Lacrosse Goalie
After 20 years STX finally released version 2 of their iconic goalie head. They’ve stiffened the frame and added more sidewall stringing holes for better pockets. Overall, it is a stronger and more versatile head then its predecessor. Checkout my full STX Eclipse II review. The Ecplise 2 is a really the standard of lacrosse goalies heads right now. It’s perfect for youth and for pro’s.

If you want a head with more stiffness and durability than the Eclipse 2, I recommend the Nemesis 2.
Here’s my full review of the Warrior Nemesis 2 head. This is also a good head but a little smaller and heavier than the STX Eclipse 2. Warrior has recently come out with the Nemi 3 but I haven’t played with it yet.

Lacrosse Goalie
Lots of companies are putting out great goalie mesh these days but ECD is my favorite and the favorite of a lot professional goalies. Of all the mesh sizes I recommend 12 diamond. The larger diamonds ‘grip’ the ball better and provide less rebounds while making outlets easier. The semi-soft breaks in quickly and is great for absorbing rebounds.

Another great option is String King’s Grizzly Mesh. Also in 12 diamond with semi-hard and semi-soft options. The Grizzly mesh is the lightest mesh I’ve found and yet is also pretty damn durable. String King offers a 90-day guarentee so if breaks within 90 days they’ll send you another for free.

Lacrosse Goalie
One of the elite goalie gloves on the market right now.
Extremely solid thumb protection and a nice, comfortable fit. Seems to have best protection without compromising mobility. The STX Shield 500 are light weight and don’t have as much bulky padding as other gloves but I felt the protection to the hands was still sufficient. My full STX Shield 500 goalie glove review.

Built on a more traditional fit profile with some additional volume in the fingers and in the back of hand compared to other gloves. Also has solid thumb protection. Suede within the glove provides a really comfortable feel and nice grip. FLOWCOOL venting technology on the back of the hand increases airflow and allows heat to disperse quickly. SHARKGEL padding in tumb increases dexterity and mobility.

A solid option for female goaltenders as these come in smaller sizes to fit the smaller hands. Silicone gel printing on palm, thumb and forefinger for the goalie specific grip. Also a good youth glove due to smaller size and the black version doesn’t appear feminine at all.

Lacrosse Goalie
If you’re looking for the lightest shaft on the market, look no further than the String King Metal 2. It comes in a few weights but the attack version at 125 grams is one of the lightest. If you like the feeling of being quick check out this shaft. Full review of the String King Metal 2 shaft.

Lacrosse Goalie
I think the STX Shield 600 chest protector does a good job combining protection with mobility. The cardiac silhouette coverage floating chest plate offers additional heart protection (very important given the new 2021 chest pad rule). There’s also a stomach pad for optional, additional coverage. I still feel very mobile with this chest protector.

Great option from Warrior for chest protection. Meets NOCSAE standards. And although it appears bulky it actually fits very snugly and allows the goalie a good range of movement.

Lacrosse Goalie
The current standard of lacrosse helmets. The Cascade S is the latest and greatest in both looks and protection. Comes in tons of colors and styles. Be sure the fit is perfect because loose fitting helmets can contribute to concussion fairly easily.

While the S is the latest and greatest helmet, the Cascade R is also a solid option. It’s more than sufficent in protection and because there are newer models you’ll be able to find the R for a lot less money. but the R is more than sufficient and a lot cheaper. Features Seven Technology, a ground-breaking impact attenuation system to more effectively manage energy transfer from direct impact of shots. Also looks extra saucy.

Required throat guard which attaches to the helmet to protect the throat and neck from shots.
Cascade makes this model of throat piece in clear and smoke. You will need to drill holes in your helmet to install this throat guard.

Lacrosse Goalie
Given what’s at stake, may be my favorite piece of gear. I definitely recommend goalies use an ice hockey goalie style jock as it provides much more protection than the average jock. I’ve gotten hit square in the package with a normal cup and I wish I would have been wearing this style.

The other jock lacrosse goalies swear by is the Nutty Buddy. This jock disperses the force outwards (while other cups have the impact go inwards). The Nutty Buddy is not as bulky as other cups but still provides solid protection. For many goalies this cup is a gamechanger and gives the fealing of being protected. Lacrosse goalies’ legs can take a beating so for practice and even games for youths use these goalie pants for additional protection.

Lots of good options for cleats out there. But I recommend high tops as the additional material will give the ankle a little more protection in the event of a direct hit to that area.

There’s no easy way to say this. Getting hit in the shins sucks! It hurts and can ruin the enthusiasm and confidence of a young goalie. So until you’re not scared of the ball strap these on to avoid punishment. Any basic soccer shinguard will do. Required for female youth goalies.

The Lexi Shield attaches to the forhead of your helmet and helps prevent concussions by softening shots that hit you there. You can’t really notice you’re wearing it so it’s really a no-brainer to use during practice. I don’t think they’re game legal yet. Here’s a full Lexi Shield review.

Your son or daughter has decided to try lacrosse for the first time and that’s awesome! But, as a company of parents and coaches, we understand that suiting up your young player for the first day of practice can also be a daunting task.

Lacrosse requires a few specific pieces of equipment, which varies by both age and gender, and we’ve put together the following buying guide to help walk you through what you’ll need.
Girls Lacrosse Equipment Checklist
Stick
Lacrosse sticks are made out of composite, metal alloy, wood, nylon, plastic and any other synthetic material with a head attached at the end. Beginner lacrosse sticks range from $25 to $60 and are made by different brands such as STX, Under Armour, Warrior, and Brine. There is not much difference between beginner sticks, but just be sure to buy a girls’ lacrosse stick. A helpful hint for first-time shoppers is that girls’ sticks have pockets made from string and leather thongs, whereas boys’ sticks have mesh pockets. Goggles
Eyewear is made by numerous manufacturers. It is recommended your daughter tries on a few different pairs of goggles to see which one feels most comfortable. At Swax Lax Lacrosse, we do not require goggles until 3rd grade and above, but be sure to check with your lacrosse clinic or lacrosse program. We have lots of pairs to lend out, so no worries if you’d like to hold off purchasing them until you’re confident that your daughter is going to continue playing.
Mouthguard
At Swax Lax Lacrosse, we require mouthguards for 3rd grade and above, but again, be sure to check with your local lacrosse program on their requirements. There are companies that make customized mouthguards that are more durable and longer lasting than traditional mouthguards. However, traditional mouthguards bought at a sporting goods store and molded with hot water at home will also do the trick and are financially a better option for younger players.
Cleats/Turf Shoes
Many players choose to wear cleats on grass fields and regular sneakers or turf shoes on turf fields. Soccer cleats are acceptable; cleats do not have to be lacrosse specific. That said, most schools do not allow cleats inside since they could damage the gym floor.

Not mandatory, but some girls like to wear them all year round while others just wear them in the early months of the season because of the cold weather. It is recommended that gloves have some sort of grip so that players hands do not slide on the stick.
Shin Guards
Only required for goalies at the youth and high school level, not required for field players.
Bag
It’s recommended that players bring a bag (but not too large that they cannot carry their own gear) to all practices and games to store all their equipment.

Boys Lacrosse Equipment Checklist
Stick
Lacrosse sticks are made out of composite, metal alloy, wood, nylon, plastic and any other synthetic material. Beginner lacrosse sticks range from $35 to $50 and are made by a number of different brands. There is not much difference between beginner sticks, but just be sure to buy a boys’ lacrosse stick. A helpful hint for first-time shoppers is that boys’ sticks have mesh pockets, whereas girls’ sticks have pockets made from string and leather thongs. We offer first-time buying tips, including proper sizing, on our blog. No fiddlesticks/mini sticks.
Helmet
A required piece of equipment worn by field players and goalies. Due to the structure at our camps and clinics, helmets are not necessary or required until boys reach 3rd grade, but we recommend checking in with your local lacrosse program. It’s recommended to try on different helmets to see which one fits best. Fit is important. An improperly fitted helmet offers little protection. Goalies must have throat protectors attached to their helmets.
Mouthguard
At Swax Lax Lacrosse, we require mouthguards for 3rd grade and above, but be sure to check with your local lacrosse program on their requirements. There are companies that make customized mouthguards that are more durable and longer-lasting than traditional mouthguards. However, traditional mouthguards bought at a sporting goods store and molded with hot water at home will also do the trick and are financially a better option for younger players. Must be a visible color.
Cleats/Turf Shoes
Many players choose to wear cleats on grass or turf fields Soccer or football cleats are acceptable; cleats do not have to be lacrosse specific. That said, most schools do not allow cleats inside since they could damage the gym floor.
Gloves
A piece of equipment worn by all field players and goalies. At Swax Lax Lacrosse, we require them at 3rd grade and up, but check with your lacrosse program. The cutting or altering of gloves is not allowed. Try on different pairs to get correct sizing.
Pads
At Swax Lax Lacrosse, we require pads at the 3rd grade level and up, but check with your lacrosse program. There are different sets of pads required and/or recommended for all players, which can include the following:
- Shoulder pads: required for all players except the goalie
- Arm pads:
- Must cover elbows. Helps protect arms and upper body.
- Rib Pads: to help protect rib area, but not required
- Chest Protector: required for goalies
- Cup: highly recommended for all boys, but required for goalies
- Leg protection: goalies occasionally wear shin pads and padded lacrosse pants under shorts (usually younger players, under 6th grade or players working through an injury)

Disappointing Lacrosse Goalie Equipment And Design
Coach Jonathan Edwards comments on the disappointing gear available to lacrosse goalies. Goalies are left unprotected and their game suffers for it. In his latest video, Coach Edwards gives goalies tips on how to improve their performance and ramp up their game with just one easy step – get protected.

Introduction
Hey there. It’s Coach Edwards from LacrosseGoalieTips.com and LacrosseGoalieUniversity.com, and I got a couple of questions this week via email about equipment. I just wanted to touch on something. I’ve been really disappointed lately at what I’ve seen available for goalies when it comes to chest protectors and just overall equipment. If you’ve heard me talk for any length of time you’ll know that I’m a big proponent for protecting lacrosse goalies.
The Equipment Paradox For Goalies
I think lacrosse goalies are really confused. We’re not a player and we’re not protected like a goalie. This year when I was watching the world series, yes, I watch a little baseball, not a huge fan but when the world series is on you’ve gotta watch, right? But I always watch catchers, and it’s funny. Catchers to me have more protection on than most lacrosse goalies, more than all lacrosse goalies do, yet it’s a softer ball comparatively to a lacrosse ball, it is thrown about just as hard, or a lacrosse ball can be thrown faster typically. A catcher in baseball has more protection on them than a lacrosse goalie does, and this floors me. I don’t understand.
Baseball Catchers Get More Equipment Than Lacrosse Goalies
I watched a pitch thrown in like game 6, it was thrown in the dirt, and the catcher immediately goes into what I call “block mode.” They’re not trying to pick up the ball, they’re not trying to get their glove on it like we do in lacrosse. We try to pick it up nice and clean, we try to get the head of our stick around everything. But no, he goes into block mode, his hand kind of comes up and he ended up blocking it with his knee, which was only protected by a shin guard. Then he picks up the ball and he’s looking at second base to see if that guy is going to steal. A lacrosse goalie or the equivalent of a lacrosse goalie would have reached only their glove hand to the ball and probably would have missed it because the ball went by them.
Big Brands Aren’t Looking Out For Lacrosse Goalies Anymore
In terms of gear, this year I was looking at chest protectors and things like that and I’m just saddened by what’s going on with all the major brands of lacrosse equipment. The goalie needs more protection. A couple of years ago we had that protection but for some reason it’s going, people aren’t buying it so they’re just going to change their designs. But the thing is, I know that a protected goalie is going to be a better goalie in the cage. That’s why it shocks me to see a catcher in baseball who knows where the ball is supposed to be going, has more protection on.
Goalies Only Have One Hand To Make Saves With
Granted, a baseball player, a batter, can tip a ball that’s going to hit that catcher in the head or off the shoulder or what have you, but to me there’s no excuse why goalies shouldn’t have the same type of chest and shoulder protection that at least a catcher in baseball has. It just floors me. Goalies are confused by trying to stop every ball with that one hand, that top hand holding the head of their stick. They’re trying to catch everything. I know that goalies save percentages will go up if they’re better protected.
Be More Ugly In The Cage
Stop being pretty in the cage. Be a little bit more ugly. But also, for young parents, I recommended this twice last week to parents, they’re having a hard time getting a hold of lacrosse chest protectors. I said, “You know what? Forget it. Go out and go buy a baseball chest protector that fits your son or your daughter, because it will have the shoulder caps, it will be cut around the shoulder girdle to be able to throw.
Chest Protectors
I would argue that a lacrosse player doesn’t have nearly the dynamic throwing motion that a baseball catcher does. Yet that chest protector, they manage to have a much better fit. I also don’t like these chest protectors that are skin tight. They clip on but they’re almost more like neo-premie. They’re really secure to the chest. When it comes to Camodeo Cortus and all those threads for lacrosse goalies, I like to see some space, some padding, some ability where if the goalie gets their shoulders rounded before a ball impacts them, just enough that they can get that chest protector to lift off their chest, it’s going to be much better.
Parents Need To Get Their Goalies Protective Gear
Again, I looked at hockey goalies, baseball catchers, lacrosse goalies, and lacrosse goalies, I tell you man, we’re confused and it’s not going in the right direction. We need to have better protection for our goalies. So if you’re a parent looking for gear right now, my recommendation for a lot of young goalies is this. Go get a baseball catcher’s chest protecter, get on some baseball shin guards under your sweatpants, and you will be a better goalie.
Testing Whether You’re Protected Enough In The Cage
Here’s the test. If you’ve watched this far and you’re a high school or college goalie, and you’re still listening to me, one, congratulations, but two, do this test. This is how to know if you’re protected enough. Get in the cage today without your stick and have your buddies shoot on you from outside of 15 yards. Have them take all the shots low. Bouncing right at your feet or right at the top of the crease, and you have no stick.
What do you do? How confident are you in the cage? If you’re like most of my goalies, you would never do that because you think you’ve got to catch everything with your stick. I’m sorry, but from a goaltending perspective, that’s wrong. Your responsibility as a goalie is to put anything in front of the ball that’s going to stop it or otherwise direct it from not crossing goal line extended or from the goal line.
Stopping The Ball At All Costs
You’ve got to get something in front of it. If that’s your knee cap, are you going to do it? You may do it but are you going to hobble all day for the next three days? What’s the point? Get some protection on and you will be a better goalie. The cool thing is, if you put on shin guards and a chest protector that you feel confident in, and you had your buddies shoot on you from 15 yards out, you’d stop everything. You’d throw everything in front of it.
With The Right Protection You Will Become A Better Goalie
Go try out a hockey goalie upper body protector and hop in the lacrosse goal and stop some balls. You will have a blast, but you won’t know it unless you do it. Goalies say, “I’m hot!” or whatever, but what are you, a goalie? Or a goalie who is worried about temperature? Step it up, get the gear on. As I said right now I’m not really happy with the protection I see available on the market for lacrosse goalies and I steer people to baseball chest protectors. No one’s going to know, you’ve got it on under your jersey anyway, so just put it on and deal with it.
