How does Inside Lacrosse rank high school lacrosse teams nationwide. What criteria are used to determine the top players and programs. Which regions tend to dominate the national high school lacrosse rankings.
Inside Lacrosse’s National High School Rankings System
Inside Lacrosse is widely regarded as the premier source for high school lacrosse rankings and player evaluations. Their comprehensive ranking system takes into account a variety of factors to determine the top high school boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs across the country.
The rankings are broken down into several key categories:
- National Top 25 for both boys and girls
- Regional Top 10 rankings for Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest, and West
- Player rankings and evaluations
- Recruiting database with college commitments
These rankings are updated regularly throughout the season to reflect recent game results and performances. But how exactly are these rankings determined?
Ranking Criteria and Methodology
Inside Lacrosse utilizes a proprietary formula that incorporates several key factors:
- Win-loss record
- Strength of schedule
- Performance in major tournaments
- Head-to-head results
- Quality wins over other ranked opponents
- Historical program success
Additionally, the rankings take into account input from a panel of lacrosse experts, coaches, and scouts to provide context beyond just the statistics. This combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis aims to produce the most accurate and respected rankings in high school lacrosse.
Top Players and Recruiting Impact
Beyond team rankings, Inside Lacrosse provides in-depth analysis of the top individual high school lacrosse players. Their player rankings and recruiting database are invaluable resources for college coaches and fans alike.
How significant is a player’s ranking in the college recruiting process? While rankings certainly play a role, they are just one piece of the puzzle. College coaches evaluate prospects on a variety of factors including:
- On-field performance and statistics
- Athletic ability and potential for growth
- Academic qualifications
- Character and leadership qualities
- Fit within the program’s style of play
That said, a high ranking from Inside Lacrosse can certainly boost a player’s recruiting profile and lead to increased interest from top college programs.
Notable Top-Ranked Players
Some of the standout players highlighted in recent Inside Lacrosse rankings include:
- Joey Spallina – Attack, Mount Sinai (NY) – Committed to Syracuse
- Caden Gallagher – Midfield, Ponte Vedra (FL) – Committed to Duke
- Kori Edmondson – Midfield, McDonogh (MD) – Committed to North Carolina
- Emma LoPinto – Attack, Manhasset (NY) – Committed to Florida
These players have distinguished themselves through exceptional performances at both the high school and club levels, earning them recognition as some of the top recruits in their respective classes.
Regional Powerhouses in High School Lacrosse
While lacrosse has grown significantly nationwide in recent years, certain regions tend to dominate the national rankings year after year. Which areas produce the most highly-ranked teams and players?
Northeast Dominance
The Northeast region, particularly New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, consistently churns out many of the top-ranked high school lacrosse programs. Schools like Darien (CT), St. Anthony’s (NY), and Duxbury (MA) are perennial contenders in the national rankings.
Why does the Northeast have such a stronghold on high school lacrosse? Several factors contribute:
- Long-standing lacrosse tradition and youth development programs
- High population density leading to increased competition
- Access to top facilities and resources
- Proximity to many of the nation’s top college lacrosse programs
Mid-Atlantic Rising
The Mid-Atlantic region, led by lacrosse hotbeds in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, has also established itself as a powerhouse in high school lacrosse. Programs like Calvert Hall (MD), St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA), and Malvern Prep (PA) frequently appear near the top of national rankings.
The growth of lacrosse in this region can be attributed to:
- Strong youth and club lacrosse scenes
- Increased investment in high school programs
- Success of local college teams inspiring young players
Emerging Lacrosse Regions and Programs
While the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions have long dominated high school lacrosse, other areas of the country are making significant strides in the sport. Which regions are on the rise in the national rankings?
The South’s Lacrosse Boom
States like Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina have seen explosive growth in lacrosse participation and quality of play. Programs such as St. Andrew’s (FL), Lambert (GA), and Cardinal Gibbons (NC) have broken into the national rankings, challenging the traditional powerhouses.
Factors contributing to the South’s lacrosse emergence include:
- Year-round playing weather
- Influx of transplants from traditional lacrosse regions
- Increased youth participation and development programs
- Growing number of college programs in the region
Western Expansion
Lacrosse has also taken root on the West Coast, with California and Washington leading the charge. Schools like St. Ignatius Prep (CA) and Mercer Island (WA) have made appearances in national rankings, signaling the sport’s growth in the region.
The West’s lacrosse development has been aided by:
- Influx of coaches and players from established lacrosse regions
- Growing youth leagues and club programs
- Increased media coverage and exposure to the sport
Impact of Club Lacrosse on High School Rankings
The rise of elite club lacrosse programs has had a significant impact on high school rankings and player evaluations. How does participation in top club teams influence a player’s ranking and recruiting prospects?
Exposure to Elite Competition
Club lacrosse allows players to compete against top talent from across the country, often facing a higher level of competition than in their high school leagues. This exposure can greatly impact a player’s development and evaluation.
Benefits of club lacrosse participation include:
- Playing against diverse competition from different regions
- Exposure to college coaches at showcase tournaments
- Opportunity to play year-round and refine skills
- Access to high-level coaching and training
Ranking Considerations
Inside Lacrosse takes club lacrosse performance into account when evaluating players and teams. Strong showings in major club tournaments can boost a player’s ranking and visibility to college recruiters.
However, it’s important to note that high school performance remains a crucial factor in rankings and evaluations. The best players typically excel at both the high school and club levels.
College Recruiting and Inside Lacrosse Rankings
How much weight do college coaches place on Inside Lacrosse rankings when evaluating potential recruits? While rankings certainly play a role, they are just one piece of the puzzle in the complex world of college lacrosse recruiting.
Beyond the Rankings
College coaches consider a wide range of factors when assessing potential recruits:
- On-field performance and statistics
- Athletic ability and potential for growth
- Academic qualifications
- Character and leadership qualities
- Fit within the program’s style of play
A high ranking from Inside Lacrosse can certainly boost a player’s profile and lead to increased interest from college programs. However, coaches will always do their own evaluations and consider how a player fits their specific needs and system.
The Recruiting Timeline
Inside Lacrosse rankings can be particularly influential early in the recruiting process, helping players gain initial exposure to college programs. As the process progresses, direct evaluations and relationships become more important.
Key stages in the lacrosse recruiting timeline include:
- Initial exposure through rankings, highlight videos, and club tournaments
- Communication with college coaches (as permitted by NCAA rules)
- Campus visits and showcases
- Official visits for top prospects
- Scholarship offers and commitments
Challenges and Controversies in High School Lacrosse Rankings
While Inside Lacrosse’s rankings are widely respected, they are not without their critics and challenges. What are some of the main controversies surrounding high school lacrosse rankings?
Regional Bias Concerns
Some argue that the rankings favor traditional lacrosse powerhouse regions, making it difficult for emerging programs to gain recognition. Factors contributing to this perception include:
- Limited head-to-head competition between regions
- Varying levels of lacrosse development across the country
- Historical dominance of certain regions in the sport
Inside Lacrosse has made efforts to address these concerns by expanding coverage and evaluation of programs in non-traditional lacrosse areas.
Subjectivity in Player Rankings
Individual player rankings can be particularly contentious, as they often rely heavily on subjective evaluations. Critics argue that factors such as a player’s physical development, exposure to top competition, and access to resources can unfairly impact rankings.
To mitigate these concerns, Inside Lacrosse emphasizes that their rankings are just one tool in the evaluation process and encourages players, parents, and coaches to focus on overall development rather than specific numerical rankings.
The Future of High School Lacrosse Rankings
As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow and evolve, so too will the methods for ranking and evaluating high school teams and players. What trends are likely to shape the future of lacrosse rankings?
Advanced Analytics
The use of advanced statistics and data analysis is likely to play an increasing role in lacrosse rankings and player evaluations. Metrics beyond traditional box score stats may provide deeper insights into player and team performance.
Potential areas for analytical advancement include:
- Player efficiency ratings
- Expected goals models
- Possession-based statistics
- Strength of schedule algorithms
Technology and Video Analysis
Improvements in video technology and analysis tools may allow for more comprehensive player evaluations, even for athletes in remote or underexposed areas. This could help level the playing field and provide more opportunities for talented players to gain recognition.
Potential technological advancements include:
- AI-powered video analysis
- Virtual reality scouting tools
- Wearable technology for performance tracking
As high school lacrosse continues to grow in popularity and competitiveness, the importance of comprehensive and accurate rankings will only increase. Inside Lacrosse’s commitment to evolving their methodologies and expanding their coverage ensures that they will remain at the forefront of high school lacrosse evaluation and analysis for years to come.

School description
The history of Fettes College began in the middle of the 19th century, when Sir William Fettes, a successful businessman, statesman and philanthropist, in memory of his son and only heir, bequeathed all his savings (166,000 pounds sterling) to the foundation of an educational institution for orphans and poor children.
The allocated funds were enough to buy 350 acres of land and invite the famous architect David Bryce. The college was built in a style known as the “Scottish baronial” neo-Gothic style. One of the most famous examples of this style is the Scottish residence of British royalty – Balmoral Castle. The new school was named after its founder, Fettes. And in 1870, the majestic building of Fettes College, which today is considered an architectural masterpiece of the era of Queen Victoria, opens its doors to the first students. They were 53 boys, most of whom were orphans and from poor families, all of them received a scholarship. The school accepted the first girls after 100 years.
Fettes College very quickly gained a reputation as an educational institution with high academic and athletic results. The school is especially strong in teaching subjects such as physics, chemistry, history, geography, mathematics and English.
Many eminent diplomats, lawyers, judges, journalists, athletes and politicians have come out of the walls of Fettes College, but perhaps the most famous graduates are former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (films The Chronicles of Narnia, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). And if you have read Ian Fleming’s novel You Only Live Twice, then you know that everyone’s favorite agent 007, James Bond, studied at this school just like his father. And, if we started talking about world-famous and beloved books, it is impossible not to say that this educational institution served as the prototype of the alma mater of young wizards and sorceresses – Hogwarts. Yes, it was Fettes College that served as an inspiration for JK Rowling.
Studying at Fettes College will allow you to take all the best from the educational systems of England, Scotland and Wales – the school produces well-rounded, disciplined and educated students who are ready for a successful life in the modern international community.
The school has the best academic results in the country for GCSE and A-levels programs. In addition, students have the opportunity to study on the international IB program or receive a national Scottish Highers certificate. It is worth noting that Fettes College is one of three schools in Scotland (the other two are George Watson’s College and St.
