The U.S. men’s national soccer team has had a remarkable summer, defeating rival Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup.

Now, here comes the ultimate test of qualifying for the FIFA 2022 World Cup after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

On Thursday, Gregg Berhalter released the list of the 26 players he will use for the first three qualifying games in seven days.

The U.S. begins the final round of qualifying against host El Salvador on Sept. 2. The Americans will next face Canada on Sept. 5 in Nashville and then travel to Honduras for a Sept. 8 match.

“We have spent the last two years building the foundation and culture of the team for this moment,” Berhalter said. “World Cup qualifying is a grueling challenge that demands a complete group effort in order to be successful. We are confident in our ability to respond to the challenges that are presented along the way. ”

The roster will look to maximize on this summer’s success. However, it is a young one with just six players – Christian Pulisic, DeAndre Yedlin, Kellyn Acosta, Tim Ream, John Brooks and Galaxy midfielder Sebastian Lletget – having experience qualifying.

Lletget is one of nine MLS players selected, a group that includes the Seattle Sounders’ Cristian Roldan, who starred at El Rancho High in Pico Rivera.

The European contingent includes Sergiño Dest (Barcelona), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzing), Weston McKinnie (Juventus), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund) and Pulisic (Chelsea).

USA roster announced for 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup

CHICAGO – U. S. Beach Soccer Men’s National Team head coach Francis Farberoff has selected a 14-player roster that will represent the USA at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia from August 19-29.

The roster includes seven players with previous World Cup experience, highlighted by goalkeeper Chris Toth and forwards Alessandro Canale and Nick Perera, who will be appearing in their third FIFA Beach Soccer World Cups (2013 and 2019). David Mondragon, Jason Santos, Gabe Silveira and Lucas Roque also return from the 2019 World Cup team.

The roster includes 11 of the 12 players who helped the U.S. qualify for the World Cup by finishing second at May’s Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship in Costa Rica.

Gabe Silveira led the team in scoring with seven goals, followed by Canale with six.

Eight other U.S. players scored during qualifying: Nick Perera (four), Jason Santos (three), Nicolas Perea (three), Chris Toth (two), David Mondragon (two), Chris Albiston (two), Fredo Dilbert (two) and Conner Rezende (one).

Nick Perera is the USA’s all-time leading scorer with 103 tallies in 80 career games, including 41 at World Cup qualifying and seven in his two previous World Cups (two in 2019, five in 2013).

Canale has four World Cup goals (two in 2013, two in 2019) while Toth and Santos also scored one each in 2019.

Forward Tanner Akol, who scored 11 goals in the 2019 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship, returns to action after missing nearly two years with knee injuries. Akol suffered a torn ACL in summer 2019 during a game in El Salvador, forcing him to miss the 2019 World Cup. He injured his other knee in fall 2020 and did not recover in time for the 2021 qualifying tournament. Akol returned to competitive action for the first time at June’s 2021 North American Sand Soccer Championships in Virginia Beach, Va.

Goalkeeper Xavier Snaer-Williams will look to make his international debut.

Eight players played collegiately and earned degrees: Albiston (William & Mary), Canale (UC-San Diego), Nick Perera (UC-Santa Barbara), Nicholas Perea (Syracuse), Conner Rezende (Virginia / St. Francis) Santos (UC-Davis), Esteban Sapetnitzky (Clark / Babson) and Silveira (San Francisco State).

Francis Farberoff has played a role in all six U.S. teams at the Beach Soccer World Cup. He is the only player to appear in each of the USA’s first four Beach Soccer World Cups (2005, 2006, 2007, 2013) and served as an assistant coach in 2019.

Farberoff is assisted by former U.S. teammate Ben Astorga, who also played in the 2005 and 2006 World Cups. Astorga was head coach of Trinidad and Tobago at the 2017 Concacaf Beach Soccer Championship.

Assistant coach Morgan Church brings more than a decade of experience as a coach, technical director, instructor and administrator in the Southeast region. She will also serve as head coach of the U.S. Beach Soccer Women’s National Team at the Women’s Intercontinental Beach Soccer Cup, set to be played prior to the World Cup in Moscow.

FIFA increased rosters for the World Cup from 12 to 14, accounting for the special circumstances encountered by teams due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

USMNT World Cup qualifying squad: Berhalter’s September roster

In many ways, the U.S. World Cup qualifying team announced Thursday morning is the product of nearly four years of evolution, work and planning. It represents a long-awaited rebirth.

But the list of 26 men unveiled by coach Gregg Berhalter, like most national team squads, also is a reflection of a single moment in time. Short-term health, availability and form are always going to be a factor. New talent is often emerging. That’ll be especially relevant during the upcoming qualifying campaign, which features 14 matches across seven months and an unprecedented quartet of three-game, weeklong windows. It’ll be a test of resilience and depth.

That reality was amplified last week when Christian Pulisic, the UEFA Champions League winner who’s become the renewed U.S. national team’s most influential player, tested positive for the coronavirus. Vaccinated and symptom-free, the Chelsea forward still made the qualifying cut and so appears to have remained healthy and negotiated all required protocols. Berhalter said later Thursday that Pulisic is expected to fly to the U.S. this Sunday as long as he continues to test negative during and after clearing quarantine. But his potential arrival won’t necessarily mean he’s ready to play.

“It’s really too early to tell if he’ll be available for [any of the games]. We just don’t know right now. So it’s going to be a wait-and-see type of thing,” Berhalter said. “This is a COVID situation and there’s a lot of tests he needs to go through before he arrives. And then, even then, everyone handles it differently. Everyone responds to it differently. Everyone recovers from it differently, and that’s going to be the process that we’re looking at.”

Berhalter had no choice but to expect the unexpected, so he also left room for newcomers. Ricardo Pepi, an 18-year-old FC Dallas striker without a senior or U-23 cap, obviously missed out on all the buildup. But he’s got nine goals in 20 MLS matches, plays a position where Berhalter could use some help and is eligible for both the U. S. and Mexico. Waiting may not have been an option. Konrad de la Fuente, 20, is another somewhat unexpected inclusion. He had slipped toward the edge of national team picture after failing to find first-team minutes at Barcelona, but he’s made an impressive early impression at Olympique Marseille and surged back into contention.

The qualifying roster features 24 players (apart from Pepi and de la Fuente) who took part in the national team’s wildly successful summer, when it won the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup titles with almost entirely separate squads. That gold medal pedigree will be boosted by 10 men whose clubs have qualified for the group stage of this season’s UEFA Champions League, including Pulisic. But this U.S. team is still young, keeping with the theme of Berhalter’s rebuild. The average age is just a few days over 24, with 13 players 23 or younger. Only six have previous World Cup qualifying experience.

Now ranked 10th in the world by FIFA, the U. S. will gather in Nashville to begin training next week before flying to El Salvador, where it will open Concacaf’s eight-team, round-robin gantlet against La Selecta on Sept 2. The Americans then will return to Nashville to play Canada on Sept. 5. The window will close with an away game against Nations League semifinal foe Honduras in San Pedro Sula on Sept. 8. Only 23 players are eligible for each game-day roster.

The top three finishers in the Octagonal will qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The fourth-place team will enter a two-team intercontinental playoff for a final berth.

We are confident in our ability to respond to the challenges that are presented along the way.”

Berhalter took the job in December 2018 and has managed 35 games (winning 26) in seven countries, including three regional finals (winning two). He’s fielded nearly 100 players. It’s all led to this. Here’s the list of men who will start the process to get the U.S. back to the World Cup:

GOALKEEPERS

Ethan Horvath (Nottingham Forest), Zack Steffen (Manchester City), Matt Turner (New England Revolution)

These three were the obvious choices for the squad. But the starter isn’t.

For a while, Steffen appeared to have the No. 1 shirt locked up. He’s the most experienced goalie toward the top of Berhalter’s depth chart and has played (occasionally) and trained at a high level at Manchester City.

But Horvath made a significant statement with his Nations League heroics, and Turner has been brilliant week-in, week-out for New England. While Steffen and Horvath rested this summer, Turner backstopped the U.S. to the Gold Cup crown, yielding just one goal (a penalty kick) across six outstanding games. To top it off, he was named MVP of Wednesday night’s MLS All-Star Game after saving two Liga MX penalties in the shootout.

Who starts, and whether one goalie gets the call in all three games, will be one of the central questions of this qualifying window. The slight favorite might be Turner. He’s the one in form.

DEFENDERS

George Bello (Atlanta United), John Brooks (Wolfsburg), Sergiño Dest (Barcelona), Mark McKenzie (Genk), Tim Ream (Fulham), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Miles Robinson (Atlanta United), James Sands (New York City FC), DeAndre Yedlin (Galatasaray), Walker Zimmerman (Nashville SC)

The U.S. is pretty deep at center back, especially after Robinson cemented his Concacaf bona fides with an MVP-worthy Gold Cup performance (Mexico’s Héctor Herrera snatched the official honor). He could be Berhalter’s first choice to start alongside the veteran Brooks.

It’s unlikely the same pairing will be used three times in seven days, however, so expect Zimmerman to see the field. Ream, McKenzie and Sands, another Gold Cup revelation, provide depth and add to Berhalter’s options if he chooses to deploy only three in back. He tried that look multiple times this summer. Bayern Munich’s Chris Richards is probably the most significant omission.

There appear to have been a couple of tougher choices at outside back, and there’s less depth in those areas of the field. The absence of Reggie Cannon (Boavista) and Shaq Moore (Tenerife), who played well at the Gold Cup, suggest that Dest will stay on the right side. Yedlin is another option there. Fulham’s Robinson and Bello, who’s just 19, can play on the left.

MIDFIELDERS

Kellyn Acosta (Colorado Rapids), Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy), Weston McKennie (Juventus), Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders)

There’s no experimentation here. These are the midfielders who’ve earned Berhalter’s long-term trust, and they’ll be asked to shoulder a significant load. Acosta and Lletget are the only two players on the qualifying roster who were part of both the Gold Cup and Nations League triumphs.

Adams and Acosta are the top choices to play the central defensive role, with Sands available in a potential emergency. McKennie hasn’t played since the Nations League final and has endured an awkward start to the 2021–22 season. Transfer rumors are swirling, and he missed Juventus’s opener through suspension. But McKennie is a massive figure in Berhalter’s setup and likely will play a major role over the next two weeks.

Among the missing are promising Valencia prospect Yunus Musah, who’s been dealing with an ankle injury, as well as Eryk Williamson (Portland Timbers), Jackson Yuiell (San Jose Earthquakes) and Gianluca Busio (Venezia).

FORWARDS

Brenden Aaronson (Salzburg), Konrad de la Fuente (Marseille), Jordan Pefok (Young Boys), Ricardo Pepi (FC Dallas), Christian Pulisic (Chelsea), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund), Josh Sargent (Norwich City), Tim Weah (Lille)

Berhalter has a lot of options here, especially on the wings. But it’s still not clear when and whether a first-choice finisher will emerge.

With 16 caps, the 21-year-old Sargent has the most experience up top. His five goals aren’t a bad return, especially considering his age, but his last U.S. goal came back in November 2019. Berhalter has praised Sargent’s work rate and effort off the ball, and that may be enough considering the attacking talent behind and beside him. But goals would be nice. His pair for Norwich in Tuesday’s 6–0 EFL Cup rout of Bournemouth is a good sign.

Pepi and Pefok are additional options at striker. Columbus Crew veteran Gyasi Zardes, traditionally one of Berhalter’s go-to guys, is out with a hamstring injury, and Orlando City’s Daryl Dike also has been hurt. Matthew Hoppe, who made his U.S. debut at the Gold Cup and played well (usually in a wider role), is in limbo at Schalke 04 and also was omitted.

Pepi very well may get some minutes. Even if he does, however, he won’t be cap-tied to the U.S. The El Paso–born son of Mexican parents, Pepi actually could play in all three qualifiers and still have the option to switch thanks to recently enacted FIFA regulations. From the sound of it, though, he’s made his choice.

“I want to start by saying that I am a Mexican-American and that I am super proud of my heritage,” Pepi told FCDallas.com. “It’s something that will never be taken away from me, no matter what national team I play for. I made this decision because I felt the USA trusts me and I think that’s due to [USMNT coach] Gregg Berhalter and how he emphasized this to me. I had good talks with Gregg and I feel I can make an impact with the USA and help this national team really do something special now and in the future.”

Pepi has attended junior national team camps in both the U.S. and Mexico and was on the American squad at the 2019 U-17 World Cup.

The U.S.’s attacking strength is on the wings, with Pulisic and Reyna leading the way and Aaronson enjoying an excellent start to his season in Salzburg. The 20-year-old already has two goals and two assists for the Austrian champions.

The injured Paul Arriola (D.C. United) and striker-winger Nicholas Gioacchini (Caen), a Gold Cup reserve, didn’t make the squad.

US Women’s National Team player Crystal Dunn has gained confidence as an outspoken player since their 2019 World Cup win.

The Beatles arrived in Austin when the U.S. women’s national team debuted Q2 Stadium to the soccer world in the venue’s first-ever match on June 16 in a 2-0 win over Nigeria as part of Olympic buildup. The stakes rise at Q2 Stadium Oct. 7 when the U.S. men’s team plays a World Cup qualifying match against Jamaica.

It will be the first time the USMNT plays a World Cup qualifier in the state of Texas. The USMNT faces Jamaica on Sunday in Arlington in a quarterfinal matchup of the Gold Cup. The winner of that match plays at Q2 Stadium on July 29.

The New Kids on the Block arrive with renewed momentum and a group of young, hungry stars earning their stripes overseas, including UEFA Champions League champion Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams and Juventus midfielder, and Texas native, Weston McKinnie.

U.S. Soccer update: USWNT start The Olympics; USMNT advance at Gold Cup

Another one of those young stars is 18-year-old Gio Reyna. The son of Austin FC sporting director Claudio Reyna, Gio plays in Germany for Borussia Dortmund and helped the United States capture the CONCACAF Nations League title earlier this summer in a victory over Mexico in the final with Claudio in the stands.

“It’ll be amazing to watch (Gio) in this stadium. He was here for our home opener against San Jose, and he loved the facilities and the atmosphere,” Claudio Reyna told the American-Statesman hours before the official announcement. “Even their preparation leading up to the game will be here at our St. David’s Performance Center, and that will be great to have him around in the same time zone.”

Claudio was also a player for the USMNT. He admits that it is more nerve-wracking watching his son than it was as a player. The former midfielder spent time playing around the world in the most important leagues in soccer, including a stint with Manchester City before ending his career at New York Red Bulls. He also scored nine goals in 112 appearances in red, white and blue.

Reyna remembers the pressure the current crop of Americans will experience during 14 matches of World Cup qualifying, seven at home and seven on the road. The United States is in an “Octagonal” with seven other national teams including Mexico, Canada, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, Costa Rica and Jamaica. The match at Q2 on Oct. 7 will be the fourth of the re-formatted final round of CONCACAF qualification.

“(The players) will be feeling the importance of what it means to take three points at home. That’ll be their focus,” Claudio Reyna explained. “It is tough, however, because it is a season within a season since these guys will be playing for their club team.”

The leadership of Austin FC, and the city of Austin, feel like this milestone proves the Music Capital of the World is also a hotbed for soccer support. The atmosphere at Q2 Stadium has been raucous through four home matches and an exhibition against Liga MX side Tigres UANL, as well as that opener involving the USWNT. It also proves that the training facilities built 10 miles from the stadium that house the academy teams and senior squad sessions are world class.

“Those elements combined to build real excitement of what is going down here in Austin in soccer circles across America,” Claudio Reyna said. “For the U.S. men’s national team to choose Q2 Stadium for a qualifier is a special moment. It’s exciting and our players are going to need our support. The atmosphere in here will be amazing.”

The USMNT ties to Austin FC don’t stop with the Reyna family. The head coach of the United States is Gregg Berhalter. The former head coach of the Columbus Crew is the father of Austin FC midfielder Sebastian Berhalter and mentor of head coach Josh Wolff. Berhalter is clearly aware of the soccer culture building in Austin, driven by the excitement created by the city’s first major league sports franchise.

“What’s been happening in Austin the last couple years is extraordinary,” Gregg Berhalter said via press release. “It’s amazing the way the city has embraced the sport, the world-class facilities they have developed, and most importantly for us the atmosphere the fans create in the stadium. That’s precisely the type of environment we need for our home World Cup Qualifiers, and I know it’s something our players value and appreciate.”

U.S. Soccer expects a high demand for tickets to the Nov. 7 match against Jamaica. A weighted random draw for the opportunity to attend the match will be conducted at a later date. U.S. Soccer has used a similar procedure for tickets in the past for major matches for the USMNT and the USWNT.

“This is a historic moment for soccer fans and our Austin community alike,” Austin Mayor Steve Adler said. “The FIFA World Cup is the world’s largest sporting event, bar none, and its qualifying rounds garner a massive audience and make a lasting impression. USMNT roster for Concacaf World Cup qualifiers: Ricardo Pepi picks U.S. Soccer squad over Mexico

The United States men’s national team roster for next month’s World Cup qualifiers is here. The 26-player squad selected by manager Gregg Berhalter was announced Thursday. This is the first squad for the U.S. since winning both the Concacaf Nations League and the Gold Cup this past summer, and it included a big development. Ricardo Pepi, the talented 18-year-old striker of FC Dallas, has chosen the United States over Mexico and is part of this USMNT roster.

“This country has given my family so many opportunities and it really has helped me achieve my goals,” Pepi said in a release from FC Dallas. “I said that when I made this decision it would be with the heart. It’s been made with the heart. If I put that jersey on, I am fighting for it until I can’t fight anymore.”

The U.S. will open qualifying in Concacaf on Sept. 2 at El Salvador. The U.S. will then host Canada on Sept. 5 before traveling to Honduras on Sept. 8. The following international window will be in October. The matches against El Salvador and Honduras can be streamed live on Paramount+.

Despite not having a key player like Chris Richards, with his club career up in the air at Bayern Munich, this is still one of the most talented rosters we’ve seen for the USMNT . .. potentially the most talented ever.
There is no Yunus Musah for the U.S., but that shouldn’t be all that surprising. After suffering a ligament injury in his ankle during Valencia’s preseason, he’s just only returned to training. Sources tell CBS Sports that USMNT assistant and native Valencian Nico Estevez was recently back in Valencia to meet with Musah. He met with Musah at the Ciutat Esportiva de Paterna, which is Valencia’s training center, to check on him, talk a bit with the club and more. Valencia coach Jose Bordalas is hopeful that Musah can return to the pitch in September.
The Pepi news is quite significant because you can argue he’s the top prospect at the position in the entire pool. While Josh Sargent will likely get his minutes, Pepi is viewed as the future and somebody the U.S. couldn’t afford to lose to Mexico. He’s still young and expectations should stay reasonable, but simply being with the team, getting this camp experience and perhaps some minutes could do wonders for his development.
No Reggie Cannon in the squad might be a surprise for some, but we continue to hear rumblings about his potential move from Boavista. It’s unclear exactly why he isn’t in the squad, but that may just be because of an impending move.

Here’s What The 2021 USWNT Schedule Looks Like

As much as people love to hate on 2020 for being a crappy year, the sad truth is that as the calendar turns to 2021, our problems won’t magically go away. It’ll be many months — years even — until the Covid-19 vaccine can be fully administered to the global population. Most of the world’s governments are still doing everything in their power to ignore climate change. And let’s not forget police officers are still shooting unarmed Black men with near impunity. But one thing the change in year will bring about is more games on the 2021 USWNT schedule.

Because of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the USWNT played nine matches in 2020 (winning them all). While that’s five more than the USMNT played, it was a fraction of the 24 the women played in 2019.

The USWNT missed out on one of its major tournaments in 2020: the Olympics. While mostly a U-23 competition on the men’s side, for the women the Olympics are up there right behind the Women’s World Cup in importance. (This despite the fact the Olympics allows fewer women’s teams than men’s teams and labels the groups E-G while giving the men’s tournament groups alphabetical preference (A-D).)

The 2020 Olympics in Japan were rescheduled for 2021 and will be a highlight of the 2021 USWNT schedule. The tournament will run from July 21-Aug. 6.

With Covid-19 still ravaging the planet, FIFA decided in December to canceled just about every youth competition in 2021. The 2020 U-20 Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Costa Rica and Panama was initially moved to 2021 then canceled outright. The 2021 U-17 Women’s World Cup was pushed back to 2022. We won’t be seeing the USWNT youth teams compete for championships in 2021.

We got our first chance to see the USWNT with a pair of friendly wins over Colombia to cap off the January camp. Those matches set the stage for the 2021 SheBelieves Cup, in which the USWNT won all three matches against Canada, Brazil and Japan from Feb. 18-24. Those matches were followed by friendlies against Sweden (1-1 draw) and France (2-0 win).

The USWNT will host three other teams in a summer series from June 10-16 in Texas before a pair of friendlies in late June/early July to prepare for the Olympics. Portugal (June 10), Jamaica (June 13) and Nigeria (June 16) will all place the U. S. in Houston and Austin.

Two friendlies that are already scheduled will be in November in Australia against the Matildas.

One thing the USWNT won’t have to worry about in 2021 is Women’s World Cup qualifying. Concacaf begins qualifying for the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship, the tournament that serves as qualifying for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, in November. The U.S. and Canada are given direct entries to the Concacaf championship and thus won’t compete for a World Cup spot until the July 2022 tournament.

But back to MLS and their limit on legionnaires. And America has it. Each of the clubs has several places for foreigners before the start of the championship. Their number is centrally approved by the league. On the eve of the current championship there were 216 such places. Simple arithmetic: we divide 216 places into 27 teams.As a result, each club, with an application of 25 people, has eight seats for legionnaires. That is, exactly as much as at the current limit in Russia.

The limit can be bypassed by giving the player a green card, that is, with dual citizenship, the player is considered an American. At the same time, we are not talking about the national team of the country – if a player was played for another national team in at least one official match, he will never be able to play for another. So he is not considered a foreigner in the MLS.

It is even more interesting further.Places for foreigners can … change. And if a club wants to rely on foreign players, then it can collect at least all 11 positions for foreigners and enter the field with this international. The positions to exchange such places are the picks in the draft, as well as just the players.

It should be noted that in the USA they hate the word transfer. There is no transfer market as such. Yes, European footballers have to be redeemed on such terms, but if you are inside the MLS itself, then there is a system in which there are only exchanges.

And, of course, about the draft. The MLS has the same system as other American sports. There are no children’s academies here, which are in Russia and Europe. Sports in the United States are practiced first at the school level and then at the college level. It is the generation of players who have gone through college that are drafted.

American draft as usual. That is, only American players are chosen on it. Even Canadians rarely get there. Each club negotiates with foreigners separately.By the way, the college football program allows an athlete to study for free in many universities in the country, so foreigners also come here and can also get into the draft. These are just a few of the features that characterize the American club system. Americans, due to their geographical location, the country’s interest in European football, are engaged in selling their league, trying to get income.Domestic players, or foreigners who studied in American colleges, are much easier to sell to the public than some football players from overseas, even if they are big stars there in the Old World.
