Plagiocephaly Helmets (Cranial Molding Helmets)
A misshapen or flattened head is referred to as plagiocephaly. Plagiocephaly can occur in the womb due to crowding, or as an infant from too much time spent in the same position, such as lying on their back. It is rarely caused by brain malformation or unilateral sutural synostosis. An increase in positional head deformities has been reported since supine sleeping (sleeping on one’s back) was recommended to reduce the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). When an infant’s rapidly growing head is maintained in a nearly fixed position against the uterine wall or the mattress, the skull is progressively flattened. Such deformational plagiocephaly generally will improve within a few months after birth, especially if a full range of neck movement can rapidly be achieved. If the plagiocephaly doesn’t improve a cranial molding helmet will most likely be recommended.
The goal of helmet therapy is to provide a safe environment for your baby’s head to grow into a more normal shape. The helmet does not pressure the head, but instead facilitates proper growth.
There is only a small window of opportunity to correct the infant’s skull. As the rate of skull growth is faster in the early ages, helmet therapy is most effective between the ages of 3 to 7 months. However, helmets are still effective until the infant is 12 months old.
Your Orthotist will spend a great deal of time taking a medical history and will ask you a series of questions about your child’s condition. We will then take cranial measurements to determine the asymmetry. An impression of the head shape is obtained by computerized 3D scanning technology to quickly and efficiently design the helmet from the scan of your baby’s head.
The average treatment will last 3-6 months depending on the age of infant and severity of the condition. Early diagnosis of deformational plagiocephaly will contribute to maximum correction. The helmet is worn 23 hours per day for successful remodeling of the head. Careful and frequent monitoring by your orthotist and physician is required.

2. For the first several days, your baby may perspire excessively until his or her body becomes accustomed to the Cranial Remodeling STARband. This is normal, and during this time, the STARband can be removed for a couple minutes throughout the day to dry the baby’s head and band with a towel or cool hair dryer. The STARband should be reapplied as soon as the baby’s hair and the band are dry. Do not use powders, lotions, or wipes on the baby’s head or inside the STARband. These products may contain perfumes and ingredients that can lead to skin irritation. Dress your baby in cooler clothing if the baby perspires excessively.
3. If the baby develops a rash, consult your Doctor immediately. Also, keep the baby as cool as possible, and towel or blow dry the baby’s hair and the inside of the band throughout the day with a cool hair dryer to prevent moisture buildup. Replace the STARband as soon as the band and hair are dry. Time out of the band should be less than 10 minutes.
4. If you need to cut your baby’s hair during STARband® Cranial Orthosis treatment, do not shave the entire head. The contact of the band against the head may cause irritation when the hair starts to grow back in and the baby may develop skin irritation. Try to keep your baby’s hair the same length throughout treatment to prevent fitting problems that may result from a decrease or increase in the amount of hair.
5. Skin checks should be performed every time the STARband is removed. Call your practitioner immediately if there is an area of deep redness that does not fade in one hour after removing the band. This may indicate a need for an adjustment. If there is any skin breakdown, remove the band and contact your Doctor. The STARband should not be worn until the skin is healed.
6. Excessive time out of the STARband (more than 48 hours) may create problems with the fit of the STARband since the baby’s head is growing continuously. Limit the time out of the STARband, and seek assistance when something prevents your baby from tolerating or wearing the band.
7. Each time you place the STARband on the baby’s head, check the chafe, strap, and stop gap foam insert to make sure they are secure. Loose parts can be a choking hazard and can result in asphyxiation if the parts are swallowed.
8. When the STARband is off your baby’s head, keep the STARband away from family pets. Dogs have been known to chew the plastic and foam liner.
9. The STARband must be worn as prescribed, 23 hours a day, to constrain further abnormal growth and encourage growth in the correct locations. Even at the end of treatment, the band should be worn 23 hours a day until the physician, practitioner and caregiver agree that treatment is complete.
a. Early discontinuation of treatment against medical advice may result in incomplete correction of the head shape.
b. Continued use of the STARband against medical advice may restrict skull growth and may impair brain growth and development.
10. Explain the purpose of the cranial remodeling STARband to other caregivers, and train them in the proper application, removal, and wearing schedule. Training is important for family, friends, daycare personnel, and any other person taking caring of your baby.

Trying Out a 3D-Scanner That Makes Helmets Custom-Molded to Your Head
It’s not hard to find a badass-looking helmet for your adrenaline-fueled hobbies. The trick is finding one that fits correctly. For decades, that’s meant buying a standard (S/M/L) size lid and rearranging the padding to conform to your noggin. Recently, I got to try out a much better way.
Bell Helmets wants to bring helmet fitting into the 21st century, using 3D scanning to build a helmet to the exact contours of your head—no matter how weird and lumpy it is.
Getting a proper fitting helmet is about more than just comfort. The best lid in the world won’t do your skull much good if it’s so loose it flies off your head while you’re flying off your machine, while a helmet that pinches, pushes, or prods your noggin is one you’ll be reluctant to wear. Hitting the right balance of snug-but-comfortable, and checking off all the pointers that make sure you’re protected, can be a frustrating game for those of us with oddly-shaped domes. Bell’s new tech hopes to change that.
At a Bell event in New York City, I got the chance to go through the scanning process that makes this helmet customization possible. Conceptually, it’s pretty simple. After putting on a spandex cap to mash your hair down tight against your skull, you just sit still while a technician walks a proprietary, handheld 3D scanning eye around your head.
G/O Media may get a commission
In my case, that technician was Joe Tomascheski, senior product developer for parent company Easton-Bell Sports. Once you’ve been scanned, the computer creates a manipulatable 3D rendering of your head, neck, and shoulders. On screen, it looks unsettlingly like a Shapeways schematic for a 3D printed toy.
From these 3D coordinates, Bell makes a fully custom helmet liner that matches the unique contours of your head. This process takes a few days, and is a closely-guarded company secret, so while I wasn’t able to see or try on a customized helmet, Tomascheski explained what happens next.
Once you’ve been scanned, your 3D coordinates are sent back to Bell. They’re used to create a bespoke interior core, which is assembled into a complete helmet. This isn’t a process of tacking pieces of foam into an off-the-shelf lid; instead, it creates a single inner shell of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), the same material used in stock Bell helmets, but shaped to the exact specs from the 3D scan.
As Tomascheski explained, Bell prototyped the helmet customization service with powersports athletes for the past year and a half. Since the process involves changes to the way the helmets are constructed, Bell worked directly with both the U.S. Department of Transportation and the independent Snell Foundation to ensure the custom-built helmets meet the most stringent rating requirements.
A key facet in certification was the fact that these designs only add foam thickness where needed—no material is removed from the baseline foam thickness of a standard helmet. Tomascheski was very careful about phrasing this, but he told me that in certain cases during testing, the added foam thickness in the custom-tailored helmets decreased impact force when compared to standard models.
Bell first offered the scanning service to a small group of customers and professional racers at the 2013 Superbike World Championship at Laguna Seca, and it’ll continue to show the technology at both dirt and street motorcycle events throughout the summer. By late 2014, the company hopes to bring the service to about 20 Bell dealers around the country.
Currently, the company plans to offer the extreme customization on two of its full-face motorcycle helmets: the street-oriented Star Carbon (the black helmet shown above) and the off-road Moto-9. Exact pricing hasn’t been set, but at around $550-650 for the helmet, plus an estimated $400 for the custom fitment, this option probably won’t be cheap.
But these are just the first steps toward the future of helmet customization. Tomascheski tells me that Bell will keep scanned head dimensions on file, making it easy—and cheaper—to order subsequent custom-tailored lids. Plus the data the company gathers will help fine-tune the designs of both customized and off-the-shelf helmets in the future, and the technology might grow to include the company’s Giro brand of bicycle and snow sports helmets.
If you’ve got helmet-wearing hobbies, and you take your brain seriously, that price is probably worth it. Because with helmets, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts.

A collectible Fallout 76 helmet was recalled due to dangerous levels of mold
A collector’s edition wearable power armor helmet from Bethesda’s Fallout 76 sold through GameStop has been recalled due to extremely high levels of mold.
Approximately 20,000 units of the helmet were made, and 32 were sold through GameStop. Every recalled helmet sold was defined as the “Fallout 1:1 Power Armor Nuka Cola Helmet,” which has a “red painted finish with white-colored exterior tubing around the sides,” a GameStop representative told The Verge. The company has notified every customer who purchased the item, and has offered a full refund. Other iterations of the helmet, including different models, editions, or colors of Power Armor Helmets, were not affected, according to GameStop’s rep.
The CPSC is encouraging those who purchased the helmet to contact GameStop directly for a refund
The red helmets were recalled on September 19th, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Only the GameStop-exclusive, red-colored helmet is being recalled, not the (similar-looking) helmet that Bethesda included in its Collector’s Edition of the game. The helmets presented with mold on the fabric insert inside the helmet at a level that poses a risk of respiratory infections, especially for people with “compromised immune systems, damaged lungs or an allergy to mold.”
Although the product is made by a third-party company, this isn’t the first time that Bethesda has dealt with customer complaints about collector products. People were upset about a different Fallout 76 collectible item, another helmet, that was shipped with a nylon bag instead of a canvas one. The company ended up giving customers a $5 coupon for in-game currency, but even that wasn’t enough: it eventually ended up replacing the bag, too.

Great helmet. I took it for riding a monowheel. Very lightweight and comfortable. Size L fits the head 60cm, it is possible to put on a comforter and balaclava under it in the cold season.

The unicycle is a traumatic vehicle, so I decided not to waste money and buy a helmet with a high degree of protection – for downhill! I was worried that I was buying without trying on, I carefully measured my head several times. As a result, such a serious manufacturer as MET did not disappoint. After tightening the belt and ratcheting at the back, the helmet sits like a glove, as if it was made especially for me.In general, class! Includes spare cheeks, action camera mount and case. It’s not hot at +25. It looks very cool.

Met Pharashute again
I had the very first release of Met Parachute, which served faithfully for a long time and helped me out. Therefore, again the choice fell on the new model Met Parachute. The helmet is also lightweight, fits comfortably and is perfectly adjustable.The Met Parachute has become more brutal, AM and DH oriented compared to the old model, which adds confidence when riding. I tested it in the Caucasus, on Mashuk. It looks very cool. Recommend.
