Kazan Arena losing roots | Sports on BUSINESS Online
Last night was marked by a loud sports sensation – the administration of the Kazan Arena spread a message that a new football lawn would be laid at the new stadium. The saga of several months, full of rumors and speculation, ended with the termination of the contract with the contractor – the Slovak company ENGO, whose activities rendered the field unusable, and the involvement of a new “lawn spreader” in the person of the well-known Moscow company Bamard on the market. When the field is ready for big football, what role did the PSO Kazan play in the unsuccessful choice and at what stage the certification of the arena in the RFU, the sports editors of BUSINESS Online found out.
THE LAWN MUST BE READY BY THE END OF JULY
As it became known yesterday, a new lawn will be laid at the Kazan Arena, preparatory work has already begun. It will be installed by Bamard. They did the lawn at the Lokomotiv stadium in Cherkizovo, Arena-Khimki and at the Petrovsky stadium in St. Petersburg. According to the press service of the Ministry of Construction of the Republic, “Bamard” participated in the tender for laying the lawn last summer, but then the Slovak company “ENGO” won the auction, now it was decided to attract a Russian company as, in fact, a fire option. The turf should be laid in the next two weeks, the stadium is cleaning up the old turf and the pebbles that the Slovaks put instead of sand as a base for the cover. Note that there are no visual problems with the grass. It is green and even, they even began to mark the lawn and cut it. However, on closer inspection, traces of rot and mold are visible, the turf itself is easy to tear out by hand, boots with iron spikes that football players put on would not leave a living place from it. It also takes 14 to 20 days for the new grass to take root. By the way, these days Rubin planned to hold the first training session at the new stadium. Rubin should play its first match of the new season on August 3 in Kazan against Spartak Moscow. Inside Russia, there is probably no better sign for the opening match of the arena. The most titled domestic club of our time, which attracts the attention of even a public far from football. Therefore, a full house at the stadium will be provided, but on the other hand, knowing what the red and white fans are capable of, questions may arise about safety in the arena.
The situation with laying the new turf at the Kazan Arena was commented to BUSINESS Online by the chief engineer of the new stadium contractor Bamard Alexey Kulish :
— I will tell you why this work is taking place. The practice of replacing the turf exists in all stadiums in the world when the football field is under heavy load. There is nothing difficult in this. As for the lawn at the Kazan Arena, it turned out to be infected or, rather, affected. The source of the damage is not clear. They did an analysis and found that there are three types of pathogenic bacteria that negatively affect the grass cover, preventing the development of the root system. There is both mold and midges. Understanding the cyclic stabilization of the lawn, which would be in good condition in the summer, the lesions that exist, in the fall, could begin to seriously develop on all the remaining grass. The only way to heal the field are the events that we are now holding.
— What kind of activities are these?
– This is a production process that includes the replacement of the top grass turf, the introduction of new biological material, fixing, leveling, etc. In our case, we have to remove the turf to a certain depth and lay a new one to replace it.
— What terms did the customer set for you? Is there an internal understanding of how long this process will take?
— Yes, there is an internal understanding, the deadlines are, as always, tough. I hope that we will justify the expectations of the customer. The lawn that will be brought to Kazan is already 2.5 – 3 years old, respectively, it already has a good root system. We invited a specialist from Holland who will carry out the installation. Not just installation, but also cutting the lawn in order to obtain homogeneity in color. The lawn will come in special refrigerators-refrigerators.
– And yet, in terms of timing. Is there a chance for Rubin to play a home match of the Russian Championship on August 3 against Spartak Moscow at the Kazan Arena?
— We are faced with the task of making it practical, not theoretical. For our part, we are confident that this game will certainly take place.
— What can you say about the lawn itself, and how long will your cooperation with Kazan Arena last?
— The lawn is grown in Russia, but using the most modern technologies. 75-80 percent of the lawn that will be laid at the Kazan Arena is grown on sand. A rather experienced greenkeeper works in our headquarters, he arrived in Kazan, and is engaged in construction and coordination, trying to create the most favorable conditions for the grass. With the help of our agronomist, we will take care of the lawn until the game, which is scheduled for August 3rd. As for further operation, this issue is now, of course, being resolved. For us, this is quite difficult, because there are very few specialists of this level. We have not yet concluded a service agreement, this issue is still open,” Kulish said.
The question of what will happen to the lawn in the future remains open. According to BUSINESS Online, the installation of pool baths at the arena will begin in the spring of 2015. Recall that the Kazan Arena will be the central venue for the World Aquatics Championship and temporary stands for 12,000 seats will be installed in the stadium bowl. The stadium says they are working on several options for moving the turf so that the grass has fully served its life. Note one significant point. In Kazan “Rubin” and at the Central Stadium, they do not comment on the story of the replacement of the lawn at the main arena of the republic. Only in private conversations is it noted that 39the days that remained before the match were enough to carry out all the declared work and the lawn was ready for the game. The main thing is that there is no force majeure.
SLOVAKIANS HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO THE DOOR
Over the past almost a year since the closing of the 2013 Universiade, there has been a lot of talk that the Kazan Arena is about to host football matches. And, although the infrastructure of the stadium has long been in perfect order, as journalists could see even during the student games, everything rested on the quality of the lawn at the handsome stadium.
Since September 2013, work on it has been the responsibility of the Slovak company ENGO, an agreement with which was also signed by PSO Kazan Ravil Ziganshin , which carried out construction and installation work for the construction of a football field with the installation of engineering infrastructure and lawn device. These works should have been completed by December last year. As BUSINESS Online was informed by the Ministry of Construction, Architecture and Housing and Utilities of the Republic, ENGO won an open tender for these works. The Ministry of Construction was the customer of the work, and the football arena itself did not actually take part in the selection of the Slovaks, nor in the work on the lawn …
In the fall of 2013, alarming news began to arrive that not everything was in order at the Kazan Arena and that the contractor was simply not coping with the duties assigned to him. At the same time, news came that Rubin was either sending an application for certification of a new stadium to the RFU, or not. At the same time, in the club itself, in private conversations, very serious doubts were expressed about the imminent move of the Ruby to the ultra-modern arena from the good old Central Stadium.
In the meantime, the sowing of grass, which was done by ENGO specialists, turned out to be unsuccessful, and in November a new contract was signed and, in agreement with the contractor, Kazan Arena agreed with the possibility of replacing the top layer of the lawn. Moreover, the lawn was spoiled due to a banal human oversight. The field was covered with artificial turf, snow fell on it, and the grass had to calmly overwinter. However, the Slovaks decided that the winter in Russia was too cold and turned on the heating. By the way, the company’s projects include mainly Ukrainian stadiums, which are located in a better climatic zone than Kazan. It is possible that the lack of experience in northern latitudes played a cruel joke on the contractors. So, due to the heating turned on, part of the grass burned down, and part began to rot due to excess heat.
In March 2014, grass was re-sowed with guarantees from ENGO that the football field would be ready by the end of May, when the football stadium itself was to open with a friendly match between the national teams of Russia and Slovakia. And this was publicly announced by the Minister of Sports of the Russian Federation Vitaly Mutko . However, the RFU commission and personally the head coach of the team, Fabio Capello , pointed out that the football field did not meet the necessary requirements for the fight, and it was moved to St. Petersburg.
Specialists of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Rosselkhoztsentr” in the Republic of Tatarstan conducted laboratory studies of the lawn. The results of the study showed that plants are affected by Fusarium infection, which causes diseases of the root system and the plants themselves. According to the conclusion of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Rosselkhoztsentr, the natural covering of the football field is not ready for operation, after which it was decided to terminate the contract with ENGO.
SLOVAKES WERE NOT PAYED FOR THE LAWN
Note that the Slovaks performed a whole range of works, among which were also the installation of aeration, drainage, lawn watering and heating. There are no complaints about these works. According to the representatives of the stadium, the lawn acceptance certificates were not signed with ENGO and the bills for this type of service were not paid. We managed to contact the director of Kazan Arena Radik Minnakhmetov. She said that the new contractor would be paid for the work of laying the lawn from the funds that ENGO had not paid, and therefore no additional funds would be needed for the entire procedure.
— The ENGO company undertook to solve the problems with the lawn at its own expense, which, as you know, arose last fall, — Minnakhmetov said. “They tried with the help of reagents to cure the soil and that part of the lawn that remained after the winter problems. Sowed new seeds. They had to make a quality field by May. The grass turned green, but the disease could not be completely removed from the soil. Now we have a weak root system and poor quality lawn. The disease began to develop actively, and it was no longer possible to delay, therefore they decided to change the contractor. Now the work will be carried out by the Bamard company. A well-known company in Russia, and it should have time to lay a new lawn and let it take root by the end of July. We will not raise additional funds. The money that we did not pay to ENGO for the unfulfilled lawn work, we will pay to Bamard.
— Will there be litigation with ENGO?
— This situation will be dealt with by the Ministry of Construction. They were government customers and PSO “Kazan”, they are the general contractors of the work. Courts and proceedings with ENGO are not the competence of Kazan Arena. We regret that a long and unpleasant story is coming out with the lawn – of course, the image of the arena has suffered significantly. I really wanted to open the stadium with a match of the Russian national team, but now we are trying to be in time for the first games of Rubin in the new season. We will make every effort, but we would not like to talk about specific dates now, we are afraid to jinx it and would not like to make empty promises.
— In the fall, there were other problems with the certification of the stadium, breeding fans, for example. Have these issues been resolved?
– We have permission to put into operation, the stadium has eliminated almost all the comments of the RFU, but, as you understand, the question of the quality of the lawn remains. We hope for understanding and assistance from Rubin, a dialogue has been established with them.
Last year, in addition to the lawn, there was a serious issue of fan flow and safety at the arena, which held the opening and closing ceremonies of the Universiade. It’s one thing to hold a concert, and another thing to play a football match. The level of requirements varies. Different lighting, team dressing rooms, TV and press areas, as well as many small related issues are needed. Within six months, all of them were solved. Only local representatives of the main broadcaster of the Russian football championship have been to the stadium three times over the past month and a half, and TV malfunctions have been almost completely eliminated. Also, work has been done in the part of the fan sectors, where metal barriers have appeared. The stadium, in turn, already makes it possible to book skyboxes and luxury boxes, and Rubin secretly confirms that they have drawn up a ticket program in two versions. Classic for the Central Stadium and new for Kazan Arena. Only one question remains – when will the lawn be ready, especially since the stadium management already has permission to put the facility into operation. The question of the prestige of the republic is important.
