Palm Beach County Sports Commission Awarded Elite Lacrosse Tournament in 2021

The Palm Beach County Sports Commission (PBCSC) has won the bid to host the inaugural Eye of the Hurricane, which is a national lacrosse tournament produced by Legendary Sports Group (LSG). The event will take place January 16-17 at Gardens North County District Park in Palm Beach Gardens.

The tournament will feature elite lacrosse clubs from across the country with over 80 teams expected to participate. The event is open to boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams, from fifth grade through high school, with more than 1,400 players and coaches and 3,800 spectators projected to attend. Over the two-day event, a coaches’ clinic will be held for local youth and high school lacrosse coaches.

The state-of-the-art Gardens North County District Park opened in summer 2019 on 82 acres of land in the immaculate and inviting city of Palm Beach Gardens. The site features 10 lighted Bermuda grass multipurpose fields and the award-winning Palm Beach Gardens Tennis & Pickleball Center, which contains 18 Har-Tru courts for tennis and 12 pickleball courts. The park is also home to three concession stands, one meeting room, a splash pad, a playground, a ninja fitness course and a fitness trail.

Battle of the Bay Rules 

Polo Field Rules:  To keep the Polo Grounds in top form, the City of San Francisco does not allow spectators to be in the field. Only players, coaches and tournament staff will be allowed on the field. All spectators will watch the game from outside the fence which runs around the perimeter of the Polo Grounds. We are planning to set up the fields so they run along the fence for optimal viewing. We will do everything possible to make sure spectators have a great experience watching the games. Coaches, please abide by the following:

• All team “camps” and tent set ups must be set up on the outside of the Polo field. No camps will be allowed on the actual field. 

• Teams are not allowed to warm up on the extra space of the Polo field. 

• Players and club coaches are only allowed on the field during their game time and 10 minutes before game time. Please escort your team back off the field immediately after your game.

* Thank you for your help to make sure we abide by the City of San Francisco’s strict usage rules. With your cooperation, we will be able to enjoy the wonderful space in beautiful Golden Gate Park. 

• We will also have recycle, compost, and landfill bins throughout the tournament venue. Please help us to stay green and keep the venue clean. Thank you! 

Basic Conduct Rules 

 There will be zero tolerance for racist, homophobic, sexist or derogatory language of any kind. This includes on the field, off the field, in the stands, players, coaches and spectator. If this type of language is heard, that person will be asked to leave the tournament immediately. Please make sure this tournament is a hate-free environment and enjoyed by everyone. 

There will be no fighting allowed at any time. If a player punches another player during a game, he will be ejected from the game and/or the tournament. Refs will brief the tournament director after the game. The director will then determine if the ejection is for that game only or the rest of the tournament. 

Sportsmanship: Verbal abuse of referees from players, coaches or spectators will not be tolerated. Flagrant violations may result in a team disqualification at the tournament director’s discretion. 

 All other rules will be called consistent to current CIF high school/ US Lacrosse Youth rules. 

Game Format

All players must wear goggles and mouth guards

Goalies must be in full protective equipment & goalie stick

Regulation Ball will be used

FIELD SET UP

8 Players will be on the field at a time per side (2A, 3M, 2D, 1G)

2 players must stay on the offensive half at all times, 3 players must stay on the defensive half at all times.

The modified field will utilize the soccer goalie box as endlines and the same width of the field- sidelines marked with cones (see field layout image)

There will be no arcs used- the crease will be set up with cones.

SCORING

The only draw will come at the start of each game

After a goal is scored, there is a “Free Clear” – the defending team takes possession of the ball, and cannot be defended until the ball cross the midline, on the possessing teams’ offensive half

NFHS and US Lacrosse rules will apply where not specifically noted otherwise.

GAME TIMES

22 min running games (3 minutes between games)

Overtime only in the Girls High School Championship Game.

PENALTIES

Two yellow cards for one player will result in that player sitting the remainder of current game but the player is eligible to play in the games following 

A red card will result in that player sitting the remainder of the current game and the head official, field official, and tournament director reviewing the player to determine the players status for the remainder of the tournament.

Eastern Shore Lacrosse 2027 captures Beach Blast championship

The Eastern Shore Lacrosse Club 2027 team coached by John Rishko and Ashley Diehl went undefeated 5-0 over two days to win the championship at the Beach Blast Lacrosse Tournament held at Cape Henlopen High School. The team comprises players entering sixth and seventh grades. 

“They were the biggest surprise of all the groups,” said Tournament Director Sue Murphy. “What I’m seeing is younger athletes who can really play the game. That speaks to feeder programs with solid coaching.”

The 2027 squad beat the Jets 13-4 and Dark Horse 16-5 June 25, then won three games June 26 over Cavalier Lax 8-7, Pride 15-6 and Integrity in the championship game 4-3.  The Eastern Shore 2025/26 team was 2-1-1 over two days of the tournament, but didn’t make the championship game. That group has two full squads of players that they alternated in games to give equal time to each lineup.   

The 2025/26 group was coached by Lindsey Underwood and Jack Frederick. Team members are Emily Bisaha, Lina Frederick, Korie Glenn, Hailey Hauf, Hadley Lewicki, Sophia Massaro, Bailey Maston, Melanie McKean, Savannah Montgomery, Erion Morgan, Amelia Payus, Maya Yngve, Skylar Steigerwalt, Hannah Zimmerman, Allaire Burton, Regan Best, Cara Willis, Claire Lopez, Shea Danahy, Emily Daddio, Madison Mark, Ava Ruggiero, Ava Yenovkian and Lily Bisaha.

Players of the Eastern Shore 2027 team are Emily Wells, Ally Diehl, Haley Gamuciello, Lelia Hughes, Atia Sabbagh, Mairaed Rishko, Sasha Robbins, Kemper Cox, Alexis Zolper, Daisy Mastriana, Sophia Anemone, Isabella Daniel, Amara Fruchtman, Angelina McCarthy, Jillian Leach, Brooke Moore, Blaire Moore, London Richardson, June Hale and Lexi Spiegel.  

There were 77 total teams at the Beach Blast, including 50 middle school and 27 high school teams.

Fallball is More Than a Trip to the Beach For Christopher Newport

What is one of the secrets to Christopher Newport’s success under coach Mikey Thompson?

A trip to the beach.

For the last four years, Christopher Newport has culminated its fall with the Annual Beach Lax Tournament, where they split into teams and play a round-robin at Virginia Beach, which is close to the CNU campus.

“I’m 100% sold that this has made us better,” says Thompson. “It is a great way to grow the game without needing equipment. It’s competitive, it’s fun, it’s a workout, it allows you to be creative, and it’s endless reps catching, throwing, finishing, and defending.”

The beach tournament has its roots in pickup. The guys on the team play as much small-sided pickup lacrosse as possible outside of practice. A group of seniors even came up with a system of tracking points for total games played and one; guys throw their sticks out in the middle to pick teams — getting experience playing with different teammates each time.

Thompson has even started something similar for kids in the Virginia Beach area as a way to make the game more accessible and fun.

Since Thompson has taken over at Christopher Newport, where he was previously on staff as an assistant, he’s led the Captains to a 51-23 record and their first NCAA Tournament win and a program-best record in 2018.

Now that can’t be attributed entirely to beach days, but the principles behind it are meaningful: The benefits of small-sided play. The freedom of playing outside practice. The camaraderie of involving multiple teammate into a competitive environment. And, of course, making it fun.

“I think it’s a good message not only for college teams, but for the sport altogether,” said Thompson.
