Trick Shots That Help You Win Games

Trickshots aren’t just for showing off to your friends, although that is always fun. With the right understanding and decisions, you can use trickshots in practical situations to win games. It takes a lot of practice to have the right control over these useful trickshots but once you’ve mastered them, you will be able to play smarter and surprise your opponent.

With the help of images and a video, today’s article will go over 3 easy trickshots that you can use in your own game of billiard, using situations from game scenarios.

Hi my name is Florian Kohler, also known as Venom. Here with me is Jamillette. If you’ve been following this series, you’re probably pretty good at pool right now, so it’s time to have some fun and to go over some practical trick shots.

The first one I have to show you, I don’t really know what to call it, but it’s basically an indirect jump. This happens quite often, I’ve seen it many times and I’ve used it a few times.

Indirect Jump Shot: Jumping an Object Ball

Jumping an object ball can be useful in a match but be sure you have a good amount of table space because the cue ball jumps too.

Let’s say you have a situation like that and you can’t make the 8-ball in here. You can’t really make it here, the corner is impossible, and the 13 is blocking you. You really have no shot. This is a very easy and simple trick shot that you can do, it’s what I call an indirect jump shot. What we’re going to do is hit the cue ball into the 8 at a little bit of an angle and you’re gonna make the 8-ball jump over the stripes into the corner. It’s a very useful trick shot that applies in a real game. Try this 8-ball in the corner.

Impacting the object ball above the center line with top spin forces it into the felt causing it to jump over the obstruction.

Just like that. You could do that from anywhere at the table. It’s easier if you have more distance because the white ball has a tendency to jump, but it’s a very, very useful shot.

Indirect Jump Shot: Off The Rail

Jumping off the rail is a very useful shot when you don’t have other good options and it’s easier than you might think.

Now the next shot I have used before as a trick shot. I’m going to show you a jump off the rail. This comes up quite often too. Okay, so we’re going to put the white ball here, and a bunch of balls there so that we can’t really make anything. And let’s say you have the 5 ball right here at the other end of the table. Again, you could try to go couple rails but it’s very difficult when the ball is far away. You could do a direct jump shot, but you’re pretty close and it’s too close to really make it. There’s only one shot that goes really, which is an indirect jump shot.

Hitting down at a slight angle, contact the cue ball with lots of top spin and drive it right into the rail.

I’m going to use the cue ball to jump into the rail, to jump over the balls here, along the rail here, and make the 5 in the corner. Again, it seems pretty difficult but it really is easier than it looks. So what I’m doing is making a solid bridge, raising my cue a little bit (about 30 degrees probably) and trying put a little bit top spin on the white ball. Top spin is going to make the ball climb into the rail, and then it’s going to jump over. So I’m going to try to line it up, look at it. Just like that.

When aiming this shot, imagine that the rail is a mirror and you are shooting straight at the object ball in that mirrored image.

Z-Bank Shot

One of the other shots that comes up very often in the game of pool, is what we call the Z-bank. Let’s say you have a ball that’s blocking your pocket and a lot of problems for you that really limit your options. I can’t make it here, and to bank it seems impossible. To cut it is really impossible here and to cut it there it’s even crazier. Let’s say it’s even closed in that pocket here. So you’re basically in trouble. What we can do here is another classic trick shot, it’s what we call the Z-bank.

What I’m going to do is hit the cue ball into the 5, and the 5 is going to go one rail, two rails, three rails, and back in the middle. To do that you’re going to use the mechanism spins that I was telling you about in a previous lesson. So you’re going to play on that.

The left spin from the cue ball gets transferred to the object ball initially spinning it right. Spin is reversed when it contacts the rails allowing the ball to come back to the side pocket.

I’m going to apply a lot of left spin to the cue ball, so that the 5 ball gets a lot of right spin. The right spin takes control and opens up in this way, towards the side pocket. To make this shot a little bit easier for you to understand we’re going to just remove all the balls to simplify it. Get rid of everything. So, I will try to make the 5 ball. A lot of left spin, try to aim about right here so you barely miss the 15, and the spin should take it right into the side pocket.

As you can see, it doesn’t work great on this table because the felt is brand new and it slides a lot. The spin is going to grab a lot more once you play on an older felt. But, these are all the little tricky things that you have to learn by yourself, through practice.

The 20 Coolest Trick Shot Videos Ever | Bleacher Report

When you throw a football off the top level of a sports stadium toward a basketball hoop on the field, you don’t expect it to go in.

But sometimes, when you practice enough, it does—and that puts you into the Trick Shot Hall of Fame. 

Some of these videos are so cool and so unlikely that you have to wonder if they’ve been doctored (I’m talking to you, Sidney Crosby). Most likely, though, they haven’t been, and these guys and girls are just uniquely and freakishly talented. 

Here’s a look at some of the coolest trick shot videos out there.

Carli Lloyd is a good person to have on your team when you’re, say, trying to win the gold medal at the Olympics. She did score the game-winning goal for the U.S. back in 2008 in Beijing and helped the women’s team garner gold yet again in London last summer. 

But she also has some unique shooting skills that are good for impressing the crowds—and her teammates—during practice, even if they may not do anything for her at game time. 

Bleacher Report caught up with Lloyd before the Olympics last summer to watch her show off her trick shot reel. When you can make water bottle explode with the sheer force of your shot, you know you’re doing something right.

Dude Perfect pretty much owns the online space dedicated to spectacular trick shot videos, and this one is no exception. This summer, they orchestrated a special Olympics edition of trick shots to help count down the days until the Games kicked off in London. 

Here, we have a compilation of Olympic-themed tricks—complete with cameos from the likes of cyclist Giddeon Massie and gymnast Joshua Dixon—to help get the national pride percolating in London.

Make sure you catch the gymnastics-crossed-with-basketball shot at the 1:50-minute mark—it’s a highlight.

Gonzaga’s men’s basketball team couldn’t just sit back and watch the rest of the world make awesome trick shot videos; these guys had to get in on the magic. 

And if you can get past the cheesy and embarrassing superhero-y intro to the video, the tricks are actually pretty impressive. 

From behind-and-over-the-basket shots, to shots made from inside a trash barrel, to a Johnny Manziel-esque attempt from the top floor of the arena, these guys prove they have skills. Hopefully, someday soon, those skills start paying off in March Madness.

Wayne Gretzky is sick of seeing wannabe-internet sensations try to make names for themselves online with lame trick shots. 

So here, we have the master himself “showing the scrubs exactly how it’s done.” 

Back in 2011, the hockey legend teamed up with College Humor to make an incomparable trick shot video of his own in which he lofts a puck into the flower pot in front of his door, prevents his garage door from closing by wedging a puck under it at the last second and shoots a puck off the wall in order to move an ottoman under his feet.

Now that’s how it’s done—complete with the necessary trash talk.

Tennis players want to get in on the fun, too—and these guys are pretty impressive. 

A couple of weeks ago, Hamburg trick shot sensations The Courooons released their first compilation of the year, filled with crazy tennis-themed shots. 

These guys can volley a tennis ball into one public trash bin and out of the other. They can knock water bottles off their partners’ heads with a ball. They can volley the ball into a trash can while riding a rotating platform that will make you dizzy just by looking at it. 

These guys may not be winning Wimbledon any time soon, but there’s something to be said for their accuracy.

Phil Mickelson wants you to be able to get in on the trick shot fun, too. So here, he offers a hilariously earnest instructional video in which he demonstrates his own favorite trick shot. 

The PGA legend spends a lot of his time practicing his chipping, and he doesn’t always have time to fetch his own balls. That’s why you’re supposed two chip two balls at the same time instead of one. 

Mickelson shows you how to chip two balls from a sand trap and onto the green, then get one of them to roll right back to you in the trap so you don’t have to waste time retrieving one. 

What a nice guy.

A few years ago, the Boston Bruins ran a Mini 1-on-1 series during home games in which youth hockey players would take over the ice at intermissions to show off their skills in front of the TD Garden crowds. 

But once this kid came along, the fans weren’t all too interested in seeing the pros return to the ice. 

This nine-year-old future NHL superstar dazzled the crowd and absolutely schooled his opponent with a behind-the-back trick that left the goaltender’s head spinning. 

If Jack Edwards had been in the booth for this one, he definitely would have lost his mind just like he did during that Rangers game.

Table tennis may not have gotten as much attention in London last summer as gymnastics or basketball, but these trick shots put some of the others to shame. 

Bleacher Report joined forces with U.S. Olympic members Erica Wu and Lily Zhang prior to this summer’s Games in London to get a first-hand look at the best tricks that can be done with a paddle. 

From bringing down an entire tower of Solo cups with one ping pong ball to hitting balls into each of the cups without missing, beer pong-style, these girls know how to impress with their skills.

Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber may not have the utmost confidence in his trick shot skills, but maybe he should. 

Weber stood in Section 317 of his stadium—that’s high up, just for reference—and attempted a shot down onto the ice and into the net. When the puck left his stick, it didn’t look like it was going in, but what do you know? It was a goal. 

From the look of how many pucks were on the ice when the winning one finally trickled in, it may have taken Weber a while to get the hang of this trick, but hey—practice makes perfect.

We’ve seen some golf, hockey, ping pong, soccer, tennis and basketball trick shots—but what about frisbee?

That’s what Dude Perfect frisbee aficionado Brodie Smith is there for. 

Given how limited my own frisbee skills are, I found these to be some of the most impressive tricks of the bunch. Smith, the resident frisbee extraordinaire, attempted to mimic the Dude Perfect crew’s basketball trick shots with a frisbee instead of a basketball, succeeding with flying colors in most cases.

And the tricks look way more impressive with a hurtling lightweight disc than they do with a basketball.

Titus the Toddler has been in the news quite a bit lately because of his highlight reel. Some are even calling him a (very) early favorite for the NBA draft. 

The two-year-old has been melting hearts and blowing minds worldwide with his basketball skills, all captured on camera and posted online. Titus can do more than make a basket, which would be good enough for most babies. He can make a basket from anywhere. 

From the stairway, from the couch, behind the back, over the head, behind the backboard—he can do it all. Titus is clearly a legend in the making. 

Watch out, LeBron.

Geoff Swain may not be as well known as Phil Mickelson, but he’s renowned worldwide in some circles for being the World Golf Trick Shot champion. And this is why. 

As impressive as it is to be playing golf outside in the freezing cold while wearing flip flops, that’s not what makes this reel so spectacular. First, there’s his bouncing the ball on the club, all while explaining what he’s about to do—and given my hand-eye-speaking coordination, this is super impressive to me—but then, there’s the shot itself. 

After bouncing the ball on the face of an iron, Swain switches to a driver while the ball is midair and sends it straight down the fairway—and breaks off the head in the process. Now that’s power.

We’ve seen hockey pucks, footballs and frisbees hurtle from the highest points of stadiums into hoops waiting far down below—but this is the infamous shot that began it all. 

Dude Perfect’s Cory Cotton stood on the top floor of the Texas A&M Aggies’ football stadium back in 2009 and attempted to make history by sinking what he professes is the world’s longest basketball shot. The shot would be replicated time and time again thereafter, but this is where it began. 

Cotton sent a basketball from the upper deck of the stadium toward a hoop waiting on the sideline of the football field—and he improbably made it. 

So what if he used the backboard? This, right here, is greatness.

There are a lot of people out there who love to hate on Duke basketball, but it’s hard to hate on this. 

Well, kind of hard. You can probably enjoy this, as long as you ignore him saying, “This is Kyle Singler and I approve this message” at the beginning.

The former Blue Devil and current Detroit Piston presented us with this reel of trick shots back in 2010, displaying his ability to sink a shot from anywhere. He’s a big fan of the throwing-the-ball-straight-up-and-watching-it-land-in-the-hoop move, but he really can sink it from anywhere.

The stands, the weight room, the bench–and there’s even a tribute shot to Mrs. K.

Now it’s time for volleyball. 

Pro volleyball player Morgan Back teamed up with Dude Perfect and Bleacher Report this summer during the Olympics to show off her best moves. 

She can send a serve from way back, over the net and into a trash can. She and Olympic skier Bode Miller can single-handedly school the entire Dude Perfect team (and cause some serious bodily harm to the Dudes in the process). It took a few attempts, but she can knock a cone off one of the Dude’s heads. 

And of course, she can serve a volleyball into a basketball hoop because no Dude Perfect endeavor would be complete without that.

There’s a lot of skepticism out there about whether or not this reel is legitimate, but it looks pretty good to me. 

We know Sid the Kid is one of the fiercest competitors in the NHL, but apparently, he’s also one of the fiercest trick-shot propagators out there, too. 

Crosby’s shots can apparently move an NHL goal all the way off the line—which doesn’t seem too outlandish, though the commentators disagree. But what they’re really skeptical about is his ability to stand at nearly center ice and fire off shot after shot and knock a pyramid of pucks, one by one, off the wall. 

And when one wayward puck rolls along the wall, Crosby picks off that one in motion, too. Yup, totally real. As Mike Milbury says, I still believe in Santa Claus, too.

At this point, we’ve seen virtually every kind of trick shots except baseball trick shots. 

Now, it is time. 

Here, Connor Powers of the San Diego Padres organization shows off for a while during batting practice. He can hit off a tee and into a garbage can. He can hit a ball at a post and have it deflect back at the cameraman behind the plate, though it’s unclear whether or not that one was intentional. He can knock over the ball machine with his sheer velocity. 

Maybe this will be enough to get him up and out of Single A ball.

Now, we’re into the heavy hitters. 

There are a few quarterbacks out there who have so perfected the art of trick shots that it is virtually the only thing they are known for. Here, we have Monmouth College quarterback Alex Tanney trying to join that group of elites. 

Tanney is definitely good. He can stand waiting at a window on the top story of a house and throw the ball to a receiver in the bed of a truck—while it’s moving. He can stand on top of the library, throw over the Jumbotron and hit the goal post. 

His skills are impressive, but are they Johnny Mac-level? Not quite yet.

Earlier this year, Johnny Manziel stood in the very spot in which Cory Cotton attempted the longest basketball shot and tried to replicate it—with a football. 

The Texas A&M quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner isn’t scared of anything—not pressure, not the likelihood (or lack thereof) of one-upping one of the trick shot masters. And that’s how he turned this shot from a dream into a reality. 

With Cotton standing right beside him, Johnny Football sent the pigskin right into the basketball hoop waiting on the field. As if there was any way Manziel could turn himself into even more of a legend.

Before he became the Trick Shot Quarterback, Johnny McEntee was just a quarterback flying under the radar at UConn. 

Now, Johnny Mac is a legend. 

The original trick shot quarterback made a name for himself by attempting and succeeding in the impossible—hitting the back of someone’s pool stick with the football and thereby helping him sink the ball into the corner pocket, standing in the upper deck of the practice field and hitting a trash can at the 40-yard-line, opening the door to the field with the football.

May the legend of Johnny Mac never be broken.

Unlike traditional dominoes that are rectangular in shape, setting up OREO dominoes is much harder than it looks. They like to roll off and tip over, so it takes a very steady hand and a little bit of patience to set it up. Of course, when it was all said and done my son suggested I should have shaved the bottom off of each cookie a bit. That would have been too easy, right?! Besides, it was more fun this way.

‘Trick Shot’ Review – Putter Finger – TouchArcade

When a game has been revealed to be developed by one of the artists behind Monument Valley ($3.99), it has quite a lot to live up to. That game is an outstanding puzzler, but I’d wager about half of its appeal is the unique, wonderful visuals. It won a ton of awards and recognition–deservedly so–and I don’t envy artist Jonathan Topf for developing what could be seen as a followup of sorts. Sure, Monument Valley and his first solo outing Trick Shot ($1.99) don’t have much in common, but they are both puzzle games in their own way. And, of course, they’re pretty good lookin’.

The thing you’ll notice when you fire up Trick Shot for the first time is just how minimalist everything is. You’re immediately presented with a simple box and a small area with dotted red lines, all against a blank grey background. When you drag your finger in the dotted area, a ball appears with a line through it. Let go and the ball is fired, hopefully into the box. The line that appears through the ball represents the angle and power of your shot, and a ghost of your last attempt always remains to help dial in your next one.

And, well, that’s pretty much the whole game in a nutshell. You fire your ball into the box. If you fail, you try again. If you succeed, you move on to the next box. Sure, there are obstacles that get progressively more difficult to deal with, like wooden planks, fans, and teleporters. But in general you’re just bouncing your ball off of one or two things and hoping it goes into that box. When the mechanics are laid out on paper it may seem pretty simple and dull, but let me explain why it’s not.

See, we’ve all played games that have a few fun mechanics but look like garbage. You recommend it to your friend and they’re like, “This game? Uh… I don’t know.” And you’re all like “Dude! Just try it! It’s better than it looks!” Well, Trick Shot is the inverse of that. The gameplay (while fun) isn’t particularly original or deep, but the overall presentation of the game is so cool and smooth that it makes everything else about it feel way more compelling.

I’ll rattle off a few examples: I love how easy it is to play each level, with a simple swipe up or down to switch between the previous and next stages. I love how the ball changes each time you use it. I love that there are no penalties whatsoever, meaning you can just keep firing shot after shot until you get it right with absolutely no stress. I love the way it cleverly introduces a new way to play once you beat the game the first time around, without adding a new “mode” (and still allowing you to play the old way). I love that the level select screen is simply color coded so you can see at a glance what you have left to accomplish. And, of course, I love the visuals. Flat, rounded, modern, and utilitarian. It’s just a joy to play.

Trick Shot is not the most unique physics-based puzzle game I’ve ever played, or the most challenging (by a long shot). But it is nonetheless one of the best I’ve played in a very long time. It may be a case of style over substance, but only by a hair, since the game is quite fun even without the slick little animations and beautifully simple aesthetic. (It’s so simple, in fact, that part of me wishes it had a level editor to make your own creations–though another part of me recognizes that that would compromise the game’s purity of vision.) It may seem like a fairly basic package overall, and I suppose it is, but what’s there is really damn good–and easily worth the current two dollar asking price.

Each time you launch the game, it downloads and displays the End User License Agreement. It is an ASCII string stored in a static buffer. The buffer is filled from the server without checking if the line size exceeds the buffer size.

We took advantage of this so that downloading the EULA would overflow the static buffer enough to overwrite the global variable we needed. It just so happens that this variable was a function callback handler for a specific network packet. After installing this handler, we could send a network packet to trigger a jump to the address in the overwritten global variable. The address was a pointer to the payload code that we previously saved into the EULA data.

Important data was stored between the real end of the EULA buffer and the overwritten global variable, so the first task of the payload code was to recover this corrupted data.After that, everything returned to normal operation and the patch itself could be performed.

The difficulty was that the EULA text was copied using strcpy. And strcpy terminates the string when it finds byte 0 (which is usually the end of the string). Our line contained code that often contained 0 bytes, so we mutated the compiled code so that it did not contain null bytes, and had a carefully crafted piece of bootable assembly code in it to reverse the mutation.

In the end, the hack looked like this:

1. Sending an EULA that is too large

2. Overflowing the EULA buffer with various data and a pointer to the callback handler

3. Sending a packet to start the handler

goes to the loader to the code pointed to by the handler

4. Boot code decodes payload data

5. Payload is loaded and restores modified data

This trick had to be done on PS3: the Insomniac engine team had textures that we wanted to release along with the engine and tools. These included things like noise textures and data sources for full-screen filtering effects. For some unimportant reason, we didn’t want to distribute them as separate resource files, so we converted them to binary arrays and compiled them into an executable file.However, this solution had one drawback – we wanted them to be in a different piece of memory (visible to the RSX processor), so we had to copy them, and the space occupied by the original data would be wasted.

The PS3 toolchain had a layout feature that allowed individual segments to fit into RSX memory, but it required 1MB pages, which in our case would waste 700KB. Instead, we added a new data section to the executable to create a bss alias (the “bss alias” or “balias” section).In the finished assemblies, we had something like 3 MB of bss, so there was more than enough room to hide texture resources. We ran the code during the crt initialization phase to initialize the target memory, copy the resources, and then reinitialize bss with a value of 0.

Believe it or not, it worked! I had to tweak the code a little in order to secretly use bss and change the toolchain, but in general everything turned out to be quite simple.

Tamping cartridge

In 1993, I was finishing work on porting Desert Strike from 16-bit Mega Drive / Genesis to its humble little brother, 8-bit Master System.The game exceeded the required cartridge size by 12 KB, and we were not allowed to switch to the next cartridge size. Today it seems like 12KB is incredibly small, but in those days the problem was serious. During development, I planned the size of all sound and graphics assets, and they fit within their limits. The only aspect I wasn’t as strict with was the code. In those days, games were written in assembly language (in this particular case, in Z80 assembly), so I had only one option.I spent a week looking for redundant code and rewriting so that it takes up less memory (usually at the cost of increased CPU usage).

By the time I finished, the game was being placed on the cartridge, leaving only 98 bytes free! The game was recorded on ROM, and then the guys from the QA department tested it for several days, after which they sent it to Sega for certification. Unfortunately, it didn’t get certified the first time around, and the required fixes quickly filled those 98 bytes. If I’m not mistaken, when we released it, there were only 6 bytes free!

Towards the end of one project, we found that after a few hours of gameplay, the videos were not playing at the right moment.Fragmentation within one of the memory allocation heaps we created made it impossible to reliably allocate the large blocks of memory needed to play full-screen videos.

We needed to find a way to ensure we had the necessary memory. However, the problem was noticed at the later stages of the project and we could not risk implementing heap defragmentation, we did not have enough free memory that could be allocated exclusively for video playback, and it was inappropriate to take space from other systems at this stage.

We realized that during video playback many other systems were built, so we considered the option of “borrowing” the memory from them. However, such potential memory sources were either too small or also suffered from similar fragmentation problems. There was a lot of free space for the GPU, but for various reasons we could not use it for video playback buffers. Therefore, we needed a different source of space.

In the process of studying another problem, we identified a certain pattern of memory allocations within the main heap, where game resources were stored: when the game was launched, many resources were loaded from disk, after which they never changed in memory.Some of these resources were very large. None of these were required when playing the video.

This gave us an idea: what if we copy the contents of one of the large resource files somewhere else in memory? For temporary storage of a resource, GPU memory is ideal, then we can temporarily use the space in the heap of resources for video playback, and after its completion, copy the resource data back from the GPU memory.

This is what we did. We chose the largest set of animation clips used for one of the game’s characters (named Dalton).[Note. Lane: probably referring to 2013 game Fuse for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360] The animation system was disabled, the animation clips were copied into the GPU memory space, and the memory was transferred to the video playback system. At the end of the video, the animation data was copied back into place, the animation system restarted, and the game continued as if nothing terrible had happened. As a result, the implementation turned out to be quite simple, but the process was stretched over several frames to ensure reliable synchronization of all systems involved in this trick at every stage.

Since then, the memory for the video playback system has come to be called the “Dalton distributor” in honor of the character whose animation clip memory it fetched.

(Since then I learned that in the studio this is a kind of tradition – both stuffing various things into the GPU memory, and mistakes with allocating enough space in the early stages of the project …)

Anyone who has ever written a game for a console knows about certification issues.Most often, common sense and following the recommendations are enough for certification, but there are always one or two “requirements” that seem to be nothing more than a way to cause problems to developers. One such requirement that we had to deal with is that when a player decides to launch your game, it should display the first menu screen no later than four seconds later. If the executable file of the game is large, then only it may take two to three seconds to load it, and you still need to load a whole bunch of graphics and sounds to display the main menu.

In my game, it took 26 seconds from launch to the first screen, so I was already starting to feel a headache. My first challenge was to isolate everything that is required to display the menu, and delay the loading of global data until the moment it is actually needed. Suddenly, this optimization made a bigger impact on the game than I expected: loading time dropped by nine seconds. After implementing many more optimizations, I was able to lower it by another 10 seconds, but I just couldn’t get the game to load even faster.When I was discussing this problem with another engineer (the best, in my opinion, way to solve problems), it dawned on us.

That console had another requirement: the game must display two more screens before going to the menu system. Interestingly, user should not have been able to skip these screens for a given time . Let’s see – if we load only these two screens, and we load most of the menu data while the player is looking at these screens … then voila – we have 5.5 seconds to load and display the menu.

Unfortunately, this was still not enough to meet the list of requirements, so we asked to deviate from the rules a little, and we were given permission to do this (probably because we were already getting close to the required one).

I’ve been doing cinematic inserts for a series of racing games with a very long history. Our scenes were a mixture of a simple demo of starting grids and more complex active cutscenes.As we worked on the sequels, our ambitions and requirements for the scenes were constantly growing, but the technology did not keep up with them.

The thing is that the cars were animated by a “stuntman” from the QA department, who created the basic movement. The scenes were then modified in a 3D editor to adjust the time and place of the action, after which they were again exported to our in-game tool, in which all the physics and behavior of the engine were simulated when the video was played. A large amount of gameplay data was recorded in the scene, including information about pressing the gas and brake of the controller.All this was recorded into metadata in a 3D file, and then played back in the game. The idea was that such a circuit would also control the car audio system.

The problem arose a few sequels later when our scenes got very complex and combined hand-crafted car animations with recorded capture data. The old tricks of using engine metadata to control the playback of simple sound samples of car roars no longer worked – that data simply wasn’t there! The sound department could not do the post-processing of sound like in the film, because any car could be in any scene, depending on the choice and modifications of the player, so the sound had to remain procedural.By that time, our games had already received many awards for sound, and especially for the sounds of car engines, so we were determined to make the system work.

Closer to beta, the odds began to seem elusive, but thanks to the combination of genius and insanity from our Film, Sound and AI departments, a solution was found. Throttle and brake metadata was represented by the scale value of the cube in the 3D scene in float format. When “drawing” the curves in a keyframe editor such as 3DS Max, the artist could simply draw the desired sounds of car engines.Several people in the audio department began to study 3DS Max hard, and using their assumptions about what the engine roar patterns should look like, they drew them in animation, exported all the scenes and put everything together. The sound came out great, but after we had to create this hack at an accelerated pace, we decided that if we wanted to continue working on the next sequel on the same technology base, we would need something more reliable.

… Or at least that’s what I thought.After this game, I quit the studio and a few years later met with the sound engineer who joined the team after I left. I realized almost immediately that they hadn’t improved the technology, and he was working as an “engine roar artist” for the new sequel.

Working with an unofficial spec written by the author of the PS1 emulator, I found the basic pieces of data: the title, the icon image, and finally the save data itself. Unfortunately, decoding the raw game state data turned out to be a tricky process; after a few days I decided it would take much longer than I had planned.

So I focused on the data header instead. Thanks to the location of the icon (which is at a constant offset from the beginning of the file and the pixel data of which is easy to find in hexadecimal), I could clearly understand where the title starts and ends. If the continue menu can determine that the save is damaged, then it is probably only a broken title. I tested this theory by copying the header data from some other save I downloaded from the internet and pasting it in place of the header section in my wife’s broken save file.Then I saved the data back to the memory stick and loaded it.

It worked wonderfully. In the continue menu, the statistics of another save started to be displayed, but after loading the wife’s game was completely restored. From buying a DexDrive to successfully patching a save, the whole process takes about three weeks. One evening I started the game and showed my wife a menu to continue the game and a save with a strange name. She downloaded it and was amazed: her progress, characters, stats and items were all right.My wife was delighted, but before we could discuss it, she was already on the way to go through the next dungeon.
