91,155 90,000 Malaria has learned to hide from diagnostic tests
Researchers from the University of North Carolina, the World Health Organization, Brown University and the Ethiopian Institute of Public Health have discovered two genetic mutations that allow the malaria pathogen to go undetected by modern rapid diagnostic methods. This property has acquired some strains Plasmodium falciparum , which causes the most dangerous type of malaria.
Rapid diagnostic tests, which are part of a test-treat-track strategy, have become the mainstay of malaria control in Africa today. But researchers who have examined blood samples from more than 12,000 people in Ethiopia now believe these tests fail to detect nearly 10% of malaria cases caused by Plasmodium falciparum . “This is a major challenge to efforts to combat malaria and a reminder that pathogens are highly adaptable in order to survive,” said senior study author Jonathan B.Parr of the Department of Infectious Diseases, University of North Carolina School of Medicine. “There is an urgent need to strengthen surveillance in the Horn of Africa and create alternative diagnostics for malaria in these regions.”
There are now over twenty rapid tests for malaria. They are popular due to the fact that they can be used by untrained people and no special equipment is needed for this. These tests use finger or venous blood and take a total of 15–20 minutes to complete. The method is based on the detection of one or another antigen present in the malaria pathogen. In particular, a widespread test for the hrp2 protein, which is localized in several compartments of the malaria parasite cell, including the cytoplasm. A significant amount of protein is secreted by the parasite into the host’s blood, due to which the antigen can be detected in erythrocytes, blood serum, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid and even in urine.
The research team collected blood samples from 12,572 people on the Ethiopian border with Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan and analyzed them using rapid tests, PCR diagnostics, hypersensitive immunoassays and next-generation sequencing methods.Scientists have discovered P. falciparum strain , which lacks the hrp2 protein gene and the related hrp3 protein gene. Due to this, such malaria plasmodia elude detection with a rapid test and can only be detected by examining a blood sample under a microscope. It appears that strains lacking these genes spread rapidly.
Jonathan Parr says: “We have found clear evidence that parasites along Ethiopia’s borders with Sudan and Eritrea have recently evolved to avoid detection with rapid malaria testing.False negative results, which have become common in many places, lead to misdiagnosis and death from malaria without timely treatment. ” Ethiopian doctors were forced to change the rapid tests used in these areas. The World Health Organization has recommended that all malaria-endemic countries monitor the spread of plasmodium malaria strains capable of escaping express diagnostics based on hrp2 and 3.

90,000 Popular Universities in Slovakia for International Students
Although Slovakia is much less visited than its more touristy neighbors, Slovakia is an amazing country full of natural landscapes, beautiful mountains, mysterious caves, medieval castles and magnificent architecture – among many other lesser-known gems of this unusual area, the beaten paths of a small Central European state.
What’s more, the Slovak economy has grown rapidly since it joined the EU over fifteen years ago, making the country an increasingly attractive destination for international students and prospective degree seekers.
It is important to note that Slovak universities operate in accordance with the standardized ECTS – European Credit Transfer System, which makes it even easier for students from other European countries to attend local universities (more on the website: albion-school-slovakia.com). Most faculties require 30 ECTS credits per semester, which can be challenging for some students, some of whom turn to the undergraduate essay writing service to get help with essays or assignments under tight deadlines.
In most cases, foreign students must meet the same conditions as Slovak applicants, apart from holding a temporary residence permit “for study purposes” provided by the Slovak embassy in the country of origin. If you are thinking about studying in Slovakia but still haven’t decided, here are some affordable Slovak universities for international students.
