Goalkeepers at every level want to play with modern equipment. Every year, new materials are used for its manufacture, its design changes. All this allows goalkeepers to move faster from post to post, to better close the gate. At the same time, the form becomes lighter, and the goalkeepers themselves look larger.
Against the backdrop of all this, it seems strange that most NHL goalkeepers have been switching to the game with new clubs for a very long time. At least that’s how it has been so far.
Field players have been using composite sticks for a long time. Goalkeepers resisted for a long time and only now they are starting to play with them.
Nearly half of NHL goaltenders now use sticks made using the new technology.
Bauer is the leading manufacturer of composite goalie sticks. Over the past ten years, only a few goalkeepers have played them. Now their number has increased to 17. Composite goalkeeper sticks “CSM”, which the company started producing two years ago, are used by 12 people. Among those who switched to composite sticks this season are the Montreal Canadiens’ Carey Price and the Arizona Coyotes’ Mike Smith. It is believed that they are better than others in possession of a club.
“I think they started around ten years ago, but it’s always hard to switch to something new,” Price said.

Like most goaltenders, Price had a hard time letting go of traditional sticks made from wood, fiberglass and foam. A lot of it has to do with how the stick feels in your hand. Why did he still decide to switch to new tools? Price missed most of the season due to a knee injury.
While recovering, he skated alone, without a uniform, but with a fielder’s stick.
“I’m not kidding. I skated with a fielder’s stick for two months and got used to it being light,” says Price. I put my regular stick in my hand and it felt heavy compared to a field hockey stick and I figured it was the right time to change it.”
Injury played a role in the Florida Panthers’ Roberto Luongo switching to composite sticks at the end of the 2014-15 season. For 16 years he played with a wooden stick filled with foam. He had a broken shoulder bone. Having healed the injury, he decided to try a lighter club and came to the conclusion that his hand moved faster with it.
“The range of motion is wider,” Luongo said. “I got back into action a week early because of it and still use it.”
The difference in weight between composite and traditional clubs can range from 100 to 250 grams, depending on the model and manufacturer.
“It felt so easy to me,” says Toronto Maple Leafs main goaltender Frederik Andersen, who switched to the Bayer composite stick last season.
“The balance was different, but once I got used to it, everything was back to normal.” .I don’t know if I can go back to the old clubs.”

Attackers started using solid composite sticks in 2000 and it took them a while to fully switch to them. Goaltenders also need to get used to the fact that the puck bounces differently from a harder hook. Smith also notes that composite sticks of the same model are always the same. They are produced according to one template and each new club is no different from the previous one. And each new batch of wooden sticks had its own characteristics.
“Wood feels better in the hand,” Smith says. “It’s always like that in life. You use something for a long time, then you change it to something new and you have to get used to it. It’s the same with sticks. Composite sticks are hard, strong “They are good to play behind the net, to pass. It suits me. It’s very important that all my sticks are the same.
I don’t have to worry that the new stick will be different from the old one.”
Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward has been using a Bauer composite stick since 2007.
“It surprises me that other goaltenders didn’t switch to composite sticks earlier. It’s all down to personal preference,” says Ward. “Shortly after I started playing with them, I realized I couldn’t go back to the tree because of the difference in weight. Composite clubs are lighter and continue to drop in weight year after year.”

Ward was one of the first to adopt new technologies. He willingly put up with the problems of the first composite sticks. Manufacturers constantly improved the quality of the product and Ward took advantage of this.
“They used to break often and easily. Now they don’t,” said Ward. “I noticed that he plays with a short stick. So I cut mine off. And then the weight of the stick was reduced. I think I’m a lot better with the puck.
