How to choose a helmet for boxing – tips, recommendations
Read all Reviews
While boxing, it is important to protect your head from injury. Of course, such an attribute cannot completely protect a person from abrasions and bruises. Its main task is to close the most important points from the defeat – the nose, chin, ears and head as a whole. Find out how to choose a boxing helmet to improve your training and protect yourself from injury.
History of appearance
Analogues of modern helmets were used many centuries ago, from the period of fisticuffs. In the world of sports, such a protective agent has become widespread thanks to the legendary boxer Jack Dempsey. To hone his boxing skills, the athlete preferred to spend a long time in sparring. To protect his head, he asked his friend Jacob Golomb, founder of swimwear company Everlast, to make a head protector.
Golomb created the world’s first prototype model of a modern boxing helmet. The product fit snugly to the head, softened the force of blows, while not preventing them from dodging them and did not cause discomfort to the athlete. Since 1986, a boxing helmet has become a mandatory element of protection in boxing.

Material
Among the recommendations of experts on how to choose a boxing helmet, the main point is the choice of material from which the product is made. Modern manufacturers use natural and synthetic materials. In the first case, stronger and more reliable helmets are obtained. Leather products will last much longer than those made of leatherette, while their cost is much higher.
For light loads, you can choose leatherette equipment. With proper care, it will also last a long time.
Equipment filler is also important, it must be of high quality. The basis of the equipment is soft and dense material, usually it is polyethylene foam and foam rubber.
Types of helmets for boxing
All helmets can be divided into groups according to criteria such as:
- functionality;
- material of manufacture;
- athlete’s professional level;
- protective element parameters.
Considering all these criteria, the following types are distinguished:
- Training. Designed for reliable full or partial protection during training sessions. The product covers the ears, forehead, chin, cheeks.
- Tournament (combat). It is an open version, covers only the side of the head and forehead. He protects the boxer during the competition. The equipment provides a light degree of protection, while giving maximum visibility. The chin closure is a mandatory element for this group of equipment.
- Mexican. This type of boxing helmet first appeared in Mexico. It differs from other options by the presence of small openings in the eye area and overlays on the cheeks. Use during training partially protects the boxer from injury to the nose, eyes and cheekbones. The chin in such equipment remains open.
- With bumper. A distinctive feature of the model is an arc of foam filler and a metal plate that protrudes slightly forward. Depending on the location, the bumper protects the boxer from nose and jaw fractures, abrasions and facial wounds. A helmet with a bumper also has a significant drawback – a poor view from below, which impairs the athlete’s mobility.
- With visor. The presence of a visor in a helmet completely protects against contact of the athlete’s face with opponent’s gloves. A special grill or plastic mask is installed on the front of the equipment, designed to protect against bumps, abrasions and scratches. The model also has its drawbacks. The mask becomes an obstacle for the athlete to get enough oxygen, it can also fog up, making it difficult to see. If necessary, this element can be easily removed.
The choice of helmet depends on the level of the boxer.
Parameter | Characteristics and requirements |
---|---|
Good visibility | The degree of visibility is a criterion that is important for protection against impacts. If the boxer does not see the direction of the opponent’s punches, he will be defeated. Experienced athletes often sacrifice good protection in favor of a high degree of visibility. Usually these are open models with a thin layer of padding. |
Weight and size | The athlete’s mobility depends to some extent on these parameters. The lighter the weight and the tighter the product fits the head, the more comfortable the boxer is in it, he moves faster and better dodges punches. It is not recommended to choose helmets with too thick padding, then the head becomes a large target and it is difficult to close it from enemy blows. |
Strap | The presence of a strap allows you to securely fix the product on your head. The equipment should have a high-quality strap, durable and strong. |
Consider the advice of experts on how to choose a boxing helmet so that it becomes your reliable protection during sparring.
What to consider when buying?
When choosing a helmet, experts recommend paying attention to the following criteria:
- Convenience and comfort. Protective equipment should not cause discomfort. Professional boxers often sacrifice a high degree of protection in favor of convenience and comfort. The boxer should not reap anything, crush, block the view, annoy. The helmet should not squeeze the head or rotate on it.
- Quality. Such parameters depend on the materials used and their cost. If the equipment is made of high-quality and durable materials, it is always expensive. An expensive helmet will last several years, and a budget option will lose its usability after a couple of months after purchase.
- Packing. The degree of protection and the duration of operation of the product depends on the quality of the stuffing. In this case, often the thickness of the padding does not matter, the athlete’s feelings at the moment of taking the blow are taken into account. The damping properties of the equipment depend on the degree of stiffness of the padding.
To appreciate all these protection parameters, you need to try it on before buying and pay attention to how it feels.
What are the sizes
When choosing a boxing helmet, it is important to consider its size. If a child needs equipment, you can not use a helmet a few sizes larger, then it will not work. It is necessary to try on the product and evaluate your feelings:
- equipment should be comfortable, it should not hinder movement;
- the product should fit snugly on the head, there should be no free space between the head and the protection;
- it is important that the helmet provides adequate visibility.
It is more difficult for a child to choose a helmet than for an adult, because children’s bones are not yet strong enough. For this reason, it is important for them to provide an increased level of protection. It is recommended to use helmets with additional protection on the ears and choose models with a dense filler.
Please refer to this size chart when choosing a helmet for an adult.
Size | Head circumference (cm) |
---|---|
XS/S | 50-55 |
55-58 | |
L | 58-60 |
XL | 60-62 |
When buying boxing equipment, you need to know the circumference of your head. For measurements, you need to use a centimeter tape. The dimensions are arbitrary, they may differ for each manufacturer, so before buying a helmet, in any case, you need to try it on.
Care instructions
In order for a boxing helmet to serve for a long time, it is not enough to buy high-quality expensive protection, it is also important to provide it with proper care.
Incorrect actions quickly lead to equipment failure. Do not forget to adhere to the following rules for the care and handling of the product:
- It is forbidden to wash the helmet, such actions lead to its deformation. After using the equipment, wipe the inside of the product from sweat with a damp cloth and leave to dry in a well-ventilated area.
- Periodically, the helmet should be treated with antibacterial and disinfectants to prevent the growth of bacteria.
- When going to training or competition, you don’t need to put your helmet at the bottom of your bag and other things on top of it.
