Around 38,000 skiers and snowboarders from Germany were so seriously injured in the 2019/2020 season that they had to see a doctor. Blows to the head were recorded in every tenth case. In Germany, according to Lauren Vanat, a recognized Swiss expert on ski statistics, there are more than 16 million days of skiing and snowboarding every year, that is, from 2 to 3 million people actively involved in these types of outdoor activities.
Every tenth injury associated with skiing is a head injury. The TÜV Association advises all skiers to always wear a ski helmet. And when purchasing it, you should pay attention to the labeling. It can really save a life.
Around 38,000 skiers and snowboarders from Germany were so seriously injured in the 2019/2020 season that they had to see a doctor. Such statistics were provided to the experts by the German Ski Association. 11 percent of all these injuries occur in the head region. 20 percent were wholly or partly caused by collisions and bad turns. “We strongly recommend that you always go on the slopes with a ski helmet,” says Dr. Joachim Bühler. He is the managing director of the TÜV association. For now, wearing helmets is voluntary. Each adult skier, at his own discretion, wears it or does not use it.
However, studies have shown that the use of ski helmets significantly affects the severity of head injuries. “Ski helmets not only reduce the risk of concussions and skull fractures. They also protect against cut wounds,” says the expert.
How to choose a safe ski helmet?
Undoubtedly, everyone has their own preferences. However, experts advise paying attention to one important detail in the labeling. When choosing a helmet, consumers should pay special attention to safety. The GS mark – “Geprüfte Sicherheit” or “Safety Tested” – must be on the product label.
The GS mark, established by German law, guarantees the safety of products to the consumer. It indicates that the manufacturer or seller has tested the helmet. And that after the test it is certified by an independent research center. “The GS mark ensures that compliance with specific safety requirements has been verified in type tests,” Buhler says. The relevant requirements are set out in the EU Personal Protective Equipment Directive and in the relevant EU standard. In addition, additional checks are carried out as part of the GS test. For example, site visits, sampling or quality assurance checks on individual production batches.
By what criteria are ski helmets tested?
Before the certification mark is awarded, extensive testing is carried out based on the European standard EN 1077. All helmets in Europe must comply with this standard.
There are two types of helmets:
Class A helmets cover the ear area and provide slightly more mechanical protection;
A Class B helmet (with soft ear protection) usually covers a slightly smaller area, but provides better ventilation and greater comfort.
How is this checked?
Researchers subject the helmet to various stress tests in the lab. The drop test tests the helmet’s resistance to shock absorption. In the shell penetration test, how much the helmet protects the head from sharp objects. And the so-called take-off or roll-off test checks how well the helmet sits on the head in the event of a fall.
Before testing, the helmets are cooled or subjected to accelerated “aging” using UV radiation. In addition, TÜV checks that the chin rest and chin strap work. Other important little things are also checked: whether the most important parts of the head are protected and whether the wearer of the helmet has a good view. Last but not least, experts carefully study the helmet markings and operating instructions.
While adults are not required to wear ski helmets.
Austria makes it mandatory for children under the age of 15 to wear a helmet in most ski resorts. Minors are also required to wear a helmet in Italy. In Poland, Slovenia and Croatia, children and youth are also required to wear a helmet.
What should I look for when buying a ski helmet?
A ski helmet must fit perfectly, otherwise it will not be able to fully realize its protective effect. It should sit relatively tight, but not pushy. Only if the helmet doesn’t slip when you shake your head – even without a chin strap – does it provide the protection you need. Other criteria for choosing a helmet are weight, customization options and climate control, as well as its color.
The chin strap, chin strap and vent flap should be comfortable to use even when wearing gloves. If the buyer regularly wears a ski mask or sports sunglasses, it is worth bringing them with you when buying a helmet. This is the only way to check if they are compatible.
How long does a ski helmet last?
If the helmet has been hit hard, it should be replaced immediately. Because the internal structure of the material may be damaged. Otherwise, you will have to change the helmet every three to five years. The material “ages” relatively quickly. Because it is exposed to direct sunlight, as well as due to frequent use, cold, moisture, sweat.
Who did the peer review?
Ski helmets have been peer-reviewed by TÜV e. V. It represents the interests of its members in relations with politicians, administration, business and the general public. The association aims to ensure the technical and digital security of products.
