The middie/ attack lacrosse sticks are shorter to allow the player to have full control over the stick in the field. The short length makes it easy to pick the groundballs. It also improves ball security. Middie and attack sticks have the same properties. Both of them use the same stick, known as a shortie. It is short to provide the optimal control but long enough to have the power to shoot better.
The shaft is basically lighter as well that allows the players to show agility while moving. The attacking lacrosse shafts mostly have the length of 30”. Usually, defense and the attack heads could be changed, but attackers find it convenient to have the head that has lighter weight along with the maximum scoop. Defensemen are allowed to have the total stick length between 52” to 72” and the shaft length 42” to 60”. The length of the pole should match the player’s height. For instance, if the player is 5 feet 8 inches, then the shaft length should be 58 inches and the head should measure 10 inches that makes the total of 68”.
For the youth player, the same rules are applied but the stick length varies; the allowed combined length is between 37” to 72” and the shaft length is 26” to 60”.
Middie
For the adult midfielders, the shaft length of 30” is allowed with the head length of 10”-12”; that makes the total stick length of 40”-42”. On the other hand, for the youth players, the shaft could be cut short to 26” minimum. The allowed combined length varies from 36” to 42”.
Goalie Stick Length
When the head isn’t involved, the perfect considered shaft length is 40 inches and the combined stick length ranges between 40” and 72”. For the youth, the stick length can vary between 37” to 72”.
Things to Look When Choosing Lacrosse Sticks
Choosing the right stick can totally alter the end results of your game. The right selection can create a win-win situation when it comes to the hands of an elite player. The wrong choice, especially for the first time, can totally alter the game perception of the new player. There are many things to consider when choosing a lacrosse stick.
How to Select the Right Shaft?
The shaft may simply look like a stick to hold the head but it has a great diversity as well when it comes to selecting the right one. The shaft provides power, control, and accuracy.
When the shaft is heavier, it will become bulky and slow the player down. On the other hand, lighter shaft improves agility and reaction time. The expensive shafts are usually stronger but very light in weight.
The weight depends on the length of the shaft and the material used in the construction. Carbon components and metal alloys are used usually because they are strong yet light weighted and don’t hinder the performance.
The most common shafts are made using any of the following materials:
- Aluminum Alloy: Aluminum-based alloys are strong and don’t have much weight. They are affordable and versatile. As they don’t have a natural grip, sticks made from aluminum have added grip pattern to enhance control. Considered ideal for young players, the strength is not as good as other advanced materials.
- Composite: The whole carbon construction gives great strength with lighter weight. This material offers a solid natural grip for enhances control. When the temperature is high, it feels cool, and when it is low, it feels hot; this makes it an efficient material to select. Attackers mainly prefer composite sticks and it is usually the choice of intermediate and above players.
- Titanium: A sturdy, tough, yet very lightweight material to construct a shaft. The strength is flawless and can be used to enjoy some great hits. Advanced players go for it as they are a bit expensive but the construction is flawless.
- Scandium: Another famous but very light-weighted material that has the unmatchable strength and durability is scandium. It is the one-time investment in the game as it lasts really long. The ideal weight makes the movements very easy. Because of the high-quality manufacturing, it is the love of many pro-level and elite players.
No matter which material you select, it is always the personal choice of the player. The construction of one shaft is different from others and has a built-in grip and texture. The topmost thing to consider is to go for the shaft that feels great in your hands.
How to Select the Right Head?
The shaft’s construction will produce no results if the head is not right. There is a great variation in the lacrosse head. Heads are available in diverse designs, shapes, and sizes but the functions remain the same. The head should meet all the demands of the game and provide enhanced ball handling, accuracy, and shot speed.
Selecting the right head is essential for the game. The player must select the head according to the playing position. Even for the same playing position, features of the head can vary greatly as it depends on the player’s personal choice as well. Scoop
It is the topmost part of the head that touches the ball and pulls it off the ground. It is also the place where the ball is passed or thrown. The dip in the center of the scoop is known as ‘drop’. The measurement of the scoop is done in drop and width. Scoop with maximum drop offers ideal accuracy; on the other hand, the flat scoop is good to pick the ball off the ground.
Sidewalls
The sidewalls of the head can be hard or flexible but their aim is to provide strength to the head. It shapes the head and holds the pocket. Stiff heads are the choice of the defensive players because they deliver the ball hard – they are heavier in weight as well. On the contrary, flexible sidewalls don’t weigh much and offer fast movement. They are also great at picking up the ground balls. Their height impacts the pass accuracy and shots greatly; they can be mid, low, and high and determine the depth of the pocket.
It is the place of the head that keeps the ball. The pocket comes in two ways; either it is strung by the company and called complete or it is unstrung. Mainly, the veteran players want to go for the later one as they want to customize it using their experience. On the contrary, the company completed heads are recommended for the players who don’t know the game very well or considered intermediate players.
Narrow pockets are great when accuracy is needed along with the best ball retention as they make blocking harder but throwing and passing become hassle-free. Wide pockets are the choice of defensive players and newbies as they are not too accurate and make it harder to hold the ball. Also, the wider area allows blocking passes and shots very quickly.
Offset
As compared with the midline of the handle, the offset is the lowered sidewall that keeps the scoop behind the handle line. Offset function is to enhance ball retention and cradling.
Complete Stick or Customized Stick – Which One Is Better?
Both work great but the selection is mainly the matter of the personal choice and the level of the player. The head is detachable and can be customized with any shaft. You can either buy the shaft and head separately and then join them to play, or you can go for the complete stick that is assembled by the company.
The new players go for complete sticks because they are pocket friendly and offer great value and performance. There is no trouble to separately look for each item. However, on the other side, the elite and advanced players like to customize their stick and buy shaft and head separately. It costs a bit extra but their experience helps them to experiment correctly. They know what is best for their game, thus, they can make the right choice. For the new players, only the complete stick is recommended.

When Complete Sticks Make Sense
Most lacrosse players start out using a complete stick nowadays. There are many great lacrosse sticks for beginners to learn with including options from the top companies.
They are affordable and check all of the basic boxes for what you need in a lacrosse stick. You only have to make one purchase and the stick comes ready to use out of the box.
This is why complete lacrosse sticks are often a great choice for beginners and younger players who don’t yet require very advanced heads and shafts.

When Individual Heads & Shafts Make Sense
When people hear that lacrosse heads and shafts from different brands usually fit together for the first time, they are often shocked.
It’s true though.
You may have to drill a new hole in the shaft so you can screw the head in, but in most cases, that’s it.
As mentioned in the first section, I recommend advanced players choose individual heads and shafts.
Most lacrosse companies only offer a few complete sticks. So if you only shop for complete sticks, you’ll automatically be eliminating some of the best lacrosse heads and shafts on the market.
In addition, choosing an individual head and shaft allows you to choose ones that fit your style of play the best. For example, you may like very light lacrosse shafts and heads with a narrow pinch, but you may only be able to find a complete stick with a light shaft but wide head.
How to Choose the Best Lacrosse Stick for You
It can be difficult to choose a lacrosse stick with so many options available. Every time I bought a new stick in the past, I spent hours doing research—including trips to my local lacrosse shop—before finally settling on one.
To help you figure out how to decide what the best stick for yourself or your child is, I’ve highlighted some important things to consider below.
Age
Players around 8 and under may not be able to handle the weight and length of a full-sized stick. Luckily, there are smaller sticks (often labeled “Youth”) that have similar proportions and weight distributions as full-sized sticks.
For children that are a little older, there are many full-sized options that come with relatively wide heads that can make it easy to learn catching. These are sometimes labeled as “Junior” sticks.
Finally, older players may want to choose a stick with a more pinched head and stronger shaft. Once players are good enough at catching, narrower heads shouldn’t be much more difficult to catch with, but they offer better hold and more accurate passing. Stronger shafts may be necessary for higher levels of play since the checks are harder and other players have stronger shafts.
Position
There are 3 main stick types in lacrosse: attack/middie, defense, and goalie.
Attack/middie shafts are often simply called “attack shafts” and are 30 inches—the shortest shaft. Attack/middie heads are also narrower than defense heads.
Defense shafts, on the other hand, are the longest shaft at 60 inches long and may be called “d-poles”. These sticks are the longest because defensemen need to have more reach for checks. Many heads designed for defense are wider to give them more area for intercepting passes and throwing checks.
Finally, goalie shafts are usually around 40 inches and goalie heads are nothing like attack/middie and defense heads. Instead they are more circular and much larger.
Youth sticks are often shorter than standard attack shafts by around 1 to 4 inches. In addition, young players and beginners may want to stick with an attack shaft until they are comfortable with it before moving up to a defense shaft.
Skill level
Your skill level is a big determining factor in which lacrosse stick to buy—especially when it comes to the head on the stick.
Beginners are better suited with a wider head so they can have more leeway with catching the ball. Advanced players—especially attackmen and middies—often prefer narrower heads that have better hold and are more accurate.
When it comes to shafts, typically the lighter and stronger the better, no matter the skill level. There is really no downside of using an advanced shaft with a basic head other than the possibility of the stick being top heavy since most basic heads are a little heavier than advanced heads.
String job
The string job is an often-overlooked aspect of choosing a lacrosse stick. Even the best heads won’t be usable with an awful string job.
It’s especially important when buying complete sticks since most of them come with a factory-stung or pre-strung pocket. Historically, factory-strung pockets are very shallow and don’t have great “hold” (how well the head holds onto the ball).
When choosing a complete lacrosse stick, look for one with a decent pocket (for reference, the max depth allowed is a full lacrosse ball under the lowest part of plastic).
Either that or ask around your team to see if anyone knows how to string sticks or look up some YouTube tutorials to learn yourself.
Reviews
It’s important to read customer reviews for any product you buy—and lacrosse sticks are no exception.
Reading real customers’ experiences (as I’ve done to create this guide) is the only way to truly know how a stick holds up and performs. Sure you can read what the company selling the stick says about it, but most of that is marketing language. It’s not like they’re going to list out a bunch of a cons to the sticks they are trying to sell.
Check out reviews on Amazon, online lacrosse stores, review sites, and YouTube before making your decision.
Budget
Last but not least, your budget is a big factor in what stick makes the most sense for you.
If possible, you should factor in your entire lacrosse budget for the next year or two when choosing a stick.
I say this because sticks typically last at least a year, and buying a higher quality stick that you won’t have to replace for a few years is better than buying a cheap stick that is going to break after a few months.

I briefly went over the typical lacrosse shaft sizes above but wanted to go over the regulation stick sizes so you can make sure the stick you choose is legal.
The following table goes over the regulation lacrosse stick lengths including both the head and shaft. Note that most heads (excluding goalie heads) are right around 10 inches long, so the shaft is the biggest determining factor in whether your stick is a legal length.

How to Choose a Lacrosse Head
Having a hard time deciding what to look for in a lacrosse head? It’s definitely a difficult decision to make, but if you know what to look for, it’s not impossible.
Finding a head designed for your position is a great starting point. You can also narrow down your selection based on your budget. While many of the heads listed on this page are on the expensive side, we also have a cheap lacrosse heads guide that may be helpful if you are looking for a more affordable option.
From there, you really just have to figure out your preferences to find a head that matches them.
What kind of preferences am I talking about?
Let’s explore a little further. Here are 7 things to consider that can help you find the best lacrosse head for you.
1) Face Shape
The face shape of your head is what it looks like when looking at it straight on. If you’ve ever heard someone talk about how pinched (or wide) a head is, they’re talking about the face shape.
Deciding what kind of face shape you want is the easiest way to eliminate many options from your consideration.
Generally, wider heads are easier to catch with but have less control and accuracy. More pinched heads, on the other hand, hold onto the ball better and are more accurate, but are harder to catch with.
Here is what face shape each position typically looks for in a head:
- Attack: Pinched heads, especially towards the throat. Help with control when dodging and accuracy with passing and shooting.
- Midfield: Anywhere from a very narrow face shape to a wide face shape. Middies use the widest range of heads since they are involved in all parts of the game. If you are an advanced player or play primarily offense, a more pinched head is a good choice. If you play a lot of D middie or are just starting out, consider a wider head.
- Defense: Wide heads that help with intercepting passes and have more surface area for laying checks. Some advanced defenders prefer narrow heads to help with control in transition.
- Long Stick Middie (LSM): Slightly more pinched heads than the average defenseman uses to help with control in transition and accuracy when passing and shooting.
- Faceoff: A pinched head that requires less movement in order to pinch or clamp the ball. The head can’t be so pinched that it regularly gets caught in the back of the throat, though.
2) Weight
Some players consider weight the most important factor when choosing heads while others don’t care as much. It really depends on how sensitive you are to changes in the weight distribution of your stick.
For example, I don’t mind a heavier head too much. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not running out onto the field with a metal head or anything like that—I just find that a slightly heavier head doesn’t noticeably affect my game.
Typically, offensive players prefer lighter heads that help them move and shoot faster since it requires less effort to move the head.
Defensive players, on the other hand, often opt for a heavier head that is stiffer and more durable than lighter options.
3) Stiffness & Durability
As hinted at above, stiffness and durability often have a direct relationship with the weight of the head.
Typically, as weight goes up, so does stiffness and durability. Heavier heads have more material, which in turn makes them stiffer and more durable.
I say “typically” because there are some companies using advanced plastics and other materials to increase stiffness while keeping weight consistent or even reducing it.
Throughout this guide and my position-specific head guides, you’ll see me reference stiffness-to-weight ratios. When all else is equal, finding the head with the highest stiffness-to-weight ratio—or the head with the highest stiffness and lightest weight—is the best option.
Defensemen especially should worry about finding a stiff and durable head since they are laying checks constantly throughout the game. Having a super flexible head lowers the impact of checks, making it harder to take the ball away.
As far as other positions go, most players prefer stiffer heads that won’t bend when scooping the ball and getting checked. The only exception is faceoff men who often need a flexible head for pinch and pops and other moves that require them to flex their heads.

4) Ideal Pocket Placement
Finding a head that is designed to have your preferred pocket placement is also very important, though it is often overlooked by players.
How do you tell where the ideal pocket placement is for a head?
The easiest way is by locating the maximum offset. This is where the bottom sidewall rail is the lowest on the head when looking at it from the side.
If that max offset is towards the throat of the head, for example, a low pocket would be ideal. Offsets closer to the scoop, alternatively, lend themselves to higher pockets.
Here is what each position typically prefers in terms of pocket placement:
- Attackmen: Typically prefer lower pockets that are good for one-handed cradling and smooth releases.
- Midfielders: Preferred pocket placement varies a lot based on the type of player. On the run shooters and outside shooters may prefer a higher pocket that gives them more whip and hold. Middies that dodge from X or carry the ball a lot may like lower pockets to help with one-handed cradling.
- Defensemen: Often go for a higher pocket that gives them a bit more whip and more control immediately after scooping a ground ball.
5) Scoop
If you’ve ever used a head with a poor scoop, you know how frustrating it can be.
Poor scoops make it hard to pick up ground balls, often slowing you down or causing you to miss the ball altogether.
The best scoops allow you to pick up balls from a variety of angles and almost always feel smooth when doing so.
Scoops that are more angled/curved when looking down your stick allow you to pick up balls at a higher angle in relation to the ground. If your scoop is more angled/curved, you won’t have to get the butt end of your shaft as low to the ground as you would if your scoop was completely flat.
This is especially important for defensemen and LSMs since it’s harder to get the shaft’s butt end close to the ground since it’s so long.
6) Stringing Holes
The more stringing holes a stick has, the more you can customize your pocket to fit your needs.
While most heads nowadays come with plenty of stringing holes, it’s important to check to make sure you’ll be able to string your ideal pocket based on the holes.
Besides the number of stringing holes, you’ll also want to make sure they are big enough for your stringing style. For example, if you like to loop your top string around the first diamond of mesh a few times, you’ll need a large top sidewall hole.
7) Strung vs. Unstrung
As you can tell above, you usually have the option of buying a strung or unstrung head.
In most cases, I recommend buying an unstrung head and either stringing it yourself or getting a friend to do it. This allows you to string your ideal pocket instead of being stuck with whatever the company selling the head decides to go with.
There are exceptions to this idea, though. Some companies—such as East Coast Dyes and StringKing—offer great prestrung pockets that you can customize based on your preferences.
Before going with a strung head, check to see if the company allows you to choose your preferred pocket style and read some customer reviews to see if they were satisfied with the string job that came with the head.

Lacrosse stick or Cross are used to play the sport of lacrosse. Players use a lacrosse stick to hold the ball and hit or “test” opponents’ sticks by making them throw the ball. The head of a lacrosse club is roughly triangular and stretched over a loose mesh that allows you to catch the ball, carry it (called baluster), pass it or throw it.

Wooden lacrosse stick is usually made from hickory wood. The lacrosse club is shaped by steam bending. Holes are drilled in the top of the head and sidewall ( i.e. on the side of the handle head) allowing the rope to be woven, which then hardens by immersing it in the resin. Leather “runners” are strung from the top of the “head” to the “throat” of the stick.Then nylon rope is woven into the pocket.

The wooden lacrosse stick dates back to the sport’s creation and is still made today by artisans all over the world. Although modern lacrosse sticks made of plastic have become the overwhelming choice for modern lacrosse players, traditional wooden lacrosse sticks are still widely used by boxing lacrosse goalkeepers, senior and veteran players, and women lacrosse fielders.Wooden sticks are still permitted under the Canadian Lacrosse Association and NCAA regulations, but are regulated the same size as modern lacrosse sticks. The only exception to this rule is the Western Lacrosse Association, which banned the use of wooden sticks by non-goalkeepers a few years ago. The last WLA player to use it was A.J. Smith of Coquitlam Adanacs, c. 2003–04 who was a grandfather.

In 1970, STX was granted its first patent (US Pat. No. 3,507,495) for a synthetic lacrosse stick.The modern lacrosse stick consists of a plastic molded head attached to a metal or composite rod. The head is strung on nylon or leather laces to form a pocket. Club dimensions (length, width, sidewall height and pocket depth) are governed by league rules such as the NCAA rules for varsity players or the FIL rules for international players.

In men’s lacrosse, the club head must be 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) wide at its widest in accordance with NCAA rules.The head of a goalkeeper’s stick is much larger and should be 10 to 12 inches wide by NCAA rules or 15 inches (38 cm) wide by FIL rules. The sides of the head should not be more than two inches (5 cm) high.
In the head pocket, the ball is carried and caught. It consists of an interlaced thread attached to the head. The popularity of traditional laces with leather threads intertwined with nylon has declined in favor of synthetic nets. The net is usually made of nylon and comes in a variety of diamond configurations that can affect the throwing and holding characteristics of the pocket.
A typical mesh pocket uses four main nylon cords to attach a piece of mesh to the head: an upper cord, two sidewalls, and a lower cord. The upper thread is often made of a slightly thicker thread to resist the abrasive forces that occur when the ball is scooped up. The sides are used to attach the individual mesh rhombuses to the holes in the sidewall on the sidewall of the head. Sidewalls have the greatest impact on pocket performance, as they determine pocket placement in the head, pocket channel density, and even pocket depth.The bottom string is used to fine tune the depth of the pocket and to prevent the ball from slipping through the bottom of the pocket.

In addition to the four cords used to attach a portion of the net, the shooting strings are woven into the diamonds of the net to help fine tune the characteristics of the pocket. They can be made from typical nylon rope or hockey-style lace.Shooting with strings is often straight, U- or V-shaped. They serve to increase the retention of the ball in the pocket, as well as to fine-tune the way the club is thrown. They can vary the tension on different parts of the pocket, helping to create a “slope” along which the ball will roll when it comes out of the pocket.
Beginning in the 2013 season, the NCAA adopted a rule that the strings for shooting are limited to an area within a 4-inch (10 cm) arc extending from the top of the plastic spoon.This essentially precludes the use of U- or V-strings for shooting, as they almost always intersect below the 4-inch (10 cm) line. The depth of the pocket is also regulated by the rule. When the ball is placed at its deepest point, the top of the ball must not be below the bottom of the sidewall.
Shaft
Modern handles, better known as “rods”, are made of hollow metal. They are usually octagonal rather than round to provide a better grip. Most are made from aluminum, titanium, scandium, or alloys, but some shafts are still made from other materials, including wood, plastic, or fiberglass.The open end of the hollow shaft should be covered with tape or a plug (commonly called the “butt” or “butt” of the stick), usually of rubber. The stick head is usually attached to the shaft with a screw to hold it in place.
Stick length is governed by NCAA regulations, which require men’s clubs (including the head) to be 40 to 42 inches (102 to 107 cm) long for hitters, 52 to 72 inches (132 to 183 cm) for defenders, and Length 40 to 72 inches (102 to 183 cm) for goalkeepers.Offensive players generally prefer their golf clubs to be as short as 40 inches or 102 cm in order to have the advantage of shorter clubs to protect against defensive checks. Conversely, defending players generally prefer their golf clubs to be as long as possible (72 inches or 183 cm) in order to have the longest coverage for the attacker.
In 2016, the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rules Committee updated the rules. There were questions about changing the circumference of the shaft.Shaft circumference cannot exceed 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm). To be clear, the added tape on the shaft should not overshoot the shaft circumference.

In women’s lacrosse, the club dimensions are similar, except the pocket depth is much shallower. NCAA rules state that the head of a woman’s stick can be seven to nine inches wide and must be strung traditionally, with a pocket formed by a mesh of leather laces.Nylon mesh, long allowed in men’s sticks, only recently allowed in women’s sticks; The goalkeeper’s head can be up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) wide and can be strung with a nylon net. The permissible depth of a ladies club pocket is determined by the following test: the top of the lacrosse ball placed in the pocket must remain above the top edge of the sidewall. Women’s golf clubs are available in lengths from 35.5 to 43.25 inches (90 to 110 cm).
