- Team Bonding: Extended time together during tournaments strengthens team chemistry and camaraderie.
- Individual Skill Showcase: Players have opportunities to demonstrate their abilities in front of coaches and scouts.
- Learning from Defeat: Tough competition teaches resilience and the value of learning from losses.
How do these experiences translate to long-term player development? The intense, competitive nature of tournaments like the Black Diamond Championship accelerates player growth by condensing challenges and learning opportunities into a short timeframe. Players often return from such events with increased confidence, a better understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, and renewed motivation to improve. These tournaments also provide valuable experiences in time management, dealing with travel fatigue, and maintaining focus over multiple games – skills that benefit athletes in their future basketball careers and beyond.
The Black Diamond Championship, with its diverse age groups and comprehensive structure, exemplifies the positive impact that well-organized youth basketball tournaments can have on player development. By providing a platform for competition, skill showcase, and personal growth, events like this play a vital role in shaping the future of basketball talent.

Black diamond – the secrets of former popularity. News of the laboratory of the Gemological Center of Moscow State University
Black diamonds have been known to mankind since the beginning of the 18th century. The first carbonado deposits were discovered first in Brazil (Bahia), and then in Venezuela, South Africa. Deposits of black diamond are very rare, despite the lower value of this stone compared to colorless diamond.
Black diamonds rose to the peak of popularity in the late 90s of the last century thanks to the de Grisogono jewelry brand. More than 20 years ago, the company released the first collection with black diamonds, it was a resounding success and was sold out immediately after the announcement.
Ornella Muti at the presentation of the collection with black diamonds by the jewelry brand de Grisogono, December 1998
The value of black diamonds increased 20 times thanks to de Grisogono’s strong marketing campaign and the global demand for these stones increased. They were used not only in jewelry and watches, black stones were inlaid in mobile phones, wardrobe items.
People began to actively acquire black diamonds without realizing the fact that there were probably more than 90% of these stones were ennobled by annealing. In most cases, black diamonds were sold without any mention of refinement. But when it became a well-known fact, the value of black diamonds in the eyes of the public fell, and they ceased to be in great demand, thus returning prices to their previous level. Brands began to refuse to use black diamonds. Now these stones are still used in jewelry, but they are no longer as popular. And if in past periods jewelers could not mention whether the stones were ennobled, today the disclosure of ennoblement is a requirement of the rules of the jewelry trade.
There are two types of black diamonds: polycrystalline (carbonado) and monocrystalline. Polycrystalline black diamonds, or carbonados, are very specific and differ significantly from all other diamonds in isotopic composition and structure. This allows us not only to distinguish carbonado as a completely independent variety of polycrystalline diamond formations, but also as a variety of the mineral species itself and to assume formation conditions different from the classical colorless diamond. By themselves, they are intergrowths of diamond grains no larger than 20 micrometers in size, in the pores between which there are silicate material and iron oxides, which give the carbonado a dark color. Often such polycrystalline formations have a zonal color: darker on the outside and light in the inner zones.
Single-crystal black diamond is colored mainly by inclusions of dark-colored minerals (graphite, chromium spinels, pyroxenes, etc.), which form dense accumulations in the outer zone of the crystal. In some cases, it happens that the central part of the stone is colorless and transparent. Intergrowths of 2-3 single-crystal diamond crystals can also occur, therefore, such diamonds have an affinity for the formation of polycrystalline formations, as described above carbonado. There is also a color variety of such diamonds called “salt and pepper” (“salt and pepper”), which is unevenly colored gray or black diamond crystals. “Salt and pepper” diamonds are sometimes used in modern accent jewelry.
The color centers of black diamond are poorly understood, but it is known that the most common nitrogen centers N2 and N3 are present in it. The N3 system is responsible for the blue luminescence in the central region of such diamonds. Often such stones can be colored by natural radioactive radiation caused by the GR1 system. A structural defect of this type is fixed in natural diamonds in the surface zone of crystals and often manifests itself in the form of green and brown spots. There are studies confirming a different kind of color centers in diamond, associated with hydrogen impurities, which have the appearance of “clouds” and are located throughout the volume of the stone.
Natural diamonds of low color characteristics with a loss of transparency are often ennobled to give a black color. The most common methods are heat treatment using low pressure, HPHT treatment (using high pressure and temperature) and electron irradiation. When annealed at low pressure, graphitization is observed along the cracks in the volume of the stone, which leads to a uniform black color. In stones exposed to radioactive radiation, dark brown spots around cracks are fixed, inert to radiation in the short-wave UV range. The key difference between such stones is that in natural diamonds, graphite inclusions and zones colored by the radiation of various particles are localized not only in cracks. When irradiated with high-energy electrons, diamonds most often acquire a dark green color, almost black, throughout the entire volume of the stone. Such a uniform coloration is not typical for naturally colored black stones, in which the color is not uniformly distributed in the surface zones. To diagnose the origin of the black color of such diamonds requires careful examination under a microscope and the use of Raman spectrometry. It should be noted that most often black diamonds are ennobled by annealing, irradiation is rarely used for this purpose.
As we can see, the refinement of black diamonds is quite common, and in most cases it cannot be established without contacting laboratories that can diagnose the refinement. An interesting sample of a black diamond weighing about 1 carat was recently examined at the Gemological Center of Moscow State University. Unusual in it is a film of oxidation, visible when viewed through a microscope and turning the stone. It is unevenly distributed. It is also interesting that when studying from the side of the site using Raman microscopy, it turned out that areas of amorphous graphite alternate with areas of diamond, while from the pavilion the laboratory analyst sees the ideal Raman spectrum of natural diamond. Amorphous carbon is a modification of carbon without an ordered crystal structure, in contrast to natural graphite, which has a layered structure. In this regard, we can draw conclusions about the annealing of the stone at a high temperature, and the heating of the sample could be uneven. The unusual oxidation film is clearly visible from the side of the site and looks like an uneven doublet boundary, which can lead to an erroneous conclusion about the composite nature of the stone. In addition, the surface of the pavilion of the stone looks quite cavernous, numerous cracks are shown on the platform of the black diamond. Photo under a microscope with magnification can be seen in the figures below.

At Sotheby’s auction in February 2022, the world’s largest cut black diamond Enigma weighing 555.55 carats was sold. Interestingly, this stone has 55 facets. The stone was paid for with cryptocurrency, which is uncharacteristic for the jewelry industry as a whole. An extraordinary black diamond went up for auction for more than $4.2 million. It is believed that it was formed as a result of a meteorite fall. According to another version, this is a fragment of a diamond-bearing asteroid that collided with the Earth. But while these are just hypotheses, it is impossible to say for sure whether this was actually the case. However, this “provenance” created an image of mystery, mysticism and incredible rarity for the stone, all that attracts people, and definitely contributed to the excitement around the auction.
