6. Venetian large-scale battles on the bridge
Violent games were not only in the ancient world. In the medieval Venetian Republic, something like fights between football fans was practiced. The people of Venice met regularly on one of the city’s many bridges, bringing with them sticks, staves, walking sticks, or any other non-lethal weapon.
The task was simple: knock out as many people from the other team as possible and preferably throw them off the bridge. During such competitions, people received not only scratches and sprains, but also broken teeth and eyes, broken bones; someone could even be sent to the next world.
Moreover, the Venetians revered this kind of entertainment and organized competitions between different parts of the city, and sometimes with visiting teams. King Henry III of France, who witnessed this spectacle, said that this entertainment is too small to be a real war, and too cruel to be just a game.
7. Roman chariot races were not so romantic
Chariot races in the Roman Empire were as popular as gladiator fights. If you have seen the movie “Ben-Hur” 1959 years old, I could see how cruel this sport is. And even there, he is toned down due to censorship and not to shock viewers.

8. The Minoans jumped over the backs of bulls
The Minoans lived in the Bronze Age on the island of Crete and worshiped bulls as deities. No wonder in ancient Greek mythology the minotaur – a man with a bull’s head – lived in this place.
To impress the crowd and compete with each other, the Minoans grabbed the bull by the horns, jumped and flew over him so as to land on the ground without touching his back. These competitions showed the skill and courage of the athlete. At the same time, the horns were not filed, and sometimes the bull could pick up a person on them, throw him under his feet and trample.
9. The Iroquois played large-scale lacrosse
Lacrosse is a sport played using a small rubber ball to be caught with a long-handled stick and thrown into the opponent’s goal. In ancient times, when Europeans did not yet think of sailing to the New World, the Iroquois played what later came out of lacrosse – tevaarafon.
And it was an epic game that modern sports don’t even come close to. Up to a thousand players participated in some matches. The rules were similar to lacrosse, but the shortest field was four football fields long, and the longest could stretch for several kilometers. The participants of the game honed their skills so much that they could throw the ball several hundred meters ahead, and other team members caught a fast-moving small object at great distances.
