Australian football, field hockey and other games you may love
Tired of football and hockey? Not interested in volleyball and basketball? Do you want exotic? The sports edition of BUSINESS Online talks about sports that are crazy popular in some countries, but are a curiosity for Russian fans.
AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL
Where is it popular? The whole green continent is literally going crazy for football. But we are not talking about the kind of football that Europeans consider to be the only right one, and Americans call “soccer”. In Australia at 19In the 1900s, they came up with their own football, which eventually turned into a national sport. Each of the six states of the country has from two to three professional clubs – 18 teams play in the current championship. The salary cap is 10 million Australian dollars (approximately 7 million US dollars).
On September 13, 90,000 fans of the game attended the quarter-final championship match between Richmond and North Melbourne, and the average attendance for Australian league matches is 32,840 spectators. At the cricket (23539), rugby (15438) and football (13048) these figures are more modest. The price of television rights is growing by leaps and bounds. In August of this year, the league signed a new 5-year contract with three TV channels for $2. 5 billion. Australian football is also willingly shown on many European channels, and in Russia it can be watched thanks to Eurosport. On October 3, don’t miss the Super Final between the Perth Eagles and the reigning champions, the Hawthorne Hawks.
Why is it popular? A very dynamic and spectator sport, with an abundance of hard power fighting that attracts the public. The match consists of four periods of 20 minutes each, and during this time the players run about 20 km (10-12 km in regular football). Stoppages are extremely rare, even after injuries to players. The whistle usually only follows if the ball has returned to the zone where the injured guy lies. Such judging virtually eliminates simulations. In Australian football, hits to the head and tackles are prohibited, but the number of power moves and tackles is usually off the charts.
Basic rules. 18 players each (in the application for match 22) play on an oval field measuring 188×155 m. With the ball in hand, you can take a maximum of 10 steps, after which you need to part with it or hit the ball on the ground. The task is to kick the ball into the small goal with your foot (6 points). For hitting a big goal or a goal with hands – 1 point. Passes to a partner can be made with a foot or by knocking the ball with a fist, and if the pass was given with a foot, and the player who received it fixed the ball with his hands, then this player gets the right to hit the goal without resistance.
An interesting fact. If the ball is out of bounds, the referee takes the throw-in with his back to the field and throws the ball over his head.
FIELD HOCKEY
Where is it popular? “There are, in fact, only two perversions: field hockey and ballet on ice,” Faina Ranevskaya once said. However, we have the right to disagree with her. This sport has a huge army of fans on several continents at once. Field hockey enjoys great spectator interest in Holland, Germany, England, Australia, South Africa, India, Pakistan and Malaysia.
Can you imagine anyone other than Lionel Messi being recognized as Athlete of the Year in Argentina? And that happened in 2010 when the world football star finished second in the poll, behind Luciana Aimar , considered by many to be the best field hockey player of all time. Aimar, who has a phenomenal technique, is called the Maradona of field hockey.
The legendary player himself, by the way, is a regular guest of the matches of the national team. In Holland, during the 2014 World Cup, the 15,000-seat football stadium in The Hague was resurfaced and each match of the hosts of the tournament was sold out. When the principal rivals India and Pakistan play in various tournaments, the stadium of any capacity fills up, and the broadcast audience is 50-55 million viewers.
By the way, in India, recently, before the start of each season, six clubs arrange a real auction where they fight for free agents. On September 17, two-time Olympic champion German Moritz Fürste “went under the hammer” to the team from the city of Bhubaneswar for 105 thousand dollars at a base price of 20 thousand. Each team must have 20 players, including no more than eight foreign players. The turnover is very big.
Let’s not forget that field hockey is an Olympic sport. The last two men’s tournaments were won by Germany, the women’s by Holland. In Russia, even the Ministry of Sports does not seem to remember the Olympic status of this sport. On the part of the fans, the attitude towards the game is also rather cool. Perhaps because many do not even know about the existence of field hockey.
There are only six teams in the Russian Championship, and Dynamo Kazan always wins. Kazan will play the next matches at their venue on October 3 and 4 — you can get acquainted with the new sport by visiting the Field Hockey Center. The game is also being developed in Elektrostal, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg. Kazan’s women’s team competes in the top league.
Why is it popular? This is how it happened historically. According to some sources, hockey (then it didn’t have the prefix “on grass”) was played even before our era, but the British are still considered the founders of the modern game, who introduced the game to all their colonies. In Canada, with its harsh climate, the summer sport gradually turned into ice hockey.
In modern field hockey, power wrestling is prohibited, but when strong opponents play, everything looks quite spectacular – high speeds, interesting combinations, curious set pieces. Otherwise, everything is like in football. It all depends on tactics. Having led in the score, you can roll the ball boringly in the center of the field, or you can continue to aggravate the game.
Basic rules. 11 players each play on a rectangular field with artificial turf measuring 91×55 m for two halves of 35 minutes or four halves of 17.5. You can only dribble with one, flat side of the stick. It is only allowed to score goals from a special radius – 14.63 m from the goal. All goals scored because of him are not counted. Any touch of the ball with the foot within the radius is punishable by a penalty corner, during which the goalkeeper and the players of the defending team line up on the goal line, and their opponents play the ball.
An interesting fact. The green card in field hockey is triangular, the yellow card is square, and the red card is round.
Girls of the day. Ellen and Eva are Dutch field hockey players
CRICKET
Where is he popular? South Asia is going crazy for cricket. The game is very popular in England, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. On March 29, the World Cup final in Melbourne gathered 93,000 spectators and ended with the victory of the Australians.
It’s hard to believe, but the Indian Premier League is one of the world’s top five leagues in terms of match attendance among all sports. According to official data, even baseball in the United States had fewer people on average (30,458) than cricket in India (31,750) last season. In this country, as well as in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, a game bat is the first toy of a child. Cricket is like a religion there and unites millions of people.
The rise of the Indian Pro League began in 2008 when it signed a 10-year, $1. 026 billion contract with Sony Entertainment Television. 20% of this money went to clubs, 8% to prize money and 72% to promotion of the league. They have become so popular that there are full houses in the stands, and the stars of the league receive 3-4 million dollars each. By the way, the captain of the Indian team , Mahendra Singh Dhoni , earned $31 million last season (27 on advertising contracts) and took 23rd place in the Forbes list of the richest athletes in the world.
Why is he popular? Cricket used to be a big success in poor countries because of its “budget” – to play it is enough to have a bat, a ball, a couple of primitive wooden structures called wickets, and some open space. As for professional sports, it used to be joked that cricket is more suited to the measured lifestyle of Indians than ever, because one match with breaks for sleep and food could last five days. Modern cricket is limited to three hours of time and this is a completely different game – dynamic and gambling. Players are forced to take risks, act more aggressively and this attracts spectators. This cricket format allows you to broadcast matches on television and talk about the possible return of the game to the Olympic program (cricket has only been at the Olympics so far – back in 19year 00).
Basic rules. Two teams of 11 people each take part in the game. Alternately, they attack (serve) and defend (beat off). At the same time, two players of the kicking team are in the middle of the playing field at a distance of 20 meters from each other. The batters must protect the wickets from being hit by the ball. If the kick is successful, then the kickers must change places until the ball is returned into play by the opponents. For each run (runs), the players receive points, however, if the opponents managed to return the ball and knock down the wicket during the change of places, then the player who did not manage to finish his run is eliminated from the game. They are also eliminated if the ball hits the wicket after serving or is immediately caught by one of the opposing players after the kick.
An interesting fact. If a player enters the field without the referee’s command and touches the ball, the ball immediately becomes dead and the batting team receives 5 runs.
LACROSSE
Where is it popular? Lacrosse is a cross between hockey and butterfly catching, invented by American Indians. Now this game is popular in Canada and the USA, which are united by the National Lacrosse League (NLL), in which nine clubs play. The average salary of players is about 20 thousand dollars, which, of course, is much less than in other overseas professional leagues. MVP of the last championship and the main star of the American League Paul Rabil from New York earns about 100 thousand.
The current champion is Edmonton, who defeated Toronto in the final. The most visited teams of the past season (the championship starts in January and ends in June) are Colorado (15,405 spectators on average), Buffalo (14,316) and Calgary (12,213). Attendance at U.S. college league playoffs is even higher.
Why is it popular? The game is loved for its dynamism. Players need not only to master the unusual stick, but also to be very hardy. Just like in ice hockey, lacrosse is a game of power combat. It is allowed to push the opponent with the shoulder or hip, as well as to block the player in possession of the ball. Therefore, the game turns out to be quite tough and you can’t do without protective helmets. If one of the teams is reluctant to attack, the referee can record a passive attack and give possession of the ball to the opponent. Given that the sport is very contact, there are always fights – how could it be without them in the hockey arenas of North America?
From time to time there is talk of including lacrosse in the Olympic family, but there are quite a few fans of the game on other continents. Lacrosse medals were played at the 1904 and 1908 Games, the demonstration of the sport took place at three more Olympics (1928, 1932, 1948), but that was all.
Basic rules. At the same time, there are ten players on the court, which often acts as a hockey rink, who, using a special stick called a stick, try to hit the opponent’s square goal (1.82 × 1.82 m) with a rubber ball. A net is attached to the top of the stick so that the player can catch and hold the ball in it. The goalkeeper has a larger “net” diameter and no one has the right to enter the goalkeeper’s area.
An interesting fact. In lacrosse, forwards play only in the opponent’s goal area, defenders only in the goal area, and midfielders can be located in any area and play as attackers or as defenders.
P. S. American football and baseball are not included in the material, since every sports fan has an idea about them – thousands of articles have already been written about these super-popular sports across the ocean and dozens of films have been shot.

Ivan Fedotov signed a contract with CSKA for 2 years after military service

Hey, civilians, meet grandfather Fedotov! Judging by insiders, the hero of the Silver Olympics in Beijing repaid his debt to the Motherland in full. And the media report even more information: according to some reports, immediately after demobilization, Ivan extended his contract with CSKA. He did what was required of him a year ago.
How was the goalkeeper service? And what are his future prospects?
The enlistment officers joked: “It won’t fit into the tank”
Fedotov’s “urgent” deadline – yesterday/today
On July 1, 2022, Fedotov was detained on suspicion of evading military service. The goalkeeper was caught at one of the arenas in St. Petersburg, where he was training, put in an unmarked car and taken to the military registration and enlistment office. According to eyewitnesses, 10 people were detained – two in masks and camouflage, eight in civilian clothes.
In the military registration and enlistment office, where Ivan was declared fit for service, the hockey player became ill. He was taken to the 1st Naval Clinical Hospital in St. Petersburg. In parallel with this, Fedotov’s lawyer filed a lawsuit against the decision of the draft board (it was alleged that the silver medalist of the Olympic Games had diseases), but on September 20 the application was withdrawn. And if we return to summer events, then on the night of July 3, the goalkeeper was taken out of the hospital.
On which of these dates Ivan became a conscript, no one reported. Until June 11, 2023. On this day, the coach of the Navy team, for which Fedotov played during the service, spoke about the future of the athlete: “We know that the demobilization will be in 21 days. When he was drafted into the army, then he ends his service. So Ivan will still have time to go through the summer training camp with the KHL club.”
It turns out that the hockey player trampled his year in boots yesterday – July 1. Or today, if the coach did not take July 11 into account in his calculations.

Year of Fedotov: became a senior sailor, missed a lacrosse goal from servicemen
First, the recruit was sent to his native St. Petersburg, then to Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk region. Rumors that the two-meter giant would be dragged to a submarine or to Novaya Zemlya were not confirmed: he became an ordinary sailor of the Russian Navy. And later he was transferred to Sertolovo, where he used to live and was registered.
Nothing is known about Fedotov’s service itself. Only photos of him in a vest appeared on the network. And with a stick on the ice and new teammates. At first, Ivan was allowed to conduct individual training to keep fit, and later he was asked to help goalkeepers prepare for tournaments among the military.
At the beginning of June 2023, the goalkeeper finally returned to action: the winner of the Gagarin Cup was announced for the championship of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation for the Navy team. The team line-up for the first match was leaked to the network, in which Ivan stood at number 1. In the “military rank” category, “senior sailor” was printed under his last name. It turns out that he changed his shoulder straps in the course of the “term”. And whether Ivan rose to the rank of foreman of the second article is still a mystery.
At the championship of the RF Armed Forces, Fedotov took second place. In the media, the first two matches of Ivan in the naval team aroused the greatest interest: in the course of the first, he made a cracker (and his partners scored 12 goals), in the course of the second against the Central Military District, he missed a lacrosse goal.
Ivan Fedotov, apparently, will continue his career at CSKA.

Sailor Fedotov will return to CSKA? Already officially?
The future of the goalkeeper was discussed all year. There were enough tales: that the CSKA owner who owns the rights to the goalkeeper will exchange him for SKA, and that Ivan will immediately explode in the NHL. And there was also information about July 1, 2023: on this day, CSKA was going to renew the contract that had expired a year ago.
The last option raised a lot of questions. Because it’s weird. Last May, Fedotov refused to renew his agreement with the Army Men and signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia, which drafted him, after which the Russian was suspected of buying a military ID and evading service. And although the red-blues deny the allegations against them, most fans still consider the club’s leaders to be involved in the case. But then again, there is no evidence.
And yet the extension of the contract happened. At least, according to Metaratings: according to the publication, Fedotov signed a new two-year contract with CSKA. This was done on July 1, 2023. It remains only to wait for official confirmation from the club.

Moving to Philadelphia – is that all?
“Pilots” were waiting for Fedotov. “Pilots” tried to keep the rights to the player. The Pilots froze the contract for the 2022/23 season and assured that it would be valid during the 2023/24 championship. But now the Flyers seem to have given up: on June 15, a Match TV source announced the club’s readiness to let the goalkeeper go to CSKA.
Negotiating process with “Philadelphia” is conducted by American agent JP Barry. The further fate of Fedotov overseas also depends on him. He can convince the Flyers of the unreasonableness of a momentary move (because a year in the army = a different form) and the introduction of Ivan into the free agency market.
