How does the NCAA treat men’s and women’s lacrosse tournaments differently. Why is there a disparity in game scheduling and TV coverage between genders. What impact does this have on growing the sport of women’s lacrosse.
The Glaring Disparity in NCAA Lacrosse Tournament Coverage
The 2021 NCAA Lacrosse Tournaments have brought to light significant differences in how men’s and women’s sports are treated at the collegiate level. As the Division I tournaments enter their quarterfinal rounds, the contrast in scheduling and media coverage between the men’s and women’s games is stark and troubling.
Men’s Tournament Quarterfinals Schedule
- Virginia vs. Georgetown: 12 PM, Saturday on ESPNU
- North Carolina vs. Rutgers: 2:30 PM, Saturday on ESPNU
- Duke vs. Loyola: 12 PM, Sunday on ESPNU
- Maryland vs. Notre Dame: 2:30 PM, Sunday on ESPNU
Women’s Tournament Quarterfinals Schedule
- North Carolina vs. Stony Brook: 12 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
- Northwestern vs. Duke: 1 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
- Syracuse vs. Florida: 2 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
- Boston College vs. Notre Dame: 3 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
The differences are immediately apparent. The men’s games are spread across two days with individual time slots, all televised on ESPNU. In contrast, the women’s games are crammed into a single day with overlapping schedules, relegated to online streaming on ESPN 3.
The Impact of Unfair Scheduling on Viewership and Sport Growth
The scheduling disparity raises serious concerns about the ability of fans to fully engage with the women’s tournament. With only one-hour gaps between game start times, it’s impossible to watch any single game in its entirety without missing parts of another. This setup forces viewers to choose between games or attempt to juggle multiple devices to follow the action.
Taylor Cummings, a former Maryland standout and three-time Tewaaraton winner, expressed her frustration on Twitter: “So excited to watch one half of each game instead of watching all 4 full games like I did with the men’s tournament yesterday. That’s exactly how I like to watch the best lacrosse of the year… what a joke.”
This scheduling approach not only diminishes the viewing experience but also hampers the growth of women’s lacrosse. How can the sport attract new fans and inspire young athletes if the highest level of competition is made difficult to watch in its entirety?
The Broader Issue of Gender Inequality in NCAA Sports
Unfortunately, this disparity in lacrosse coverage is not an isolated incident. It’s part of a larger pattern of unequal treatment between men’s and women’s sports in collegiate athletics. Recent examples include:
- Significant differences in weight-room facilities for men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments
- Cancellation of a Division I women’s golf regional due to “unplayable” conditions, while allowing men’s teams to practice on the same course
- Consistently unequal treatment in areas such as facilities, equipment, and scheduling across various sports
These issues highlight a systemic problem within the NCAA, where women’s sports are often treated as secondary to men’s, despite the incredible talent, dedication, and entertainment value they provide.
The Excitement and Appeal of Women’s Lacrosse
Women’s lacrosse offers a thrilling spectacle that deserves equal recognition and promotion. Teams like Syracuse showcase an exciting, fast-paced style of play that keeps fans on the edge of their seats. North Carolina’s powerhouse team, led by some of the nation’s best players, demonstrates the high level of skill and athleticism in the women’s game.
Individual stars like Northwestern’s Izzy Scane, a prolific goal-scorer, and Boston College’s Charlotte North, known for her freakish athleticism and lacrosse skills, provide electrifying performances that captivate audiences. These athletes and teams have the potential to inspire the next generation of lacrosse players and grow the sport’s fanbase significantly.
The Role of Media in Perpetuating Inequality
While the NCAA bears primary responsibility for the scheduling disparities, media outlets also play a role in perpetuating the unequal treatment of women’s sports. ESPN, for instance, promoted the fact that it was airing the women’s tournament in its entirety for the first time ever. However, this announcement rings hollow when considering that only three of 28 women’s games are televised, compared to all 15 men’s games.
This discrepancy in media coverage not only reflects the existing inequality but also reinforces it by limiting the exposure of women’s lacrosse to potential new fans and sponsors. It’s a cycle that needs to be broken to achieve true equality in sports coverage.
The Call for Equal Treatment in Collegiate Sports
The situation with the lacrosse tournaments is a clear indication that it’s long past time for the NCAA to provide equal treatment to women’s sports. This equality should extend across all aspects of collegiate athletics, including:
- Scheduling of games and tournaments
- Television and streaming coverage
- Facilities and equipment
- Marketing and promotion
- Financial support and resources
Achieving this equality is not just about fairness; it’s about recognizing the value and potential of women’s sports. It’s about providing equal opportunities for female athletes to showcase their skills and build their careers. Moreover, it’s about growing the overall fanbase for sports like lacrosse by ensuring that all exciting games and talented athletes receive the spotlight they deserve.
Moving Forward: Steps Towards Equality in Collegiate Lacrosse
To address the current disparities and move towards a more equitable future for collegiate lacrosse, several steps could be taken:
- Equal scheduling: Ensure that both men’s and women’s tournament games are given individual time slots across multiple days to allow for maximum viewership.
- Balanced media coverage: Negotiate broadcast deals that provide equal television coverage for men’s and women’s games.
- Increased promotion: Invest in marketing and promotional efforts to raise the profile of women’s lacrosse and its star players.
- Fan engagement: Develop strategies to make it easier for fans to follow and engage with women’s lacrosse throughout the season and during tournaments.
- Youth development: Support programs that encourage young girls to take up lacrosse and provide them with equal resources and opportunities to develop their skills.
By implementing these changes, the NCAA and its media partners could significantly improve the landscape for women’s lacrosse and set a positive example for equality in all collegiate sports.
The Potential Impact of Equalizing Coverage and Support
Imagine a world where women’s lacrosse receives the same level of coverage, support, and respect as men’s lacrosse. What could this mean for the sport?
- Increased viewership and fan engagement
- Greater sponsorship opportunities and financial support
- Inspiration for young athletes, particularly girls, to pursue the sport
- Overall growth and expansion of lacrosse as a mainstream sport
li>Enhanced player development and competition levels
By providing equal treatment and opportunities, we not only do right by the talented athletes competing at the collegiate level but also pave the way for the continued growth and success of women’s lacrosse at all levels.
Conclusion: A Call to Action for Equality in Collegiate Lacrosse
The disparity in treatment between men’s and women’s lacrosse tournaments is a symptom of a larger problem in collegiate athletics. It’s time for the NCAA, media partners, and the broader sports community to recognize the value of women’s sports and take concrete steps towards achieving true equality.
As fans, we can contribute to this change by voicing our support for equal treatment, tuning in to women’s games whenever possible, and demanding better coverage from sports networks. By working together, we can create a future where all athletes, regardless of gender, have the opportunity to shine on an equal playing field.
The excitement, skill, and dedication displayed in women’s lacrosse deserve nothing less than full recognition and support. It’s time to level the playing field and give women’s lacrosse the platform it truly deserves.
Syracuse (and all of) women’s lacrosse deserves better than this
We are at the point with the NCAA where they are not even trying to hide the fact that they fail to provide equal treatment for men’s and women’s collegiate sports.
Back in March, social media was lit up with images of the ridiculous differences between the weight-room facilities for the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments. Just last week, a Division I women’s golf regional was cancelled for conditions that were “not playable at a championship level” on the same day that a men’s team was allowed to practice on the same course.
And now, the inequality spotlight is shining on lacrosse.
With the Division I tournaments entering their quarterfinal rounds, the men and women each have four lacrosse games this coming weekend.
And that’s pretty much where the similarities end for the two.
The men’s games all have their own individual time slots over the course of two days and will all be televised on ESPN U:
- Virginia vs. Georgetown: 12 PM, Saturday on ESPNU
- North Carolina vs. Rutgers: 2:30 PM, Saturday on ESPNU
- Duke vs. Loyola: 12 PM, Sunday on ESPNU
- Maryland vs. Notre Dame: 2:30 PM, Sunday on ESPNU
The women, you ask? Well, it turns out all of their games will be on the same day, staggered on top of each other and televised on a website:
- North Carolina vs. Stony Brook: 12 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
- Northwestern vs. Duke: 1 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
- Syracuse vs. Florida: 2 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
- Boston College vs. Notre Dame: 3 PM, Saturday on ESPN 3
There is a one hour gap between the start times of all four games, which means that you cannot watch any one game in it’s entirety without another game being played at the same time. And since the games are on ESPN 3, that means you’ll need to have at least two and probably three laptops, tablets, or phones in front of you in order to see all the overlapping action.
To be frank, the disparity between the two is a disgrace. It’s a bad joke. Can you imagine scheduling the men’s quarterfinals the way they have the women’s?
The NCAA would NEVER.
I think former Maryland standout and three-time Tewaaraton winner Taylor Cummings summed it up best with two tweets (the first is about last weekend’s games):
Three games at 12pm tomorrow and five at 1pm…… WHY are they not staggered like the men’s games? HOW can we grow our sport if there are so many incredible games being played at the same time? @NCAALAX @espnW @espn
— Taylor Cummings (@tcummings_21) May 15, 2021
A 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, & 3pm game next weekend for the @NCAALAX Elite Eight. So excited to watch one half of each game instead of watching all 4 full games like I did with the men’s tournament yesterday. That’s exactly how I like to watch the best lacrosse of the year what a joke.
— Taylor Cummings (@tcummings_21) May 17, 2021
What more is there to say?
The NCAA is quite brazenly showing us all that, once again, they don’t give equal treatment to men’s and women’s sports. Whether it’s facilities, equipment, or scheduling, the inequality is seemingly ever-present.
For their part, ESPN actually had the audacity to promote the fact that it was airing the women’s tournament in its entirety for the first time ever.
Great work, guys. All 15 men’s games on TV. Just three of 28 women’s games on TV.
Sure, why should the NCAA be the only ones showing little respect to the women’s game?
Women’s lacrosse is a ton of fun to watch. Our own Syracuse Orange are a great example of that, as they continually race up and down the field, pouring goals in with their exciting brand of lacrosse despite their major injuries. Elsewhere, North Carolina is an unstoppable force led by a stable of the best players in the country. Northwestern’s Izzy Scane is a goal-scoring machine leading an offense that scores 20 goals a game. BC’s Charlotte North displays her freakish athleticism and lacrosse skill every time she takes the field.
Women’s lacrosse has so much to offer fans of all ages, especially the young girls and boys whose potential interest can one day help to grow the game more and more.
Too bad they’ll have to choose which games to watch this Saturday.
It’s long past time for the NCAA to give women’s sports equal treatment. That’s not asking too much, right? It is what they deserve, after all.
NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Tournament Final Four Predictions
North Carolina vs Virginia
Safe: UVA was definitely impressive versus Georgetown and their aggressive play was the difference last weekend. However, so long as UNC doesn’t get dominated on faceoffs, I think the Tar Heels should prevail in this one. I am going with North Carolina.
Adam: I think we need to pump the brakes on Virginia’s defense suddenly turning things around. They didn’t look great against Bryant and then happened to match up really well athletically with Georgetown. North Carolina is a different story. With Gray and their midfield, they have the athletes to make life difficult for the Hoos D, like they’ve done twice already this season. Carolina rebounds from the scare against Rutgers and heads to the title game.
Jake: I’m really not sure which way to go here. Carolina has been the better team throughout the season, but Virginia feels like the hotter one, and it’s been a long time since they’ve lost in this tournament. If Carolina was fully healthy I’d go with the Heels, but I think some of their injuries limit their offense like we saw against Rutgers and the Cavs defense is peaking. ‘Hoos get back to Monday. Virginia.
Ryan: This will be an interesting one, as Virginia’s playing their best lacrosse all year and was the only team in the Final Four not to have a scare in the quarterfinals last weekend. But kind of similar in a way I feel being battle tested will help the Carolina women in their final four, I think the same holds for the men. I highly doubt a Lars Tiffany coached team will come out overconfident, but if they do, that can be a big opportunity for the Heels to pounce. North Carolina
Chris: Virginia
Duke vs Maryland
Safe: We still are not sure if Maryland is any good but I think the Terps will continue their undefeated run and make it to Memorial Day. MARYLAND with the win.
Adam: Duke hasn’t played a great game against a great opponent since April 10th against Notre Dame. That’s what they’ll need to do to beat the Terps. They’ve been squeaking by, as that’s what good teams do, but the Final Four is typically when life starts to catch up with you. I just think Maryland is a little bit better on both ends of the field. If Duke wins it’ll be because Naso dominated at the X and Adler far outpaced McNaney in cage. Duke should win both those matchups but the Terps will make it close enough so that their talent on O and D win the day by a goal or two.
Jake: I sort of have a feeling this one might not be as close as everyone thinks. Duke’s defense played very well against Loyola, but Loyola had no dodgers. Maryland has several, including the best in the country. And basically every goal Duke gave up was off of ball movement or off ball cutting. Things Maryland does great. Meanwhile Duke’s offense just does not convince. They find ways, but it’s never felt like the pieces have come together. Maryland has a defense like Notre Dame to shut them down and I think they do. Duke has found ways all year long and very well could again, but the Terps and not all that close IMO. Maryland.
Ryan: I keep on asking myself with Duke “will the chemistry project come together?” After High Point, it was looking like it. But against Loyola, they once again didn’t look that cohesive together. Maryland, on the other hand, has that chemistry in every unit on the field. If Bernhardt and company are humming, Duke certainly has the capability to match them with Sowers, O’Neill, and Robertson, but I just don’t know if they can click it together in time as a unit. Terps take this one by about 3 or 4 goals in the end. Safe will be insufferable because a Big Ten team beat an ACC team and once again diminishes the Hopkins-Maryland rivalry like he has with Hopkins-Syracuse. Maryland
Chris: Maryland
National Champion
Safe: Terps have waited 5 years to tag Carolina back for UNC’s win over MD in the 2016 title game. I think Maryland gets its revenge in what should be an exciting title game. Maryland wins and becomes the first undefeated champion since UVA in 2006.
Adam: 2016 rematch. Maryland exorcises their demons from that game so Jake can stop talking about how the 2016 game never happened. It very much happened, and it’s why Maryland will win this time. Congrats to Bobby Benson.
Jake: Maryland. I picked them in January and now they’re here so I’m sticking with it. They’re just the most well balanced team in this tournament and Final Four for my money. There’s no “bad” matchup out there for them because of it. And they have a piece no one else has in #1 in white or red, who no one’s had an answer for all year. I’ll take the Terps to lift the gold trophy again.
Ryan: This one has classic written all over it like the 2016 one was, and these two teams have been in that elite tier all year and step up at the best time. Both team’s strengths come to full display, but I think the game gets won and lost between the restraining boxes. What that means is I think UNC’s rides and clears ends up becoming the difference maker. Either team can win this and either team’s going to be a real deserving champ, but I think one huge late ride out of the Heels ends up being the turning point in determining the national champ. North Carolina

90,000 Australian Open has become an event agency. Evolution has just begun
Fortnite Tournament, its own simulator and breakthrough tennis formats.
Over the years,
Australian Open has turned from a tournament purely for a tennis audience not even just into a media company (as is the case with many), but into a full-fledged event agency, for which two weeks in January is the flagship, but not the only event.
Grand Slam tournaments in the structure of the tennis season are distinguished by at least significant autonomy (managers can themselves determine the nuances of the rules – for example, this season, all top tournaments have a different format of decisive sets), and the near-tournament program is a space for the organizers’ imagination.
The Australian Open is ruled by Tennis Australia – a national federation, that is, it has enough current tasks at a basic level, but it is quite logical that the Australian Open became the basis for commercial activities.
“Since I have been managing Tennis Australia and the Australian Open since 2013, we have doubled our revenue and tripled our profits,” said CEO Craig Tiley in an interview with The Coach Steve Clark Show. – We operate on the basis of a very simple installation: to create maximum comfort for the guests. The guests in our case are the players, the fans in the stands, and the viewers of the broadcasts. We divided the organization of the tournament into three large components, in each direction we strive to create the best impression. Purposeful, but multidirectional work is important, because each category of guests needs something different. ”
These are the main projects and areas of work of the Australians, which made the tournament breakthrough, and the organization – commercially successful.
1) Since 2017, the tournament has a new identity, which is as adequate as possible to the digital age: the laconic letters AO were not accepted right away instead of the serving man who held out for more than 20 years, but in the end, more or less everyone appreciated how accessible it is and at the same time polyhedral symbol. For example, AO-video screens become a photo zone, spellbinding moving Mobius strips and other art-figures on panels along the courts are composed of letters, rotated 90 degrees A – an icon denoting a telegraph feed, and so on.
The marketing department of the tournament calls such a design human-centered (their wording is human-centered design), which means accessibility for any person. They recognize the important thing: for many years the Australian Open has addressed only those who already play tennis, or at least have a decent interest in it, now the focus, on the contrary, is on the audience, which has not yet been reached at all.The representatives of the tournament are explained by a beautiful metaphor: such an identity for them is a means of transportation, depending on the needs and goals at a particular moment, it can be easily adapted to the required format. The cumbersome logo with the full name and silhouette of the tennis player greatly constrained.
2) One of the methods of reaching a new audience – additional events within a large, almost three-week tournament – a convenient basis. Concert venues and restaurants are no longer surprising and more likely belong to a mandatory program, but the Fortnite cyber tournament right on the tennis arena is a format that impressed the Australian Open. The first Fortnite Summer Smash was held on the day of the 2019 Women’s Finals, the second is scheduled for February 1, also on the last Saturday of the tournament.
At Fornite, the Australian Open bosses were inspired by a successful musical experiment: the organizers saw that on the days of top concerts, entrance tickets were bought, among other things, by the audience, which first of all went to the musicians, and tennis, if it was captivating, then secondarily. A cyber tournament is a cool way to fill a location when there is not much tennis anymore. The play area will be equipped at Margaret Court, the second most important arena in the complex. In fact, in recent days it has really not been in demand: the main matches are staked at the Rod Laver Arena, and the juniors have enough and more modest courts.
Australian Open has agreed on a partnership with the developer Epic Games, while the tournament is still entertaining, and not official: for example, the scoring is adapted for the tennis format. The tournament has its own production team, it is streamed on Twitch on the AO channel. The evolution of the Australian Open – including the change in the tasks of some employees. For example, Tennis Australia product manager Rob O’Gorman was previously focused on television and is now in charge of the Fortnite event.
Already at the end of the first Fortnite Summer Smash, the organizers recorded the Saturday peak of visits to children with their parents. For a challenge tournament, add this audience to the multi-layered communication, and then instill in children a loyalty to tennis.
3) Another contact of the Australian Open with the esports audience is its own tennis simulator.AO Tennis 2 launched in time for the 2020 tournament and is available on major platforms starting January 20th. On the cover of the second game of the series – the first numbers of the tournament Ashley Barty and Rafael Nadal, they are in the game, like many other top players, too.
The second game was released a year and a half after the first, it was rated much higher due to gameplay improvements and new modes. Developed by the Australian company Big Ant, its profile includes rugby, lacrosse and cricket simulators.
4) In parallel, Tennis Australia is also engaged in other high-profile projects: for example, many employees participate in the organization of the Laver Cup, a commercial tournament for Roger Federer and his business partner, initially just agent Tony Godsick (from time to time claims are sent to the organizers of the Australian Open due to the fact that the current participant actually pays a fee to the organizing committee workers in another project).
But the Laver Cup for the Australians is more likely an opportunity to participate in a beautiful experiment, but the ATP Cup is a project that is also important from the point of view of the global goals of Tennis Australia. The men’s team tournament instead of the obsolete Hopman Cup was first held in January 2020 on the eve of the Australian Open, and a new season began with it. The Australians united their three tennis centers (Perth, Brisbane and Sydney, but Melbourne was not involved – he already has a major), they even found € 30 million for the Sydney complex – they renewed the central court, completed the roof, and this arena hosted the final.
Tennis Australia is constantly told: their time is just January, in the off-season and the first month of the new year, the organization tries to make tennis the main topic for the whole country. One of the organization’s goals is to attract top players before the Grand Slam itself. In the men’s part, it has already turned out: now the ATP Cup is definitely the main point of attraction, although several years ago the stars willingly went to Doha (the 2020 tournament was won there by Andrei Rublev, who did not have enough place in the base at the ATP Cup, he was the second seeded in Qatar ).
Craig Tiley explained in The First Serve podcast that his goal of organizing tennis is to win over attention from other sports that can be watched live on a regular basis. The ATP Cup fits perfectly into this concept. And the global goal is to simultaneously represent to the audience the city’s tennis clubs, where people could play themselves, find coaches and sparring partners.
The Premier ATP Cup definitely turned out, right after they started talking more specifically about the women’s version (while the women only suffered: in Brisbane, the ATP Cup overlapped on the WTA tournament, and all women’s matches were sent to secondary courts, the central one was completely given to men – Maria also complained Sharapova).Tennis Australia executives are confirmed to be in discussion with WTA bosses, nothing specific has yet been announced for January 2021.
5) Tennis Australia is very sensitive with the audience. Recently, the Salesforce Social Studio monitoring system was introduced for the Australian Open – it collects all the reactions of people (from letters through the feedback form to posts on social networks). Each can be tracked, turned into a task for the relevant department, sent to a store of ideas for improvements, and so on.
“We collect all opinions in general, and it really opens our eyes. It turns out that the first thing people want is not what we thought was a priority, ”admits Tennis Australia Marketing Director Josie Brown. “It’s my idea to take people’s feedback, their disappointments and indications that something is not working as a basis.”
At the same time, the Australian Open strives to expand beyond the borders of the country and become the main event of the entire Asia-Pacific region. And this is a multi-level approach: for example, top Asian restaurants are invited to Melbourne Park, wild-cards are played in the main draw in a separate regional mini-tournament (for example, Uzbekistani Denis Istomin participates in it), and Tennis Australia launches joint programs with Asian national federations.
***
A couple of Tennis Australia key principles that help grow business without compromising authenticity and longtime fans: on the one hand, there are many people in the top management team without a tennis background (for example, tournament president Jane Hrdlichka previously worked at Ernst & Young and a couple of airlines , and Josie Brown came from the agency, where she also hosted Procter and Gamble), on the other hand, they constantly work in project teams with employees who know everything about traditions and the core of the audience.
“I understand and appreciate the role of the agencies that work with us, I trust them and I will never remind myself and my requirements every five minutes,” explains Josie Brown. “Moreover, it is important for us to work for a wide audience, to build our marketing around understandable things – what is available to everyone”.
Tennis Australia has a complete order and a planning horizon: top managers always think three years ahead and are already substantively discussing how the Australian Open-2023 should look like.According to employees, this helps to focus on global goals, and no one will lose sight of current issues.
“We really appreciate that our goals are the same: as Tennis Australia, we strive to involve young people, children in tennis, at the same time they become, if not players, then at least regular spectators,” says Craig Tiley. – It seems that talking about working with the new generation is very old-fashioned, but it is not at all true. This is where the key to a future loyal audience is.It is important to realize that only such long-term work can give permanent results. Interim measures are short-term successes, nothing more. So, if you are doing something that will be relevant for a short time, stop and switch to something more important and valuable. ”

90,000 The Russian national team lost to Canada at the junior world championship. What the team lacked
Junior hockey is beautiful in all its forms. Here you will not surprise anyone with comebacks. The Russian national team bounced back from 1: 5 in the opening match against the US national team and won 7: 6 in overtime, and the next day allowed the Finns to play two goals in the last minutes. In the semifinals, Suomi almost lost the match again, but they did not completely lose the advantage of three goals. Sometimes any youth team will envy the scenarios of juniors.
At YChM much more can be solved by individual skill. If a team has a prodigy like Matvey Michkov, that gives them a serious advantage. At this age, the difference in the level of players is especially noticeable: the guys playing on the same level with the youth team, with their eyes closed, beat those who are just good in their category.Solo passes through the entire defense, lacrosse goals, shots that goalkeepers are unable to react to, 12 goals per tournament performed by one person – all this is also the norm here.

KHL
Fedorov has his first coaching season in his life. CSKA will reach the KG?
Defeats are another integral part. Emotions of 17-year-olds are constantly going through the roof, which can play one way or the other. The strong Finns, after being defeated in the semifinals from Russia, sailed away in the game for bronze against the Swedes, who had previously flown into Canada twice with a total score of 2:20. And the gold home YChM-2019 Tre Krunur started with a 1: 6 defeat from the USA. Russia at all ages usually suffers from the Czech burden, and this time it was 11: 1.
And also the junior world championship is the fiefdom of the Americans. For many years, they collected junior teams not on the eve of the YCCHM, but before the season, applying for local youth tournaments.By the spring, they received a well-matched team, where coaches do not need to look for optimal combinations. The result is 10 championship titles, the closest pursuers are the Finns and now the Canadians with four victories. And they certainly had to fight for gold now in Texas. But the crumpled preparation and the absence of several leaders led to the fact that the “Stars and Stripes” not only did not become champions – they were generally left without medals for the first time in 17 years.
Americans love this tournament, but Canadians don’t.Usually, the playoffs of the CHL, the Canadian youth league, take place at this time. Unlike the MFM, they do not pause here, bringing not the most powerful line-up to the YChM. It turns out about the same situation as in the adult World Cup. Potential juniors “maple” watch in the summer at the Glinka / Gretzky Cup – they rate this tournament above the rest, and that’s where they are rarely fought. But here, too, the covid made adjustments: Glinka / Gretzky was canceled, in the Canadian youth team only Quebec started the season on time, and the Ontario League never left the holidays – they were allowed to play there only without power tricks, which is unthinkable for Canada.Canada brought the best guys to Texas, hungry to play and to win, led by another nekstvan Connor Bedard.
Therefore, the final Russia – Canada, not typical for a junior, was quite expected this time. Two cool balanced compositions, where the confrontation of two 17 numbers, Michkov and Bedard, is just the icing on the cake. After all, behind them were Svechkov and Miroshnichenko, Chibrikov and Yurov, Wright and Pinelli, Stankoven and Gunther. In the first period, the players on both sides showed that they had already become professionals. So great were the throws on nines from any position. 2: 2 in 20 minutes, and even Bedard’s unbeaten bullet – the final was a success. And even after Brennan Othman’s puck in the second period, there was no particular sadness – Russia immediately ran to recoup, tapping the entire frame of Benjamin Gaudreau’s goal. And Sergei Ivanov did not lag behind, dragging Otman’s gorgeous moment, when he was throwing from under him.
The poster of the final did not surprise anyone, but the teams went to it in different ways. Canada did not have a single combat match – they were all won on the same skate. And I was lucky with the group. Their main problems, if I may say so, were Latvia – 4: 2, and Belarus – 5: 2.
Russia easily had only two games – with Germany and the Czech Republic. They made me nervous even in the quarterfinals with the Belarusians, giving the opponent the second period. By the end, there was little gasoline left. Moreover, the rest before the final was four hours less. With this alignment, by the third period, you need to score in order to play defensively. Instead, Russia was two goals behind – Stankoven’s goal shortly before the break became a key one.I had to constantly run forward, climb on a penny, which the oversized Canadians rarely allowed. We played a lot in the majority, but realized only one in the third period.

And even though the 4: 3 score in the last minutes allowed to fight, the final assault did not work. The guys were exhausted. Such a cool ending, where something epic was bound to happen in the ending, turned into a banal goal in an empty net.
Russia has the second consecutive junior silver after 2019. Not bad after the hunger strike from 2012 to 2016. Another cool generation has grown up with several top players. Who, if they do everything right, will still fight with Canada, and not only with her. In terms of having talent, you can be calm. But so far, the last World Cup gold in all ages still dates back to the distant 2014. But this is already annoying. The taste of silver and bronze is not just boring – it is already sick of it.

Games of the III Olympiad in St. Louis
III Summer Olympic Games were held in St. Louis from July 1 to November 23, 1904. The Games, like the previous competitions in Paris, were timed to coincide with the World Exhibition.According to Coubertin’s idea, after Greece and France, the Olympics are best held in the United States. Five cities were considered as candidates: Buffalo, New York, St. Louis, Philadelphia and Chicago.
Chicago was preferred. But soon the Olympic Committee was faced with an unexpected problem. Chicago has a competitor – the small port city of St. Louis, which planned to host the World’s Fair this summer, dedicated to Louisiana’s entry into the United States. This exhibition was to host a major athletics event, and well-funded organizers were set to outshine the Olympic Games.
Later, the organizers realized that this was a mistake: the sporting events got lost among the other events of the exhibition and were again very extended in time.
Compared to the 1900 Games, the St. Louis Olympics were much more modest: many athletes from Europe, Asia and Australia could not fly across the ocean due to the high cost of tickets. Among the countries not represented at the Olympics were: Russia, Argentina, Belgium, Bohemia, Denmark, India, Spain, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Sweden. The only country to visit for the first time was South Africa.
A total of 651 participants took part in the Games, including 6 women, from 12 countries (of which only 53 people were not from America – representatives of England, Hungary, Germany and Greece). Americans made up 523 of the total number of athletes, and in more than half of the competitions, medals were contested exclusively between them.
Participants competed for 94 sets of medals in 18 sports.
The United States won a total of 238 medals thanks to its significant numerical superiority, the largest achievement in Olympic history.
Not without controversy. The United States has been criticized for the fact that several European immigrants who did not yet have citizenship were in favor of this country. Norway most recently, in 2012, called on the IOC to officially change the citizenship of two gold medal wrestlers.
The program of the III Summer Games included: rowing, boxing, wrestling, cycling, golf, lacrosse, athletics, tug-of-war, swimming, diving, rocky, artistic gymnastics, archery, tennis, fencing, football, weightlifting and fight. The latter two sports returned to the Olympics after a break, with boxing, lacrosse, diving and rocky competitions taking place for the first time. But Basque pelota, cricket, croquet, sailing, polo and shooting were excluded from the program. Demonstration sports were presented for the first time – demonstration performances were held in basketball and water polo.
- Opening ceremony of the III Olympic Games
Unlike the previous Games, the official opening ceremony took place at these Games, albeit timed to coincide with the opening of the Exhibition. It took place on July 1. In the central square of St. Louis, in warm and sunny weather, in the presence of three thousand spectators and various officials, David Francis, who served as director of the World’s Fair, gave a speech in which he declared the “III Olympic Games open.”
There was no closing ceremony, and therefore the last day of the Games is November 23, when the last sporting event was held (a football match between two American teams).
Modern Olympic Games usually last just over two weeks, but the 1904 Games lasted 146 grueling days. While most of the track and field events took place from August 29 to September 3, the rest of the events spanned several months at the World Expo. As part of the Olympics, a military sports carnival, an Irish sports festival and even the YMCA basketball championship were held.
Another innovation at this Olympics was that, for the first time, awards were given to the three best athletes in each of the disciplines: gold, silver and bronze medals.
Gold and silver medal of the III Olympiad
The first place in the unofficial classification was taken by athletes from the USA.They have won 78 gold medals (and 238 in total). Athletes from Germany, Cuba and Canada won four gold medals each. The teams from Great Britain and France showed their worst results at this Olympiad.
Rowing at the 1904 Summer Olympics
All rowing competitions were held on July 30th. Compared to the previous Games, there were changes in the program – twos and fours competed without helmsmen, and for the first time paired twos competed.
Only 44 people took part in the competition. Each class involved two to four teams.
All medals were won by American rowers, except for the silver in the eights for the Canadian crew.
Boxing at the 1904 Summer Olympics
Boxing competitions were first held at the Olympic Games, and these competitions were held on September 21 and 22. Only 18 American boxers participated. Disciplines varied in weight categories, but this rule was not always followed, and many participated in several tournaments at once.Charles Meyer, Harry Spanger and George Finnigan were able to simultaneously win one gold and one silver medal, and Oliver Kirk became the only two-time champion in the history of the Games in one Olympics.
Women entered the ring as part of a boxing competition, but their bouts were not counted. Only 108 years later, at the 2012 Olympics, women’s boxing was included in official competitions.
Wrestling at the 1904 Summer Olympics
Wrestling competitions were held on October 14 and 15.Only American wrestlers participated, who competed in freestyle (and not Greco-Roman, as before) in seven weight classes first introduced in this sport. As in boxing competitions, some athletes participated in several tournaments at once.

Golf at the 1904 Summer Olympics
The golf competition was held for the second (and last) time at the Olympic Games.Women, in comparison with past competitions, lost the right to participate in competitions, but instead a tournament was held among men’s teams.
Competitions were held from 17 to 24 September.
The team tournament took place first. Athletes from three American teams, who were representatives of various golf enthusiasts’ organizations, competed individually, and then their results were added. The best was the team of the Western Golf Association.
There were 74 athletes in singles – three from Canada and the rest from the United States. After qualifying, in which 32 best golfers were selected, the playoffs were arranged. The athletes also competed for the first time in the team running 4 miles, triathlon and throwing weight at 56 pounds (25 kg), but these competitions were soon canceled. Most of the medals (68 out of 74) were won by US athletes, missing out on only two types of medals in each category.
The sprint program did not differ from previous Games, and seven races were held in it. Archie Hahn and Harry Hillman won three races each, while Frederick Skule was the best in the 110m hurdles.
In the jumping disciplines, everything went unchanged, and seven sets of awards were played. Mayer Prinstein defended his triple jump title and also won the long jump competition.Rei Yuri again became a three-time champion of the Games in three standing jumps.
There was one additional competition in throwing – throwing 56 lbs. It was won by Canadian Etienne DeMarto. In the hammer throw, John Flanagan defended his champion title, and in the shot put and discus throw, Ralph Rose and Martin Sheridan received their first titles, respectively.
The all-around was first held at the Olympic Games, and included two disciplines – decathlon and triathlon. Decathlon at the Games was somewhat different from the modern one – instead of a disc, they threw a hammer, instead of a spear, a weight of 56 pounds, and instead of running 400 m, they walked 880 m.Briton Tom Keely became the winner, while Americans Adam Gunn and Thruxton Hare took second and third positions.

“Anthropological days” were organized at the Games for third world athletes
Along with the traditional competition at the 1904 Games, there was a highly controversial event known as the Anthropological Days. For two days, the so-called “uncivilized tribes” tried their hand at Olympic sports. The Ainu, Patagonian, Pygmies, Filipinos and Indians competed in traditional Olympic sports such as archery, long jump and javelin throw, as well as specially prepared competitions such as muddling. The event was presented as a manifestation of the natural athletic ability of the participants. Most of the competition was very low, and anthropological days organizer James Sullivan smugly concluded that the competition had proven the savages’ inability to sport. With this, the organizers of the III Olympiad of 1904 dealt a serious blow to the very principle of the Olympic movement. These “days” became a black spot for the Olympic Games. Pierre de Coubertin sharply opposed the racist antics and made sure that this never happened again at the Olympic Games.
The III Olympic Games in St. Louis in terms of their scale, program and number of participants were significantly inferior to the 1900 Olympics in Paris. The population of the city and the numerous tourists who flooded this southern city showed almost no interest in the competitions: more than two thousand people never attended the largest and most intense competitions. An attempt to combine the Olympic Games and the World Exhibition failed again. In Europe, the III Olympics went almost unnoticed.
