What’s under the armor: the history of the Under Armor brand
The history of the famous sportswear brand Under Armor began in the basement, continued in the van, and now it is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sportswear. Basement T-shirts
Starting a business in a basement is a typical story for many American brands. So did Kevin Plank, the founder of Under Armor. In 1996, as the captain of the football team in Maryland, USA, he noticed that within a few hours of the start of the game, the cheap cotton T-shirts of his teammates were soaked with sweat and stuck to the body. It was very inconvenient and interfered with the way you should play, so Kevin set out to do something about it.
Parallel to playing football, Planck was delivering flowers for the holidays, and that is how he earned the money he needed to start his own sportswear startup. Kevin took a close look at breathable fabric technology, which was just beginning to develop at the time, ordered seven different T-shirts, dressed teammates in them, and began collecting data. As a result, out of seven T-shirts, one was chosen – No. 0037 – it was in it that the football player felt as comfortable as possible. This T-shirt became the prototype for the creation of the first size range of the new brand. The brand itself, by the way, was then called Body Armor.
T-shirts were sewn in the basement of Kevin’s grandmother, and distributed by him personally – from the trunk of a car traveling around the city. As sales picked up, Planck bought a small van and drove down the Atlantic coast. The result of such a trip was earned $ 17,000, with which Kevin Plank bought an office in Baltimore, where he moved from his grandmother’s basement.
Any whim for your money
Although it started with a simple short-sleeve t-shirt, under Armor’s lines soon included sweatshirts, long-sleeve models and more. And all because Kevin never told customers that he did not have any item in his assortment, he simply took an order, and then made sketches and sewed new clothes on them. The demand for things grew, and at 19In 1996, several serious contracts were signed with the young company.
Already in 1997, Planck began to introduce innovative technologies and developments into his clothes. This is how a special fabric was created that kept warm in the body of an athlete, all-weather clothing. Each new model line was tested on students or schoolchildren who were given free of charge, and changes in cut or type of fabric were made based on user feedback.
Then it was time to conquer big markets. And, as it is impossible to do without advertising, Plank sent out his T-shirts to famous football players with requests for feedback and, possibly, to be photographed in them. So the Under Armor T-shirt appeared on the cover of the popular USA Today magazine.
But the most effective advertisement for Kevin Plank’s clothes was her appearance in the movies. First, the company’s logo was seen in the movie “Any Sunday” with Al Pacino in the title role, then Keanu Reeves appeared in an Under Armor T-shirt in the movie “Understudies”. It was 1999, and that year the company’s sales rose to $750,000. Later, the brand’s clothes appeared in the cinema more than once or twice, becoming, for example, an attribute of the Fast and the Furious franchise.
Not only T-shirts, not only for men
Since 2000, Under Armor’s popularity has skyrocketed. Contracts were signed with the NBA and NHL, the company signed a partnership with the US Olympic team, famous athletes participated in commercials. A series of commercials with the corporate slogan I Will became a kind of anthem for fans of a healthy lifestyle in 2003.
In the same 2003, Under Armor launched its first line of women’s clothing, and advertisements began to appear not only brutal, muscular male athletes, but also elegant athletic girls. In the commercials, by the way, not only famous athletes appeared, but the first black American ballerina Misty Copeland.
The next logical step in the development of the Under Armor brand took place in 2006, when the company began producing sports shoes and accessories. Football boots came first, followed by baseball, softball, and lacrosse shoes. The emphasis was on quality, original design and affordable prices. In sneakers from Under Armor, basketball player Brjndon Jones scored 50 points in a game. Profits from sales enabled Planck’s company to build its first flagship store in Annapolis. By the end of 2010, the company that started in Grandma’s basement had over $1 billion in annual revenue.
Going Beyond
Until the 2000s, Under Armor was a highly recognizable but still largely local brand, mostly sold in the United States. But in the current millennium, the company began to sell its things in the markets of Europe, Asia, Latin America. New fabrics and technologies are being developed all the time, clothes are becoming more perfect, lighter, stronger.
Since 2013, Under Armor’s sportswear has been high-tech. The company acquires the Endomondo app, special sensors are embedded in clothes and shoes that measure heart rate, blood pressure, calories burned and other indicators that are transmitted to a smartphone and processed by the app. As a result, it became possible to train even more effectively. The development of such technology was at its peak with the release of “smart shoes” in 2016, which recommend the athlete how to use energy as efficiently as possible while running.
Today, Under Armor is a high-tech apparel and footwear manufacturer that even has its own secret laboratory to develop and test the most advanced technologies. Only a few dozen employees have access to the laboratory, and every year a grandiose competition of ideas is held, the winner of which receives a grant for his development, and his innovation is implemented in new models.

Under Armor Technologies
In addition to such banal technologies as LEDs built into clothes and wireless communication, Under Armor has a lot of other interesting things. For example, the company has developed special pajamas for the accelerated recovery of athletes after injuries. They differ from the usual ones in that they have built-in reflectors of infrared radiation.
In 2014, the company introduced MagZip technology into its clothing – a zipper that fastens with one hand. And especially for runners, the brand offers special T-shirts made of breathable fabric with sun reflectors. This allows you to control your body temperature even in the summer heat, and a little compression makes these T-shirts even more comfortable. You can safely go for a run in the park or get on the treadmill in them.
Under Armor shoes use interesting Hovr technology. This is the so-called spring effect, due to which during the run the energy of movement is returned back to the runner, and it becomes much easier to run.
Rumor has it that in the near future Under Armor shoes will not be sewn according to the size chart, but will be printed on a three-dimensional printer exactly to the customer’s foot. This can make it perfect in every way and set a new fashion in the production of sports shoes.

How a knight dressed
First, ordinary clothes were put on – cotton pantaloons, woven leggings, a linen shirt and a vest. Such a kit protected the body from rubbing against the metal parts of the armor. Leggings were fastened to the belt with special fasteners and garters – they didn’t know suspenders in the old days, and they didn’t even come up with a codpiece with a zipper.
Then came the turn of the gambeson (underarmor). It was cut like a waistcoat or caftan and consisted of 4-6 layers of linen fabric tightly fitted to each other. The gambesons were thick enough to stop the glancing blow of a knife – and yet they were practical, comfortable and allowed the body to breathe. Since the 14th century, they gradually came into fashion, so that richly decorated gambesons were worn in peacetime as stylish outerwear.
Then the knight put on greaves and sabatons. Contrary to common myths, the metal covered only the front of the thigh and lower leg to provide mobility. This was mainly due to the fact that the knight spent most of the battle on horseback, and the inner side of the thighs (there is the inguinal artery, hitting which threatens death from hemorrhage) reliably protected the croup of the faithful horse. The metal completely covered only the knees so that the enemy could not cut them or knock the bone out of the joint with a well-aimed kick.
Sabaton are “galoshes” made of steel lamellar plates. Feet in combat are one of the most vulnerable parts, and injuring a foot was sometimes tantamount to suicide. Therefore, they were armored carefully and completely, leaving no open areas for an enemy blade or spear. Sabatons were fastened to the plate shield on the lower leg with the help of fasteners.
Mail is an indispensable element of any plate armor. And this is not surprising: in order not to hamper the mobility of the knight, even the most advanced armor of the late period was forced to leave open areas on the joints and in the places of the natural bend of the limbs. Hitting them was one of the few chances to put a knight out of action, and therefore they became a priority target for any opponent. To protect themselves, the knights additionally protected the body with chain mail stockings, sleeves and shirts, sometimes double weaving. In addition, chain mail helped the gambeson and other clothing fit better to the body and evenly distributed the weight of the armor.
Finally came the turn of the upper plate armor. The cuirasses were made in such a way as to protect the vital organs – the heart and the abdomen. Later types of armor had an additional stiffening rib (these lines are visible in the figure), the thickness of the steel in which was further increased due to the crosshairs of the steel plates. Such armor could not be penetrated by any direct blow with cold weapons, especially if the armor was made of high quality hardened steel. Blacksmiths had to invent special anti-armor means – one of them was the monstrous flamberg.
Sometimes body armor consisted of several elements that were designed to additionally protect the warrior in battle. The “skirts” made of steel strips, shown in the figure, served as additional protection for the body of the rider – after all, the enemy speared from the bottom up, into the knight sitting on the horse, which means that the stomach and groin had to be especially protected.
The outfit of the knight was completed with auxiliary elements. Round rosettes protected the armpits and joints on the elbows, their shape allowed the blade to be retracted during an accurate thrusting blow with a blade or spear. The shoulder pads protected the shoulders, and the gorget encircled the neck and collarbones.
A helmet is the most important element of protection for any warrior entering a duel at close range. In Hollywood blockbusters, warriors wear a steel helmet or a chain mail hood right on their bare head – this, of course, is completely absurd. First, the knight tightened a thick hat made of several layers of linen (balaclava) on his head, tying it under his chin. It allowed the helmet to fit snugly to the head and additionally dampened the impact energy during a direct hit. A koif was often worn on the balaclava – a chain mail hood that completely covered the head and neck, leaving only the face free. Finally, on top of this, the knight put on the helmet itself, made of steel and equipped with additional protection elements – a visor, cheek pads, etc.
