’ll have to hurry so we’re not late for dinner,” I said, switching to what Finney called my “West Point stride.” Not that Phineas somehow particularly disliked West Point or the authorities in general, he simply considered any power to be an inevitable evil, the opposition to which gives great pleasure, and himself – a kind of basketball backboard, returning all the insults she inflicted on him.He hated my West Point step; his right foot flashed through the air, and I dived into the grass at full speed.
– Well, get your hundred and fifty pounds off me! I yelled because he was sitting on my back. Finny got up, kindly patted the back of my head and moved on across the field, not even deigning to turn around so as not to miss my counterattack, but relying only on his supersensitive hearing and ability, without looking, to sense the approach from behind. When I threw myself at him, he easily took a step to the side, but, flying past, I still managed to kick him.He caught me by this very leg, and a short wrestling match took place between us on the turf, which he won.
“You’d better hurry,” he said, “otherwise they will put you in the guardhouse.
We moved forward again, now faster; Bobby, Plague, and Chet stepped forward and waved to us – for God’s sake, hurry up; so Phineas again caught me in his most reliable trap: I suddenly turned out to be a compromiser. As we walked quickly side by side, I suddenly felt disgust for the bell, for my own “West Point step,” for this haste and for my compromise.Finney was right. And there was only one way to show him that. I pushed him with my hip, taking him by surprise, and he was instantly on the ground, obviously pleased. That is why he loved me so much. When I jumped on him, putting my knees on his chest, he didn’t need anything else. We fought more or less on an equal footing for a while, and then, when he was already sure that we were late for dinner, we pulled ourselves apart.
Passing the sports complex, we headed towards the first group of dormitories, dark and silent. In the summer, there were only two hundred of us left at the school, not enough to fill most of the premises. Having passed the sprawling empty director’s house – the director was somewhere carrying out some task on behalf of the Washington government – the chapel, also empty, since it was used only in the mornings, and then for a very short time, The First Academic Building, in which the dim light was visible only in from several of its many windows, where the teachers continued to work in their classrooms, we walked down a short slope to the wide, perfectly trimmed lawn of the Far Pasture, the light falling on it only from the surrounding Georgian buildings.A dozen boys, after supper, wandered about on the grass and chatted to the accompaniment of the clatter of dishes coming from the kitchen, which was located in a wing of one of the buildings. As the sky gradually darkened, lights came on in the dormitories and old houses; somewhere far away a gramophone was playing loudly: not having finished playing “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree”, he changed the disc to “Either too young or too old”, then showed a more refined taste – the “Warsaw Concert” sounded, then a suite from the ballet “ Nutcracker, ”and then the gramophone fell silent.
Finney and I went to our room and began to do our homework for Hardy in the yellow light of the table lamps: I had already half-read Tess of the D’Urberville family, he continued an unequal struggle with the novel Away from the Maddened Crowd, amazed at the that there might be people named Gabriel Oak and Bathsheba Everdeen. Our illegal radio, which was so quiet that nothing could be heard, was broadcasting the news. Outside there was a rustle of an early summer breeze; the elders, who were allowed to return later than we were, slipped very quietly into the house to ten magnificent bells. The boys ran past our door, heading to the bathroom, and for some time they could hear water pouring from the shower continuously. Then the lights all over the school began to go out quickly. We undressed, I put on some kind of pajamas, and Finny, who had heard somewhere that it was “not military”, did not wear pajamas. For a while, silence was established, which meant: we are reading a prayer.
