Specialized Training: Volleyball Position Camp
For athletes looking to enhance their skills in specific positions, Whitworth offers a 3-day Volleyball Position Camp. This advanced camp focuses on three key positions:
- Hitting
- Setting
- Defense
The camp structure includes specialized training in the chosen position each morning, followed by combined position drills and full games in the afternoons and evenings. This intensive approach aims to provide exponential growth in the player’s chosen position, equipping them with enhanced skills and confidence.
The Volleyball Position Camp is scheduled for July 9-11, 2021, and is open to girls aged 14-18 years old. It offers an overnight option with check-in at 12:30 pm on the first day and a closing program from 7:30-8:00 pm on the last day.
Intro to Volleyball Day Camp: Building a Strong Foundation
Whitworth University recognizes the importance of proper technique and form from the very beginning of a player’s journey. The Intro to Volleyball Day Camp is specifically designed for younger and beginning volleyball players, typically girls aged 8-12 years old.
This camp focuses on reinforcing accurate techniques and laying a solid foundation for future excellence. The NBC Staff works closely with campers to ensure they learn skills correctly from the start, avoiding the need for difficult retraining later in their volleyball careers.
The Intro Volleyball Junior Day Camp is scheduled for July 10-12, 2021, running daily from 9:00 am to noon. Check-in time is at 8:30 am on the first day, and participants are required to bring a signed Medical Release Waiver, athletic shoes, and a water bottle.
Rigorous Training Schedule and Engaging Evening Programs
Whitworth’s volleyball camps are known for their intense and comprehensive training schedules. A typical day at the camp includes:
- Morning sessions focusing on precision passing, serving, attacking, and rotation
- Afternoon sessions dedicated to 6v6 drills, games, and fundamental skill work
- Evening sessions covering digging, blocking, and principles of 3v3 volleyball
In addition to the rigorous training, the camps feature engaging evening programs designed to motivate and inspire campers. These programs include:
- Motivational speakers
- Skits
- Music
- High-energy entertainment
The evening programs are aimed at encouraging campers to strive for their best and develop not only as athletes but also as individuals.
Accommodation and Roommate Arrangements
For overnight camps, Whitworth University provides accommodation on its picturesque 200-acre campus. Roommate requests need to be made before the camp begins. If no preference is specified, campers are matched with others of the same gender and similar age.
To request a specific roommate or make any changes to accommodation arrangements, campers or their guardians can contact [email protected].
NBC Leadership Training and Player Advancement
A unique aspect of Whitworth’s volleyball camps is the inclusion of NBC Leadership Training and Player Advancement in the evening program. This component focuses on developing the mental and leadership aspects of the game, complementing the physical and technical training received during the day.
The leadership training aims to equip players with skills that extend beyond the volleyball court, fostering personal growth and character development. This holistic approach to athlete development sets Whitworth’s camps apart from many other volleyball training programs.
Campus Facilities and Environment
Whitworth University’s campus provides an ideal setting for volleyball camps. The 200-acre campus, characterized by its red brick buildings and tall pines, offers a beautiful and inspiring environment for athletes to train and develop their skills.
The volleyball facilities at Whitworth are well-equipped to handle the demands of intensive training camps. Players have access to modern courts and training equipment, ensuring they can practice and play in conditions that promote skill development and performance improvement.
Are campus tours available for prospective students attending the volleyball camps? While not explicitly mentioned in the camp information, many universities offer campus tours for prospective students. Interested campers or their parents should contact the Whitworth University admissions office to inquire about potential tour opportunities during their time on campus.
Safety and Medical Considerations
The safety and well-being of campers are paramount at Whitworth’s volleyball camps. All participants in the Intro Volleyball Junior Day Camp are required to bring a signed Medical Release Waiver. This requirement likely extends to all camp programs, ensuring that the staff is aware of any medical conditions or considerations for each participant.
Does the camp have medical staff on-site? While not explicitly stated in the provided information, most reputable sports camps, especially those offering overnight programs, typically have medical staff available to address any health concerns or emergencies that may arise during the camp. Prospective campers and their families should inquire about specific medical provisions when registering for the camp.
Nutritional Support for Athletes
Given the intense nature of the training schedule, proper nutrition is crucial for campers to maintain their energy levels and recover effectively. The sample daily schedule indicates that meals are provided for overnight campers, with specific times allocated for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Are special dietary requirements accommodated? While not explicitly mentioned in the provided information, many university camps are equipped to handle various dietary needs and restrictions. Campers with specific dietary requirements should contact the camp organizers in advance to discuss their needs and ensure appropriate accommodations can be made.
Technology and Video Analysis
In today’s tech-savvy sports world, many high-level training camps incorporate video analysis and other technological tools to enhance player development. Does Whitworth’s volleyball camp utilize video analysis or other advanced training technologies? While not specified in the provided information, this could be an important question for serious athletes looking to gain a competitive edge through their camp experience.
Post-Camp Support and Follow-Up
The impact of a volleyball camp can extend well beyond the days spent on campus. Do Whitworth’s volleyball camps offer any post-camp support or resources for continued skill development? This could include follow-up training plans, online resources, or opportunities for campers to connect with coaches for additional guidance after the camp concludes.
College Recruitment Opportunities
For high school athletes attending the camps, particularly those in the 14-18 age group, college recruitment might be a consideration. Does attendance at Whitworth’s volleyball camps provide any advantages or exposure for potential college recruitment? While not explicitly stated, many university-hosted camps offer opportunities for talented players to be noticed by college coaches, either from the host institution or other attending programs.
Prospective campers interested in college recruitment opportunities should inquire about any showcase events or evaluation sessions that might be part of the camp program.
Skill Level Assessment and Personalized Feedback
To maximize the benefit of the camp experience, many athletes seek personalized feedback on their performance and areas for improvement. Do Whitworth’s volleyball camps include individual skill assessments or personalized feedback sessions? This type of individualized attention can be invaluable for players looking to identify and address specific aspects of their game that need improvement.
While the camp information doesn’t explicitly mention individual assessments, the specialized nature of the Position Camp suggests that personalized instruction is a key component of the program. Prospective campers should inquire about the level of individual attention and feedback they can expect to receive during the camp.
Cultural and Team-Building Activities
Volleyball is not just about individual skills; it’s also a team sport that requires strong communication and cooperation. Do Whitworth’s volleyball camps incorporate team-building exercises or cultural activities to foster camaraderie among campers? While the sample schedule focuses primarily on volleyball-specific training, many successful camps include activities designed to develop teamwork, leadership, and social skills alongside athletic abilities.
The mention of team discussions in the evening schedule suggests that there is some focus on team dynamics and collective growth. Prospective campers interested in a well-rounded experience should inquire about any additional team-building or cultural activities that might be part of the camp program.
Parent Involvement and Observation Opportunities
For many young athletes, parental support plays a crucial role in their sporting journey. Do Whitworth’s volleyball camps offer opportunities for parents to observe training sessions or participate in any camp activities? While the schedule mentions a Parent Orientation (with timing to be determined), it’s unclear whether there are additional opportunities for parent involvement throughout the camp.
Parents interested in being more involved or observing their child’s progress should inquire about any specific policies or events that allow for parent participation or observation during the camp.
Preparation and Conditioning Recommendations
Given the intensive nature of the training schedule, proper preparation can greatly enhance a camper’s experience and reduce the risk of injury. Do Whitworth’s volleyball camps provide any pre-camp conditioning recommendations or preparation guidelines? While not mentioned in the provided information, many high-level sports camps offer guidance on how athletes can best prepare themselves physically and mentally for the demands of the camp experience.
Prospective campers, especially those attending the more advanced programs, should inquire about any recommended pre-camp conditioning or preparation activities to ensure they can fully benefit from and enjoy the intensive training experience.

Get ready to have a great time! You will learn a lot about volleyball in a short period of time! I have found it useful if you show up in relatively decent shape and most important, don’t compare yourself to others in the clinic. If you feel intimidated, the learning process shuts down. I do an excellent job of matching each player with drills and competition suited for the appropriate levels of play.
There will be young players in attendance as well as adults. I will group you by age and skill level an hour into the clinic — I do it for safety reasons and to make you feel more comfortable. The coaching staff will be watching each individual execute the skills during “Survivor”… this is where we enforce the teaching cycle.
Please remember it is not important who you play against or who you play with, all that matters is how you are performing each skill during “Survivor.”
Players will want to bring: Lunch, Snacks, Beverages an extra T-shirt, knee pads, water and other personal items you may need.
After you complete the registration process, I will send you an e-mail confirming your participation.
I look forward to working with you and making you a better volleyball Player!

Dr. Bruce Atkinson joined the Delaware State University staff as head women’s volleyball coach on Feb. 11, 2019.
Atkinsons 11-year career as a college head coach is highlighted by a 217-116 overall record (.652 win percentage), multiple conference championships, five Coach-of-the-Year awards and six 20-win seasons.
Atkinson most recently served as head womens volleyball coach at Winthrop (S.C.) University from 2013 to 2018. His 98 wins at Winthrop are third-most in the 32-year history of the program.
From 2010 to 2013, Atkinson was head womens volleyball coach at Towson University in Maryland. In 2012, he led the Tigers to the Colonial Athletic Association championship and a 25-4 overall record, including a 12-0 mark in conference regular season matches. He earned two CAA Coach-of-the-Year awards (2011, 2012) while at Towson.
Prior to his tenure at Towson, Atkinson was head womens volleyball coach at the University of Hawaii at Hilo from 2007 to 2010. In three seasons, he was Pacific West Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 2007 and 2009, and led the Vulcans at a 69-13 overall record (.812), including a 39-5 mark in conference play (.872).
Atkinson began his college coaching career as head womens volleyball coach at the University of Texas at Brownsville, where he led the Ocelots to a Red River Athletic Conference championship and was named league Coach-of-the-Year after posting a 27-10 overall record and 10-1 conference mark during the 2006-07 season.
Dr. Atkinson is recognized nationally as a respected teacher, leader, player developer and program builder in womens college volleyball, said Gines. Throughout his career, he has developed plans for player development, recruited for attitude and ability, cultivated team chemistry and built programs into conference championship competitors. I am confident that Dr. Atkinson is right leader to rebuild the Hornets volleyball team.
The Delaware State volleyball team was 2-27 overall and winless in 10 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matches during the 2018 campaign. In the last six seasons, the Hornets have a 12-153 won-loss record (6-64 MEAC) and have failed to qualify for the conference championship tournament since 2010.
Atkinson earned a bachelors degree in Physical Education (Scientific Emphasis) from Brigham Young University-Hawaii in 1993, and a Doctor of Chiropractic from Southern California University of Health Sciences in 1996.
He is a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (C.C.S.P.) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S), in addition to being CPR/AED Certified for Adult and Pediatric.
Atkinson is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, National Strength and Conditioning Association and American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.
A native of Merced, California, Atkinson is married to Junae Kekauoha.
Im grateful to Delaware State and Dr. Gines for the opportunity to lead the Hornets volleyball program, said Atkinson. I am extremely impressed with the vision of the university and the athletics department. The challenge of rebuilding the program and working with our dedicated student-athletes and staff is exciting to me and Im very much looking forward to this new chapter in my career.
What Others Are Saying About Dr. Bruce Atkinson
The hiring of Dr. Atkinson is a tremendous move for Delaware State. Ive known Bruce for nearly 15 years and have admired everything about his coaching career. Hes a great teacher and recruiter, runs an amazing system and knows what it takes to build a championship program. He also has solid core values, which have no doubt contributed greatly to his success.

90,000 Fun starts at the summer camp. Scenario “fun starts” for primary school
November 17, 2013
Fun starts in the summer camp have already become traditional competitions. To participate in them, a team of active guys who are infected with a sports spirit is always recruited. But the popularity of the games does not relieve the organizers of the responsibility for holding them.
Scenario selection for sports competitions
Fun starts are held in the summer camp according to a pre-planned scenario. It will depend on the imagination of the organizers. But quite often, fun starts for children are organized according to the plot of the Olympic Games. Girls and boys who are not involved in sports can play the role of ancient Greek gods: open the competition and wish good luck to the participants. Also, the funny starts are diversified by the humorous performances of the teams. They can take place according to the principle of representing teams in the well-known KVN game.
Ball games
Fun starts in the summer camp are good because they require little sports equipment, and they can be carried out in the fresh air. The most popular competitions are, of course, ball games. There are many different types of competitions. Volleyballs can be used for competitions that have elements of volleyball or football. Throwing and dribbling a basketball will be a little harder. But it can be used to compete with basketball elements. The old pioneerball, beloved by all children, is also perceived by children with great joy. In addition, there is this type of competition: the team is lined up against each other, the ball must be passed on outstretched arms overhead. Due to its weight, the basketball will add complexity to the competition. You can use a rugby ball. Running Competitions
Each competition is a time trial. And the traditional competition is running. To make it interesting, you can add, for example, a baton. This discovery will help to attract the entire team to participate and make the competition more interesting. In addition, it is often advisable to add obstacles to the relay during this summer camp event. You can, for example, place pins throughout the course. The runner must go around each without knocking down a single one.
Sports competitions with rope
Fun starts in the summer camp cannot do without a rope.If it is not difficult for the girls to jump over the rope the required number of times, then for many boys this task will be unusual. If the rope is twisted by two people, and the third is jumping over it, the task will be more difficult. In addition, some conditions can complicate the task: jump only on one leg or with crossed legs.
Sports competitions with hoop
Very often a hoop is used for fun starts. If twisting it around the waist is not difficult, then you can add a few more hoops or twist the hoop on your arm.
The fun starts will be remembered by all participants and will add variety to the life of the summer camp. And in order for games and contests to be more mobile and interesting, it is imperative to add music. And, of course, it is simply necessary to interest the participants in prizes, special certificates or cool medals.

Event progress
The presenter greets the audience and invites the teams. To the sounds of solemn music and applause from spectators-fans from opposite ends of the field, teams enter and take their places of honor in the front row. The host introduces and invites the jury to take their places. The chairman of the refereeing team explains the rules of the competition, which must be adhered to by the members of both teams; explains on what scale, how the participants of the competition will be evaluated and wants the teams to show their maximum abilities and capabilities and win.
1. Warm up.
Each team defends its emblem, motto and addresses a short greeting to the opponents. (The following are approximate team names, slogans, and greetings.)
Command. “Energy”.
Motto: “Only forward and only together. Energy in us is two hundred percent! ”
Greeting message to the opposing team: “We wish you not to lose all your optimism on the way to the finish line!”
Team “Optimists”.
Motto: “Our motto is simple – we cannot be bypassed, even half a meter, but we are ahead!”
Greetings to the opposing team: “There are two hundred energies when you are all together. But it is worth dropping out alone – all chances are reduced to zero. Let your quantity not override your quality! .. ”
2. Personal acquaintance.
The jury and all those present got acquainted with the emblems, mottos and greetings of the teams. There is only one little thing left: each team member must now personally introduce themselves. He must do this as follows: both teams in full force go to the starting lane. Ahead, about fifty meters away, there is an impromptu mountain. There is an inscription on it: “Were here… “Further, the space is divided by a line.
The teams are given a bag. At the signal, the first team members should get into their bag and jump to the “mountain”. Without getting out of the bag, with chalk or a felt-tip pen, already prepared in advance and located in the same place, write your name in the allotted column, for example: “Kolya”. Further, leaving the chalk in the same place, the competitor must turn around and quickly jump in the bag to his team, get out of the bag and pass it to the next player. He climbs into the bag and rides in it to the “mountain”, writes his name and returns in the same way…
The first team to complete the “personal introduction procedure” wins.
While the jury is calculating the results of the first two stages of the competition, the presenter gives each team a riddle, which can fill the gap.
Riddles to the “Energy” team:
What will the beginning of a sporting event be called in the language of athletes? (Start.)
This horse does not eat oats,
Two wheels instead of legs.
Sit astride and race on it,
Only better to drive… (Bike.)
We are nimble sisters,
Craftswomen run fast.
In the rain – we lie,
We run into the snow,
This is our mode … (Skis.)
Riddles for the “Optimist” team:
What is the name of the end of a sporting event in the language of athletes? (The finish.)
I have guys
Two silver horses.
I drive both at once,
What kind of mine do I have? (Skates.)
Green meadow,
One hundred benches around,
Gate to gate
The people are running around… (Stadium.)
The jury will announce the results of the previous two tasks.
3. Collective race of centipedes.
The upcoming race is unusual in that the entire team is participating. Grasping the player in front of the player with their arms around the waist, they run after the leader to the designated place, for example, the same impromptu mountain. Run around it and come back. At the same time, it is very important not to bump your heads against the opposing team, not to stumble and not make a “bunch of small things”.
That team of centipedes, which without hesitation and hesitation will go around the “mountain” and return first back to the starting position, is rightfully considered the winner.
The presenter, together with the fans, can cheer up the lagging players with remarks something like this:
Faster, faster, centipedes,
A little more to the finish line! ..
or:
Centipede, move,
Another jerk … pull yourself up! ..
4. Competition of captains.
While the rest of the teams are resting from the exhausting race, the captains are preparing for a new type of competition. A peg of thirty centimeters is driven in about two meters from the player. The player must, from his place, put ten rings on the peg. The captains compete in turns. The order is determined by drawing lots. The one who will achieve the lowest result in this type of competition loses.
5. “Rope balls”
– the task is as follows: the players in front of the teams, upon a signal, must jump with the ball clamped by their ankles to the finish line; change the ball to a bouncing rope and return to the team by jumping over the bouncing rope. The following players of the teams take over the baton and jump to the finish line over the rope. Then they change it to a ball and return with the ball sandwiched between the ankles. The first team to complete the task wins.
The leader signals the start of the competition with a quatrain, the last words of which indicate the start of the start:
One, two, three, four, five,
We will play with you
Into the ball, funny, mischievous,
Let’s go, don’t stop! ..
During the meeting of the jury and summing up the results of the competition, the resulting pause is filled in by support groups. They show their pre-prepared numbers. Their performances are judged by audience applause.
6. Relay with the ball.
Teams line up. The first players pass the ball next until it hits the last. The last players, each running around their own chain, become the head of their teams and pass the ball to the players behind them. The ball again hits the last player in the chain, who must also run around it and become the head of the team, and so on.
The team whose players changed places earlier wins.
7. Running relay.
One of the players on each team holds the hoop upright on the ground. At the signal, the rest of the team members must slip through the hoop. The team that completes the task faster is considered the winner.
8. “Homework”
– team members must submit three amateur performances on a sports theme to the jury and spectators. This can be, for example, a gymnastic etude or a demonstration performance of hand-to-hand combat; funny and mischievous ditties; poetry; riddles; sports dances, etc.NS.
The jury evaluates the last tasks and summarizes the overall result of the competition. The winners are announced.

Sports game program “Merry Starts” for an event in summer camps
During summer camps, every day is dedicated to some holiday (for example, Neptune Day), I propose a scenario of a sports game program dedicated to the Day of Laughter.
Artist: Perevezentseva Galina Evgenievna, teacher of additional education MBOU DOD Center for children and youth tourism and excursions (young tourists) in Lukhovitsy.
Material Description:
I present to your attention the sports game program “Merry Starts”, which is aimed at organizing sports and leisure activities for children in summer camps.Development of interest in fun starts, outdoor games. This material will be useful for teachers – organizers of children’s leisure activities, counselors.
Age of children
8-13 years old.
Venue:
necessarily a green lawn.
Inventory:
gymnastic sticks, volleyball, hoops, cones, small plastic basins, small balls, jump ropes, plastic buckets.
Purpose:
Development of motor abilities in children through outdoor games.
Tasks:
1. Education of a culture of communication.
2. To foster the ability to interact with peers in groups based on the principles of mutual respect.
3. Removal of psychological tension.
Course of the event
All teachers and counselors leave (dressed as teenagers, with bows on their heads, if there are men, then a T-shirt, shorts and knee-highs on the head of a panama hat)
The teacher (disguised as a girl) builds teams for competitions.
Hello, participants of fun starts.
Today you are facing a very difficult task.
But we can handle it. To greet, the teams line up against each other.
Team up in one line!
(the team of teachers is fooling around, they don’t become, they don’t know how to get up and behave like our children)
At last they’ve built everyone, we need to say a greeting to the other team.
A referee is selected from each team who will count the points.
A cone is placed in front of each team at a distance of 4-5 m.
1.Warm up.
Each team member runs to the cone, runs around it and returns to his team, passes the move to another participant.
2. Transfer of an object.
The team is divided into pairs. Participants are holding 2 gymnastic sticks. A small ball lies on the sticks, which must be carried to the cone, bypass it and return back. Pass the sticks and ball to the next pair. You cannot pinch the ball between the sticks.
3. Come on overtake.
Jump ropes are issued to Teams. It is necessary to jump on the rope to the cone, at the cone there is a hoop, take it, twist it 5-6 times, then take the rope and jump to your team. Pass the rope to the next participant.
4. Who will eat faster.
Chairs are placed near the cones, a basin filled with water on them, and an apple in water. The task of the teams to the teachers is to run, and the children to jump (it will be funnier) to the chair and bite the apple without hands. And whose team the apple will end faster, she won this competition.
5. Hit the target.
At a distance of 6 m from the teams, there is a plastic bucket on a chair, each participant reaches the cone, takes the ball and throws it into the bucket. Which team hit the target the most and won.
6. Mini football.
Each team plays the way they can. The task is to score a goal for the opposing team. You cannot take the ball with your hands. But educators can fool around sometimes. To make it funnier.
Scoring. Rewarding. Tea drinking in the dining room.
You get positive for the whole day. I guarantee.Thank you for the attention.
