As lacrosse teams’ interest in technology and performance increases
Back in July 2021, Catapult announced a partnership with Premier League Lacrosse (PLL) to collect player-specific data and optimize performance related to athlete health, workload management, and training regimens. During the announcement, PLL co-founder Paul Rabil said:
“We’ve seen the impact of Catapult on the world’s top athletes and their state-of-the-art technology offers us the tools to better understand performance trends, strengths and weaknesses, all of which help us perform at the highest level.” .
As the partnership progressed, Catapult and PLL determined that lacrosse players covered 20% more territory and recorded a 20% increase in distance for each speed effort during games won. In addition, long-stick linebackers recorded 2.5 times more effort for acceleration and distance, and linebackers recorded a 36% increase in high-intensity directional change effort during wins.

This understanding has led to a growing interest in technologies like the Catapult Vector across all levels of lacrosse. One team using this technology is the six-time NCAA National Champion, the Princeton Tigers men’s lacrosse team.
“Here at Princeton, we want to perform at the highest level and thus provide our athletes with the best resources to compete with anyone in the country. The Catapult is the foundation for achieving this goal,” said Mark Ellis, Tiger Associate Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Why are the Tigers interested in 1TP22T?
Ellis is leading the use of the technology in the NCAA Division 1 program and became interested in the technology after seeing its ease of use and getting recommendations from others in the industry.
“Our program chose Catapult because of its user-friendly dashboard as well as its great access to sports scientists… Another reason for our decision was the many recommendations from other colleagues in the world of sports performance and the many studies/evidence behind technology,” Ellis said.
But the peak of the assistant strength and conditioning coach’s interest was the technology’s ability to improve performance and provide additional chances of winning future national championships.
“Catapult has provided me and our coaching staff with daily data that allows us to build training sessions efficiently; and also to connect what our athletes do on the field with what they do in the gym. A prime example of this is the ability to split data before a lift session and have the freedom to adjust the program based on what type of day (player load – intensity) they had previously,” Ellis said.
“Catapult simply puts us first in performance decisions with the evidence to back it up. ”

How to improve productivity with technologies
After using Catapult Vector for some time, the program has received many benefits. So Ellis shared various use cases in and out of the field for teams looking to implement wearable technology.
Use Case #1 Performance Optimization
top speed,” Ellis said.
Measuring these metrics allows the program to “practice how they play” and ensure that players are training at the desired level.
“In addition to speed and explosiveness, workload on the players is very important to us as it ensures that we train at the optimum level every time we take the field.”
Use Case #2 Creating a Culture of Competition
“My student-athletes here at Princeton are very passionate about technology. Every day athletes get a PDF of the previous day of training so they can see how they are performing as well as how their teammates are doing,” Ellis said.
This sharing of Catapult data allows Ellis and student athletes to celebrate the successes and milestones achieved by each athlete on the team.
“The best thing about sharing information with our athletes is every time someone hits a new top speed during the year, we celebrate it,” Ellis explained.
As a result, the Tigers have “created an atmosphere in which we want to compete not only with our competitors, but also within our team, pushing each other to the next level. Speed is what we want, what we train and what we focus on every day.”
Use case #3 Prepare substitutes for the start
“It was important for us to ensure that each athlete was optimally prepared, as if it were a starting lineup. Athletes go in and out of the roster, so our ‘next person’ mentally is really true,” Ellis said.
By tracking the data and performance levels of beginners, Ellis can determine the level at which each student-athlete in the program must be in order to be competitive.
“Realizing that rookies may have more to worry about, but non-starters do a great job of maintaining the average positional load of players with what we call ‘extras’ here at Princeton… like shooting before or after practice, extra work guarantees, they say, we are all physically and mentally ready for any starting opportunity, ”said Ellis.
After outlining the use cases above, Ellis shared his thoughts on how he can use Catapult solutions over the years.
“This is just the beginning for us and we are very excited to work with Catapult in the future. Based on this year’s data, we can use it as a basis for our future seasons. Given the long summer break, we can effectively bring our athletes back to where we want and need to be, but this time with data and evidence.”

*NCAA: Expert Strategies for Player Profiling and Safe Return to Play in Field Sports
Player profiling is an important aspect of sports training and performance analysis that can optimize performance by developing targeted training programs and strategies based on strengths and weaknesses sides of individual athletes.
Physiological testing, biomechanical analysis and psychological assessments can be used in combination to create a comprehensive athlete profile.
Effective rehabilitation protocols help identify red flags associated with injury and provide guidance to players. By monitoring athletes through technology, coaches can identify risk factors for injury and support athletes who return to their favorite sports and perform at their best.
University of Notre Dame Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning Michel Truncali explains it all. Click here to find out more.
