When is the 2021 NBA All-Star Game taking place. Why did the NBA decide to hold an All-Star game this year. Who made the 2021 All-Star roster for Team LeBron and Team Durant. What are the new format changes for NBA All-Star 2021 due to COVID-19 protocols.
NBA All-Star 2021: Date, Time, and Location
The 2021 NBA All-Star Game is set to take place on Sunday, March 7th at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The venue for this year’s event is the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Originally scheduled to be held in Indianapolis, the NBA made the decision to relocate the game due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and potential scheduling conflicts with the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament.
Why was the game moved to Atlanta? The decision was primarily driven by logistical considerations and the need to adapt to the challenges posed by the pandemic. Atlanta, with its suitable facilities and ability to implement necessary health and safety protocols, emerged as the ideal alternative location.
The Controversial Decision to Hold the All-Star Game
The NBA’s choice to proceed with the All-Star Game in 2021 has been met with mixed reactions. Initially, the league had postponed the event, but later reversed course, citing various factors influencing their decision.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the controversy on ESPN’s The Jump, stating: “There were obviously those who thought we shouldn’t play without fans, thought we shouldn’t play in the bubble, thought we shouldn’t be playing in a very serious way because of the social justice issues roiling this country. So I certainly hear the other side of this issue here. And I’ll lastly say it seems like no decisions during this pandemic come without uncertainty and come without risk. This is yet another one of them, and yet it’s my job to balance all those interests and ultimately it feels like the right thing to do to go forward.”
Despite the league’s justification, some players and observers remain skeptical about the wisdom of holding the event during the pandemic. LeBron James, for instance, expressed his reservations earlier in February.
Attendance and Ticket Information for NBA All-Star 2021
Can fans purchase tickets for this year’s All-Star Game? Unfortunately, due to health and safety concerns, general ticket sales are not available for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. However, the event will not be entirely without spectators. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, approximately 1,200-1,500 people will be allowed in the stands.
Who will be attending the game? The limited audience will primarily consist of:
- Local healthcare workers
- Students and staff from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)
- Family members of participating All-Star players
In light of public health considerations, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has urged fans not to gather in large groups or make plans to visit the city for the All-Star Game. This precautionary measure aims to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission associated with the event.
2021 NBA All-Star Rosters: Team LeBron vs Team Durant
The 2021 NBA All-Star Game will feature a star-studded lineup, with LeBron James and Kevin Durant serving as team captains. The selection process involved votes from fans, a media panel, and current players. On March 4th, the All-Star draft aired on TNT, where James and Durant picked their teams.
Who are the key players to watch in this year’s All-Star Game? Some notable selections include:
- Giannis Antetokounmpo (Team LeBron) – First overall pick
- Kyrie Irving (Team Durant) – Second overall pick
- Stephen Curry (Team LeBron)
- Joel Embiid (Team Durant)
- Luka Doncic (Team LeBron)
- Kawhi Leonard (Team Durant)
It’s worth noting that Kevin Durant, despite being a team captain, will not play in the game due to a hamstring injury. However, he still fulfilled his role in selecting his team as captain and general manager.

Eastern Conference All-Stars: A Formidable Lineup
The Eastern Conference presents an equally impressive roster for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. While the original text doesn’t provide specific details about the Eastern Conference lineup, we can infer some likely participants based on the information given and the current NBA standings.
Potential Eastern Conference Starters:
- Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets, Forward) – Team captain, but not playing due to injury
- Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks, Forward)

- Nikola Vucevic (Orlando Magic, Center)
- Domantas Sabonis (Indiana Pacers, Forward)
How does the Eastern Conference lineup compare to the Western Conference? Both conferences feature a mix of established superstars and rising talents, promising an exciting and competitive All-Star Game.
Format Changes for NBA All-Star 2021
The NBA has implemented several changes to the All-Star Game format in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These modifications aim to ensure the safety of players, staff, and the limited number of attendees while still delivering an entertaining event for fans watching from home.
Key Format Changes:
- Condensed Schedule: Unlike previous years, where All-Star festivities spanned multiple days, the 2021 event will compress all activities into a single night.
- Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest: These competitions will take place before the main All-Star Game, rather than on a separate night.
- Slam Dunk Contest: This popular event will occur at halftime of the All-Star Game, adding excitement to the main event.
- Elam Ending: Introduced in 2020, the Elam Ending format will return, with teams competing to reach a target score in an untimed fourth quarter.
- Charity Focus: Each quarter will be played for a designated charity, with the winning team of each quarter earning money for their chosen organization.
How will these format changes impact the overall All-Star experience? While the condensed schedule may limit some of the usual festivities, it also promises a more focused and intense night of basketball excitement.
Rising Stars: Showcasing the NBA’s Future
The Rising Stars event, typically a highlight of All-Star Weekend, will take on a different form in 2021 due to the pandemic-related restrictions. While the physical game won’t be played, the NBA still plans to honor the top young talent in the league.
Notable Rising Stars Selections:
- Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans)
- Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies)
- LaMelo Ball (Charlotte Hornets)
- Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves)
- Tyrese Haliburton (Sacramento Kings)
What makes these young players stand out? Each brings a unique skill set and potential to become future All-Stars, with Williamson and Morant already making significant impacts in their sophomore seasons.
How will the Rising Stars be recognized without a physical game? The NBA plans to announce the full Rising Stars rosters, acknowledging the achievements of these young players and giving fans a glimpse of the league’s bright future.
The Impact of COVID-19 on NBA All-Star 2021
The ongoing global pandemic has significantly influenced the planning and execution of the 2021 NBA All-Star event. The league has had to balance the desire to celebrate its top talent with the need to prioritize health and safety.
Key COVID-19 Related Changes:
- Limited Attendance: Only a small number of specially invited guests will be present at the arena.
- Strict Testing Protocols: All participants, including players, coaches, and staff, will undergo rigorous COVID-19 testing.
- Bubble-Like Environment: While not as strict as the 2020 NBA Bubble, there will be limitations on player movements and interactions outside of the event.
- Virtual Fan Engagement: With most fans unable to attend in person, the NBA is likely to implement enhanced virtual fan experiences.
How have players and teams responded to these safety measures? While some players have expressed reservations about participating, the NBA has emphasized that all precautions are being taken to ensure a safe environment for the event.
What lessons has the NBA learned from managing regular-season games during the pandemic? The league has gained valuable experience in implementing health and safety protocols, which will be applied and potentially enhanced for the All-Star event.
The Role of HBCUs in NBA All-Star 2021
A unique aspect of the 2021 NBA All-Star Game is its focus on supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This initiative aligns with the NBA’s ongoing commitment to social justice and education.
HBCU Involvement in All-Star 2021:
- Financial Support: The NBA plans to contribute more than $2.5 million to HBCUs through the All-Star events.
- HBCU-Themed Musical Performances: The entertainment portions of the event will feature performances by HBCU musical groups.
- Court Design: The All-Star court will incorporate HBCU-inspired elements in its design.
- Special Invitations: Students and staff from HBCUs are among the limited number of attendees invited to the event.
Why is the NBA placing such emphasis on HBCUs this year? This focus reflects the league’s commitment to addressing racial inequality and supporting educational institutions that have historically served the Black community.
How might this partnership benefit HBCUs beyond the All-Star event? The increased visibility and financial support could lead to long-term partnerships and opportunities for HBCU students and alumni within the NBA and its associated organizations.
Predictions and Expectations for NBA All-Star 2021
As we approach the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, basketball fans and analysts are speculating about potential outcomes and memorable moments. While the unique format and circumstances of this year’s event make predictions challenging, there are several factors to consider.
Key Storylines to Watch:
- Team LeBron vs. Team Durant: How will the team dynamics play out, especially with Durant unable to participate as a player?
- First-Time All-Stars: Players like Zion Williamson and Jaylen Brown will be making their All-Star debuts. How will they perform on this big stage?
- Elam Ending Drama: Will we see another thrilling finish like in 2020, when Anthony Davis sealed the win with a free throw?
- Three-Point Shootout: With sharpshooters like Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard participating, could we see record-breaking performances?
- Slam Dunk Contest: How will the halftime slot affect the energy and creativity of the dunkers?
Who are the favorites to win MVP? Based on recent performances and All-Star history, players like LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Joel Embiid could be strong contenders for the MVP award.
What impact might the condensed format have on player performances? The single-night event could lead to more intense, focused play, potentially resulting in higher scoring and more spectacular highlights.
As we eagerly anticipate the 2021 NBA All-Star Game, it’s clear that despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the event promises to deliver excitement, skill, and a celebration of basketball excellence. While the format may be different, the core elements that make the All-Star Game a highlight of the NBA calendar remain intact: the best players in the world competing, collaborating, and showcasing their extraordinary talents.
NBA All-Star 2021: A complete guide with rosters, updated format and more
NBA All-Star Weekend, featuring some of the league’s biggest names, is quickly approaching. While the league initially postponed the All-Star game, they decided to move forward with it and have changed the format to adhere to COVID-19 protocols and guidelines.
Here’s everything you need to know from who’s playing to how to watch.
When is the NBA All-Star Game?
The 2021 NBA All-Star game takes place Sunday, March 7th at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The game was initially scheduled to take place in Indianapolis, but the NBA announced their decision to move the game due to the COVID-19 pandemic and schedule conflicts with the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament.
Why did the NBA decide to have an All-Star game after initially postponing it?
The NBA officially announced in February that this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend would take place in Atlanta, despite several players being vocal about not wanting to participate. LeBron James made that clear in his response to a question about playing in the All-Star game back in early February:
NBA commissioner Adam Silver joined ESPN’s The Jump to discuss the league’s decision to move forward with the All-Star game:
“There were obviously those who thought we shouldn’t play without fans, thought we shouldn’t play in the bubble, thought we shouldn’t be playing in a very serious way because of the social justice issues roiling this country,” Silver said during the interview. “So I certainly hear the other side of this issue here. And I’ll lastly say it seems like no decisions during this pandemic come without uncertainty and come without risk. This is yet another one of them, and yet it’s my job to balance all those interests and ultimately it feels like the right thing to do to go forward.”
For the record, some still think it’s a bad idea.
Can Sixers fans buy tickets to the All-Star game?
No, fans cannot buy tickets to this year’s All-Star game. However, there will be around 1,200-1,500 people allowed in the stands, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Local healthcare workers, students and staff from HBCUs and some family members of All-Star players were given special invitations to attend the game.
Due to public health concerns, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms asked fans not to congregate in large groups or make any plans to visit the city for the All-Star Game.
Who made the 2021 All-Star roster?
Joel Embiid made his fourth consecutive All-Star team, while Ben Simmons made his third consecutive All-Star team. Unfortunately, Tobias Harris – who made the strongest case of his career thus far for All-Star consideration – was excluded from the game.
LeBron James and Kevin Durant led the list of players who were voted and selected by fans, a media panel and current players. As the two NBA All-Star starters who led their conferences, James and Durant will serve as team captains for the Team LeBron vs. Team Durant game on Sunday.
On Thursday, March 4th, the NBA All-Star draft aired on TNT and both captains selected which all stars they wanted to represent their team:
For the third straight year, Embiid and Simmons are on opposing teams: Embiid is on Team Durant and Simmons is on Team LeBron. Maybe one day we’ll get to see the two pair up for an All-Star Game alley-oop.
Of course, if we keep getting content this good from the Sixers’ two stars during All-Star games, it doesn’t really matter what team they’re on:
With the first overall pick, LeBron James selected the NBA’s two-time reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The past two All-Star games James and Antetokounmpo were both captains. This year James is looking to defend his title after defeating Team Giannis at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game in Chicago. Kevin Durant drafted Brooklyn Nets teammate Kyrie Irving with the second overall pick in the draft. Durant will not play in the game due to an injured hamstring, but he still selected his team as captain and general manager.
Who are the 2021 West All-Stars (starters, reserves and coach)?
2021 Western Conference starters:
Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, Denver Nuggets forward Nikola Jokic and Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard.
2021 Western Conference reserves:
Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard, Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis (Davis is out with a calf injury, so Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker will replace him), Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George, Utah Jazz forward Rudy Gobert, Phoenix Suns guard Chris Paul and New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson.
2021 Western Conference coach:
Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder and his staff will coach Team LeBron
Who are the 2021 East All Stars (starters, reserves and coach)?
2021 Eastern Conference starters:
Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant (Durant is out with a hamstring injury, so Indiana Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis will replace him), Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal, Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Philadelphia 76ers forward Joel Embiid
2021 Eastern Conference reserves:
Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown, Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden, New York Knicks forward Julius Randle, Philadelphia 76ers forward Ben Simmons, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine, Orlando Magic center Nikola Vucevic.
2021 Eastern Conference coach:
Sixers head coach Doc Rivers and the Sixers’ staff will coach Team Durant thanks to the Sixers sitting in first place in the East at the halfway mark.
How can I watch the 2021 NBA All-Star game?
TNT’s coverage will begin at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT with the TNT NBA Tip-Off show. You can watch their television coverage on TNT or live steam it by signing in with a cable provider to the TBS website.
What’s different about this year’s All-Star weekend?
The NBA announced that, for the first time ever, all major All-Star weekend competitions will take place on the same day. According to The New York Times’ Marc Stein, the Rising Stars Challenge will not be played this year due to the limitation of having all the events in one night. However, the league continued its tradition of naming Rising Stars rosters by revealing the line-up via their new online NBA highlights company, NBA Top Shot. Zion Williamson and 2019 Rookie of the Year Ja Morant led the list of 20 players selected by NBA assistant coaches.
Neither Sixers rookie Tyrese Maxey nor Sixers second-year player Matisse Thybulle made the roster.
The 2021 NBA All-Star game will follow last year’s format using the “Elam Ending,” with teams competing to win each of the first three quarters, which will be 12 minutes each. For the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a target score will be set, and whichever team reaches that target score will be crowned champion. Also similar to last season, the league will honor Kobe Bryant by factoring in 24 into the final target score, according to The Athletic.
As part of the 2021 NBA All-Star game format, the league will provide more than $3 million in initial support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and communities of color disproportionately affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Donations will be made throughout the weekend’s games, challenges and contests to support the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, United Negro College Fund, National Association for Equal Opportunity, and Direct Relief’s Fund for Health Equity. More details here.
When is the 2021 NBA Slam Dunk Contest?
The dunk contest will take place during halftime of the All-Star Game. The league announced the three NBA players who will participate in this year’s contest:
While the All-Star game has big names that will entice fans to watch, the Slam Dunk Contest is lacking in that category. The league had a tough time getting players to participate in this year’s contest. New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson, Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown, Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Anthony Edwards and Charlotte Hornets guard Miles Bridges all declined their invitations to participate, according to Chris Haynes.
When is the 2021 Three-Point Contest and Skills Challenge?
The Taco Bell Skills Challenge and the Mountain Dew Three-Point Contest will take place prior to the game getting underway at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. The NBA announced the full list of participants on Tuesday, March 2nd: Devin Booker, Jaylen Brown, Stephen Curry, Zach LaVine, noted whiner Donovan Mitchell, and Jayson Tatum.
One All-Star reserve who won’t be participating in the Three-Point Contest this year is Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard, citing “rest purposes,” according to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes.
The NBA also announced the full list of NBA players who will participate in the Skills Challenge ahead of the game: former Process Sixer Robert Covington, Luka Doncic, Chris Paul, Julius Randle, Domantas Sabonis, and Nikola Vucevic.
What city will host 2022, 2023 and 2024 NBA All-Star games?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s game that was originally set for Indianapolis was postponed and the league gave the city the 2024 All-Star Game instead. With the league deciding to move forward with the 2021 All-Star game in Atlanta, these are the cities that will host upcoming All-Star games in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
2022
The 2022 NBA All-Star Game is slated for Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022 in Cleveland at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, home of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers previously hosted NBA All-Star in 1997 when the NBA celebrated its 50th anniversary and prior to that in 1981.
2023
The 2023 NBA All-Star Game will take place at Vivint Smart Home Arena, home of the very salty Utah Jazz, on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023. This will mark the 30th anniversary of the 1993 NBA All-Star Game played in Salt Lake City. NBA All-Star on-court events will tip off on Friday, Feb. 17 and will culminate with the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 19.
2024
The 2024 NBA All-Star Game, which was originally scheduled for Feb. 12-14, 2021 in Indianapolis will now be held at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Feb. 16-18, 2024.
2021 NBA Rising Stars: Zion Williamson, LaMelo Ball headline list of players selected for USA, World rosters
Getty Images
While there won’t be a Rising Stars game during the slate of All-Star festivities on March 7, the NBA still decided to announce which players have been honored with a roster spot. Like previous seasons, the teams were announced in a USA vs. World format, highlighting the growth of international talent in the league. As expected, many big names made the cut, including Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and Rookie of the Year frontrunner LaMelo Ball.
The 2021 NBA Rising Stars rosters are as follows:

Assistant coaches from around the league voted on who should fill out the rosters of both teams, choosing four frontcourt players, four guards and two additional players at any position. A minimum of three first-year players and three second-year players had to be selected, and no coach could vote for a player on their own team.
While it’s a shame we won’t be able to witness LaMelo Ball and Zion Williamson on the same team, it makes sense that the league didn’t also want to tack on the Rising Stars Game for safety reasons.
Everything you need to know about Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game on Sportsnet
This Sunday in Atlanta the 70th NBA All-Star Game will be played and — given the state of the world still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic — the usual festivities will work a little differently this year.
For starters, all the all-star events are being distilled down to just the all-star Sunday as opposed to a three-day extravaganza.
In order to make this work, the Rising Stars game is not being played this year and the All-Star Saturday Night’s competitions are all being crammed into Sunday’s main event, with the dunk contest taking place during half-time of Sunday’s big game.
Confused at how this is all working, or maybe just want to know who you’ll see when everything gets going Sunday at 5 p.m. ET on Sportsnet? Here’s a quick primer with everything you need to know.
All-Star Game rosters
The two all-star teams, Team LeBron and Team Durant, held a draft Thursday night and these were the results:
@utahjazz Guard @MCONLEY10 has been named by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to replace injured Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker on #TeamDurant in the 2021 #NBAAllStar Game. pic.twitter.com/5q8E6j0i9o

Reigning two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo was the first-overall selection by the Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James and Kyrie Irving went second overall with fellow Brooklyn Nets teammate Kevin Durant’s first pick.
Despite picking his team, Durant won’t be participating in Sunday’s game as it was announced last week he’d be out until after the all-star break with a hamstring strain.
Durant was replaced by Indiana Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis as an Eastern Conference all-star, but he ended up getting drafted by James. Additionally, because Durant is unable to play, Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics was named a starter in his place — and he ended up getting drafted by Durant.
In other injury news, Anthony Davis was selected as an all-star but will be unable to play, so Devin Booker was named as his injury replacement and was taken by Durant.
However, because of a knee injury that was announced Friday evening, Booker is unable to play, leading to Utah Jazz point guard Mike Conley taking his spot on Team Durant and earning his first-ever all-star nod, joining his teammates Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert.
In a bit of late news on Sunday, the NBA announced that the two Philadelphia 76ers all-stars, Joel Embiid on Team Durant and Ben Simmons on Team LeBron, will not be able to play on Sunday after it was discovered they had contact with an individual, who according to multiple reports is believed to be their personal barber, who tested positive for COVID-19.
Given the fact this was discovered on the day of the all-star game, no all-star replacements could be lined up for the two of them, but according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Zion Williamson will replace Embiid as a starter on Team Durant.
And just one quick note on the best part of Thursday’s all-star draft: Despite their protestations, the fact that Mitchell and Gobert were the last two picks of the draft despite playing for the NBA’s best team was absolutely slander against the Jazz — even if it’s true that no one outside of the state of Utah has ever picked them in any basketball video game ever.

All-Star Game format
If you remember last year’s spectacular all-star game, then you already know how this year’s works.
NBA All-Star Game Format
The game will follow the same format as last year, with the teams competing to win each quarter and playing to a Final Target Score during the untimed fourth quarter. #NBAAllStar

The super fun Elam Ending is returning with the hopes that the contest will end up just as competitive as last year’s.
Basically, the way this works is the first three quarters will all be mini games to each their own, with the score resetting to 0-0 after each quarter. These first three quarters will last the standard 12 minutes, but then everything will change in the fourth quarter.
When the fourth rolls around, the game clock will turn off and a target score will be set where the goal will be to hit that target score or surpass, with the first team to do so winning. This target score will be set by the team that’s scored the most cumulative points over the first three quarters plus 24 — a nice little homage to the late Kobe Bryant from last year that’s stuck around for this year at least.
So, for example, if, over the first three quarters, Team LeBron scored 35, 37 and 29 points for a total of 101 and Team Durant scored 33, 40 and 23, points, respectively, for 96 points then the target to meet would be 125 points as Team LeBron ended up scoring more over the course of the game, despite dropping two quarters to Team Durant.
It’s also worth noting that, using this example again, Team LeBron would start the fourth quarter with 101 points and Team Durant with 96.
Written out it may seem complicated, but what you need to know is that this kind of finish to the game is called an Elam Ending — named after Nick Elam, an educational leadership professor at Ball State University, the man who invented it — and it ensures that the game will end on a basket, meaning if you’re a team that’s behind you have a chance to come back because the clock isn’t a factor in your comeback attempt, and if you’re ahead it incentivizes playing hard right to the end because you have to keep scoring to win.
In other words, the game, theoretically, will stay competitive right to the final possession.
All-Star Game court
When the all-star game was announced, along with it came a commitment from the NBA to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The league has announced it has donated $3 million already in initial support of HBCUs and the court on Sunday in Atlanta will be a special HBCU-inspired court design.

Additionally, players will wear patches celebrating the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and UNCF, and the three all-star game officials will be alumni from HBCUs, Norfolk State graduate Tom Washington, Courtney Kirkland, who graduated from Southern University and Clark Atlanta University grad Tony Brown.
Slam Dunk Competition
Because it’s taking place during half-time of the all-star game, the dunk contest will be smaller this year with only a three-man field.
The three competitors are Cassius Stanley of the Indiana Pacers (though he’s currently with the Pacers’ G League team), New York Knicks rookie Obi Toppin and Anfernee Simons of the Portland Trail Blazers.
This isn’t exactly a star-studded field and isn’t one that many fans would want to see, particularly because it’s possible a better dunk show will be put on by first time all-star Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans during the game itself — a guy that just about every hoops fanatic wanted to see in the NBA dunk contest after his legendary high school exploits in this kind of competition.
Alas, this is what we have to work with, and though just looking at the names on paper may seem disappointing, make no mistake, all of these guys have some serious bounce.
Still not convinced? Check out these clips:

For our money, we like Toppin to take the event, but all of these guys have the bunnies to put on an entertaining show, regardless.
Three-Point Contest
Of all the all-star events taking place, this is probably the most anticipated one because of the killer field.
Mike Conley, Jaylen Brown, Stephen Curry, Zach LaVine, Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum. All of these guys are absolute gunners from deep and you can make a case for each of them to win the whole damn thing.
Given how important and prevalent the three-point shot is in today’s NBA game is makes sense that the three-point shooting competition would take centre stage as the premier all-star event. This killer field is a perfect reflection of what modern basketball is all about.
Skills Challenge
The least-heralded event of all the NBA all-star festivities, the skills competition is back once again with what has now become the standard ‘Bigs vs. Smalls’ format.
The six participants this year are Robert Covington, Luka Doncic, Chris Paul, Julius Randle, Domantas Sabonis and Nikola Vucevic.
Most interestingly about this event is Paul’s inclusion. This will be the fifth time he’s participating in it and the first time since 2011. And despite the number of times he’s entered, Paul has never won it.
At 35 years of age it’s unclear how many more of these events Paul may have left in him, so simply for his sake of not needing to do one of these again, we’ll be rooting hard for him to finally win.

Despite there being no Rising Stars game, the two Rising Stars teams (Team USA and Team World) were announced with five Canadians making the cut on the World squad.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker, R.J. Barrett, Brandon Clarke, Luguentz Dort and Mychal Mulder are all great young Canadians with a bright future ahead of them.
Something really cool about the Rising Stars this year was that the rosters were revealed using NBA Top Shot. When the pack drops those moments are likely to fetch a pretty penny.

Prized New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson headlines the rosters released Friday for the 2020 NBA Rising Stars Game, which will be played Feb. 14 at the United Center in Chicago.
Williamson, the No. 1 pick in the 2019 draft, was selected despite playing just four games since recovering from October knee surgery. His potential has already been evident, however, as he’s averaged 18 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 63. 3 percent from the field.
He’s joined by the Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young as part of the annual All-Star Weekend showcase that features the league’s top first- and second-year players.
Here’s a look at the complete rosters:
Team USA
Miles Bridges (Charlotte Hornets)
Wendell Carter Jr. (Chicago Bulls)
Devonte’ Graham (Charlotte Hornets)
Tyler Herro (Miami Heat)
Jaren Jackson Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies)
Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies)
Kendrick Nunn (Miami Heat)
Eric Paschall (Golden State Warriors)
P.J. Washington (Charlotte Hornets)
Zion Williamson (New Orleans Pelicans)
Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks)
Team World
Nickeil Alexander-Walker (New Orleans Pelicans)
Deandre Ayton (Phoenix Suns)
RJ Barrett (New York Knicks)
Brandon Clarke (Memphis Grizzlies)
Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Rui Hachimura (Washington Wizards)
Svi Mykhailiuk (Detroit Pistons)
Josh Okogie (Minnesota Timberwolves)
Moritz Wagner (Washington Wizards)
The Rising Stars Challenge, which debuted in 1994, has a rich history, with an MVP list that includes Allen Iverson, Gilbert Arenas, Amar’e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, John Wall and Kyrie Irving.
Kyle Kuzma of the Los Angeles Lakers won the award last year after scoring a game-high 35 points to lead Team USA to a 161-144 victory.
“There was a lot of great players out there, All-Stars. We’re all young rising stars in this league,” Kuzma told reporters last year. “Obviously it’s an exhibition, but it’s always better to have bragging rights whenever you can.”
Those comments proved prophetic, as five players from last year’s Rising Stars Game earned a place in this season’s All-Star Game: Doncic, Young, Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz), Ben Simmons (Philadelphia 76ers) and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics).
Doncic and Young return to the Rising Stars this year.
Team World holds a 3-2 edge since the game’s format switched away from having former NBA players serve as captains of the two squads in 2015. Before that, the league had tried a few different styles, most commonly a head-to-head matchup between the rookies and sophomores.
Tipoff for the 2020 NBA Rising Stars Game is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET on Feb. 14 with a national broadcast on TNT.
What a USA vs. Rest of World NBA All-Star Game would look like
Father Time has proven no match for LeBron James yet, as the four-time league MVP and 17-time All-Star is still averaging 25.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.8 assists in this, his age-36 season.
A strong GOAT candidate, James has put together a career that many wouldn’t even dare dream of, and he’s still continuing to dominate despite it approaching the twilight of his career. James has remained so good, in fact, that it’s perfectly conceivable he wins his fifth league MVP award this season.
The rest of the world may be catching up to the States in basketball, but they still haven’t produced a LeBron quite yet.
On the other side, there’s Nikola Jokic, who we know technically isn’t a power forward. Nevertheless, we decided to use him at this spot because the Rest of the World roster didn’t leave us with many better options at the 4 while Jokic and the player who we picked to be his frontcourt partner for this exercise were both way too good to pass up.
The Denver Nuggets may be disappointing a bit relative to expectations this season, but the Serbian center has truly performed like an MVP frontrunner, averaging 26.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while leading the league in PER, Win Shares, Win Shares per 48 Minutes, BPM and VORP, a truly ridiculously accomplishment this far into the season.
If the Nuggets as a whole were performing at an even slightly higher level, there’d be far less discussion about Jokic’s worthiness as an MVP candidate.
This matchup is one of the most interesting on the book, as Jokic is naturally a center while James is almost like a point guard playing power forward. Jokic outshines James to a huge extent statistically this year, but from a purely on-court standpoint, how would he slow down the four-time MVP on the perimeter?
And for that matter, what would James do against Jokic deep post-ups?
This would be an extremely back-and-forth affair, with both guys scoring on each other almost at will during the first three quarters of the game, but who do we trust more to get buckets on the other player late in a potentially very tight game? We have to go with the guy who has proven it time and time again in the playoffs.
We’re going with James here.
Sports Take: NBA should do away with current Rising Stars roster format

By Marquis Cooley | Reporter
NBA All-Star weekend concluded on Sunday, and despite a pandemic, the NBA was able to fit the majority of the events into one jam-packed night. As the league begins to look toward the 2022 NBA All-Star weekend in Cleveland, NBA commissioner Adam Silver, with the help of the National Basketball Player Association, will strive to improve the weekend as they have in years past. While a lot of the changes have been quite entertaining, such as team captains and the fourth quarter target score in the All-Star game, others haven’t been as successful — the Rising Stars game being the perfect example.
Although the Rising Stars game wasn’t played this year, the NBA released the names of the players that would’ve been invited and with it revealed why the NBA needs to ditch the Team USA vs. Team World format. The Rising Stars game is a chance for the best first and second year players in the league to showcase their skills on a national stage and acknowledge them for their early success in the league, but when 29-year-old third-string point guards like Facundo Campazzo are making it over starters whose average triple their stats, there’s a problem.
The concept was interesting and entertaining at first, when current NBA stars like Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic were playing for Team World to make things more balanced, but for the past three years, the Team USA rosters has been filled with much better players than Team World, which has been proven by Team USA winning in both 2019 and 2020 by over 20 points.
This year, it was clearer than ever that there is a disparity in talent between the two teams. Team USA struggled to decide who belonged on the roster, whereas Team World had an issue of finding eligible players.
In order to make the game more competitive and fun to watch, they should pick the 20 best eligible players, regardless of nationality, and select the best rookie from each conference as team captains, similar to the All-Star game. This would give it the same excitement the All-Star game currently has in terms of speculating who will play on what team. Most of the NBA rookies either played against each other or on the same team growing up, such as Zion Willamson and Ja Morant playing on the same 8th-grade team, so it would be fun witnessing former teammates reunite.
The problem with the Rising Stars game is not the talent; there’s more exciting young prospects in the league now than ever before. The problem is that the current format isn’t allowing fans to truly witness the best of the league’s brightest young stars.

We’ve reached the midway point in the 2020-21 NBA season, meaning All-Star Weekend is upon us, with the All-Star Game set to take place on Monday, March 8 (AEDT) at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA.
After the season opened in late December, this year’s All-Star festivities are taking place a few weeks later than normal. Also unique to this year is that it will be an all-encompassing one-day experience, with the Taco Bell Skills Challenge and MTN DEW 3-Point Contest preceding the All-Star Game, and the AT&T Slam Dunk taking place at halftime of the game.

NBA All-Star 2021 will be on Monday, March 8 (AEDT) at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA, home of the Atlanta Hawks.
With all scheduled events taking place on Sunday, the night begins with the Skills Challenge, which starts at 10:30 a.m. (AEDT) and will be immediately followed by the 3-Point Contest. Upon the conclusion of the Skills Challenge and the 3-Point Contest, All-Stars will begin warming up for the 70th NBA All-Star game, scheduled to tip off at 12:00 p.m. (AEDT).
This is the first time that the city of Atlanta has hosted the All-Star Game since 2003, which was Michael Jordan’s final All-Star appearance.
While the weekend was originally slated to take place in Indianapolis, IN, the move to Atlanta was prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and Indianapolis has been awarded NBA All-Star 2024.

Just as in years past, fans accounted for 50 percent of All-Star starters voting while the other 50 percent was made up by current players and a media panel, with each side accounting for 25 percent of the vote.
Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James was the leading vote-getter from fans for a fifth-straight year and will serve as a captain alongside Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant, who was the East’s leading vote-getter.
Although a hamstring injury will hold Durant out of this year’s All-Star Game, he will still serve as captain for Team Durant. Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum will start in place of Durant.
Here’s a look at how the starting lineups were selected in this year’s All-Star draft.

Following the announcement of All-Star starters, the league’s 30 head coaches voted to select seven All-Star reserves from their respective conference but could not select players from their own team.
Coaches were to select two guards, three frontcourt players and two other players of either designation, which are also considered to be wild cards. Injury replacements were selected by Commissioner Adam Silver.
Team Durant made the first selection among the pool of reserves. Here’s how the rest of the rosters turned out.

After seeing 10 first-time All-Stars in 2020, there are five first-time All-Stars in this year’s game:
- Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics
- Mike Conley, Utah Jazz
- Zach LaVine, Chicago Bulls
- Julius Randle, New York Knicks
- Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans
It is worth noting that Williamson (20 years, 244 days) will be the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to take part in an All-Star Game.

Jazz head coach Quin Snyder will be the lead man for Team LeBron while 76ers head coach Doc Rivers will be at the helm for Team Durant.
Both Snyder and Rivers were named All-Star coaches on Feb. 19 as each of their respective teams clinched the top record in their respective conferences through games played on Feb. 21. While it is the third time Rivers will coach an All-Star Game (2008, 2011), this is the first time Snyder will coach in an All-Star Game.
After last year’s success, the 2021 NBA All-Star Game will have the same competitive format as the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, a dynamic that makes every quarter count.
- The two All-Star teams will compete to win each quarter for their respective beneficiaries.
- Each of the first three quarters will begin with a score of 0-0 and will last 12 minutes. The winner of each 12-minute quarter (first, second and third) will be the team that scores the most points within the quarter.
- The fourth quarter will be untimed and the teams will play to a Final Target Score, meaning that the game will end with a made basket or a made free throw instead of with the clock running out.
- The Final Target Score will be determined by taking the leading team’s total cumulative score through three quarters and adding 24 points – the 24 representing Kobe Bryant’s jersey number.
- The first team to reach (or surpass) the Final Target Score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

As part of NBA All-Star 2021, the NBA announced additional details regarding the NBA family’s collective support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and communities of colour disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. As previously announced, the NBA family, including partners AT&T, MTN DEW®, State Farm® and Taco Bell®, will collectively provide more than $3 million in initial support to the HBCU community through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), UNCF (United Negro College Fund), National Association for Equal Opportunity (NAFEO) and Direct Relief’s Fund for Health Equity.
Through contributions and awareness, the NBA family will further the urgent and longstanding work and traditions of these organizations and institutions to create greater educational, financial and health equity. During the past year, public health data has made clear that the cumulative effect of historic racial and economic inequities in our country have worsened the impact of the pandemic on communities of colour and predominately Black institutions. HBCUs – which produce 20 percent of the country’s Black college graduates but only account for three percent of all colleges in the United States – were particularly impacted by COVID-19, experiencing drastic declines in funding and enrollment.

Missing from this year’s All-Star festivities is the Rising Stars Challenge, the league’s annual showcase of first- and second-year players, which will not be played due to the limitation of having All-Star events all on one night. Although there won’t be a game played this year, the NBA recognized its Rising Stars by announcing rosters on Thursday, March 4.

Trident, Solaris, Dombay and others. The countries of the world have chosen names for 112 exoplanets and their stars

In the constellation Pegasus, at a distance of about 160 light years from Earth, there is a small star – an orange dwarf, slightly inferior in weight and size to our Sun.And a huge exoplanet revolves around it – a gas giant with a diameter larger than Jupiter.
Until today, the star did not have a name of its own, astronomers knew it as BD + 14 ° 4559. But on Tuesday, the dwarf received the official name – Solaris, in honor of the famous novel by Stanislav Lem. The giant exoplanet was named Pirx.
The names of both celestial bodies were chosen as a result of a national vote in Poland – they were chosen from almost 3000 options.
Exactly the same competition was held in 111 countries around the world – and on Tuesday the International Astronomical Union (IAU) summed up its results, naming more than a hundred planets outside the solar system and the same number of stars around which they revolve.
As a result, not only Solaris, but also Divo, Petra, Trident and two hundred more new names appeared on the map of the starry sky.
Who voted and how
The competition lasted more than six months, anyone interested could take part in it and propose their own version of a pair of names – it was only necessary to briefly explain their choice.
In June, astronomers handed out a star-planet pair to the participating countries and gave almost four months to receive applications, two weeks to select nominees and another month to conduct a national vote.
Russia chose the name for the star HAT-P-3 in the constellation Ursa Major. According to the results of the national competition held by the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the “bear” orange dwarf was named Dombai – in honor of the resort region in the North Caucasus. His companion, discovered in 2007, was christened Teberda – after the name of the mountain river flowing in the same place.

In total, the Russians proposed 307 variants of names, but less than 2500 people took part in the final vote.
For comparison: in the USA there were about the same number of votes (2616), in Canada and even less (792), but in the UK for 515 options were submitted – almost 15 thousand votes.
Ukrainians named their star (HAT-P-15 in the constellation Perseus) Bereginya. As stated in the description, initially the Slavs called the coastal water spirit-mermaid (from the word “coast”), but “recently she received the status of a national goddess – the keeper of the hearth and protector of the earth.” One of the plains of Venus has already been named in her honor – since 1985.
The name Trident was chosen for Beregin’s companion (Trident is spelled in Ukrainian) – an ancient national sign, leading its history from the family coat of arms of Rurikovich and still one of the official symbols of Ukraine.
The inhabitants of Azerbaijan named the star they got (HD 152581 in the constellation Ophiuchus) Mehseti – in honor of the 12th century poetess Mehseti Ganjavi. The exoplanet revolving around it received the name Ganja – this is the name of the country’s second largest city, founded in the 7th century.
The British named their star-planet pair Gloas and Kruinlach, respectively. Both names come from the Manx Gaelic language: gloas means “to shine”, cruinlagh means “to rotate”.
The American names of the couple are Nushagak and Malchatna, this is the name of the river in Alaska and its tributary.
Prohibited Options
A complete list of winners by country can be viewed on the IAS website.
This is the second such competition held by the International Astronomical Union. The first took place in 2015, and then the vote was worldwide, since the names were chosen for only 14 stars and 31 exoplanets.
According to the rules, the names proposed to celestial bodies should “belong to objects, people or places of great and long-term cultural, historical or geographical significance”, or “be thematically related to the sky, astronomy, the constellation in which the system is located.”

Names must be pronounced and have a length of four to 16 characters in Latin transcription.
In order to avoid possible conflict situations, the organizers decided that they would not consider the names of politicians, military or religious leaders, as well as people still living or those who died less than a century ago, as options.
It was also prohibited to put to the vote the names of organizations or goods, animal names, abbreviations or specially invented names.
The organizers of the competition emphasize that the approved names are not a replacement for traditional astronomical codes, but are full names of celestial bodies “and can be used along with scientific designations or instead of them.”

List of largest Stars – Interesting
List of the largest stars

The ratio of the sizes of the planets of the solar system and some well-known stars, including VY Canis Major:
Mercury Earth Jupiter Sirius Aldebaran Betelgeuse <μ Cephei The list below includes the largest known stars. The equatorial radius of the Sun, 695,500 km, is used as a unit for measuring the radius of a star. The exact order of the stars in this list is not fully determined for a number of reasons. For example, the distances to most of the given stars are inaccurate to varying degrees, which affects the determination of the size of the stars; also, some large stars have extended atmospheres and opaque dust envelopes and disks, or pulsate.Contents [remove] 1 List 2 See also 3 Notes 4 References [edit] ListStar Radius, R☉ No. Designation 1 VY Big Dog 1800 1] 2 WOH G64 1738 [2] 3 VV Cephei A 1600-1900 4 V354 Cephei 1520 5 KW Sagittarius 1460 6 KY Cygnus 1420 7 μ Cephei star 1420 8 Betelgeuse (α Orion) ~ 1000 9 V509 Cassiopeia 910 10 V838 Unicorn 800 11 V382 Carina 747 12 Antares (α Scorpio) 700 [3] 14 S Goldfish 550 15 T Cephei 540 [5] 16 S Orion 530 [6] 17 W Hydra 520 [7] 18 119 Taurus 510 [8] 19 R Cassiopeia 500 [ 9] 20 Vesen (δ Big Dog) 482 21 χ Cygnus 470 [10] 22 Ras Alget and (α Hercules) 460 23 ρ Cassiopeia 450 24 Mira A (ο Ceti) 400 [11] 25 η Carina 400 26 R Goldfish 370 27 HR Carina 350 28 R Leo 350 [12] 29 Star Pistol 340 30 La Superba (Y Canum Venaticorum) 300 31 Deneb (α Cygnus) 220 32 LBV 1806-20 200 33 ε Charioteer A 175 34 Hedus I ( ζ Charioteer) 160 [13] 35 Enif (ε Pegasus) 150 36 Gakrux (γ of the Southern Cross) 113 37 Albireo (β Swan) A1 109 38 Alamak (γ Andromeda) 83 39 Arneb ( α Hare) 77 40 Crossbar (β Orion) 70 41 Avior (ε Carina) 70 42 R Northern Crown 65 43 Canopus (α Carina) 65 44 Mintaka (δ Orion) 60 45 Alnitak (ζ Orion) 60 46 Mirfak (α Perseus) 60 47 Mekbuda (ζ Gemini) 60 48 η Eagle 60 49 Etamin ( γ Dragon) 50 50 Aldebaran (α Taurus) 43 [14] 51 Cohab (β Ursa Minor) 41 Deep Space Objects> Stars Stars – celestial bodies and giant glowing spheres of plasma. There are billions of them in our Milky Way galaxy alone, including the Sun. Not so long ago, we learned that some of them also have planets. Now you can easily buy a telescope and observe the night sky or use telescopes online on our website. Since ancient times, stars in the sky have played an important role in many cultures. They were noted not only in myths and religious stories, but also served as the first navigational tools. That is why astronomy is considered one of the oldest sciences. The appearance of telescopes and the discovery of the laws of motion and gravity in the 17th century helped to understand that all stars resemble our Sun, and therefore obey the same physical laws. Photo of a dying star. Image captured by Hubble Space Telescope The invention of photography and spectroscopy in the 19th century (the study of the wavelengths of light emanating from objects) made it possible to penetrate the stellar composition and principles of motion (the creation of astrophysics). The first radio telescope appeared in 1937. With its help, it was possible to find invisible stellar radiation. And in 1990, the first Hubble Space Telescope was launched, capable of obtaining the deepest and most detailed view of the Universe (high-quality photos of Hubble for various celestial bodies can be found on our website). Ancient people did not possess our technical advantages, so they recognized images of various creatures in celestial objects. These were the constellations that were myths about to remember the names. Moreover, almost all of these names have survived and are used today. In the modern world, there are 88 constellations (among them 12 are zodiacal). The brightest star is designated alpha, the second is beta, and the third is gamma. And so it continues until the end of the Greek alphabet. There are stars that represent body parts. For example, the brightest star of Orion Betelgeuse (Alpha Orion) is “the arm (armpit) of a giant.” Red supergiant Betelgeuse Do not forget that all this time many catalogs were compiled, whose designations are still used today. For example, the Henry Draper Catalog suggests spectral classifications and positions for 272,150 stars. Betelgeuse designation – HD 39801. But there are an incredible number of stars in the sky, so abbreviations denoting star type or catalog are used for new ones. For example, PSR J1302-6350 is a pulsar (PSR), J is the “J2000” coordinate system, and the last two groups of numbers are coordinates with latitude and longitude codes. Are the stars all the same? Well, when you watch without using a technique, they are only slightly different in brightness. But these are just huge balls of gas, right? Not really. In fact, stars have a classification based on their main characteristics. Among the representatives can be found blue giants and tiny brown dwarfs. Sometimes bizarre stars like neutron stars come across. Diving into the Universe is impossible without understanding these things, so let’s get to know the stellar types better. Protostar This is what we see before a full star appears. A protostar is an accumulation of gas that has collapsed from a molecular cloud. The evolutionary phase takes approximately 100,000 years. Further, gravity gains strength, and forces the formation to collapse. Gravity heats up the gas and forces it to release energy. This moment comes before the transition to the main sequence star.It comes at the end of the protostar, when the energy is given only by the gravitational force that destroys it. Such stars do not yet have sufficient heat and pressure to activate the process of nuclear fusion. On T Tauri stars, you can see huge spots, flares of X-rays and powerful gusts of winds. This stage covers 100,000 million years. Most of the universe stars are in the main sequence stage. You can remember the Sun, Alpha Centauri A and Sirus. They are able to radically differ in scale, massiveness and brightness, but they carry out one process: they transform hydrogen into helium. This produces a huge energy surge. Such a star experiences a sense of hydrostatic balance. Gravity makes an object shrink, but nuclear fusion pushes it out. These forces work to balance, and the star manages to maintain the shape of a sphere. The size depends on the massiveness. The line is 80 Jupiter masses. This is the minimum mark at which it is possible to activate the melting process. But in theory, the maximum mass is 100 solar. Red giant When the star has completely used up the internal fuel, it can no longer create external pressure, and therefore does not oppose the internal one. The star shrinks, and the shell around the core ignites, extending its life, but increasing in size. The star transforms into a red giant and can be 100 times larger than the representative in the main sequence. When there is no hydrogen left, helium and even heavier elements start to burn. This stage takes several hundred million years. White dwarf If there is no fuel, then the star no longer has enough mass to prolong nuclear fusion. She turns into a white dwarf. External pressure does not work and it shrinks in size due to gravity. The dwarf continues to shine because there are still hot temperatures. When it cools down, it will return to background temperature. This will take hundreds of billions of years, so it is simply impossible to find a single representative yet. This is the most common type. Before us is a main sequence star with a low mass, which is why it is significantly inferior in temperature to the Sun. But it wins at the expense of life expectancy. The fact is that they manage to consume fuel at a slow pace, therefore they are distinguished by significant savings. Observations say that such objects can survive for up to 10 trillion years. The smallest specimens reach only 0.075 times the solar mass, but they can gain as much as 50%. When a star is 1.35-2.1 times the solar mass, it does not end its existence as a white dwarf, but illuminates the sky with a supernova explosion. After that, the core remains, which acts as a neutron star. This is a very interesting object, as it is entirely represented by neutrons. The fact is that a powerful gravitational force compresses the protons and electrons, which form neutrons. If the mass of the star was even greater, then a black hole would unfold in front of us. The largest stars are called supergiants. They are tens of times larger than the solar mass, but they are not so lucky: the larger the size, the shorter the life. They are rapidly consuming internal fuel (several million years). Therefore, they live a short life and die like supernovae. As you understand, there are different types of stars. Understanding this will help you understand the evolutionary stage of the object and even understand what awaits it. Brown dwarf Brown dwarfs are objects that are too large for planets but too small for stars.Their mass begins with a double Jupiter and can reach 0.08 solar masses. They form like ordinary stars – from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust. But they do not have enough temperature and pressure to start nuclear fusion. For a long time they were considered only theoretical objects, until the first specimen was found in 1995. Cepheid Cepheids – stars that have evolved from the main sequence to the Cepheid instability band. These are ordinary radio-pulsating stars with a noticeable relationship between periodicity and luminosity. For this they are appreciated by scientists, because they are excellent assistants in determining distances in space. They also show changes in radial velocity corresponding to the photometric curves. The brighter ones have a long periodicity. Classical representatives – supergiants, whose mass is 2-3 times that of the sun. They are in the moment of fuel combustion at the stage of the main sequence and transform into red giants, crossing the line of instability of the Cepheids. Double stars To be more precise, the concept of a “double star” does not represent the real picture. In fact, we have a stellar system in front of us, represented by two stars orbiting a common center of mass. Many people make the mistake of mistaking for a double star two objects that appear to be close when viewed with the naked eye. Scientists benefit from these objects because they help calculate the mass of individual participants. When they move in a common orbit, Newton’s calculations for gravity can calculate mass with incredible precision. Several categories can be distinguished according to visual properties: obscuring, visual binary, spectroscopic binary, and astrometric. Eclipsing – stars whose orbits create a horizontal line from the observation site. That is, a person sees a double eclipse on the same plane (Algol). Visual – two stars that can be resolved with a telescope. If one of them shines very brightly, then it can be difficult to separate the other. Let’s take a closer look at the star birth process. First, we see a giant, slowly rotating cloud filled with hydrogen and helium. Internal gravity causes it to curl inward, which causes the rotation to accelerate. The outer parts are transformed into a disk, and the inner parts into a spherical cluster. The material collapses, becoming hotter and denser.Soon a spherical protozon appears. When heat and pressure rise to 1 million ° C, atomic nuclei merge and a new star is ignited. Nuclear fusion converts a small amount of atomic mass into energy (1 gram of mass converted into energy is equivalent to an explosion of 22,000 tons of TNT). See also the explanation in the video to better understand the issue of stellar generation and development. Based on the mass of a star, it is possible to determine its entire evolutionary path, since it passes through certain template stages. There are stars of intermediate mass (like the Sun) 1.5-8 times the solar mass, more than 8, and also up to half the solar mass. Interestingly, the greater the mass of a star, the shorter its life span. If it reaches less than a tenth of the sun, then such objects fall into the category of brown dwarfs (they cannot ignite nuclear fusion). An intermediate-mass object begins life as a cloud 100,000 light years across. For folding into a protostar, the temperature must be 3725 ° C.From the moment the hydrogen fusion begins, T Tauri, a variable with fluctuations in brightness, can be formed. The subsequent process of destruction will take 10 million years. Further, its expansion will be balanced by the contraction of gravity, and it will appear in the form of a main sequence star, receiving energy from hydrogen fusion in the core. The lower figure shows all the stages and transformations in the process of the evolution of stars. Stages of evolution of a star When all the hydrogen is melted into helium, gravity will crush the matter into the core, causing a rapid heating process. The outer layers expand and cool, and the star becomes a red giant. Further, helium begins to fusion. When it dries up, the core contracts and becomes hotter, expanding the shell. At maximum temperature, the outer layers are blown away, leaving a white dwarf (carbon and oxygen) whose temperature reaches 100,000 ° C. There is no more fuel, so it gradually cools down. After billions of years, they end up as black dwarfs. The formation and death of a high-mass star is incredibly fast.It only takes 10,000-100,000 years for it to move from a protostar. During the main sequence, these are hot and blue objects (1000 to a million times brighter than the Sun and 10 times wider). Next, we see a red supergiant starting to fuse carbon into heavier elements (10,000 years). As a result, an iron core is formed with a width of 6,000 km, whose nuclear radiation can no longer withstand the force of gravity. As a star approaches 1.4 solar masses, electron pressure can no longer keep the core from collapsing.Because of this, a supernova is formed. When destroyed, the temperature rises to 10 billion ° C, breaking iron into neutrons and neutrinos. In just a second, the core collapses to a width of 10 km and then explodes in a Type II supernova. The Eskimo Nebula is one of the last stages in the evolution of a small star If the remaining core reached less than 3 solar masses, then it turns into a neutron star (practically from some neutrons). If it rotates and emits radio pulses, then it is a pulsar. If the core is more than 3 solar masses, then nothing will keep it from destruction and transformation into a black hole. A low-mass star spends its fuel reserves so slowly that it will become a main sequence star only after 100 billion – 1 trillion years. But the age of the universe reaches 13.7 billion years, which means that such stars have not yet died. Scientists have found that these red dwarfs are not destined to merge with anything other than hydrogen, which means that they will never grow into red giants. As a result, their fate is cooling and transformation into black dwarfs. We are used to the fact that our system is illuminated exclusively by one star. But there are other systems in which two stars in the sky orbit relative to each other. More precisely, only 1/3 of the stars similar to the Sun are located alone, and 2/3 are double stars. For example, Proxima Centauri is part of a multiple system that includes Alpha Centauri A and B. Approximately 30% of the stars in the Milky Way are multiples. Double Star in the Big Dipper This type forms when two protostars evolve side by side. One of them will be stronger and will begin to influence by gravity, creating a mass transfer. If one appears as a giant, and the other is a neutron star or black hole, then we can expect the emergence of an X-ray binary system, where the substance will be incredibly hot – 555,500 ° C. In the presence of a white dwarf, gas from the companion can flare up as a new one. Periodically, the gas of the dwarf accumulates and is able to instantly merge, because of which the star will explode in a type I supernova, which can eclipse the galaxy with its radiance for several months. Brightness Magnitude and luminosity are used to describe the brightness of stellar celestial bodies. The concept of size is based on the work of Hipparchus in 125 BC. He numbered star groups based on apparent brightness. The brightest are the first magnitude, and so on up to the sixth. However, the distance between the Earth and the star can affect visible light, so now they add a description of the actual brightness – an absolute value. It is calculated using the apparent magnitude as if it were 32.6 light-years from Earth. The modern magnitude scale rises above six and falls below one (the apparent magnitude of Sirius reaches -1.46). Below you can explore the list of the brightest stars in the sky from the perspective of an Earth observer. The luminosity of a star is the rate at which energy is emitted. It is measured by comparison with solar brightness. For example, Alpha Centauri A is 1.3 times brighter than the Sun. To make the same calculations in absolute value, you will have to take into account that 5 on the absolute scale is equal to 100 at the luminosity mark.Brightness varies with temperature and size. Color You may have noticed that stars differ in color, which actually depends on surface temperature. Each star has one color, but produces a wide spectrum, including all types of radiation. A variety of elements and compounds absorb and emit colors or wavelengths of color. By studying the stellar spectrum, you can figure out the composition. Surface temperature The temperature of stellar celestial bodies is measured in Kelvin with a zero temperature of -273.15 ° C. The temperature of a dark red star is 2500K, bright red – 3500K, yellow – 5500K, blue – from 10000K to 5000K. Temperature is partially influenced by mass, brightness and color. Size The size of stellar space objects is determined in comparison with the solar radius. Alpha Centauri A has 1.05 solar radii. Sizes may vary. For example, neutron stars are 20 km wide, while supergiants are 1,000 times the solar diameter. Size affects stellar brightness (luminosity is proportional to the square of the radius). In the lower figures, you can see a comparison of the sizes of stars in the Universe, including a comparison with the parameters of the planets of the solar system. Weight Here, too, everything is calculated in comparison with solar parameters. The mass of Alpha Centauri A is 1.08 solar Stars with the same masses may not converge in size. The mass of a star affects temperature. Magnetic field Stars generate magnetic fields. In the case of the Sun, researchers have found that its magnetic field is capable of reaching a very concentrated state in small areas, creating sunspots or eruptions – coronal mass ejections. The magnetic field depends on the speed of rotation (increases with increasing and decreases with deceleration). Metallicity Metallicity refers to the amount of heavy elements (heavier than helium). Based on metallicity, three stellar generations are distinguished. Until now, scientists have not been able to find the most ancient (III), completely devoid of metals. At the time of death, it was they who released the first heavy elements into space, from which generation II emerged. In a chain, their death led to the birth of Generation I (Sun). In the types of stars, the main role is played by the spectrum in the Morgan-Keenan system, which distinguishes 8 spectral classes. Each corresponds to a range of surface temperatures: O, B, A, F, G, K, M, and L (hottest to coldest). Each of them is divided into 10 more types (from 0 to 9). This system also takes into account luminosity. The largest and brightest have the smallest Roman numerals: Ia – bright supergiant, Ib – supergiant, II – bright giant, III – giant; IV is a subgiant and V is a main sequence or dwarf. The star has been in the main sequence for most of its existence. It is represented by the core, areas of radiation and convection, photosphere, chromosphere and corona. The core is the area where the nuclear fusion takes place, feeding the star. The energy of these reactions is transferred from the radiation zone to the outside. In convection, energy is transported by burning gases. If a star is more massive than the Sun, then it is convective in the core and radiates in the outer layers, and if it is inferior in massiveness, then it radiates in the core, and convective in the outer layers. interesting facts, list and description with photo
