Wagner College Restart Plan – Spring 2021 –
Dear Students,
I hope this message finds you and your families safe and well. I am pleased to share important updates on the College’s academic plan for the 2020-2021 school year from the Office of the Provost. Please note that the College will be releasing our full Restart Plan to the community next Wednesday, July 22nd. That plan will include extensive detail about the College’s efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of the campus community in the year ahead to complement the academic information shared below.
OUR ACADEMIC PLAN
These plans are based on federal, state, and local regulations and guidance that we have at this time, as well as public health recommendations. As the situation with COVID-19 is fluid, they are subject to change by the time our community returns to campus in August. Additional details will be provided in the weeks to come from the Office of the Provost.
COURSE DELIVERY
The delivery of graduate and undergraduate classes will happen in a variety of ways to reduce the density in classrooms – in-person, remote, or a hybrid approach. By late July, student schedules will indicate how each class will be presented (in-person, remote, or hybrid), and the faculty teaching each class will follow-up with their students to explain the details of the course schedule further. Some examples of the hybrid approach are a Tuesday/Thursday class in which half the class meets in-person on Tuesday and the other half meets in-person on Thursday or a one-week in-person, two weeks remote approach. Some faculty may have less frequent face-to-face meetings than normal, focusing only on aspects of their curriculum in which in-person interaction is needed to be effective.
Classes will end at the Thanksgiving break. Final examinations will be given remotely during the week of November 30, 2020. Classes will be held on Labor Day and Columbus Day, as well as the day after Columbus Day. Students will have an opportunity to review their schedules, see the planned delivery methods, and make changes prior to the start of the semester or before the add/drop deadline at 4:30 p. m. September 1. You should check “MyWagner” for your schedules.
For students who do not wish to attend courses that have an in-person component, there will be online and remote options. The student will have the option to change their schedule to exclusively remote courses if the desired courses are available; however, not all courses will be available remotely. Students should consult with their advisors to be sure that any schedule changes keep them on track for graduation.
Faculty have been engaging in additional training for remote and online course delivery. That training will continue throughout the summer.
Wagner College students will continue to be offered the same quality faculty, classes, and support either virtually or in person. The College has been and is continuing to conduct additional training to faculty and has invested in new resources in order to meet students’ needs while mitigating the risk of COVID-19 transmission in our community.
CHANGES TO THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR
We have developed a 2020–2021 academic calendar that allows us to maintain a robust residential learning environment, while keeping the health and safety of our community front and center. Further information on the academic calendar can be found on the Registrar’s webpage.
FALL SEMESTER
To do this, we will modify our typical calendar. For the fall semester, we will start classes on August 24, eliminate breaks, finish on-campus instruction by Thanksgiving, and hold finals remotely. These changes enable us to have a full 15-week semester, to ensure we maintain a rigorous academic experience. By adapting the calendar in this way, we eliminate the need for students to leave and return to campus after Thanksgiving Break. Back-and-forth travel of this kind would unnecessarily create an opportunity of spreading the coronavirus on our campus.
WINTER TERM AND SPRING SEMESTER
There will be an optional online Winter Term that will start in mid-December and end in mid-January. Students will be able to take 1-2 courses during this term. This will allow students to reduce their spring semester workload or accelerate their progress towards their degrees.
The spring calendar will include 14 weeks of on-campus instruction and one week of off-campus finals, with no Spring Break, but may be altered depending on the path of the virus.
LEARNING REMOTELY
We understand that some students may need to remain home for a variety of reasons, particularly international students whose visas are delayed. If you are interested in learning remotely for the fall semester, please contact the Office of the Registrar at [email protected] by Friday, July 24. We are working to ensure that students who want to learn remotely will be able to take a full course load and make progress toward the completion of their degree requirements. Please note that the online curriculum will likely not be as comprehensive as that available to the residential students. The deadline for notifying the Registrar is July 24.
CLASSROOMS, LABORATORIES AND STUDIOS
Our Campus Operations Department is re-configuring each classroom, laboratory and studio to ensure that students and faculty can work together while maintaining at least six feet of physical distancing.
The College is investing in enhanced computer and audio-visual technology to facilitate communication in the classroom even while students and faculty are wearing face coverings.
Desks will be spaced at 6-foot intervals to maintain physical distance. This will restrict the number of people in any one classroom, based on classroom size. The College will utilize the largest classrooms available whenever possible.
OFFICE HOURS AND ADVISING
Faculty will continue to hold regular office hours to work with students one on one and in small groups. These meetings will take place via Zoom to maintain physical distancing. Advising and other appointments with academic offices will be shifted to virtual meetings.
STUDENTS WHO NEED TO MISS CLASS DUE TO ILLNESS
Because the College is asking anyone who is feeling ill to stay home, students who miss class due to illness will be able to work with their faculty so their absence does not interfere with their progress or standing in the course. A student should plan to communicate immediately with their faculty should they need to stay home due to illness or because they’ve been instructed to self-isolate and are unable to attend remotely.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
We know that it might not be possible for our international first-year students and returning students to come to campus this fall. We strongly encourage these students to enroll in Wagner courses remotely. Many courses will be available remotely this fall. We are working on issues related to time-zone scheduling so that students will have the opportunity to study remotely, no matter where they are.
ADDITIONAL ACADEMIC EXPERIENCES
Academic spaces such as computer labs and the library will follow physical-distancing protocol with details to be determined. Many library resources will continue to be available digitally.
It is still to be determined how musical ensembles and courses that require group singing or instrument playing will be conducted. Virtual options are being explored, but no decisions have been made at this time.
How student-teaching, internships, observations, and clinical experiences will be conducted will be determined by state guidelines and the College’s partners in those placements. The College is exploring virtual opportunities enabling students to fulfill those requirements in the event in-person placements are not available.
Again, please look out for a further message next Wednesday about the College’s comprehensive restart plan.

Diana Nosyreva became a fellow of the Richard Wagner Foundation
4th year student of the Kaliningrad Regional College of Music named after S. V. Rachmaninova Diana Nosyreva (class of the teacher of the Honored Artist of Russia Galina Vasilievna Mizina) became a fellow of the Richard Wagner Foundation and took part in the world famous Opera Festival in Bayreuth (Germany).
The Wagner Foundation awarded a young Kaliningrad woman for her successes and vocal achievements – Diana is a laureate of the All-Russian and International music competitions. In addition to the opportunity to watch world-class operas, Diana Nosyreva took part in one of the concerts of the Foundation’s fellows, representing about 30 countries in Europe and the world.
Diana herself shared her impressions of participation in the world famous Wagner Festival in Bayreuth:
image 1 “In most opera houses, summer is a vacation time, and in Bayreuth life is just beginning … and Wagner lovers from all over the world have been waiting for the coveted ticket for years, but thanks to my teacher Mizina Galina Vasilievna, as well as one of the leaders of the R. Wagner Foundation – Stefan Specht and the entire Wagner Society, I still managed to get a scholarship to this festival. This scholarship is given only once in a lifetime to young, up-and-coming musicians in order to introduce them to the high art of Richard Wagner. This year, students from more than 30 countries of the world have the opportunity to watch operas for free at the Bayreuth Wagner Theater itself.
I was lucky enough to attend three productions: “The Flying Dutchman”, “Parsifal” and “Death of the Gods”. They were magnificent, the sound of the orchestra fell into the most hidden corners of the auditorium, and the acoustics as a whole were amazing: the theater was so adapted to Wagner’s opera productions. And the hall is as if created for vocalists, wherever the soloist stands – in the corner of the stage or on the 4th floor of the huge scenery – the whole hall will hear him. And even the predominantly postmodern, not always understandable direction, which I was able to contemplate, was not able to cancel the general atmosphere of Wagner’s plan, it struck me very much . .. The scope and grandeur of the meaning that he conveys through music, I will remember for many more years. I can say that Richard Wagner has acquired another admirer of his music, albeit in the person of just a student of a music college. “

Hitler between Wagner and Tchaikovsky | Culture and Lifestyle in Germany and Europe | DW
Adolf Hitler chose Nuremberg in 1933 as the venue for the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP). Known for its traditions since the Middle Ages, the city was to become a spectacular backstage for the annual mass performance and play in it the role of the leading center of German economy, art and culture. Opera was of particular importance in the party performances of Hitler and his propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, who in the “Third Reich” oversaw censorship, cinema, music, theater and other arts.
The exhibition “Hitler.Macht.Oper” explores the Nazi use of opera as a propaganda tool. The exposition, prepared by the Documentary Center on the territory of the congresses of the NSDAP (Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelände), presents more than 350 exhibits, including original audio recordings and footage of archival chronicles, scientific texts, collages, eyewitness accounts and stage reconstructions. Over the past 30 years, the exhibition has been the largest contemporary exhibition of its kind on the role of musical theater during the time of National Socialism.
Meistersingers of Nuremberg
The opera “Meistersingers of Nuremberg” by Richard Wagner, a musical odyssey lasting four and a half hours, has become a favorite of the National Socialists. The premiere took place in March 1933 at the Berlin State Opera on the occasion of the founding of the Third Reich. In the interpretation of the Nazis, Meistersinger Hans Sachs personified a genius creator and patriot who serves his people and his race. The music from this opera is featured in Leni Riefenstahl’s propaganda film Triumph des Willens from 1935, which was filmed at the Nazi Party Congress of many thousands in 1934 in Nuremberg.
After the release of the film, the monumental production of “The Meistersingers of Nuremberg” opened the next party congress at the Nuremberg Opera House. The performers were personally selected by Hitler. The play was staged by Nazi director, costume designer, designer and architect Benno von Arent. The show became the standard for all subsequent performances in the musical theater of the Third Reich.
IX Congress of the NSDAP (“Congress of Labor”) in Nuremberg, 1937
As indicated at the exhibition “Hitler. Power. Opera”, Hitler himself ordered the reconstruction of the Nuremberg Opera in 1934, which consolidated its symbolic meaning. Architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg was tasked with purging the modernist building of its avant-garde architecture and creating a restrained and brutal interior that reflects the theater’s function as a framing for art and politics.
The annual party congresses were held each time under a new motto: in 1933 the “Victory Congress” was held, in 1936 – the “Honor Congress”. The conventions were held under the strictest regulations using typical theatrical means, including powerful spotlights, music and decorations. Composer Friedrich Jung was commissioned to create a monumental piece for the 1939 party convention. However, the order was soon canceled – at first without explanation. A few days later, the Second World War broke out with the invasion of Poland.
Anti-Semitic Wagner and the Nazi Opera
Hitler was a big fan of Richard Wagner, who was known for his anti-Semitism. The question of whether it is permissible to perform Wagner’s works with a clear conscience remains unanswered today. Wagner was not a Nazi, but not only did he not hide his anti-Semitism, but also actively promoted, in particular, in his theses “Judaism in Music” published by him in 1850.
Meistersingers of Nuremberg at the Bayreuth Festival 2017
Hitler was a big opera fan and went to performances almost every day while in Vienna. In his autobiographical pamphlet Mein Kampf, he describes his first encounter with the opera Lohengrin at the age of 13 as a turning point in his life. For his entourage in the leadership of the NSDAP, the dictator liked to put on a disc with a recording of Wagner’s opera Rienzi, in which an Italian nationalist rebelled against the corrupt elite of Rome. As in the case of the Meistersingers, we are talking about the great savior of the people.
Degenerate music
In 1938, the National Socialists organized the Reichsmusiktage, a propaganda festival of nationalist music in Düsseldorf, at which the Hitler-sponsored youth choir and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra performed. At the same time, the exhibition “Degenerate Music” was launched, organized in the likeness of the notorious exhibition “Degenerate Art” held six months earlier. The exhibition branded the “foreign to German culture” music of Jewish composers such as Arnold Schoenberg and Kurt Weill, and African American jazz. The role of the representative of German culture outside the “Third Reich” was assigned to Wagner’s operas.
In solitude, however, the self-proclaimed leader of the German people loved to listen to disgraced music: in the collection of his gramophone records, discovered in 2007, there were recordings of works by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Alexander Borodin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, in the jargon of the Nazis, “subhuman”.On one of the records, Tchaikovsky’s music sounds enchantingly performed by the violin virtuoso Bronislav Guberman, a Polish Jew.

Bodybuilding Perfection
Arno Brecker was Hitler’s favorite sculptor. At the exhibition “Obedient Art” in Bochum, his sculpture “The Decathlete” and the painting “Ruhr Basin” by Konrad Felixmüller, which the Nazis considered “degenerate”, meet.As art critic Max Imdahl explains, in contrast to the “impeccability of bodybuilding” reflected in Brecker’s work, the painting “The Ruhr Pool” shows the emaciated bodies of workers.

The horrors of reality and Nazi propaganda for a prosperous world
A little boy walks past human corpses lying on the side of the road. The photograph was taken in 1945, shortly after the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp by the Americans. In the exhibition hall next to this photograph hangs propaganda posters “Healthy Parents – Healthy Children” and “Painting of a Family” by artist Hans Schmitz-Wiedenbrück.

False idyll
Painting “Peasant women returning from the field” by Leopold Schmutzler, “Plowing” by Paul Junghans and “Peasant meal” by Herman Otto Heuer demonstrate a deceitful socialist language that had nothing in common with reality. “Real” rural life was one of the main motives of the Nazis, who praised the agrarian society.

Fighting on the high seas
Klaus Bergen’s painting “In the area of hostilities in the Atlantic”. This artist was included by Adolf Hitler in the list of the most valuable artists for Germany. Waves are raging, the ship makes its way through the sea foam straight to the illuminated sky. Clouds accentuate the drama and romance of the script. The meaning of the picture is clear: the sea is not a place for battles, but an odyssey for real heroes.

Embellished Art
Is National Socialist Art Progressive? Art critics believe that it was far behind the current trends of its time. While modernist artists questioned painting as a copy of reality, Hermann Otto Hoyer turned to crude realism. The 1935 Peasant Meal shows one of the Nazis’ favorite motifs: the German family.
