As a rule, most people associate the word “hockey” with ice skating with a puck and moments of power struggle. However, we should not forget that there are several varieties of this sport, which we would like to talk about in more detail.
Ice Hockey (Canadian)
This is the most popular type of hockey that appeared in Canada at the end of the 19th century. Most common in Scandinavian countries, Russia, Belarus, Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Switzerland and Canada. It is played on the ice rink with markings and goals. The players are dressed in hockey equipment in the hands of a stick, the projectile for playing the puck of which is required to score a goal into the opponent’s goal. According to the rules, five field players and one goalkeeper from each team can be present on the ice.
Bandy (bandy, Russian hockey)
This variety is also called Russian hockey, since the first mention of it dates back to the times of Ancient Rus’. It is most popular in our country, Kazakhstan and the Scandinavian countries. Also played on ice. The size of the court is comparable to the size of a football field, and the markings are a combination of football and hockey. The match is played by two teams. At the same time, 11 players can be on the ice: 10 field players and 1 goalkeeper. Hockey players move around the field with the help of skates and use clubs to score goals. But the goalkeeper has no stick.
Field hockey
This summer sport is quite popular in the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, Great Britain, Asian countries and South Africa. Matches are played on a special synthetic surface that resembles grass in texture. The game projectile is a small hard ball. The sticks are shorter than the “standard” sticks and have a stronger blade bend. The game is played by two teams of eleven people. Only the goalkeeper is wearing protective gear. The duration of the match is 70 minutes (2 halves of 35 minutes) or 60 minutes (4 halves of 15 minutes). A hit is counted only when the throw is made from the circle of impact. At the same time, field players cannot touch the ball with any part of the body.
Sledge hockey (sledge hockey, vertical hockey)
This is a Paralympic variation of standard hockey, in which players with diseases of the musculoskeletal system take part. So instead of skates, specially designed sleds are used here. Hockey players are dressed in protective ammunition and hold a pair of short sticks for repulsion and making shots on goal. There are 6 people on the ice: one at the gate and five in the “field”. The match lasts 45 minutes, including three periods of 15 minutes.
Indoor hockey
It is an analogue of bandy played indoors on a handball court. The gate is quite large: almost 2 m high and 3 m wide. Sticks are much lighter than in field hockey. As a rule, the match is played in the sports hall and lasts 40 minutes (2 periods of 20 minutes each). Each team has five field players and one goalkeeper.
Roller hockey (inline hockey, rollerball, rink hockey)
Belongs to summer sports disciplines. Matches are mainly organized in the gym. Hockey players move on roller skates-quads, trying to score a ball into the opponent’s goal with shortened hard rubber clubs. There is also room for a power struggle and a high pace of play lasting 40 minutes (2 halves of 20 minutes each).
Inline hockey is a very dynamic and fluid game. It is considered a contact sport, but body checking is prohibited.
Floorball
is a variation of bandy. Matches are held on a hard floor covering 40×20 m with a plastic hollow ball, which is hit with a special plastic stick. Initially, the game was intended for training hockey players in the summer, so its rules are very similar to classic ice hockey. Attracts the attention of fans with an abundance of interesting and spectacular combinations.
Ball hockey
In fact, this is a budget version of ice hockey. Quite popular in our country, Japan, Holland and Bermuda. It is played with a standard club and a bandy ball in an open box with a flat surface. Usually takes place in the formats “2 by 2”, “3 by 3” and “5 by 5”. One of the advantages of ball hockey is that you don’t have to know how to skate before regular hockey. Equipment commonly used from ice hockey (leggings, stick, elbows, knee pads and helmet).
Lacrosse
The oldest sport in North America, played with a special stick with a net (cross) and a rubber lacrosse ball. The rules imply a competition between two teams with the number of participants from six to ten people, conditionally divided into attackers, defenders, midfielders and a goalkeeper. The field has different parameters depending on who is playing – women or men. The goal areas are located on both sides of the field in a special circle called the fold. It is allowed to push the opponent and try to knock the ball from him with a cross.
Rink bendy
This is a mini field hockey game played on an ice field with two teams of 5 field players and 1 goalkeeper. Hockey players move on skates and try to score a goal to the other team with a stick. The gate is guarded by a goalkeeper who does not have a club. The game lasts 90 minutes. and consists of two halves of 45 minutes. Although more than sixty countries play rink bandy, only four of them have become world champions: Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Italy.
Table hockey
This is a game for two players that simulates classic ice hockey. It is carried out on a mechanical simulator or in the form of a playing field, or on a special table. Opponents lead the game for their team, manipulating the player figures. Table hockey, which appeared in the middle of the 20th century, is most common in Sweden, France and Russia.
Underwater hockey
The peculiarity of this sport is that all matches are held under water, and the ammunition of athletes must include: fins, mask, breathing tube, club and gloves. The game consists of two periods of 15 or 10 minutes. At the bottom of the pool there are gates into which players must insert a plastic puck.
Ice hockey
This most extreme winter sport is a symbiosis of hockey and diving. Due to the low temperature, halves last no more than ten minutes. Hockey players move the puck across the ice from the inside of a frozen lake while in a head-down position. Each team consists of two or three players. The gates look like holes. It is noteworthy that ice hockey is rapidly gaining popularity and in a short time of its existence has supplanted the most traditional ice hockey races for Russians.
Broomball (broom hockey)
The term from two English words is translated as “broom” and “ball”. The game is similar to a symbiosis of ice hockey and floorball. It is played on an ice arena with a rough surface and resembles classic hockey, only a ball is used instead of a puck, and a stick with a curved tip is used instead of a stick. On the feet of hockey players, shoes with rubberized soles that prevent slipping are worn. Each team consists of a goalkeeper and five players, although the number may vary depending on the size of the field.
Hockey boots
Skates and special equipment are not required here. This type of hockey originated in the Urals and today is developing in such Russian regions as Omsk, Irkutsk, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk. Moreover, its geography is rapidly expanding. The game is a mixture of bandy and ice hockey. Two ten-minute periods are played in a hockey box across the rink. A pair of teams of 5 people participate, of which one is at the gate and four are in the field. The main difference is that the matches are held not on skates, but on felt boots. For the game, clubs and a tennis ball are used, which can be hit not only with a club, but also with your feet, and even with your hands.
Pond hockey
This team game is a kind of ice hockey in natural waters, similar to traditional ice hockey, only with simplified rules. The hockey rink occupies 50-80% of the size of a standard field and does not have glazing and high sides. In fact, it is any outdoor ice rink where friends meet and play friendly matches.
3 hl-hockey
In 3×3 hockey, the rules are different from the usual ones: there are no offsides, but there are shootouts with pursuit, etc. Four players can be on the ice at the same time: 3 outfield players and a goalkeeper. The reduced number of teams increases the number of dangerous moments and enhances the entertainment of the game. The duration of the match is three periods of 7-8 minutes with a 2-minute break.
One wheel hockey
This sport originated in the USA and is most popular among American and British youth. The main difference from traditional ice hockey is the presence of a unicycle with plastic pedals. Competitions are held on a hard surface, most often in a gym. Protective ammunition for athletes includes knee pads and elbow pads. The goalposts and sticks are the same as those of classic hockey players. In some tournaments, a ball is used instead of a puck.
Hornussen
The Swiss team sport could well be called a hybrid of hockey and baseball. A 4-round match takes place on a clearing stretched up to 100 m between two teams of 18 people each. The Hornuss or rubber puck is launched into the field with a special whip. Players must shoot down an incoming projectile with a shovel by tossing the shindel into the air.
Herling
This variety, common in Ireland, North America, Great Britain, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa, is of Celtic origin and belongs to the Gaelic games. Hurling is played with a ball and wooden sticks. It is allowed to score the ball not only with them, but also with hands, feet and other parts of the body. You can carry the ball in your hand for no more than 4 steps, and pass it with a blow of your hand or club. Also in hurling there are traditional rectangular goals with a net and rugby, so the score in the game is double. The number of players in each team is 15 people, including the goalkeeper.
