Ranking High School Lacrosse Teams: Why?

There are a couple of polls out there that attempt to rank the Top 20 or Top 25 US high school lacrosse teams, and when you look at it as an extension of the NCAA Top 20 polls, it seems to make some initial sense, but when you look a little deeper, the rationale begins to fall apart pretty quickly. Why do we rank high school lacrosse teams nationally in one ranking system? Heck, why do we even rank them at all?

First of all, there is no national High School champion, and unlike the NCAA polls, the high school polls serve no real purpose in predicting tournament success. There is no real championship at the end, and there is no trophy to be handed out…  beyond the opinion of a few voting members, nothing is actually on the line, except maybe a little manufactured pride for high school kids and their parents.

Add in the fact that there are still very few out-of-state games for the majority of high school teams, and making sense (in this case that means ranking teams) based off a couple interstate games does very little to create a compelling ranking system, and the entire thought process looks pretty dilapidated. A small sample size is an almost inescapable restraint.

Then when you add in the fact that there is no divisional ranking within the Top 20 or Top 25 polls and the whole thing has to be viewed as a laughing matter. Just look at the NCAA polls right now… Do you have any idea where RIT stands relative to D1 and D2 teams? NO? You don’t? That’s probably because they play in different divisions. But doesn’t that happen in high school lacrosse as well? If Taft will never ever play Upper Arlington how do we compare them? If Ward Melville will never play Cazenovia in the playoffs (they are in different NYSPHSAA classes), should they be subject to the same national poll? Why do teams compete for the same national ranking if they don’t even compete against each other to be #1 in their own state?

The same can be said for Catholic schools, like St. Anthony’s and Chaminade, or a military academy like Culver, located in Indiana. I’m not saying these aren’t all great teams, because they certainly are. I am asking why they are ranked with and against non-comparable high school teams… that doesn’t seem to make a ton of sense. When you look at New England prep schools being included, it gets even murkier. Shouldn’t a team with 8 post-graduate players on it be better than almost every other team with no PGs? Why even rank these schools against one another? It’s like ranking Chapman against Air Force or Duke against the NY Lizards… it might be fun, but it makes no sense.

And then you get to the actual rankings, and you can see how impossible this task is RIGHT NOW, in its current form. Why chase an impossibility?

Longmeadown finished last year at 25-0, and they won the Massachusetts D2 title. The Lancers were ranked at #25 in the Final US Lacrosse poll last year. The only interstate team they played was 19-2 Pinkerton, where they won in OT. Pinkerton beat Cape Elizabeth (Maine), lost to Longmeadow (Massachusetts) and lost to Bishop Guertin by 7 in the NH playoffs after beating them by 3 in the regular season. Guertin played Huntington (NY, losing 10-6), St. Joseph Metchuen (NJ, winning 13-9), Christian Brothers (NY, winning 15-7), and Duxbury (MA, losing 12-9). Huntington played no Top 20 teams. SJM played no Top 20 teams. CBA played no Top 20 teams. Duxbury played #4 Garden City (losing 10-1) and lost to #10 Niskayuna 11-3.

At the end of the day, Longmeadow is FIVE games, and four inter-state trips away from playing another Top 20 team. Yet at the end of the year, there they were at #25. It’s not a knock on the Lancers, or their undefeated season, which is always impressive. It just points out how hard it is to rank these schools objectively. Want more proof? Longmeadow is nowhere to be found in the Top 25 poll right now. They also aren’t in the preseason Top 10 for the Northeast and have no players to watch according the US Lacrosse regional report. Longmeadow had six players on The Republican’s All Scholastic Team, and four of those guys return as Seniors this year. It’s not that Longmeadow should be higher, but where did they go? How do you justify removing them, and putting someone else in?

The current approach creates confusion, and makes little to no sense. It is simply trying create a valid ranking from a too-large pool of teams. It’s set up to fail.

So is there a way to do this better?

I’d like to see schools divided into classes personally, and I’d like to see the lines set based on school size, private vs public vs catholic vs prep, and a couple other simple criteria.

Group 1: Public Schools – This would probably be the biggest group of schools, and it would require divisional breakdowns. Class A would be the biggest schools. If your school plays in your State’s biggest class, you are in this ranking group. If your state only has one class for lacrosse, you are included in this group. Class B would be the second largest public school division in your state. Class C would be all the other smaller public schools. If your state only has two classes of public school, your lower division will compete in Class C for national ranking purposes, while your larger schools would be in Class A.

Group 2: Private Schools (no PGs) – All private schools would be lumped into the second group, as long as they did not have post graduate students playing on their lacrosse teams. This group would include private non-religious day and boarding schools from across the country.

Group 3: Catholic, Religious, Reform, Etc. – As long as the school does not have PG students, parochial and reform schools would compete against each other in the rankings. Xaverian in MA, Chaminade in NY, Don Bosco in NJ… all of these schools would be ranked against one another. If other religious based schools play lacrosse, they too would be included in this ranking group. Reform high schools for troubled kids would also play in this group, unless they had PG students.

Group 4: Prep/Private Schools with PGs – Basically if you have PGs playing on your lacrosse team, you’re in this final group. Bridgton Academy, Navy Prep, Deerfield, Choate, Exeter, Hyde (CT)… it would be an interesting mix and a lot of divergent approaches to the game would present themselves. There is no reason these teams should be ranked with other high school teams, but they also deserve a ranking of their own, because this is very good lacrosse!

My above scenario definitely creates more work for the people doing the rankings. There is no doubt about that. But why do rankings at all if they’re not useful? Why mash up ALL the teams from across the country and come out with an unreliable poll that tells us very little when we could be producing something interesting, balanced, and fair?

If the current poll is just done for fun, then I don’t really have a problem with it. It tells us what we already know: VERY good lacrosse is being played in New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania, DC, and Virginia. There are good teams in California, and a good team in Indiana… but can’t we do better than that?

I get that people LOVE ranking things, and I don’t think I’m going to change anyone’s mind there. But would you rank a lacrosse head against a lacrosse glove? Then why are we ranking high school teams that are nothing like one another? Does that really do anything for us?

An equitable set up, where comparable teams are ranked against one another, is not too much to ask. If anyone is going to rank high school teams, it should be done in this manner. Otherwise you’re just looking at the top teams in the top states and throwing them up in a somewhat arbitrary order. We get it, NY and Maryland have a bunch of great programs that are good at lacrosse… now tell us something we don’t know!

My proposed system would push alike schools to playing one another. Public school teams would play public school teams of their same size, privates would play privates, and PGs would stack up with other prep level teams. We might see less Catholic vs Public out of state games, but seeing as those schools are already so different, would it hurt us at all?

Darien High School Boys Lacrosse

Welcome to the online home of the nationally ranked Darien High School Blue Wave boys lacrosse team. Every season the team embarks on a mission striving to continue the tradition of excellence that is embedded within the program. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit. This program has a habit of succeeding.

The Wave is led by Jeff Brameier who this spring will head into his 38th season as the only head coach to walk the sidelines for the Blue Wave. Under “Coach B”, the program has a win/loss record of 611-138 (.814).  The 2020 season was lost to the COVID 19 Pandemic, but the 2019 team finished at 17-5 and were FCIAC Eastern Division Champs and the CLASS L STATE CHAMPS.  The 2018 team was 22-1 FCIAC Champs and Class L Runners-up, while the 2017 team was recognized in numerous polls as NATIONAL CHAMPS after their undefeated season matching the 2016 Team with all being a part of the longest winning streak in Connecticut Boys Lacrosse History at 76.   The program has garnered national recognition with fourteen state titles (1997, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), A LEAGUE RECORD 17 FCIAC championships (1992, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), six state runner-up trophies, 31 trips to the state “Final Four” from (25 straight -1987-2012) – (6 straight – 2014-2019) and having been recognized as the Connecticut Team of the Year in 2005, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2019 by CHSCA and the #1 ranked team in Connecticut over eleven times.

Coach B has had tremendous help from Chris Sgritta – former 2002 DHS Lacrosse & Football Captain  returning to his alma mater for his sixth season this spring as the Associate Head Coach in charge of defense,  which will also have Greg Lewis return as an assistant on varsity.  Keith McGivney will continue as the Head JV coach assisted by Ted Ottens a former Brown Start and faceoff specialist , while on the freshmen we arefortunate to have our two coaches – Ricky Schulman and Ben Potash return to  help make an impact on the players and program.

Andrew McAdorey got the ball, took one step, faked one way and dashed the other with nothing but turf in front of him, leaving behind an attackman on the ground wondering what had just happened as McAdorey’s Team 91 Crush teammate, defenseman Nick LiCalzi (South Side, N.Y./Navy), started laughing at the sight of it all.

Crush was en route to its second straight NLF Class of 2020 national championship at UMass’ Garber Field, and it was one play that showed a lot of what made McAdorey into an elite prospect. You could make the argument that he was the best clearing midfielder in high school lacrosse last year as a sophomore, but he was also a dynamic offensive threat, one that racked up 26 goals and 21 assists as St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) won the state title as part of a 15-1 campaign. Even on a loaded team, McAdorey stood out as one of its very best players all over the field, and he was widely considered the Friars’ top defensive midfielder.

It’s that gamebreaking ability all over the field that made McAdorey the unanimous No. 1 prospect in the class of 2021 in the inaugural National Lacrosse Federation player rankings. He’s played up with the 2020 Crush team forever, helping the country’s top 2020 team to tournament title after tournament title. There’s little doubt that his phone will be working overtime at midnight on Sept. 1, and he’ll be able to go to any school of his choosing.

“It’s humbling, and it’s an honor to be considered No. 1,” McAdorey said. “I definitely have to thank my teammates and coaches for helping me get here, as well as my parents, Mike and Cindy. Playing the best talent around brings out the best in you every time you step on the field, and being surrounded with such great talent like (St. Anthony’s and Crush teammates and Duke commits) Brennan (O’Neill) and Aidan (Danenza), (Shoreham-Wading River, N. Y./North Carolina) Xavier (Arline), (’22 standout) Joey (Spallina) and all of those guys really adds a lot to my game. They’ve helped me a lot, and Coach Joe (Spallina) always said that in order to be the best, you have to play against the best.”

McAdorey isn’t the tallest midfielder, but he’s solidly put together and has that incredible agility, speed and quickness, which means that defending him with a short stick is out of the question. He has an extensive box lacrosse background, too, which shows up in his ability to get his hands free in traffic, which means that he’s a scoring threat from all over the field. His Crush career is over, but the Team 91 dynamo isn’t done making life miserable for goalies or anyone who tries to slow him down on the clear.

“Andrew is a world-class talent and whoever is lucky enough to get him is getting an incredible player with an unparalleled work ethic, and he thinks like a coach,” Spallina said. “To me, that’s a very rare combination. When you combine his athleticism, high IQ and skill, there’s not a doubt that he’s the best player in the 2021 class, and he’ll be an instant-impact type of player in college.”

Welcome to the first National Lacrosse Federation player rankings. We’re kicking things off with the top 50 players in the class of 2021, but there will soon be a top 50 for the class of 2020 and a top 15 for the class of 2022. Players must play for an NLF club or have played at the NLF Opening Weekend or NLF National Championships to be considered for the rankings, which was chosen in consultation with club coaches and college coaches, as well as in-person evaluations. It’s a deep class that’s particularly talented on the defensive end, which is reflected in the 18 defensemen or LSMs that dot the list. More than 100 players were considered for the top 50, and a list of some of the honorable mention names will be published soon. The NLF draws the best players and teams in the country to its events, and many of the players on the rankings will be college lacrosse’s stars of tomorrow.

25 CIAC girls lacrosse players to watch in 2021

Raegan Bailey, Sr., A, Cheshire: The senior attack collected 52 goals and 21 assists as a sophomore and will again be key for the Rams’ offense this spring. She is a returning All-State second team and All-SCC first team selection.

Kate Bellissimo, Sr., MF/D, Darien: The three-sport star will help anchor the Wave’s defense. She will play lacrosse at Stanford next year, joining an impressive line of players who have joined the Cardinal.

Isabelle Casucci, Jr., A, St. Joseph: An impact offensive player as a freshman, she’ll take on an even bigger role as a junior captain. She has verbally committed to play for Marquette.

Caroline Cirilli, Sr., A/MF, Ludlowe:. Emerged as the Falcons’ leading scorer during her sophomore year, showing a knack for playmaking creativity. An All-State second team selection that year, she will play at USC next season.

Heather Clark, Jr., MF/D New Fairfield: The UMass commit provides the Rebels with a strong presence in the midfield and on defense.

McKenna Harden, Sr., MF, New Canaan: The three-sport captain will be part of a strong Rams’ midfielder. She was a CHSCA and GameTimeCT All-State selection as a sophomore, and had committed to play at North Carolina next year.

Amelia Hughes, Jr., G, Wilton: The Princeton commit has been a star performer at every level, and gets her shot with a strong Warriors’ team this spring.

Chloe Humphrey, Soph., A, Darien: The latest Humphrey sister to play for the Wave is the No. 1 recruit in the country for the 2023 class according to Inside Lacrosse. Unfortunately for the Wave, she’ll be sidelined to start the season with a stress fracture in her back.

Nelle Kniffin, Sr., MF/D, Darien: The Colgate commit has been a leader for Darien’s soccer and ice hockey teams, and will headline a midfield which will again be a Wave strength.

Claire Mahoney, Jr., G, New Canaan: An aggressive and athletic goalie, the junior is taking over as the starter after gaining some varsity experience during her freshman season. She has committed to play for Brown.

Molly McGuckin, Jr., A, Darien: The senior with varsity experience will be a key cog in Darien’s offense this spring.

Hollis Mulry, Jr., A, New Canaan: A strong all-around player who can score and distribute. She has verbally committed to play for USC.

Juliana Pagano, Jr., MF, Masuk: A multi-faceted middie who takes draws and scores. She’s committed to play for Bucknell.

Shira Parower, Sr. , A/MF, Staples: Developed into a top scorer for the Wreckers in 2019, when she earned All-State first team honors. She has committed to James Madison.

Dillyn Patten, Jr., A, New Canaan: An impact player as a freshman in 2019 and a speedster with a nose for the goal. She has verbally committed to play at Cornell.

Ceci Stein, Jr., MF, Darien: The midfielder is a solid two-way player, providing offense and defense. She’ll play Div. I lacrosse at Michigan in two years.

Regan Tenaglia, Sr., MF, New Fairfield: A starter on the Rebels’ state championship team in 2019, she returns as a top weapon in the midfield. She will play for the Army lacrosse team next year.

Hannah Tiller, Sr., A, Guilford: The three-year starter helped Guilford win its first-ever SCC championship in 2019, and will be an important offensive weapon this spring. She has committed to play at Boston University.

Sydney Widlitz, Jr., G, Guilford: As a freshman she was named the SCC tournament MVP after making 11 saves in Guilford’s 11-10 overtime win against Cheshire in the final. She provides the Grizzlies with a strong and steady presence in the net.

Ashley Young, Jr., Barlow: The Lehigh commit was a leading scorer as a freshman for the Falcons, and is a top threat again this spring.
