Overview of the US Club Soccer National Cup XX
The US Club Soccer National Cup XX Finals took place from July 16-20, 2021 at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado. This prestigious cup-based national competition brought together over 200 youth soccer teams from 26 states across the country. After five days of intense matches, 23 teams emerged victorious and were crowned national champions in their respective age groups and divisions.
Tournament Format and Structure
The National Cup XX featured boys and girls teams competing in age groups ranging from U-13 to U-19. The tournament was structured with two main competitive tiers:
- 24 Super Group divisions (most competitive level)
- 22 Premier Group divisions
The competition began with group stage matches over the first three days. This was followed by knockout rounds, including semifinals and finals, over the last two days. Some divisions went straight to championship matches, while others played through semifinal rounds first.
Standout Performances and Multiple Champions
While many clubs had strong showings at the tournament, two organizations stood out by claiming multiple national titles:
- Eclipse Select Soccer Club – won boys championships in the U-15 and U-17 Super Divisions
- FC Stars – claimed girls titles in the U-14 and U-19 Super Divisions
Another notable achievement came from STA, who repeated as U-16 Boys Super Division champions. Their 2005 birth year team captured the title this year, following in the footsteps of the club’s 2003 team that won the same age group at National Cup XVIII in 2019.
The Road to the National Cup Finals
Reaching the National Cup XX Finals was no easy feat for the participating teams. To qualify for the national tournament, clubs had to prove themselves through a series of regional and state competitions:
- Five National Cup Regional tournaments
- Various state cup qualifying events
Only the top performers from these preliminary stages earned the right to compete for national titles in Colorado. This qualification process ensured that the National Cup XX Finals truly featured the elite youth soccer teams from across the United States.

- Growing emphasis on coaching education and consistent playing philosophies
Events like the National Cup play a crucial role in this landscape by providing high-level competition and exposure for players outside of the professional club academy systems.

Ireland Lacrosse Team Éire to Make Appearance at US Club Lacrosse Nationals
The 2024 national development team who will attend the World Lacrosse Festival alongside the men’s national team at the 2022 World Games in Limerick, Ireland will compete in the Club Nationals over New Year’s weekend
Orlando, Florida–(Newsfile Corp. – November 11, 2021) – Ireland Lacrosse National Development Team Coach, Brian Fitzgibbons, has assembled the organization’s U18 Team Éire squad for a priming session at the Club Nationals, a Madlax Event powered by US Club Lacrosse. The team is made up of a large percentage of Irish heritage players from lacrosse hot bed schools, such as Boys Latin, Haverford, Calvert Hall, Hotchkiss, Shady Side and Saint John Paul II Academy. While in Ireland, the team will compete in the U18 division, but they are made up entirely of 2024 graduation year players (mostly 16 years of age).
Ireland Lacrosse Team Éire
According to the Ireland Lacrosse website, “The Éire teams have been established as part of the Irish national lacrosse team development program. The Éire team competes in various events and tournaments, some of which are part of the selection process for the Irish national teams.”
The Éire (pronounced ‘err-ah’) teams were predominately comprised of older men and women players until 2018, when the first Ireland youth national development team was formed. That team has competed in field and box events in different parts of the USA. Over the course of 3 years, the team has developed into a force to be reckoned with.
The team is led by 3 offensive captains, Michael and Matthew Evans, two brothers of Irish heritage who have been with the team since its inception, along with Liam Gregorek, a second-generation Irish heritage player from Shoreham Wading River High School. On the defensive side, co-captain, Marcus Acevedo of Boys Latin school, who draws his heritage from his grandmother, has been with the team since its first game, including a box lacrosse debut in Michigan in 2020.
The Club Nationals is known as one of the most popular national lacrosse events in the USA. Highly attended by many of the top 100 ranked teams in the U.S., it had 79 teams compete in January, 2021. The boy’s division is sold out according to their website. Top programs, such as Madlax, 3d, GATE, CWE and many others will be in attendance.
Coach Fitzgibbons explained his reasons for attending the Club Nationals, “This team has grown from a young group of 13-years-olds, to grown men, ready to be challenged and represent Ireland on the world stage next summer. What better place to test our strategies, than against the best the USA has to offer?”

OKPREMIERCLUBS.com
Oklahoma Premier Clubs (OPC) has announced that the Tulsa Sheffield United SC has been accepted as a new member beginning in the fall of 2019. OPC will be the club’s primary league platform and provide state, regional and national competition opportunities for its 11-U through 18/19-U boys and girls age groups.
Five of Oklahoma’s top clubs – Northeast Oklahoma FC, Oklahoma Celtic, South Lakes Cosmos, TSC Hurricane and West Side Alliance SC – founded the OPC as their primary, competitive platform. Since the launch in 2017, OPC has added four additional clubs including Highlanders SC, River Valley FC and Stillwater Apex.
“Tulsa Sheffield United Soccer Club is very excited to join the Oklahoma Premiere Clubs (OPC). Our mission has been to create an elite training and competition environment that strives to reach the highest level of success through first achieving excellence and providing a life enriching experience in an atmosphere that seeks to develop the complete player on and off the field. We believe that the Player First platform as well as the club collaboration and other OPC programming is the next step in promoting a healthy environment for our players and coaches to flourish,” says Rob Swain, Executive Director, Sheffield United SC.
As a member of OPC, Sheffield United will now enjoy the benefits of US Club Soccer and OPC benefits including Players First Initiatives, PDP/ID2, and participation in the annual Oklahoma Premier Clubs State Cup event that includes a direct pathway to US Club Soccer’s National Cup, a cup-based national championship series that includes Regionals and other qualifying state cups.
“It is exciting for OPC to be joined by another quality club with a rich tradition and history. NE Oklahoma’s soccer community can be dated by the inception of several club programs in the 90’s, and Vic Hughes and Alan Woodward’s founding of Sheffield United is an example of another step that was taken for the good of our soccer community. Sheffield’s participation in the OPC platform will only enhance the experience for all OPC members, and we are encouraged by their club’s leadership to help accelerate and advance ideas and directives within the OPC community of leaders. Another terrific addition for OPC,” says Roger Bush, WSA Executive Director
“We are excited to welcome Sheffield United to the OPC platform. We continue to improve our best-in-class platform in the region for league and post season play. We are continuing to add more diversity in our membership. Very excited to have them on board!” says Brandon Lawless, South Lakes Soccer Club Director of Coaching.
“Sheffield United is a long-standing and established club. We have great respect for Alan Woodward and Vic Hughes who founded the club many years ago with Vic and his staff leading the club for years. Their joining OPC will be a great addition for our members and programs. We look forward to supporting Sheffield with their initiatives and providing expanded opportunities for their players,” says Jim Tindell, TSC Hurricane Executive Director.

The third place game was also a rematch as Bruin bounced back from an earlier loss to defeat Trojan 9-7. For complete results, click here. The championship game started off as a back and forth affair as the teams exchanged goals before NYAC pulled ahead 4-2 thanks to back to back goals from Rhodes and Bennett Williams. From there NYAC kept Olympic Club at bay as they took a 6-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter. NYAC continued their offensive power in the second as Matthew Farmer and Rhodes hit again to push the lead to 8-4. Olympic Club tried to fight back but for every-two goal run they had NYAC had an answer as they increased their lead to 11-8 at halftime. Olympic Club quickly got on the board to start the third but once again NYAC had all the answers as Williams, Rhodes and Kacper Langiewicz all scored to increase the NYAC lead to 14-9. Olympic Club didn’t give up though as Thomas Agramonte scored back to back goals but Rhodes scored with just a few seconds left to push the NYAC lead to 15-11 at the end of the third. Once again Olympic Club scored to start the fourth but this time it was NYAC’s defense who came up strong as they allowed just three goals with two of them coming in the final two minutes as they held on for a 16-14 victory.
In earlier action, Santa Barbara Premier A took down Davis 15-8 for seventh place and Stanford defeated Riptide 13-7 to take fifth place. The competition finished up with Golden Bear finishing 9th, Long Beach 10th, Sunset San Diego 11th and Santa Barbara Premier B 12th.

90,000 Messi was left without a club, but could win the trophy with the national team. Argentina will face the final with Brazil
On the night of July 10-11, the national teams of Argentina and Brazil will meet in the 2021 America’s Cup final. The decisive match will take place at Maracana, and the team leaders – Lionel Messi and Neymar should become its main characters. The meeting starts at 03:00 Moscow time.
Like Euro 2020, postponed for a year due to coronavirus America’s Cup turned out to be very strange and controversial .At first, they wanted to hold it in Argentina and Colombia, but there began mass protests and it was decided to hold it in Brazil. There, too, at first it was restless and the option of a complete cancellation of the championship was not ruled out, but at the last moment the tournament was still left in Brazil. During all these showdowns, invited from Australia and Qatar refused to participate in the Cup, and the number of participants was reduced to 10 teams.
Organizational chaos and football fun continued at the tournament itself: scandals, empty stands and wild mistakes of referees – all this was unfairly deprived of the participants and spectators of the Euro 2020 taking place in the other hemisphere of the planet. And in conclusion, the America’s Cup also presented the final of dreams – a classic confrontation between Brazil and Argentina. For more than a century of rivalry, teams have met 108 times , and so far a slight advantage is on the side of 5-time world champions: 43 wins against the Brazilians, 40 – against the Argentines, 25 times the national teams drew.
But in the America’s Cups, Albiseleste won more often: 15 wins, 10 defeats and 8 draws. They also won more American titles: 14 Argentine against 9 Brazilian. The last time they met in the decisive match was 14 years ago – in the 2007 Copa America final in Venezuela, Brazilians Carlos Dunga crushed Argentines Alfio Basile with a score of 3: 0. As part of the Brazilian national team, Dani Alves, Julio Baptista, Robinho and… Wagner Love, who played for CSKA Moscow, played and scored in that final. Javier Zanetti, Javier Mascherano, Esteban Cambiaso, Juan Sebastian Veron played for Argentina then, and Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messiah worked in the attack, for whom that America’s Cup was the first in his career.
It is possible that the 2020 tournament, in which Argentina and Brazil will meet again, will be the last for the great Argentinean. As well as the chance to win the long-awaited trophy with the national team.
Neymar saves the season, Messi goes to the coveted title in the national team and the Ballon d’Or
A terrible injustice – Neither 29-year-old Neymar nor 34-year-old Messi have ever won the America’s Cup.
In 2019, when the Brazilians last won the Copa America, Neymar was injured just before the start of the championship and was unable to take part in the home tournament. In general, the Brazilian compensates for the unsuccessful season at PSG with performances in the national team: the striker has 2 goals scored and 3 assists. But the main part of these statistical successes fell on the group stage, in the playoffs Neymar distinguished himself with only one transfer. By the way, the entire Brazilian national team plays very pragmatically in the games right through: the pentacampeons reached the final thanks to modest victories with a score of 1: 0 over Peru and Chile in the 1/4 and 1/2 finals, respectively. And this is in the presence of such players as Marquinhos, Casemiro, Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus and Neymar itself.
In this sense, Argentina with Di Maria, Alejandro Gomez, Lautaro Martinez and, of course, Lionel Messi looks more fun. But Messi as a whole in the national team, and especially in the America’s Cups, generally had a black streak – three times Argentinean could take this trophy, but all three finals lost (2007 – 0: 3 Brazil, 2015 and 2016 – twice in a row on penalties Chile ). And now – the fourth attempt by the captain of the Argentine national team.
When there is no pressure on Lionel Messi, he shows his best football. This truth was once again confirmed by the America’s Cup-2021.
The ex-Barcelona captain, not bound by any obligations to the Catalan club, became a free agent since July 1, the attention to which has noticeably weakened due to the parallel European Championship, right now is perhaps the best footballer on the planet again.
Believe it or not, the Argentine national team playing this crazy tournament in Brazil is doing just fine. Messi – the top scorer of the tournament (4 goals), the best assistant (5 assists) , he was most often recognized as the best player of the match and remains the only footballer of the Argentina national team who played all the America’s Cup matches without substitutions. Only in one match – against the Paraguayan national team in the 3rd round of the group stage – the forward did not score a single point according to the “goal + pass” system. The Argentines have scored 11 goals for the entire tournament, in 9 of them Messi took a direct part.
Not without historical achievements: during the tournament, the striker broke Mascherano’s record for the number of games for the Argentine national team (he now has 150).
In addition, the Argentinian is one goal away from Pele’s record for goals for the national team among South American footballers (the Brazilian has 77 goals).
Another achievement of the albiseleste captain looks even more incredible: in the semifinals with Colombia, Messi converted a shot from the spot in a penalty shootout and helped his team to break into the third in 6 years America’s Cup final. What else needs to be done to make her finally win it?
But, perhaps, the head coach of the Argentine national team Lionel Scaloni made a real football miracle: is almost the first time Messi looks organic in the national team. And not only as a player, but also as a leader, team captain. And most importantly – enjoys it. Have we seen something similar at the Euro from those who, along with Messi, are considered to be the main contenders for the Ballon d’Or – Ronaldo, Lewandowski, De Bruyne and Lukaku, Mbappe? By the way, if the Argentine national team manages to take the last step towards the title – to defeat Brazil Neymar in the final, then it is Messi who will become the main contender for this year’s Golden Ball . Seventh in his career. Wondering how Barcelona’s bosses are feeling right now?

Some twenty or thirty years ago, the US team was considered an exotic team. The Americans got to the same world championships only due to the weakness of their rivals in the CONCACAF zone.
Today it is a serious team, over and over again solving the problem of getting into the top 16 best teams on the planet.
History of the USA national football team
- Participation in the final stage of the World Championships: 10 times.
- Participation in the final stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup: 14 times.
- Participation in the America’s Cup final stage: 4 times.
USA Achievements
- CONCACAF Gold Cup Winner – 5 times.
- Silver medalist – 5 times.
- Bronze medalist – 2 times.
- Bronze medalist of the 1930 World Championship.
In general, the theme of the development of professional football in the United States, or, as it is called there, “soccer”, is quite interesting. After all, historically, Americans prefer hockey, baseball, American football and basketball.
The first attempt was made in 1968 when the North American Football League was formed. There was a real football boom in the country then, because such stars as Pele, Johan Cruyff, George Best and Franz Beckenbauer played in the American league. However, the league only lasted until 1984.
Professional football owes its revival to the 1994 World Cup. The MLS League was created as part of the United States’ bid to host the World Cup, but the first championship was only held in 1996.
MLS meets all the attributes of American closed leagues, such as the NHL and the NBA: no practice of relegation of the weakest clubs, division into conferences, drawing of the regular season and playoffs, holding an “all-star” match. In addition to 17 American teams, there are three Canadian teams playing in MLS: from Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto.
As for the national team, its creation dates back to 1916 – it was then that the US team played its first match, beating the Swedish national team 3: 2 in Stockholm.
USA Team at the World Championships
The first pancake did not come out lumpy for the US national team at the world championships – at the very first world championship they defeated the national teams of Paraguay and Belgium with the same score 3: 0, and reached the semifinals, where they suffered a crushing defeat from the Argentina national team 1: 6.
But the next championship turned out to be a failure – in Italy, the US team in the first round of the tournament, held according to the Olympic system, was humiliated by the home team 1: 7.
But at the 1950 World Cup, the Americans created one of the loudest sensations in the history of football – the US amateur team beat the England national team, which finally condescended to participate in the world championships and came to Brazil with the firm intention of proving what they saw as superiority. And although the other two matches in the group were lost to the Spanish and Chilean teams, this victory remains one of the most significant in the history of the American national team.
Then there was a 40-year hiatus when the US team could not qualify for the World Championships. It was possible to do this only in 1990, but in Italy the Americans suffered three defeats with a total score of 2-8.
By that time, the country had already received the right to host the World Cup, so such a performance by the national team could not but cause concern. Plus, let me remind you that the United States did not yet have a professional football league, and a limited number of football players played abroad (in the application of the US national team for the 1994 World Cup, there were only seven of them).
Then the Americans invited the famous sensation specialist Bor Milutinovich to the national team and performed quite well. Having taken the second place in their group, they lost 0: 1 to the future world champions Brazilians in the 1/8 finals in a stubborn duel.
At the 1998 and 2006 World Championships, the US team was unable to qualify from the group, and they lost five matches out of six, but between these tournaments the team achieved the highest achievement in recent history.
The 2002 World Cup was rich in sensations, and one of them was created by the American team. Already in the first match, they beat one of the favorites of the tournament, the Portuguese national team 3: 2, and during the match they were leading 3: 0. Having played in a draw with the hosts of the tournament, the US team advanced to the 1/8 finals from the second place.
There they were opposed by old acquaintances – the Mexican national team, which is considered the best team in CONCACAF. The Mexicans were the favorites for that meeting, but goals from Brian McBright and Landon Donovan refuted that claim. In the ¼ finals, the Americans played great with the German team – they were completely liberated, because even the defeat in this match did not negate their achievements. But still the Germans were stronger – 1: 0.
At the 2010 and 2014 World Championships, the US team successfully solved the problem of qualifying from the group, and in the first stage of the playoffs lost in extra time with the same score 1: 2 to the national teams of Ghana and Belgium, respectively. But the Americans did not make it to the world championship in Russia.
USA Team at CONCACAF Gold Cup
The US team missed the first three tournaments, and then could not qualify for a long time. The first participation in the finals dates back to 1985, while the US team took second place in the group and did not make it to the next stage.
However, since 1989, the US national team not only became a participant in all the final tournaments (there were 14 of them), but only two times failed to become a medalist, and won the title five times.
True, for the sake of fairness, I note that 13 of these tournaments were held in the United States (twice together with Mexico, one – with Canada).
The first victory was won in 1991 (by the way, this was the first tournament with its modern name, before that it was called the “CONCACAF Gold Cup”).Then in the final after a goalless draw with the Honduran team, the victory was won only in a penalty shootout, consisting of 16 hits, 9 (!!!) of which were not converted.
And the last time the Americans won was in 2013, when Panama was beaten 1-0 in the final.
USA Team at America’s Cup
The tradition of inviting teams from the CONCACAF zone to Copa America dates back to 1993, when the national teams of Mexico and the USA were invited to the tournament. The Americans then could not get out of the group, but Mexico reached the final.
However, at the next tournament, the US team bypassed their famous rivals. Then the Americans sensationally took first place in the group, beating the Chileans 2: 1 and defeating the Argentina national team 3: 0. In the quarterfinals, the US team on penalties passed the Mexican team and only in the semifinals was it stopped by Brazil 1-0.
The US team was next invited to the Copa America 12 years later, in 2007, but then the Americans lost all three matches in the group. But in 2016, the United States became the first non-South American country to host the tournament. The national team supported the status of the hosts of the tournament and reached the semifinals, where they lost to the main favorite – the Argentina national team.
US National Football Team Players
Record holders in the number of matches played
- Kobe Jones – 164 appearances.
- Landon Donovan – 157.
- Jeff Aigus – 134.
- Clint Dempsey – 130.
- Marcelo Balboa – 127.
USA Top Scorers
- Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey – 57 goals each.
- Josie Altidore – 41.
- Eric Vinalda – 34.
- Brian McBride – 30.
- Joe-Max Moore – 24.
US National Football Team Squad
The club geography of the representation of the US national team players is extremely diverse – in addition to MLS, there are European and Mexican clubs. The national team leaders are its veterans – Tim Howard, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey.
Among the young players, one can single out Julian Green, who belongs to Bayern Munich but plays for Hamburg on loan.
As for the game of the American national team, one feature should be noted here – indomitability. Like NHL hockey players, American football players do not recognize any authority and fight to the end no matter what the score, and it is simply impossible not to respect them for this.
Coach of the USA national football team
The coach of the USA national team is known to everyone – the charismatic Jurgen Klinsmann has been successfully working with the team since 2011.During this time, the national team won the CONCACAF Cup, performed well at the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Copa America.
By the way, at the last world championship the US team was in the same group with the German team under the leadership of Joachim Loew – Klinsmann’s replacement in this position and his good friend. The teams met in the last round, and both were satisfied with a draw. This circumstance was very much exaggerated before the match, but friends did not give reasons for accusations – Germany won 1: 0.

Interesting Facts
- The first hat-trick in World Cup history was scored by US team player Bertha Patnoud. On July 17, 1970, he sent three goals to the Paraguay national team.
- The USA national team is not considered to be the elite of world football, but the Americans have played at least in the semifinals of all tournaments in which they took part: the World Cup, CONCACAF Gold Cup, Olympic Games, America’s Cup, Confederations Cup.
Present
Team USA have advanced to the final, fifth round of the 2018 World Cup qualifier. Very soon, a two-round tournament will begin here with the participation of six teams, three of which will receive direct tickets to Russia, and the fourth team will go to meet the AFC representative.
The opponents of the Americans are traditionally a strong Mexican team, the sensation of the last World Cup Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras, who have added strongly in recent years. But in any case, I think one of the first three places will remain with the US team.

Plane crash throughout Munich, death the teams of the Italian football club Torino and the US national figure skating team are among the worst disasters in the history of world sports.
On Tuesday, a plane carrying one of the best football teams in Brazil crashed on its way to the city of Medellin, Colombia. There were 81 people on board. Only five managed to survive.
The plane was chartered for the Brazilian Chapecoense football players on their way to the South American Cup final.
As a rule, sports teams are sent to competitions on one plane.
The deaths of the Chapecoense players are the latest in a long line of deaths for sports teams.
Here are some of the most memorable examples:

On Friday, October 13, 1972, the Uruguayan Air Force Fairchild FH-227D was on a charter flight from Montevideo to Santiago. On board were 5 crew members and 40 passengers (members of the Old Christians rugby team, their relatives and sponsors).
On approaching Santiago, the liner flew into a cyclone, crashed into a rock and collapsed at the foot of the mountain.
Rescuers learned that not everyone died as a result of the disaster, only after two survivors, having wandered for 10 days, came across shepherds in the foothills of the Andes.
Two months later, the Chilean Air Force was able to locate 14 survivors of the accident.
A book was written about this story and a film called “The Living” was made. In it, in particular, it tells how the passengers who survived the crash ate the frozen bodies of their dead comrades so as not to starve to death.

In the United States of America, “football” ( football ) is the sport we know as
“American football”. But “European football” in the United States is called “soccer”
( soccer ). Therefore, the league that unites the professional football teams in North America is called Home
soccer league ( Major League Soccer, MLS ).
Major League Soccer is not part of the traditional Big Four of American professional sports
( NFL – American football,
MLB – baseball,
NBA – Basketball & NHL –
hockey), but in recent years it has been rapidly gaining popularity.Speaking of the expansion of MLS in America, even often
the word “expansion” is used – so quickly new clubs appear and the number of fans increases (according to the number
fans attending matches, MLS ahead of NBA and NHL ).
Football in the United States of America has been known since the middle of the 19th century, and already in 1884 the first
the organization that unites fans of the sport: American Football Association ( American Football
Association ). In 1913, the United States Football Association was founded ( United States Football Association , later it
was renamed US Soccer Football Association , and is now called US Soccer Federation ), in the same
year became one of the first members of FIFA. In the USA, “European” football has always been inferior (and significantly) in popularity
baseball (and later – and football “American”), nevertheless, the American Soccer League, created in 1921, was inferior
by the number of fans only Major League Baseball. The Great Depression, which greatly influenced the development of sports in the United States, led to the collapse
of this league, the Americans again became massively interested in football only in the sixties, when several strong
student teams.
A surge in interest in soccer was sparked by the 1994 FIFA World Cup in America. Already in 1988
the American Football Federation, fulfilling the requirements for the hosts of the world cup FIFA , has undertaken
to create a major football league in the country. Such a league became MLS , the first season in which was held in 1996.
At that time, there were only ten teams in the league, with most of them playing in American football stadiums.
Over the years, Major League Soccer has experienced ups and downs, the rules have changed, new teams have appeared (including
including Canadian), new stadiums were built. Today MLS continues to develop rapidly, acquiring all
new and new fans.

MLS
Currently, there are twenty-three clubs (twenty American and three Canadian) in MLS , which are divided into two
conferences: Eastern ( Eastern Conference ) and Western ( Western Conference ).MLU Regular Championship
held from March to October, each team plays thirty-four matches throughout it. Mid season
the “All-Star Game”, traditional for American sports, is taking place. Unlike baseball, basketball, or hockey
professional leagues (where two teams of “their” players play in a “star match”) All-Star Game Major League
soccer team of the best players MLS meets with one or another invited foreign club.
At the end of the regular season, the top twelve teams (six from East and West) advance to the playoffs ( playoffs ),
a series of elimination games in which the conference winners are determined first and then the league champion.
Strongest Team MLS wins the Phillip F. Anschutz Trophy , among other Major League awards
soccer – Supporters Shield (awarded to the team with the most points in the regular
championship), “Most Valuable Player” (MLS Most Valuable Player Award, MVP), “MLS Golden Boot” ( MLS Golden Boot ,
awarded to the best striker), “Defender of the Year” ( MLS Defender of the Year Award ), “Goalkeeper of the Year” ( MLS
Goalkeeper of the Year Award ), “Rookie of the Year” ( MLS Rookie of the Year Award ) and others.
Every year, “European football”, including professional football, in the United States has more and more
and more fans. It is highly probable that in the near future “a large
the four “will become the” big five “and soccer will be the fifth sport.

90,000 American Football League team “Washington Redskins” has abandoned the controversial name – InoTV
Just a few years ago, the owner of the US National Football League Washington Redskins, Dan Snyder, assured that his club would never change the name and logo, which many consider offensive to Native Americans. However, according to CNBC, the protests and criticism of sponsors helped the management to change their point of view and the Redskins announced that they were ready to completely change their image.
The Washington Redskins ( Washington Redskins ), the US National Football League (NFL) team, have announced they intend to abandon their 1932 name, CNBC reported.
The club previously launched a process to consider renaming as the team’s major sponsors and partners increasingly criticized the Redskins’ name and branding as being considered offensive to Native Americans.
“ We want to keep our sponsors, fans and the entire community informed about our future plans. Today we are announcing that, following the review process, we are moving away from the current Redskins name and logo. (Club Owner – InoTV) Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working together to develop a new approach to name and logo that will showcase our proud and tradition-rich club and will inspire our sponsors, fans and the community for the next 100 years. ” , – leads the channel command statement.
CNBC recalls that the club’s name has been opposed by a number of major sponsors of the now ex-Redskins, including Bank of America, Nike, Pepsi and FedEx. It is noteworthy that the last company on this list owns the rights to the name of the team’s home stadium in Maryland. In addition, such giants as Walmart, Target and Amazon have refused to place Redskins’ souvenirs on their sites. Fanatics, the exclusive manufacturer and distributor of Nike branded merchandise with NFL team logos, has announced that it will be holding a sale on products bearing the club’s former name.
As reminds CNBC, in 2013 the owner of the ex-Redskins Dan Snyder insisted that his team would never change the name. “ It’s very simple. You can directly write in capital letters: NEVER “, – answered the entrepreneur when asked if the team is ever going to change its image. Apparently, as the channel suggests, the protest movement that began in the United States after the death of black George Floyd during police detention, forced Snyder to change his point of view.
90,000 35 years without a world championship and a defender for 70 million euros. The Canadians are the most unexpected leaders in the selection for the World Cup-22
The European qualification for the World Cup-2022 has come to an end, and in North America the teams played a little more than half of the matches. Following a 2-1 victory over Mexico, Canada took the lead in their qualifying group. The Canadians have 16 points after eight meetings. The US team earned 15, Mexico and Panama – 14. Vedomosti. Sport “- about the success of the hockey power on the football field.
Canada is the only undefeated national team in the North American selection (four wins and four draws). The team also leads in the number of goals scored (13) and goals conceded (five – on a par with the USA). In the FIFA ranking on October 21, Canadians occupy only 48th place (Russia – 33rd), but now they can greatly add in positions. The team has been led by John Herdman since January 2018. This year, he led the team to the Confederation of North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) Gold Cup semi-finals, where the Mexicans were stronger.
The 2014 Canadian Football Reform
The Canadian team’s style was influenced by Benito Floro, the former Real Madrid coach. The Spaniard simultaneously led the national and youth teams of Canada (under 23) and sought to move from the British style of play, focused on chaotic transitions from defense to attack, long passes with a fight for the ball, to a more controlled game. It was Floro who introduced the then 17-year-old Alfonso Davis into the composition.
The inculcation of the attacking style of the national team was continued by the current coach John Herdman, often releasing in the composition of four forwards. At the same time, the team is well organized in defense and concedes few goals.

College sports are an important step in the development of Canadian football. Universities are platforms for a smooth and quality transition from amateur to professional football. The fruits of this system were reflected in the success of the Canadian women’s team. The national team became the Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020, and also won the CONCACAF championship twice (1998 and 2010).
In 2014, Canada Soccer presented a new concept for player development – the Canadian Football Trail (CSP).
“Canada Soccer is committed to developing the technical skills of our players from the bottom to the national teams, and supporting players throughout their lives, regardless of age, gender or skill,” said Victor Montalani, President of Canada Soccer.
The goal of the reform was to create a structure that would supply new players in an organized manner to the national teams of Canada.Regional training centers, scouting networks and professional clubs have become links in the chain. Canadians have divided football into three areas: “recreational” (amateur), “competitive” (professional) and “excellent”. The last stage prepares players for performances at the highest level – in the national team.
The emphasis in the development of a football player on the “excellent” path is given to the consistency of the game philosophy that the player learns throughout his growth: from the moment he enters the training camp of a national association or the academy of a professional club, to playing at the highest level and being called up to the national team.
“Our vision focuses on creating one clear system that can make football successful in Canada. This will be achieved by setting and adhering to high standards, from youth football to adult football, raising the level of competition and taking a point approach to all facets of development to create a full-fledged player and a team approach that everyone will help, ”said the CTO of Canada. Soccer Tony Fonseca.
Clubs play an important role in the reform of Canadian football. They are dedicated to the growth of the national team and understand their impact on the success of the entire CSP development program.
“We are committed to supporting the vision of Canada Soccer, along with the continued development of our footballers as they evolve from the bottom up. At our club, we will forever recognize it as our duty to grow football in Canada, as can be seen from our academy and young footballer development programs. We will continue to provide advice, technical analysis and guidance to make sure we are adding value to the CSP, ”said Tim Bezbatchenko, general manager of Toronto, one of three Canadian clubs playing in the American Football League (MLS).
A new generation of talents
The cost of the Canadian national team on the transfermarkt portal is 165.5 million euros. Most of that – € 70 million – is the transfer price of Bayern defender Alfonso Davis. The 20-year-old Canadian is the top qualifying assistant in the North American region. In the national team, he plays a key role, but in a completely different position – central or winger. Davis started his career in attack. As part of Bayern Munich, the Canadian won the Champions League, became the champion of Germany three times, and in 2020.became the first North American in the symbolic team of the International Football Federation (FIFA).
The team of Canada also includes 21-year-old striker of the champion of France “Lille” Jonathan David and the champions of Turkey with “Besiktas” – Atiba Hutchinson and Kyle Larin. The latter is the top scorer in the qualifying cycle with nine goals and the record holder for national team goals (22). It is important to note that they all play in the Champions League, and the main goalkeeper of Canada, Milan Boryan, won the Serbian championship with Crvena Zvezda and is playing in the Europa League.

For the first and last time the Canadian national team came to the World Cup back in 1986, then in Mexico the team lost all three group stage meetings. For eight international tournaments in a row, Canadians have been unable to qualify. And if our eternal rival in hockey manages to qualify for Qatar, then this achievement will be doubly historic. In 2026Canada, the USA and Mexico will host the World Cup on the western continent, which means they will automatically qualify for it before anyone else and will be eligible to participate in two consecutive tournaments of this level.
As early as next November, the heated hockey confrontation between Russia and Canada may, for the first time in history, take place not on ice, but on a football field. Previously, the national teams of the countries met each other only three times: our guys were twice stronger at the Universiade, and the Canadians took the victory in the Agalavre Cup in 2018.
Canada has six more matches to play – including against the main competitors in the face of the United States and Panama. The first three teams of the North American selection go to Qatar directly, the fourth – gets into the intercontinental joints. For Canada, the World Cup has never been so close.
Anton Shunin: “Fans rightfully expect only victories from the national team” | Articles
The captain and goalkeeper of the capital “Dynamo” Anton Shunin has one of the best seasons of his career.Within the framework of the current championship, he has already played seven zero games, of which four in a row. With his game, he earned a place in the national team, where he is fighting for a place in the gate with Andrei Lunev and Marinato Guilherme. As part of the final training camp in 2018, Izvestia talked to the 31-year-old goalkeeper, who spoke about the defeat from the German national team (0: 3), shared his opinion about the current season and the situation with the extension of his contract with Dynamo
– Why was the match with the Germans so unfortunate for Russia?
– We played against a top team – ex-world champions. No matter what they say about the Germans now, they still remain one of the strongest teams in the world. They have an incredibly strong selection of players who play leading roles in some of the strongest clubs in Europe. We lost this match, but it is very instructive for us. To grow, you need to play with high-level teams. Now the main thing is not to lose heart and draw the right conclusions. We had a theoretical lesson, where we analyzed our mistakes, and now all thoughts are about the upcoming match with Sweden.
– The upcoming match with the Swedes will be crucial for our team in the League of Nations. If the Scandinavians had stumbled in Saturday’s game with Turkey, we would have already taken first place …
– For us, it would probably be a plus if everything was decided ahead of schedule. But from the very beginning we were prepared for the match with the Swedes as for the decisive one. We’re going to Stockholm to win. Moreover, after being defeated by the Germans, we need to rehabilitate ourselves.
– Don’t you feel that after the World Cup the fans have become more demanding of the national team?
– Of course, now the fans expect more from the national team, they want to see victories in every game, and this is absolutely correct.Every footballer and coach also wants to win all matches, only with this attitude can you progress. Probably, the fans expected that we would be able to beat the Germans – the favorite, as it was in the 1/8 World Cup with Spain. This time it didn’t work out, but if we continue to move in the right direction, then anything is possible. The World Cup showed that Russia can beat any rivals.
– Was it surprised when during the match the fans of the Russian national team cheered louder than the Germans?
– Yes, our fans were perfectly heard.I would like to say thank you very much to them, there is not often such massive support abroad. By the way, in the stands I even saw the Dynamo flag, it was nice (smiles) .
– Roman Neustädter and Konstantin Rausch, who spent most of their lives in Germany, play for the Russian national team. Did you make fun of them in the team?
– No, we were generally concentrated on the game as much as possible, we understood the importance of the meeting. And in general, we always try to support each other, and not pin up.The atmosphere in the team is really great.
– But sometimes it is necessary to defuse the situation. Who is doing this in Dziuba’s absence?
– Many people think that Dziuba walks and constantly amuses everyone in the national team – this is not so. We in the team very clearly share when you need to be serious and focused, and when you can joke and relax a little. All the guys communicate well with each other, so there is no stressful situation. For us, it would probably be a plus if everything was decided ahead of schedule. But from the very beginning we were prepared for the match with the Swedes as for the decisive one. We’re going to Stockholm to win. Moreover, after the defeat from the Germans, we need to rehabilitate ourselves.
– This is the third time in a row that you are in the national team. Has the challenge to the team become familiar and expected for you, especially given your stable performance for Dynamo?
– I don’t think about it. My task is to play and give all the best in every game. My presence in the national team depends only on this.
– You already have four clean sheets in a row in the RPL.Do you keep track of personal statistics?
– Of course, I know about this, but I’m not chasing personal records. The most important thing for me is the victory of my club.
– Many players are very jealous of statistics and set themselves challenges. Do you have goals in this regard? For example, play 100 matches against zero and get into the Yashin Club?
– Of course, getting into Yashin’s Club is my dream. In terms of statistics, this is probably the main goal. But again, again, my priority is team goals, not personal ones.
– There is an opinion that the current season is the best in your career …
– I hope that the best ones are ahead of me. In the meantime, even half of the season has not passed yet. Let’s wait until the end of the championship.
– Nevertheless, your progress is obvious …
– I strive for this and work hard to progress. I have plowed all my life and will continue to do it – this is the only way to grow.
– Aren’t you surprised that this happens at a very mature age (31 years)?
– The average age of goalkeepers in the major leagues of European countries is 29-30 years. With age comes experience, calmness, and you can maintain good physical shape for a long time. Gianluigi Buffon is an example of this. In general, I feel great in all plans and I hope that I will continue to progress.
– What is the first thing you can associate your snatch with?
– Perhaps in my youth I lacked muscle mass, I was very thin. Now I managed to get it, and I began to feel more harmonious, satisfied with my physical form. The constant playing practice in the club also affects.I feel even greater responsibility as Dynamo captain. All this together, plus the trust of the club’s coaching staff, a call to the national team, and give such a result.
– For most of your career, you competed for a place in the base with very high-status colleagues: Vladimir Gabulov and Roman Berezovsky. Now you are the uncontested first number. It helps?
– We have very talented young goalkeepers at Dynamo, they don’t let you relax. Competition is the engine of progress.
– How difficult is it to be not the first number in the national team?
– I am very glad to be there. At each workout, I try to show my maximum. The coaching staff makes a choice who to put in the goal, and in my power only to work and prove. At the same time, our goalkeeper team has excellent relations, we communicate well with both Lunev and Guilherme.
– Coach of the goalkeepers of the national team Gintaras Stauche, with whom you have already worked at Dynamo and have seriously improved with him. How much have its working methods changed?
– Gintaras is one of the strongest coaches I have worked with. His exercises changed, but the methodology remained the same. But it is important to understand that in the national team he has completely different tasks. We do not come to get in shape, but to maintain it and prepare for specific games. I understand his tasks and what the coach requires of me.
– What can you say about the current coach of Dynamo goalkeepers Yevgeny Plotnikov, who did not have such a serious experience of working in big clubs before?
– This does not affect our work with him in any way.We understand all his tasks and try to fulfill them. It was not easy at first, but we quickly rebuilt and understood its concept. He is a very good specialist with whom you can move forward.
– Vladimir Gabulov announced his retirement last week. Don’t you think he was in a hurry? Not surprised by his decision?
– I’m sure he could have spent a few more seasons at a high level. But this is his decision, which can only be respected. It’s great that he immediately found himself a new profession (Gabulov became the Minister of Sports of North Ossetia.- “Izvestia”), which is connected with sports. I am convinced that it will take place in a new kind of activity.
– You played together for a long time. Can you remember the main lesson that Gabulov gave you?
– We have always had very serious competition with Volodya. He never allowed himself to be slack, and, accordingly, I also could not afford to relax. Looking at him, I realized that you can never even allow yourself to train half-heartedly, you must always be as motivated as possible. This is probably the main lesson from him.
– Vladimir went into politics, do you have such thoughts?
– It’s too early to think about it (laughs) . I hope that I will play for more than one year. At least the physical condition allows it.
– Many of your friends football players are already studying to be coaches. Doesn’t this appeal to you?
– I have not yet decided on my future, but so far the profession of a coach does not interest me very much. This is a lot of work and very hard work.I see myself a little differently.
– In what?
– I’d rather be a leader than a coach. I would like to someday find myself, for example, in the position of the sports director of Dynamo.
– Roman Shirokov, who now holds this position, will not be offended?
– Well, it won’t be soon, so I hope it won’t be offended by (smiles) . So far, all I have is football, and I think about it.
– This season your contract with Dynamo ends.Is there any news on this?
– Not yet, but I hope there will be some shifts in the near future.
– Are you even considering an option in which you will have to move to another club?
– Well, if Dynamo doesn’t offer me a contract, then I’ll have to look for another job.
– Do you have any suggestions from other teams?
– I don’t know if it’s possible to talk about it now, but, yes, there has already been one proposal.
