With the 2018 NCAA men’s lacrosse season underway it’s time to check in on the stick setups of the top 20 men’s teams.
I’ve done posts like this in the previous year –
But now we’re back with the 2018 version.
This list of Top 20 teams was taken from ranking as of March 5th, 2018. By the time you read this post the current men’s top 20 might look very different as it continues to shape and morph all season long.

Right away we can see with the introduction of the STX Eclipse 2 goalie head, many NCAA goalies have made the upgrade to the latest and great. However there are a few goalies who hanging onto the STX Eclipse still.
I think the thing that surprises me the most out of all these numbers is the number of goalies using the STX Shield – 4.
I’ve played around with the Shield and I found it way too heavy for my liking. But that’s why each goalie is unique.
Also interesting to see a few goalies using the Brine Eraser and Brine Eraser 2. I had heard that the Brine Eraser was one of the most underrated heads out there but in all honesty I haven’t played with it.
Most NCAA goalies are opting for the 12 diamond mesh with an attack length shaft. I think that setup gives you max quickness which is required to dominate in today’s game.

Best Lacrosse Head in 2021
The lacrosse head is one of the most essential components you need to play the game. Basically it’s that thing at the end of your stick which allows you to cradle and shoot the ball. There are so many different brands and models available, selecting the right head can get just a bit overwhelming.
That’s why we’ve come up with this guide, it will walk you through all of the necessary things to keep in mind when you’re ready to purchase a lacrosse head.
Player position is a good place to start and from there you’ll want to take things like league regulations, weight, and shape under consideration when making your choice. But there is no other prevailing factor beyond skill level that you should heed first, as most beginners don’t need expensive, advanced equipment.
A standard head with a wide catching area and a pronounced scoop are enough for the new player to get a feel for the game. This will help them learn the basics of lacrosse through ball control, movement, and ground recovery. But as the player’s skills progress and become more fine tuned, then an upgrade in gear will be warranted.
Lacrosse Heads by Position
Attacker/Midfield
Attackers are the driving force behind the team’s offense so naturally they want a head that gives them better control and shot accuracy. That means the head should have a tighter throat and a pocket allowing for enough ball protection when things get heated near the crease.
These heads are usually lighter in weight because midfielders need to move fast and avoid checks from the defense while maintaining enough power to send line drives at the cage. Midfield players also want a little more stiffness to their head so they can deliver some hard checks to their opponents, scoop up grounders on the fly, and pass the ball with precision.
Defenseman
Players on the defense are tasked with taking the ball away from the opposing offense. These players will opt for a head that’s wider for more available surface with which to intercept or deflect passes. Defensemen also favor a head that’s much stiffer than the attack, so they can make those hard checks into the other guy’s stick count. The stiffness will also make the head able to withstand the action it sees in traffic and on the ground when it comes to grabbing grounders.
These heads are usually a bit heavier in comparison.
Goalie
The very nature of the position is all about defense. The guardian of the net has been endowed with the biggest head of anyone else on the field, designed specifically for preventing the ball from making it to the back of the cage. The goalie head has the widest stopping area available while still affording the player enough stiffness and ball accuracy to take on all comers and clear the ball away from the crease with the most efficiency and care.
Lacrosse Head Components
Sidewalls and Stringing
The pocket is a vital part of any lacrosse head and every player has his or her own preferred way of stringing their pocket. You could almost compare them to snowflakes, as you’re likely not to find two similar pockets on the field at the same time. These are very personal to the player’s preferred style of play.
The way to get the perfect pocket is to string the mesh to the head in just the right way and that versatility requires plenty of stringing holes. The more holes there are and how they’re placed along the sidewall rail increases the amount of ways you can string their pocket to your liking.
The sidewall rails are also important when it comes to flex, weight, and strength in the head. More material in the rail will obviously add to the overall head weight, while the height of the sidewalls will contribute to the way the ball moves in and out of the head. The sidewalls also give the head its resilience, so keeping that in mind will help you find a happy medium combining all the essentials in a head that works best for your style of play.
Pinch
This refers to how wide or narrow the head is at the throat. The more pinch on the head, the tighter it is and that affects the way ball moves in and out of the pocket. This also contributes to how the ball is safeguarded inside the head and certain players prefer more pinch while others prefer less.
The position you play can influence how much pinch you really need.
Scoop
This is the area of the head that is used to literally scoop the ball up off the ground and it also assists in the release of the ball when passing and shooting. You’ll find heads with a more rounded and marked curve which are better suited for attackers because it affects shot accuracy, while others have a flatter scoop which makes picking up the ball easier. There is a whole range of scoop gradients available from the leading manufacturers.
Legality
Whether it’s a youth league, high school, or the NCAA, there are certain regulations governing the requirements lacrosse equipment must comply with if they’re to be used in specific types of game play. Naturally, not all heads are in compliance with all leagues, but there are those which are classified as “universal” which makes them suitable for all regulations. A heads specified compliance doesn’t necessarily make the head better than others.
How to Pick a Box Lacrosse Goalie Head
When it comes to the goalie world, one of the more frequent questions I have been asked is,
What head should I use when playing Box Lacrosse Goalie?
Let’s start by making it clear that I am not a professional (lacrosse player) but I think I can give some guidance into what to look for when picking a head.
I travel and play as much box lacrosse as possible and consider myself to be a true student of the game, trying to observe and learn something new every time I hit the floor.

Realistically every (field style) goalie head can be used for playing box, but you need to take into account the head is now on the floor of the playing surface inverted and between the legs of the keeper. The down position is a complete contrast to playing field lacrosse where the stick is upright and off to the side of goaltender’s head.
Since they aren’t easy to find in the States and not many of our leagues allow them, I’ll leave the traditional over-sized goalie heads out of this discussion.
3 Key Components
There are three key components I look for when selecting a box lacrosse goalie head.
- Stiffness – If your head is too flimsy it could break from a shot or from leaning on the head.
- Scoop Shape – I have found flatter scooped heads are the way to go. The more surface area touching the floor the better. This will prevent a shot from spinning your head like a top and letting the ball trickle by.
- Surface area – Find a head that you are comfortable with but also take up as much space as possible between your legs, think about it… bigger is better!
The three more popular heads I see being used by box goalies, in no specific order, are the; Under Armour Headline, Gait Web, and Maverik Base.
Gait Web / Maverik Base
These three heads have a great stiffness to surface area ratio and all have a flat scoop. The Headline and Base, I believe, were made for a field goalie in mind, but work just as well indoors.
The Gait Web on the other hand is an older head that was specifically made for playing box. Its unorthodox square shape and extreme stiffness is a big reason why it is a weapon of choice for so many keepers.

Before Under Armour took over the NLL as the main sponsor, the majority of the pros were using the Gait Web. Now the Headline has taken over as the best head option for keepers in the NLL.
Think Outside The Box
Let it be known, you are NOT limited to just these 3 heads to play box. If you don’t feel like spending the money or just want to try being a goalie for a game. Here is a list of a few other heads that I have seen on the floor or options that could be used for box play.
At the end of the day it comes down to preference. Do not be afraid to get out there and try it out. Just remember to keep your eye on the ball and get big.

Bored with football and hockey? Are you not interested in volleyball and basketball? Do you want something exotic? The sports editorial office of “BUSINESS Online” tells about sports that are insanely popular in some countries, but for a Russian fan they are a wonder.
AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL
Where is popular? The entire green continent is literally crazy about football.Only we are not talking about the kind of football that the Europeans consider the only correct one, but the Americans call it “soccer”. Lefty Wilson is considered one of the earliest designers and manufacturers of masks.
