5 Reasons to Get a Custom Baseball or Softball Glove
If your child plays baseball or softball, you’ve probably browsed rows and rows of gloves in sporting goods stores – and you might have even felt a bit overwhelmed by the options. Building a custom baseball or softball glove could be a great option when you’re not sure which glove will work best or if you want a unique, personalized mitt. We’ve made custom gloves for everyone, from youth players to MLB superstars, so we know how to get the most out of your child’s gamer. And while there are many great off-the-shelf glove options, building a custom glove offers clear advantages, especially for younger players.
1. You know you’re getting quality, durable materials
That glove you see in the store with a marked-down price tag might be tempting, but there’s no guarantee that it won’t fall apart before the season ends, especially with certain brands. Choosing a custom glove allows you more control over the materials of the ball glove. For example, our custom glove builder lets you choose between four leather options: Heart of the Hide, Pro Preferred, Liberty Advanced, and Gamer XLE. Heart of the Hide and Pro Preferred use high-end leather featured in most MLB gloves. Liberty Advanced features full-grain leather and patterns designed specifically for softball and is the choice of many pro fastpitch players. Gamer XLE leather is a bit softer and designed for youth players, but it’s still tough enough to hold up over multiple seasons of use. Many players who build a custom glove for youth ball can play with it all through high school – you can’t get much better value than that.
2. You’ll be guided through the building process
There are a lot of factors to weigh when buying a ball glove. What web type do you want? What position are you playing? How do you want your fingers to fit in the glove? (These questions don’t even get into cosmetic features!) Building a custom glove gives you a guided process for your decision-making, helping you make the best decision for your child in every feature. For example, one of the first steps in our custom glove builder is choosing a position. If you know your child will primarily play infield—you’ll be guided to patterns specifically built for infielders. The same goes for outfielders, catchers, first basemen, and pitchers. A guided building process allows you to make educated choices for your child – so you know that when you do move away from the norm, you’re doing it for the right reasons.

3. You can ensure the glove will be comfortable
Every ballplayer is built differently, and nobody wants to play with a glove that doesn’t feel quite right on your hand. When you design a custom glove, there are many ways to modify your design for the most comfortable feel possible. One of the choices you’ll have to make is for the hand-opening size. Our custom glove builder allows you to select from multiple different size options to ensure the wrist won’t be too tight or loose. If you’re worried about the weight of your child’s glove, you can incorporate specialty materials that are lighter than traditional leather. (And they look pretty slick, too.) Some patterns have other customizations, like Fastback or Wing-Tip designs. You can also get special finger stalls that accommodate a “finger shift,” where you move your ring finger toward your pinky. Our builder even allows you to modify how broken-in you want your glove to be upon delivery.
4. Your ballplayer can use their creativity
Now you’re getting to the fun stuff. Building a custom glove means your child can create a glove that looks like nothing else on the field. Our custom glove builder allows you to choose the colors of your web, outer shell, palm shell, inner welting, outer welting, binding, lacing, stitching, palm liner, palm pad, patch, custom embroidery, and trim. Phew! Whether you’re looking for something classic-looking, like Gleyber Torres, or something bold and bright, like Byron Buxton, you and your child will be able to customize every detail when you build their gamer. Be sure to put the icing on the cake when buying a custom glove with some personalized embroidery, too. You can add an MLB team logo, a flag, special script, or just roll with your name or number!
5. You can make a special memory together
The perfect glove is about more than making slick plays across the field; it’s about the memories you put into it. The hours and hours of catch in the backyard, the long tournament weekends, maybe even throwing it up in the air as you head to the dogpile after a big win – all of these feelings will stay with a ballplayer for years to come. You can make sure those memories are even more special with a custom baseball or softball glove. Building a perfect glove together is a great way to teach your young ballplayer more about the game, to share passions and ideas, and to have a tangible reminder of your shared love for baseball or softball.
Why should you build a custom glove?
A custom glove is an investment in your child’s game: get it right and you’ll reap the benefits for seasons to come, with a glove that ages perfectly alongside their game. We’ve been customizing gloves for big leaguers for over a century, and we like to think we’re continuing to improve at it. How polyurethane materials enable mass customization of end-use parts
12/21/2022
Historically, personalization has been out of the reach of the average consumer or limited to soft goods such as personalized embroidery on clothing, bedding or shoes. Personalization of durable goods, hardware, durable equipment and other things that require durability has been too complex and costly to be incorporated into the traditional manufacturing processes that make these products.
As 3D printing continues to take off with the introduction of new materials and more accessible workflows, personalization is becoming available for a wide range of products with different mechanical requirements.
Finite, strong and rigid 3D printed parts are not only possible, but virtually indistinguishable from those created using mass production technologies. Using desktop 3D printers such as the Form 3+, combined with PU Rigid 1000 Resin and PU Rigid 650 Resin materials, Formlabs users can create custom end-use parts that are resistant to impact, environmental conditions and repeated loading.
Formlabs Polyurethane Resins
For more than a decade, designers, engineers and product manufacturers have relied on Formlabs SLA 3D printers to create parts with superior surface finish, perfect precision and a range of mechanical properties that can mimic injection molded plastics. However, end-use opportunities have been limited mainly to small-scale tooling or ancillary production.
To bridge this gap, Formlabs has spent years developing an entirely new material chemistry based on the exact combination of acrylate and urethane, a material capable of heavy, high impact use, yet with an affordable and inexpensive workflow. With the PU Rigid 650 and PU Rigid 1000, this delicate balance has been struck, and the same affordability, scalability, and ease of use that Formlabs brought to prototyping, modeling, and low-volume tooling is now possible for final, custom products.
Performance Performance Products
In the world of sporting goods, prototypes don’t just look – they have to work. Product designers in the field may have used 3D printing to find an initial shape or to evaluate the aesthetics of a particular team or player, but then ordered single-use injection molds to create working prototypes for testing.
With PU Rigid 650 Resin and PU Rigid 1000 Resin, functional prototypes are now possible, even for products like this lacrosse head that will be subjected to high impact, stretch, high humidity and adverse weather conditions in a typical testing scenario.
High-quality prototypes that can also be used for functional testing allow product developers to gain an edge in highly competitive areas by reducing iteration cycles and improving performance feedback. They can expand the customization options for different types of players or teams with different styles without the high cost associated with multiple iterations of several different uniforms.
At the 2022 Formlabs User Summit, Formlabs Product Director David Lakatos demonstrated the impact strength and performance capabilities of the PU Rigid 650 by testing this lacrosse head design. You can see full functional testing in its main presentation.
Printed Polyurethane Part Application Examples
Formlabs Rigid Polyurethane Resins create parts that are strong, stiff and durable, making them ideal materials for applications requiring extended wear, pressure and exposure.
Motorcycle Grips
Motorcycle, moped, scooter and bicycle grips have a unique set of material property requirements. They need to be ergonomic and comfortable in the hand, provide enough traction to grip, and be strong enough to withstand impacts such as rain, snow, wind and repeated pressure. Hand grips are traditionally made using methods such as rubber or silicone molding or injection molding.
These traditional methods require the use of master patterns, which can be expensive to make and limit the types of geometry or patterns possible. By its nature, mass production does not allow for any variation in the size or shape of the user’s hands – it is simply too expensive to produce them in such quantities to account for all possible physical differences.
Printed tooling and molds can help reduce the cost of production in small quantities, but true one-offs have been nearly financially impossible until now. With the improvement in precision and the development of materials, direct 3D printing of these materials makes it possible to manufacture disposable handles for end use. Formlabs PU Rigid 650 Resin and PU Rigid 1000 Resin have excellent surface finish and can withstand extreme environmental conditions, even for extended periods of use.
Printed with Rigid 650 PU resin, this custom motorcycle grip can withstand tough outdoor conditions and torque while providing the rider with improved control, agility and comfort.
Individual hand grips such as this not only increase rider comfort, but also make riding a motorcycle safer and more efficient. Weatherproof and durable PU Rigid 650 Resin increases handle life, provides cushioning, reduces vibration and helps resist shock.
Customers are willing to pay for custom options, and manufacturers can improve their performance with minimal additional labor. Once scanning systems are in place and a digital model of a customer’s physical model is created, affordable and scalable options such as Form 3+ SLA 3D printers are easy to implement.
This workflow can also be deployed to the small business and aftermarket levels. The addition of a Form 3+, moisture curing chamber, and the required Rigid 650 PU resin is affordable and could open up additional revenue streams for small dealerships looking to retain customers after the initial purchase of a motorcycle.
Automotive customization
Replacing traditionally manufactured parts, whether repairing, customizing, lightening or improving performance, is one automotive application that has previously been hampered by material quality. End-use automotive parts in particular must be durable, heat-resistant and have a smooth, professional surface finish.
Demand for parts is growing and in the automotive industry these applications are possible ways to introduce printed parts:
- Easy replacements to improve speed or performance
- Spare parts for broken components
- Body scan based adjustment for improved comfort and control
- Tailored to your aesthetic preferences
With the spread of electric vehicles, lightening weight in the automotive world has become commonplace in the development and design process of new models, but 3D printing can also allow older car owners to lighten their own components, improving the car’s fuel efficiency.
Similarly, 3D printed repair parts allow owners to take more control over their vehicle’s longevity, rather than relying on the OEM to accurately predict the number and type of repair parts needed years into the future. Formlabs polyurethane resins are ideal for repairing dashboard parts such as knobs, gauges and seat belt components due to their smooth surface and high impact resistance.
Traditionally, vehicle customization has been limited to color and aesthetic trim. 3D printing can provide aesthetic customization as well, such as through custom touches such as hood ornaments or emblems, but true customization based on the driver’s physical shape requires high-precision 3D printing and a material that can provide the right feel and strength.
Rigid 650 PU Resin is ideal for custom parts, such as this shifter modeled from a 3D scan of the driver’s hand. For a car with a manual transmission, handling is critical, so the shifter must be comfortable to grip, with excellent grip, and comfortable to the hand.
As capabilities improve at every step of the workflow, the use of 3D printed parts has become a source of income for many aftermarket independent parts suppliers and has huge potential for licensed automakers, dealers and subsidiaries who want to provide additional services.
Bulk personalization for consumer products
Personalization is no longer something reserved for the top 1% of the industry. Top athletes, for example, have always had access to personalized merchandise, often as part of a brand campaign or in exchange for product endorsements. But these customization options often provide real performance benefits, and lessons can be learned from these experiments and applied to the average consumer.
For much of the last century, customization of sports equipment has been used to help Olympians and professional athletes achieve their best. With affordable 3D printing and workflows that can be mastered by professionals without much 3D printing experience, customization for high performance is now possible for recreational athletes and everyday consumers.
