So good we head to give it some fresh run again. See how nature’s fireworks sent our man McCool back to his dye lab with a vision.

Materials
- One white, unstrung head
- PAM cooking spray
- Rit Dye: 2 different colors
- Large pot for boiling water
- Disposable turkey tray
- Long fork, spoon or screwdriver
- Dish soap
- Paper towels
- Goo Gone
This dye job is a pretty quick and easy way to make a very cool-looking head.
I got the idea for this tutorial from a pink sunset I saw this week. There were beautiful pinks, purples and blues in the sky, so I thought I’d try to recreate it. I know what you’re thinking: McCool is a little cheesy. Whatever. Some guys see a beautiful sunset and take photographs, write poetry or compose music. I dye lacrosse sticks. We’re all artists in our own right.
This dye job came out pretty cool, although it didn’t exactly turn out to look exactly like the sunset I saw … oh well.
The only problem with this is that it’s pretty hard to control the results. The only unusual tool needed is a can of PAM cooking spray, which you can probably find in your kitchen right now. Another key pointer is that it helps to use light colors so it doesn’t come out looking like a dark mess.
The Pink Pan
First thing, just boil a pot of water like you usually would. Make sure you have enough water to fill your turkey tray so the water will be deeper than the head when it’s laying in the dye.
When the water is boiling hot, pour it in the tray and mix in the color that is lighter. For my dye job, I used Rose Pink Rit Dye.
Spray Day
Spray your head as you like with the cooking spray. The PAM starts to puddle like spray paint if you put too much on. But definitely make sure you leave some parts of your head well covered, so it leaves big patches of white for the next color. The more you spray, the more white areas there will be.
Also, the farther away you hold the PAM, the easier it is to control how much goes on the head.
The small dots of oil will stay put in the dye, leaving small white specks. If you get too close, you’ll just make it puddle and run. So decide what areas you want to stay perfectly white and where you want a speckled look. Then get to spraying.
Turning Pink
When you’re satisfied with your application of oil, hold the head by putting a finger in the throat so you don’t smudge the oil. Then dip it slowly into the dye.
Use something other than your hand — like a fork, spoon or long screwdriver — to pull the head out every couple of minutes or so, just to keep an eye on the color. You don’t want it to get too dark.
When it looks good, pull the head out without touching it with your hand.
A Quick Rinse
Now we need to get the oil and excess dye off the head. The best way to do this is with some soapy water. I used some dish soap (ironically, I used Dawn soap for the Sunset dye job) in the same turkey tray that held the dye.
Just soak the head in the soapy water for a minute or two, then rinse it off and wipe it down with a paper towel.
While you’re cleaning off the head, boil the next pot of water for the next color dye. For my dye job, my second color is Evening Blue. Get the second dye color ready to go in your turkey tray. Then move quickly to the next step.
Spraying: Round 2
This time, spray the head again, but don’t go too heavy on the parts that remain white. You might want to put some on the white parts, but not much at all. Spray the pink parts a lot where you want to keep it pink, and lightly where you want the two colors to blend into purple and have that multicolored speckled look.
For an easy guide to know where to spray the head the second time around, check out this simple chart:
White + no oil = Blue
White + oil = White
Pink + no oil = Purple
Pink + oil = Pink
So, think about where you want the head to remain white, remain pink, turn blue or turn purple.
Then, go ahead and spray it.
A Blue Bath:
Just like when you dyed the pink, pick up the head with a finger in the throat and dip it slowly into the blue dye. Keep a very close eye on the head this time, checking it every few seconds. The blue will dye the head a lot faster than the pink does.
You should see a lot of pink, blue and purple, with little specks of each mingling all over the head, as well as a couple specks of white, depending on how you sprayed the head. Once you’ve got the mix of colors you want, take it out of the dye.
The Final Steps:
When you’re done, soak it in some soapy water again. Wipe it all off and stick it in the freezer for 30 minutes to help set the colors. Your Sunset dye job is done.
