What are the essential pieces of lacrosse equipment for players. How to choose the right size helmet for lacrosse. What protective gear is required for boys vs girls lacrosse. How to select properly fitting lacrosse gloves and arm pads.
Essential Lacrosse Equipment for Players
Lacrosse is a fast-paced and physical sport that requires specific equipment to ensure player safety and performance. The gear needed varies somewhat between boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, but there are several key pieces that all players require:
- Lacrosse stick
- Mouthguard
- Cleats
- Protective equipment (varies by gender and age group)
For boys’ lacrosse, additional protective gear is required as the game allows for more physical contact. Girls’ lacrosse has less protective equipment but still requires key safety items. Let’s explore the essential gear for each in more detail.
Boys’ Lacrosse Protective Equipment
Boys’ lacrosse involves significant physical contact, especially from the U13 level onwards. As such, players need comprehensive protective gear to ensure their safety on the field.
Helmets
A properly fitted helmet is crucial for protecting a player’s head during gameplay. For U13 or first-year older players, many clubs provide loaner helmets. However, it’s recommended that players purchase their own helmets after their initial season.
Popular helmet brands include Cascade and Warrior, each offering various styles and sizes. Most helmet styles come in one or two size options, typically S/M and M/L. It’s essential to try on a helmet before purchasing to ensure a proper fit.
Gloves
Gloves are necessary for U13 players and older. While clubs often loan gloves to first-year players, it’s advisable for players to purchase their own after gaining some experience. Glove sizes vary based on the player’s age and hand size:
- 10″ suitable for U12
- 12″ suitable for most boys up to around 15 years
- 13″ is the most common size for older boys and most men
- 14″ for those with very large hands
Many brands offer lacrosse gloves, including Brine, Warrior, STX, and Epoch, with a wide range of colors and styles available.
Arm Protection
Arm pads are required for U14 players and older to provide protection during checking. There are three main styles of arm protection:
- Elbow pads: Small pads designed for defenders (not recommended for juniors)
- Arm pads: Good for defenders and midfielders, offering solid protection
- Arm guards: Designed for attackers, offering maximum protection
Sizing arm pads for junior players can be challenging due to growth during teenage years. It’s important to find a balance between current fit and room for growth. General sizing guidelines are:
- Small: Designed for pre-teen juniors
- Medium: Suitable for teenage arms
- Large: Adult-sized arms, often suitable for older teens
Shoulder Pads
Shoulder pads are highly recommended for boys from U14 and up. They offer two primary benefits:
- Protection of the shoulder in collisions, preventing collarbone injuries
- Protection of the sternum from stray shots
Sizing for shoulder pads is similar to arm pads, with most boys using either medium or large sizes.
Girls’ Lacrosse Protective Equipment
While girls’ lacrosse involves less physical contact than boys’ lacrosse, protective equipment is still essential for player safety.
Goggles
From the U13 level, girls’ lacrosse uses a hard rubber ball, making eye protection crucial. All girls are required to wear protective goggles during games and training sessions. Many clubs provide loaner goggles for U13 girls, but players are typically expected to purchase their own from U15 onwards.
Goggles generally come in two sizes:
- Youth: Targeted at girls up to the age of 13
- Adult: Suitable for older players
It’s important to note that youth goggles may be too narrow for older players, so proper sizing is crucial for comfort and protection.
Selecting the Right Lacrosse Stick
The lacrosse stick is perhaps the most essential piece of equipment for any player. Choosing the right stick depends on several factors, including the player’s position, skill level, and personal preference.
Stick Length
Stick length varies based on the player’s position and age group:
- Attack and midfield: 40-42 inches for most players
- Defense: 52-72 inches
- Goalies: 40-72 inches
For youth players, shorter sticks are often recommended to help develop proper stick-handling skills.
Pocket Type
The pocket of the lacrosse stick can be either mesh or traditional (strung with leather and nylon). Each type has its advantages:
- Mesh: Easier to maintain, more consistent in various weather conditions
- Traditional: Offers more feel and control, but requires more maintenance
Beginners often start with mesh pockets due to their ease of use and lower maintenance requirements.
Importance of Proper Mouthguard Use
Mouthguards are mandatory for all lacrosse players, including those wearing helmets. This requirement extends to any training sessions involving potential contact or the risk of being struck by a ball.
Why are mouthguards so crucial in lacrosse?
- Protect teeth from impact
- Reduce the risk of concussions
- Prevent cuts and injuries to the lips, tongue, and cheeks
When selecting a mouthguard, consider the following options:
- Boil-and-bite mouthguards: Offer a custom fit at an affordable price
- Custom-fitted mouthguards: Provide the best protection and comfort, but are more expensive
- Stock mouthguards: Less expensive but offer minimal protection and comfort
For optimal protection and comfort, a properly fitted mouthguard is essential.
Goalie-Specific Equipment
Goalies in lacrosse require specialized equipment due to the unique demands of their position. Most clubs provide goalie-specific gear, including:
- Chest protector
- Goalie helmet (which may differ from field player helmets)
- Throat guard
- Goalie gloves (which have extra padding compared to field player gloves)
While clubs often provide this equipment, serious goalies may choose to purchase their own gear for a more personalized fit and consistent use.
Purchasing and Maintaining Lacrosse Equipment
Acquiring and properly caring for lacrosse equipment is crucial for both performance and longevity of the gear. Here are some tips for purchasing and maintaining your lacrosse equipment:
Where to Buy Lacrosse Equipment
There are several options for purchasing lacrosse gear:
- Local sporting goods stores
- Online retailers specializing in lacrosse equipment
- Club partnerships with suppliers (which may offer discounts to members)
Many clubs have arrangements with local or online suppliers that provide discounts to members. For example, the Camberwell Lacrosse Club has a partnership with UltraFootball, offering competitive prices on Nike and Adidas gear.
Caring for Your Equipment
Proper maintenance of lacrosse equipment can extend its life and ensure it continues to provide adequate protection:
- Clean gear regularly to prevent odor and bacteria buildup
- Store equipment in a cool, dry place to prevent warping or degradation
- Inspect gear before each use for signs of wear or damage
- Replace protective equipment that shows signs of significant wear or damage
By taking good care of your equipment, you can ensure it lasts longer and continues to provide the necessary protection during play.
Understanding Lacrosse Equipment Regulations
Lacrosse equipment must meet specific regulations set by governing bodies to ensure player safety and fair play. These regulations can vary between different leagues, age groups, and genders.
Common Equipment Regulations
While specific rules may vary, some common equipment regulations include:
- Stick length and head dimensions
- Required protective gear for each position and age group
- Color restrictions for certain equipment pieces
- Specifications for ball type and weight
It’s important for players, coaches, and parents to familiarize themselves with the specific equipment regulations for their league and age group to ensure compliance and avoid penalties.
Differences Between Boys’ and Girls’ Equipment Regulations
Equipment regulations can differ significantly between boys’ and girls’ lacrosse due to the variations in physical contact allowed in each version of the sport:
- Boys’ lacrosse requires more protective equipment due to increased physical contact
- Girls’ lacrosse has stricter regulations on stick pocket depth to encourage more skillful play
- Goalie equipment requirements may vary between boys’ and girls’ leagues
Understanding these differences is crucial for players transitioning between leagues or for those involved in both boys’ and girls’ lacrosse programs.
The Role of Technology in Lacrosse Equipment
As with many sports, technological advancements have significantly impacted lacrosse equipment design and performance. From improved materials to innovative designs, technology continues to shape the world of lacrosse gear.
Advanced Materials in Lacrosse Equipment
Modern lacrosse equipment often incorporates advanced materials to enhance performance and safety:
- Lightweight yet durable plastics for helmet shells
- Impact-absorbing foams for padding
- Moisture-wicking fabrics for uniforms and gloves
- Carbon fiber and other composite materials for stick shafts
These materials contribute to equipment that is lighter, stronger, and more protective than ever before.
Innovative Designs
Equipment manufacturers continually develop new designs to improve player performance and safety:
- Helmets with advanced ventilation systems
- Gloves with enhanced flexibility and protection
- Stick heads designed for improved ball control and shot accuracy
- Cleats optimized for quick movements and sudden stops
These innovations not only enhance player performance but also contribute to increased safety on the field.
The Future of Lacrosse Equipment
As technology continues to advance, we can expect to see further improvements in lacrosse equipment:
- Smart helmets with impact sensors
- Customizable equipment using 3D printing technology
- Advanced materials that offer even better protection with less bulk
- Integrated technology for performance tracking and analysis
These advancements promise to make the sport safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for players at all levels.
In conclusion, understanding the various aspects of lacrosse equipment, from selection and sizing to maintenance and technological advancements, is crucial for players, coaches, and parents involved in the sport. By staying informed about equipment regulations, caring for gear properly, and keeping up with the latest innovations, lacrosse enthusiasts can ensure they’re well-equipped for success and safety on the field.

Girls protective
Goggles: From U13, girls lacrosse uses a hard rubber ball. All girls will be required to wear eye protection (goggles) in games and training. The club will provide loan goggles for U13 girls. We ask that players purchase their own goggles from U15.
Goggle sizing: goggles generally come in two sizes, Youth and Adult. Youth are targeted at girls up to the age of 13 and may be too narrow for older ages.
Boys Protective
From U13 onwards, the boy’s lacrosse game includes physical contact. The minimum of safety equipment that players will be required to wear for games and training are:
Helmets: the club will provide loan helmets to U13 or first-year older players. After that, we recommend players purchase their own helmets. Common helmet brands are Cascade and Warrior, with each coming in a range of styles and sizes. Most styles come in one or two sizes (e.g. S/M and M/L). It is recommended that a helmet is tried for size before purchase.
Gloves: gloves are necessary for U13 and older. The club will loan gloves to first-year players. After that, we recommend that players purchase their own.

Arm pads: are required for U14 and older to ensure safety when being checked. The three styles of arm pads are:
- elbow pad: small pads designed for defenders (not recommended for juniors)
- Arm pad: good for defenders and midfielders, offering good protection
- Arm guard: designed for attackers offer maximum protection
Sizing of arm pads can be tricky for juniors because they tend to bulk up through their teenage years, but buying too large will result in the pad sliding down the arm
- small: designed for pre-teen juniors
- medium: teenage arms
- large: adult-sized arms, often suitable
Shoulder pads: shoulder pads are highly recommended for boys from U14 up. The two particular benefits they offer are the protection of the shoulder in a collision, preventing collarbone injuries, and protection of the sternum being hit by a stray shot. The sizing is similar to arm pads, with most boys taking either medium or large.
Goalie gear is provided by the club: Chest pad, goalie helmet The club will provide loan equipment to first-year players. After a season, we request that players start to purchase their own.
