90,000 how to get out of depression in Tbilisi?
Early morning in the park set me up for a positive. The fountains were just turned on, and the jets of water harmonized pleasantly with the fresh greenery, pleasing the eye with many shades. But all this charm of the awakened nature did not please Nino in any way.
She sat down on a bench in a deserted alley, threw a shovel and a bucket at her two-year-old daughter Liziko and rummaged in her bag in search of a lighter. My soul was not just sickening, but super-disgusting.
She just lit a cigarette, exhaled, – lo and behold, out of nowhere, some old man appeared right next to her bench. And no, in order to humanly pass by, as if there weren’t enough other benches, he also stuck with a question:
– Can I sit down?
Nino grunted something affirmative and turned away from him.Everything about the uninvited stranger irritated him: an ironed shirt with a dark tie, and a Svan hat that did not fit with this cultural outfit at all.
The pensioner slid a knowing look at Nino and asked the question again:
– You must be worried about something?
Nino almost exploded with such impudence. And so the nerves are at zero, and then every white moth will bother with questions. Once you have sat down – sit, do not arise when you do not ask. Just like her mother Kato. He also climbs with questions when not necessary.Although it was she who brought Nino to the present state, when she does not want to live from depression and from the voice of her own daughter blows her brain …
… Throughout her childhood and adolescence, Nino could not get rid of the thought that her mother had adopted her. Otherwise, it was logically inexplicable why she forgives everything to her younger brother, while she, Nino, loads her with household chores, constantly yells and dresses in other people’s things, which she managed to get from various acquaintances. But this thought had to be driven away every time because of the amazing external resemblance of mother and daughter.
Who exactly put Kato in the brain that a daughter should be treated like a stepdaughter is not clear, but it is a fact that she had a systematic upbringing line: “The worse the better.”
Kato drilled her daughter black. Slightly something was wrong, weighed out slaps and instilled that the daughter should be silent, listen and perform. She often repeated: “You were not born for entertainment, but for specific deeds! In life you still have to go through a lot of humiliation and you have to be ready for this!” For any tears flew in separately. Therefore, at the age of 13, Nino herself went to the bazaar, brought food, cooked, scrubbed the kitchen and bathroom, while her mother also did not cool down at that time, but cleaned other people’s apartments.
Father disappeared in an unknown direction, entangled in another marriage. At about 13 years old, Nino set herself the goal of breaking out of this circle and began to save money for her personal life. There were no real ideas yet, but Nino understood that without finances, all plans were nothing.
Having reached the age of majority and having worked here and there distributing flyers, as well as a nanny on call, Nino did everything possible to escape to Turkey.
“I will blow away dust particles and serve coffee to bed” – the story of one “beloved” daughter-in-law >>>
Rainbow plans for a quiet, calm work at someone’s home from a collision with reality left a vapor of disappointment. Escaped from the harassment of the first owner, got a job in a cafe as a cleaner. She just settled down in a new place, she was asked … I had to look for something else, but for now spend the night with my friend Nato and endure communication with her boyfriend. And he was not taken aback and drove up to Nino at the most unexpected moment, while Nato was not at home.
Nino did not worry about what had happened for long, she realized that now she would have to look for a refuge again. While looking for a new place, trying to get a temporary job, I lost sight of the women’s calendar and realized that it was too late to have an abortion. I somehow got to Tbilisi.
Kato’s reaction was easy to imagine. But a grandiose scandal still could not change anything in the current state of affairs. This is how Liziko appeared. You won’t earn much with a baby daughter, and therefore you had to listen to the mother’s daily reproaches, swallow it all, strengthening your nerves with the thought: “And this will pass!”
The only outlet was Eka’s neighbor, to whom Nino went down to take her soul away and at the same time hang out on the Internet.Nino studied dating sites and eventually found what she was looking for – Levani, who insisted that someone else’s child was not a problem for him.
They started dating. Naturally, Nino did not think about any special love, but perceived Levani as another passing stage in her life. Deep down, it was disgusting and disgusting to live with a person you don’t love.
And the mother is to blame for everything, ruining her life with her drill, from which she tried to escape to another, better world. But nothing came of it….
Liziko at that moment awkwardly knocked over a bucket of brown sand right on her dress, and Nino exploded:
– Nasty girl! Look what you do! Only clean put on. I drank all my blood.
Liziko looked at her mother and rolled over in tears, instinctively covering her face with her hands. If they were at home, Nino would also beat the little wretch for being sloppy.
– Hmmm … – the nasty old man uttered at this time, – it is not easy to bear mental trauma in oneself … Although now everyone is like that – one way or another… Wars do not go so easily.
Nino stared at him with fixed eyes. Did he just read her mind?
The old man sat motionless, looked somewhere at the tops of the trees and spoke without addressing anyone.
– The weak break down, pouring out their pain on those who are nearby and cannot answer. The strong in spirit hide everything in themselves and continue to walk with a smile through life, which, alas, does not make carpets of roses for anyone.
Nino had no answer.
A childhood recollection instantly emerged from my memory.Once upon a time, Kato yelled at her in the same way. With the same intonation. And today Nino drives her to a tiny daughter with exactly the same words, who just turned over a bucket of sand. She automatically copies what she hates the most! This means that in a few years, just like Nino, Liziko will hate her mother and will try to eliminate her from her life. The story of broken destiny is likely to repeat itself without making anyone happy.
The old man got up and walked on without saying goodbye.
Nino dropped her cigarette and called Liziko.
– Come to me. I love you and will try not to yell at you anymore … – came up and hugged my daughter.
Sometimes a fleeting meeting with a stranger allows you to see what has been hidden from you for many years.

Sociologist Hulot Vooglaid: romantic and pragmatist
Absolutely rightly Russian and Estonian, I think that now Ukrainian social scientists are accompanying the name Yulo Vooglaid with the epithet “legendary”.Unfortunately, in modern domestic sociological literature it is extremely difficult to find information about the life and work of Vooglaid. It will be very pleasant for me if this material will acquaint readers with an interesting scientist and a person of high civil resonance, as well as open to them a little-known page of the recent past of Russian sociology.
The preparation of this text is motivated by my deep respect for Hulot Vooglaid and the blessed memory of our departed colleagues and friends: Andrei Alekseev (1934–2017), Boris Grushin (1929–2007) and Vladimir Yadov (1929–2015).
I am grateful to Larisa Fedotova, professor of journalism at Moscow State University, for her help in preparing this text.
A little biographical
In the title, I introduced Hulot Vooglaid as a sociologist. This is an indisputable, but far from complete description of his long-term, versatile, ebullient and productive activity. Hulot is a social psychologist and journalist, educator and management consultant, a professor who has educated more than one generation of Estonian sociologists and journalists, a politician and a wide-ranging public figure. It is impossible to list those Russian sociologists who saw and continue to see their friend in Hulot Vooglaid, I will name only Vladimir Yadov and Boris Grushin, Andrey Alekseev and Boris Firsov, Yuri Levada and Lev Kogan. Andrei Zdravomyslov sent me, a completely “green” sociologist, to Hulot in the spring of 1969: for me it was not only my acquaintance with Voglayd – it was my discovery of Estonia and the beginning of my love for this country.
I called Hulot Vooglaid a romantic and pragmatist. Romantic – because he always dreamed, thought about the independence of his country.A pragmatist – because he is one of those who did a lot for the birth of a new Estonia and continues to work towards strengthening its economy and social policy. And I will add: to Hulot, as few of the modern social scientists, the word “enlightener” refers to. It covers simultaneously such roles as teacher and lecturer, consultant and professor, mentor and mentor. His educational activity can be seen in his many years of journalistic work, in teaching activity, in political views and actions.
Unfortunately, Russian sociologists who came to science after perestroika are not familiar (or poorly familiar) with the experience of Estonian sociology and do not know their Estonian colleagues very well. It was different in the 60s and the first half of the 70s, especially if we bear in mind the Leningrad and Moscow researchers of mass communication. For many Leningraders, Tartu was a “home”, and we were friends with many colleagues and students of Vooglaid.
Hulo Vooglaid was born in 1935 in Tallinn, in 1953 he graduated from the pedagogical school in g.Hapsalu. He worked in his specialty, then studied at the University of Tartu at the Faculty of History. In 1963-1965, Hulot was a journalist for the city newspaper Edazi, soon, thanks to his and his colleagues’ research, it became the most read newspaper in Estonia, and for many Soviet journalists and sociologists he remained an example of the fact that in those days it was possible to work bolder, more creatively, gain the trust of different groups of readers. In 1970, Voglayd brilliantly defended his Ph.D. thesis in philosophy at the Institute of Concrete Social Research of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR “Experience of sociological and socio-psychological research of the structure of the readership of a city and regional newspaper.”This was a comprehensive study of the content and readership of the Edazi newspaper. At that time, the original deep research that allowed Hulot to take its rightful place in a narrow group of leaders of mass communication research in the USSR.
The memoirs of the graduates of the University of Tartu, political scientist Yevgeny Golikov [1], whose graduation work in the mid-60s was directed by Ülo Vooglaid, and political scientist and philosopher Igor Rosenfeld [2]: they cover the events of the 60s – early 80s and relate to teaching philosophy and activities of the Ülo Vooglaid laboratory. It is noted that at the turn of 1965 and 1966 he created the Laboratory for the Sociology of Mass Communications at the University of Tartu. It existed on the basis of cost accounting, i.e. not at the expense of budgetary funds, but exclusively at the expense of self-sufficiency. Voglaid was the first in Estonia and one of the first in the Soviet Union to start conducting mass sociological surveys in two areas: sociology of work, especially the issues of satisfaction with various aspects of work, the formation of a psychological climate in work collectives, etc., as well as the study of the newspaper audience, the patterns of distribution of information through the media, ways of presenting information, taking into account the interests of readers. Thanks to the energy and enterprise of Vooglaid, the laboratory acquired its own farm, where the laboratory staff and her friends spent their free time, arranged art exhibitions, performed by young writers, conducted scientific seminars, and free discussions.
Over the course of several years, the Vooglaida laboratory has won recognition in the journalistic circles of the republic and support from some groups of the republic’s power structures and the Estonian intelligentsia for its research.
But this situation could not continue for a long time, in 1969-1970s at the University of Tartu began “freezing”. It turned out that the results of Vooglaid’s research did not correspond to the ideological requirements of the leadership of the Estonian SSR, so he was fired from the university. This is how Hulot’s friend, Leningrad / St. Petersburg sociologist Andrei Alekseev, recalled those events in Tartu sociology many years later. “Ideological collaborators”: the unique sociological laboratory of Yu.Voglayd was dispersed, he himself was expelled from the party; however, this only strengthened our union ”[3].
And these were not just words: at the end of June 1975, Alekseev wrote a letter in defense of Voglayd to the chairman of the Party Control Committee under the Central Committee of the CPSU A.Ya. Pelshe. In it, he wrote as it was then customary to write to the supreme body of the party: “… University, member of the CPSU since 1958Hulot Vooglaid. I have known Y. Voglaid since 1965. For 10 years of scientific cooperation and personal friendship, I have had the opportunity to repeatedly convince myself of his dedication to the cause of communist construction, ideological consistency, party adherence to principles in solving scientific and life questions, high responsibility in relation to business and deep personal decency. I will briefly characterize Y. Vooglaid as a scientist. He is known as the pioneer of social research in the Estonian SSR, the organizer of one of the most productive sociological laboratories in our country, an authoritative expert on the problems of mass information and propaganda, the social development of production collectives, the way of life and leisure of workers, and the socialist way of life. The work of Y. Voglaid is characterized by a distinct scientific and practical orientation. I know that the results of Yu. Voglaid’s work on the study of the party press received a positive assessment in the propaganda department of the Central Committee of the CPSU. ” The letter ends with the words: “My appeal to you, Arvid Yanovich, as the chairman of the CPC, is a personal appeal of a communist. I am the secretary of the party bureau of the Institute of Social and Economic Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, but in this case I speak on my own, and only on my behalf. This letter is committed by my party duty.I joined the party 3 years later than Y. Vooglaid, but today I am ready to share responsibility with those who recommended him to the ranks of the CPSU. At the same time I am sending a copy of this letter to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Estonia ”[4].
Further events developed as follows. Hulot Vooglaid was irrevocably expelled from the party (albeit with a somewhat softened wording). Forced to part with the University of Tartu, he moved to Tallinn, where he began working at the Center for Scientific Management of Labor and Administration of the Ministry of Light Industry of the Estonian SSR.As for A. Alekseev, in Leningrad, in the district committee of the party, his letter was regarded as an attempt to use his social (official?) Position to “put pressure on the Central Committee of our party,” get rid of the “inconvenient” secretary.
A noteworthy postcard from Vooglaid sent to Alekseev on New Year’s Eve 1976: “Dear Andrey. The mustache is you, perhaps. I wish you good luck with that too. Your Hulot “.On the back of the postcard was a picture of an Estonian peasant with a big mustache … shoeing a devil.
This is how the research and advisory activities of Ülo Vooglaid began. First – at the Center for Scientific Management of Labor and Management of the Ministry of Light Industry of the Estonian SSR, and from 1977 to 1986 – at the Institute for the Promotion of Leadership and Professional Development in the Estonian SSR. At a “cool” time for Estonia, from 1986 to 1989, Ülo headed the Pirgu Development Center, which developed scenarios for the self-regulatory functioning of the republic’s national economy.
Perestroika called Voglayd into big politics. He was a People’s Deputy of the USSR, a member of the Interregional Deputy Group. He was repeatedly elected to the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament). Voglayd was a member of the delegation that in 1989 negotiated with Mikhail Gorbachev on the republic’s secession from the USSR.
In September 2013, the National Library of Estonia hosted a large photo exhibition “Estonians in the Kremlin”, the delegation members recalled how it all happened. One of the photographs captures the moment when Vooglide explained to Gorbachev the systemic inevitability of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the report on the exhibition, Vooglide’s commentary is also given:
“- So it was.
– Did he understand?
– I hope so, as he specifically invited me to leave the hall to talk face to face. His wife Raisa was a sociologist, and he himself was not a layman “[5].
In 1992-1996 and 1996-1998, Vooglaid was a member of the Estonian Congress, and was elected in 2003, he announced that he was going to resign from parliament, because he did not feel the demand for his knowledge and skills. And in 2004, being the oldest member of parliament, he really gave way to a young politician.
Moving away from big politics, Hulot Vooglide focused on scientific research and active social, civic activities.
He served as Chairman of the Board of the National Library and the National Library Scientific Council. Ülo Vooglaid is the founder of the European Movement of Estonia, president of the Estonian Club of Rome, honorary member of the Estonian Society for Nature Conservation, co-founder of the Adult Teachers’ Association and many educational unions, as well as an honorary member of the Estonian Union of Journalists and a number of other public organizations.
Since 2000 Ülo Vooglaid has been an honorary professor at the University of Tartu. The core theme of his scientific work is the philosophy and practice of modern education, the preparation of new generations to face the challenges of the future. At the same time, in the field of his thoughts and analysis – a significant range of more private, practice-oriented problems of social management and self-regulation mechanisms, adult education, organizational and managerial theory and others.
About the directions in which he is working today, Voglayd reflects, his interviews and articles, revealing the content of his lectures in Ukraine, give an introduction. He regularly visits this country as a co-founder of the creative group Think Camp – a joint international initiative of thinkers and managers, a kind of “closed environment for thought creation for leaders who are ready to generate serious decisions.” The topic is extremely cutting edge, relevant – “How to change the country through education?” [6], and it is not surprising that, thinking about the future of their country, Ukrainian intellectuals turn to Vooglyd for experience. Close to this topic and the second direction of his lectures – the formation of “generalists” – individuals with a special systemic way of thinking, which allows them to observe reality in a fairly wide context.According to Vooglaid, the preconditions for the formation of generalists are genuine observance of civil rights. Democracy is not anarchy, but a function of culture. These are the main conditions for the ability to do independently – Hulot does not agree with the use of the word “make” here – decisions [7]. The future belongs to such individuals.
Back in 1975, Hulot Voglayd was “expelled” from sociology, but time has shown that nothing came of it. Hulot remained a sociologist, this is clearly visible in all his speeches and practices. And it was precisely the sociological approach to the problems of education that brought him to the “enlightener”.
I don’t want those who do not know Vooglaid to get the impression of him as a person who is only immersed in science and large, socially significant projects. This is not so, Hulot is talented in many ways. He lives on a farm near Tallinn, where his smithy, woodworking workshop and summer classroom for outdoor activities are located. He is a lively, witty person, loyal to friendship. I will end the biographical section with the recollection of Hulot Vooglaid by the leader of Russian sociology, Vladimir Yadov.Their friendship was long-lasting, deep and – more on that below – extremely fruitful for the development of Soviet sociology. So, Yadov, whose farm is located near the town of Rakvere in northern Estonia, says, according to his remarks, “about the importance of national characteristics in the development of advanced technologies”:
“A couple of years ago, Vooglayd, as usual, came to talk about a problem in my farm, at the entrance to which he attached (with his own hand forged), as is customary here, a plaque with the name of the farm -“ Kastani ”(Kashtan). We sit in the sun sipping the famous Estonian beer Saku . The authorities of Soviet Estonia, says Hulot, decided to distinguish themselves: to organize the production of shoes no worse than Italian ones, which were famous all over the world. We bought equipment from the Dino Bignoni company, set up the production of excellent leather, and special for the soles, and … it turned out that there was no suitable glue for the sole to hold firmly. They entrusted the advanced fishing collective farm to them. Kirov to make glue. The glue was successfully invented, if you drop it on your index finger and press your thumb against it, then in order to separate them, you need to run to the paramedic. This glue is famous to this day. Production starts. Doesn’t go! Need threads without a single knot. I had to buy threads from the same Italians. Production starts. Stop: it turns out that the hands are not the same ”[8].
Two invaluable contributions of Hulot Vooglaid to the formation of Soviet sociology
I will cite two very important plots in the history of Russian sociology, in which one of the key roles belongs to Hulot Vooglaid. Scene of action – Estonia, time of action – 1960s.
Plot One: Seminars in Kääriku
We have to admit that there are very few living participants of seminars in Kääriku left among Russian sociologists, because all this was half a century ago. I was not lucky, I came to sociology when the era of seminars ended, and did not participate in them, but I knew many active participants in this forum and can imagine the scientific level of discussions and the atmosphere that prevailed there. Perhaps the most detailed description of everything that happened in Kääriku was the philosopher and sociologist, professor Leonid Naumovich Stolovich (1929–2013), a Leningrad native, a graduate of Leningrad State University, who worked all his life at the University of Tartu.Fragments from his 2006 article “Sociologists in Kääriku” help to capture the nature of the meetings and understand why their participants often remembered them throughout their lives [9].
At a meeting of sociologists in Kääriku in 1968. From left to right: Hulot Vooglaid, Leonid Stolovich and Boris Firsov behind Rem Blum’s broad back
So, a word to Leonid Stolovich:
“ Kääriku , in Russian Kääriku , is the name of the place where the University of Tartu sports base was located, not far from Tartu. This village has gone down in the history of many areas of knowledge. Perhaps, Kääriku received the greatest fame due to the fact that the so-called Tartu-Moscow, or Moscow-Tartu, school of semiotics, headed by Yuri Mikhailovich Lotman, was formed and carried out there.
To Kääriku 1966-1969 also gathered sociologists who studied the theory and practice of mass communications in various aspects. This was the period of the formation of Soviet non-vulgar sociology, which was followed by a stage of its strangulation, fortunately not brought to an end.The development of sociology during these years proceeded against the background of such events as the “Prague Spring” with its hopes and the burial of these hopes under the roar of tanks that entered Prague. <…> Tartu and its environs remained a relatively free oasis, not yet covered by the sands of the desert of nomenklatura socialism. And as the inhabitants of the savannahs during a drought head to the still-dry lakes and rivers, the country’s leading sociologists flocked to Kääriku for a sip of freedom of speech, albeit not without carelessness. For the time being, the local authorities, while they themselves were not quite sure where the wind of the Prague Spring would turn, did not interfere with this.<…>
The topic of the first meeting of sociologists in Kääriku in October 1966 was “Methodological problems in the study of mass communication”. The topic of the second meeting in 1967 was “Personal value orientations and mass communication”. At the third meeting in 1968, the problem of “Personality and Mass Communication” was discussed. In 1969, the fourth and final meeting of sociologists took place. The desert was already threateningly approaching the oasis. ”
In addition to Stolovich’s words, I will cite Vooglide’s recollection, which was communicated to me in an e-mail.On the eve of the fourth meeting in Kääriku, the subject of which was abbreviated as “MM M”, Voglayda was summoned by the rector of the University of Tartu Fyodor Dmitrievich Klement and asked: “What have you done again, Vooglaid? Now they decided to hold a conference called ‘Marx, Mao and Marcuse’. ” Vooglaid noted that the rector was not informed correctly, the topic will be discussed: “Mass communications, mass culture, mass society.” The rector took a deep breath, sat down in a chair and said only: “Thank you!” And further Hulot commented: “They followed and it seems they were afraid, and for good reason.”
I will continue Leonid Stolovich’s notes: “These meetings were attended by the most significant sociologists of Russia: V.A. Yadov, B.M. Firsov, A.G. Kharchev from Leningrad, Yu.A. Levada, B.A. Grushin, L.A. Sedov from Moscow. L.M. came from Sverdlovsk. Arkhangelsky and L.N. Kogan with his employees, from Novosibirsk – V.Z. Kogan, from Latvia – A. Milts. He connected his methodological seminar to sociological discussions G.P. Shchedrovitsky is an outstanding specialist in the field of methodology and theory of thought. The philosophers I.S. Cohn, P.P. Gaidenko and Yu.N. Davydov. One of the sessions was chaired by Yu.M. Lotman, who amazed the participants in sociological discussions with his extraordinary delicacy (everyone said: “This is a real St. Petersburg professor!”).
Of course, Estonian sociologists played an important role in organizing these meetings and in discussing the problems of mass communication: J. Vooglaid and the laboratory of sociology at the University of Tartu, M. Lauristin, J.Allik, P. Wihalemm, A. Murutar, P. Kenkman, M. Titma. All of them subsequently became prominent political figures of the independent Republic of Estonia, albeit in different political currents. Tartu philosophers R.N. Blum, J.K. Rebane and others.
I was involved in sociological conferences not only because I was interested in the topics discussed at them, but as a scientific director of sociological research at the University of Tartu.I got to such a prestigious position for some formal reasons. In November 1965, I defended my doctoral dissertation “The Problem of the Beautiful and the Social Ideal” at Leningrad University, becoming the first and for some time the only Doctor of Philosophy in Estonia. As such, I was appointed to this “general position”. True, at that time I myself conducted sociological studies of the aesthetic and artistic tastes of schoolchildren, supervised graduate students who worked on dissertations in the sociology of journalism and art.
Sociologists and sociologists representing official and semi-official structures came to the Käeriku meetings. A. Shelepin himself signed a business trip to one of them. So we knew, in accordance with the aphorism of Stanislav Jerzy Lec, that “a person is not alone, let someone follow him,” but then this did not restrain us, although, as it turned out later, denunciations against us were written regularly. In addition, in our environment, initially so united and friendly, there was a split into sociologists who strove to honestly investigate the real social processes taking place in society, and sociologists who worked according to the principle: “What do you please!”.Sociologists of the first type were represented by the Ülo Vooglaid laboratory, supported by V.A. Yadov, B.M. Firsov, Yu.A. Levada, B.A. Grushin. She was opposed by another group of sociologists who organized the “Laboratory of Communist Education.” This group relied on supporters of “tame”, or, more precisely, “handy”, sociology in Moscow, who began to conquer the dominant heights. The case ended in 1975 with the defeat and dispersal under the leadership of the Central Committee of the CPE and the KGB of the Vooglaid sociological laboratory, with the exclusion of the head of the laboratory from the party. “
Once again I will turn to the “dinaiks” – the funny stories of Vladimir Yadov, they are united under the heading “Hulo Vooglaid and seminars in Kääriku” [8].
They begin like this: “In the mid-1960s, Ülo Vooglaid, the organizer of such meetings, at the health center of the University of Tartu in Kääriku, organized various rallies. Leningraders, Muscovites, Siberians, and many others also came. Estonia was at that time a kind of window to Europe, since the Moscow authorities for the time being did not pay attention to these gatherings. “From Stolovich’s memoirs, we already know that very soon they paid attention to them, and even very intently.
Let’s continue to get acquainted with Yadov’s recollections: “Vooglayd arranged practical jokes. Once he announced that in the evening we would go to light a fire, make a barbecue with beer. You will have to go up a steep mountain, otherwise it is impossible, since there is a forest on the hill. The ascent really turned out to be not easy, about 30 degrees. We climbed for a long time. Igor Kon was pulled up and nudged by two of the most athletic. They made a fire, warmed up, got worn out, the Estonians sang their own, we – the Russians and the Ukrainian. The fun was darkened by the idea of going down in the dark to the road to the boarding house. It turned out that our dwelling was 100 meters away on the same hill on the opposite side of the road on which we set off. ”
Who knows the traditions of Estonia and who knew V.A. Yadova, I’m sure, understands that he could not get around the topic of the sauna. That’s the way it is:
“A sauna was set up in Kääriku, boys first, girls next when the temperature was lower. Once Shota Nadirashvili came to the seminar. Our Leningrad team presented for discussion the program of the “Value Orientations” project, which was later transformed into a dispositional project. The Georgians resolutely refused to go to the sauna. The temperature outside the window is at 20 degrees below zero. You can understand. Still managed to persuade. In the sauna, jokes were persecuted, Grushin asked a topic, for example, about animals and so on. Almost three competed: Boris Grushin, his namesake Firsov and me. Grushin outplayed us.
The time has come to plunge into the ice-hole that was cut in a small lake 10 steps from the sauna. The Georgian professors strongly opposed, Nadirashvili demonstrated a boxing stance. They persuaded me, especially since those who returned after the ice bath were cheerful and cheerful. After the sauna by the fireplace in the boarding house, Georgian colleagues were crying that no one in Tbilisi would believe their story about the Estonian sauna. A day later, at the close of the seminar, Vooglaid solemnly handed each of the Tbilisi residents an official document signed by the rector. It said that the rector thanks Professor Imyarek for his productive participation in the scientific seminar and confirms the fact of dipping in an ice-hole at a temperature of 22 degrees below zero. “
Plot two: the book of all Soviet and post-Soviet sociologists
Contents of V.A. Yadova on the methodology and methods of sociology – she was published in several editions under slightly different names – is known to almost all sociologists living today in Russia and throughout the post-Soviet space, but few know the story of her birth. Yadov told me about it in an interview in 2005 [10], and there are two main characters in it – the process of creating a book and Hulot Vooglaid:
“Hulot invited me to give a course on methodology at the University of Tartu and to publish the transcripts.<…> I soared. I live in a small hotel Park , on the second floor, I go down to breakfast, the hostess brings exactly my breakfast and also asks: “When will you bring coffee to your room?” Complete mortality. Another world. Estonian first party secretary Kabin covered his people. The Moscow partocrats did not understand anything until they were transferred. Gorbachev also. He arrived in Estonia after a visit to Latvia and says: “Dear Latvian comrades”. Then, after a tip from a livery lackey: “It’s bad that very few Estonians know Russian”.The Minister of Culture (a woman) makes a reply: “Michal Sergeich, who does not speak Russian here, does not know Estonian very well.”
So, I live in a family hotel, in the morning I give a lecture, by noon I listen to the audio recording, by the night – the text of a section of the textbook. ”
And everything developed like this. Yadov’s Estonian colleagues asked the rector of the University of Tartu to contact his Leningrad colleague with a request to send Yadov for a month to deliver lectures on “Fundamentals of Sociological Research.” Lectures were read every other day, from 4 pm to 8 pm, so that everyone could listen to them. The large auditorium of the main building was completely packed, with students sitting on the windowsills and on the floor. The lectures were taped, reprinted the next day and sent to Yadov at the hotel for editing. And now – Voglayd’s recollection of this work [11]:
“The last clean copies (second time reprinted text) Yadov received on the bus, which in two minutes should have left for Leningrad. Another couple of weeks went into the final polishing of the text. Then a courier came to Leningrad for the text, the text was reprinted on the latest typewriter on rotaprinted paper with a special frame, and two or three months after the start of the lecture cycle in August 1968, the first textbook of sociology was published in the so-called socialist camp. Why were we in such a hurry? The time was so changeable, and the event so important and dangerous, that every day on this path could be the last. We prepared the textbook before those who could (and should) ban it ”.
And Vooglide ends his story with the words that from wherever the book was sent, congratulations and orders for 400-700 copies came. But the entire circulation was 500 copies.
It is now clear why Yadov wrote that the book “Methodology and procedures of sociological research”, which was born in Tartu in 1968, with a gray paperback warmed his soul more than subsequent editions – with a hard cover and a photograph of the author on the back.
And in conclusion – full of humor and love for the Teacher and Friend, the story of Voglayd, everything in it – however, approximately this is how Vladimir Yadov described this situation to me. What Hulot said at the same time shows Yadov’s wide popularity in Estonia and the vitality and naturalness of his behavior. Many tried to help Yadov live on the farm, but he still strove to be independent. I bought myself a moped and started driving for bread. He tried to overtake the dogs running along the road, and if he could, he looked over his shoulder at the stragglers, but one day he did not notice a stone on the road.Result: several fractures, plaster cast, crutches for the whole summer. In this form, he ended up in the nearby town of Rakvere at the bus station, waiting for the bus to return to the farm after the doctor. He was noticed there by a woman who in her student years listened to his lectures, and began to call friends. “Imagine,” she said, “what we saw here. In Rakvere, a tramp sits at the bus station, next to him is a hat and crutches, and his face is just like Yadov’s! There are similar people in the world! ”
In another case, I would tell about Hulot Vooglaid – a scientist, educator, personality – more pretentious, but now I can’t.Such a story would not have been accepted by his living and departed colleagues and friends.

90,000 Richie Adams – Richie Adams
American Basketball Player
Richie Adams (born March 15, 1963) is an American known for his basketball career at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), as well as his conviction for the manslaughter of a 15-year-old girl in his later years.
Early life
Adams grew up in Andrew Jackson’s housing project in the Bronx, New York. At 13, he discovered his love of basketball after flying to Hawaii to play in a tournament. He enrolled at Benjamin Franklin High School (BFHS) in East Harlem, where he will play with future National Basketball Association (NBA) player Walter Berry, as well as Gary Springer, Kenny Hutchinson and Lonnie Green, who are collectively credited with creating the BFHS.In the fall of 1979, he took first place in the national team. He played in the Artist’s Basketball Classics at Rucker Park.
College Career
After earning a GED from junior college in Massachusetts, Adams joined UNLV to play for the Runnin ‘Rebels basketball team coached by Jerry Tarkanian. With a center of 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 m), he was known as a sports player with great jumping ability who became famous seemingly out of nowhere. In addition to taking a season off in New York to deal with family problems, Adams starred in UNLV. During his career, he scored 1168 points and made 623 rebounds (at the time, his total number of rebounds was a high school record). In one game against Utah, Adams scored 37 points and made 18 rebounds, and it was assumed that during Adams’ prime he could beat Dennis Rodman. In the 1983–84 and 1984–85 seasons, his junior and senior seasons, respectively, Adams was named the Pacific Coast Athletic Association’s Player of the Year in a row.He averaged 12.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in the junior class and 16.1 and 7.9 rebounds in the senior class.
Professional career
After his college career ended, the Washington Bullets selected him in the fourth round (81st overall) of the 1985 NBA Draft. Adams never made it to the final squad, was laid off in training camp, and his professional career consisted of a short stint in the US basketball league, as well as a few select games in South America.Adams also briefly worked for the Continental Basketball Association, dividing the 1985–86 season between Bay State Bombardiers and Baltimore Lightning.
Litigation and murder conviction
Adams never escaped the street mentality he grew up in. He walked the path of self-destruction throughout college, and this continued even after he was drafted to the NBA team; the day after the Bullets chose Adams, he was arrested for stealing a car in the Bronx. He was charged with arresting a woman in Manhattan, stealing a wallet, and stealing another car. Adams used a lot of drugs (in particular, cocaine) and spent most of his basketball money on them.
In 1996, Adams was arrested for manslaughter after Norma Rodriguez, a 15-year-old schoolgirl, was found dead in a brutal beating on October 15 of that year. Authorities tracked down Adams to the crime, and two years later he was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He originally began serving his sentence at Rikers Island Prison before being transferred to upstate New York. His sentence will not expire until 2023.
