MAAC Announces ESPNU Coverage for 2023 Men’s Lacrosse Season
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has unveiled its eagerly anticipated ESPNU TV schedule for the 2023 men’s lacrosse season. This announcement marks a significant milestone for the conference, as it continues to elevate its presence on the national stage. For the second consecutive year, ESPNU will broadcast two pivotal MAAC contests, bringing the excitement of college lacrosse to a wider audience.
The ESPNU coverage will feature a regular season clash in April and the championship title match in May, providing fans with high-stakes lacrosse action. This increased visibility not only showcases the talent within the MAAC but also serves to promote the sport of lacrosse on a broader scale.
Regular Season Showdown: Siena College vs. Marist College
The regular season MAAC game selected for ESPNU coverage is a midweek matchup between Siena College and Marist College. This highly anticipated contest is scheduled for Wednesday, April 12, with face-off set for 12:00 p.m. ET. The game will take place at Hickey Field on the picturesque campus of Siena College in Loudonville, New York.
This matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter, featuring two of the conference’s top teams. Marist enters the 2023 season as the favorite to clinch the league title, according to the Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Red Foxes received six first-place votes, underscoring their status as the team to beat.
Marist College: The Team to Watch
Marist’s strong preseason ranking is bolstered by the presence of two standout players on the Preseason All-MAAC Team. Graduate students Jojo Pirreca and James Lyons have been recognized for their exceptional skills, with Pirreca also earning the prestigious Preseason Player of the Year accolade.
The Red Foxes are coming off an impressive 2022 campaign, during which they posted a 5-1 MAAC record and secured a share of the regular season championship. However, their title aspirations were cut short in a heartbreaking overtime loss to eventual champion Manhattan in the semifinal round of the 2022 tournament.
- Marist’s 2022 MAAC record: 5-1
- Key players: Jojo Pirreca (Preseason Player of the Year) and James Lyons
- 2022 result: Shared regular season championship, semifinal loss in overtime
Siena College: A Formidable Challenger
Siena College enters the 2023 season ranked third in the preseason poll, behind Marist and defending champion Manhattan. The Saints have made a strong impression by placing a league-high four players on the All-MAAC preseason team, with representation across all areas of the field.
The Saints’ impressive quartet of preseason All-MAAC selections includes:
- Pratt Reynolds (Attack)
- Christian Watts (Midfield)
- Trevor Marsala (Defense)
- Chris Yanchoris (Goalkeeper)
Siena’s balanced lineup suggests they will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season. The Saints are looking to improve upon their 3-3 league record from last year, which earned them the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Their 2022 campaign concluded with a narrow 12-10 loss to top overall seed St. Bonaventure in the semifinals of the MAAC Championship.
2023 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship: The Road to Glory
The 2023 MAAC Men’s Lacrosse Championship promises to be an exciting culmination of the season, with six teams vying for the coveted title. The single-elimination tournament will unfold over several days, providing fans with intense lacrosse action and high-stakes drama.
Tournament Format and Schedule
The championship tournament will follow this schedule:
- Opening Round: Saturday, April 29 (hosted by higher seeds)
- Semifinals: Thursday, May 4
- Championship Final: Saturday, May 6
The semifinals and championship final will be hosted by the highest remaining seed in the field, adding an extra layer of excitement and home-field advantage to the proceedings. The championship title game is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPNU, bringing the intense action and emotion of the final match to a national audience.
