Price Chopper and Tops Markets to merge
Syracuse, N.Y. — Price Chopper/Market 32 and Tops Markets plan to merge, creating an alliance of two iconic New York-based supermarket chains with nearly 300 stores across the Northeast.
The two companies announced Monday they have entered into a definitive merger agreement. The stores will retain their names, the companies said.
The new parent company will be headquartered in Schenectady. The Price Chopper/Market 32 and Tops Markets businesses will retain main offices in Schenectady and Williamsville and will continue to be managed locally by their respective leaders.
Tops spokesperson Kathy Sautter said the transaction is expected to close within several months, subject to regulatory approval.
Financial terms of the merger were not disclosed.
Scott Grimmett, Price Chopper/Market 32′s president and CEO, will be CEO of and serve on the board of directors of the new parent company, which will oversee the operations of nearly 300 Price Chopper, Market 32, Market Bistro and Tops Markets stores and collectively employ more than 30,000 people.
Frank Curci, Tops Markets chairman and CEO, will serve on the board of directors of the new parent company and as a consultant to assist in the transition.
Blaine Bringhurst, Price Chopper/Market 32′s executive vice president of merchandising, marketing and store operations, will lead the Price Chopper/Market 32 business. John Persons, Tops Markets president and chief operating officer, will lead the Tops Markets business.
“This merger marks a major step forward and collectively elevates our ability to compete on every level,” Grimmett said in a statement.
“It leverages increased value for our customers; advances shared opportunities for innovation; fortifies the depth of our workforce, community and trade partnerships; and ultimately accelerates our capacity to deliver a distinctively modern and convenient shopping experience. Given the vital role that supermarkets and their workforces play in our communities, particularly this past year, I am excited to lead the parent company of these two historic grocery retailers.”
Curci said the merger makes sense strategically and “based on the similar ways in which we each put customers first, go to market and treat our people. ”

Neil Golub, Price Chopper/Market 32′s executive chairman, said the merged companies will maintain their commitment to “sustaining and improving the communities in which we operate.”

With roots dating back to the 1920s, Tops and Price Chopper operate supermarkets across Upstate New York and throughout the Northeast.
Based in Schenectady, Price Chopper/Market 32 operates Price Choppers and Market 32 grocery stores and one Market Bistro, employing 18,000 people in New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It was founded by the Golub family in 1932.
In Central New York, it has stores in Clay, Cicero, Fulton, Oswego, Cortland, Oneida and Hamilton, and two in Syracuse.
Based in Williamsville, Tops operates 162 grocery stores in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont, including five that are run by franchisees. It is the largest private, for-profit employer in Western New York, with more than 14,000 employees.

Cortland County man facing burglary charge; allegedly stole from Tops Markets
ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – A Cortland County man’s facing burglary charges for allegedly trespassing and stealing from Tops Market.
The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office arrested 53 year-old Napolean Tetrault after responding to a call on Main Street in the City of Cortland.
Authorities say it was determined Tetrault took merchandise from Tops on two different occasions, and on one instance was trespassing.
He was remanded to the Cortland County Jail without bail.

Brief Narrative of Incident: On October 16th, 2020 officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 7-Eleven at 76 North Main Street in the City of Cortland to assist Cortland Police Department with an investigation. Over the course of the investigation it was discovered that the defendant, Napoleon Tetreault, had stolen merchandise from Tops Friendly Market located at 3932 State Route 281 in the Town of Cortlandville on October 15th, 2020. The investigation later revealed that Mr. Tetreault had been arrested and trespassed for stealing from Tops on 10/11/20. An arrest warrant was signed by the Cortlandville Town Court on 10/16/2020. Mr. Tetreault was arrested on October 17th, 2020 for the above charges. Mr. Tetreault was arraigned through centralized arraignment and remanded to the Cortland County Jail without bail. COVID-19 cases are still on the rise, setting records for new daily totals statewide and in the Mahoning Valley — where Cortland, Howland, Boardman and Canfield ZIP codes have the most cases — and health officials are imploring the population to forgo traditional Thanksgiving Day plans to curb the spread as threats of more shutdowns loom.
Cases catapulted past the latest record on Friday to 8,071, surpassing the previous record of 7,101 cases reported Thursday. In the Valley, Trumbull and Mahoning counties set records, too, with 155 new cases in one day in Trumbull County and 169 in Mahoning County. In a one-week period ending Friday, Trumbull County added 725 cases and Mahoning County added 762, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
The state reported 42 new deaths in the state Friday and three were in the Mahoning Valley, including two in Mahoning County and one in Columbiana County.
ZIP CODES
The ZIP codes in Trumbull County with the most cases in the last two weeks as of Friday were 44410 in the Cortland area and surrounding townships, 44484 in the Howland area, 44483 in Warren and 44446 in Niles. The four ZIP codes are the only ones in Trumbull County with 100 cases or more in the county. The 44410 ZIP code has seen the most cases in the past two weeks with 121. Based on population, that ZIP code also has the highest density of cases, according to the Ohio Department of Health dashboard. There were 118 cases in 44484, 116 cases in 44483 and 100 cases in 44446.
In Mahoning County, the 44512 ZIP code in Boardman has seen the most cases with 130 in the last two weeks, according to the dashboard. In the four ZIP codes with 95 cases or more over the past two weeks, the 44406 ZIP code in Canfield has the highest density of cases based on population at 112 cases. The 44515 code in Austintown has the second-highest number of cases, with 118, and the 44514 code in Poland had 95 cases, the fourth-highest number.

“It’s time to rethink Thanksgiving,” states a letter to the public from Dr. John Luellen, market president for Mercy Health and Dr. James Kravec, chief clinical officer for Mercy Health.
“We’ve heard it time and time again — we need to mask, maintain social distance, wash our hands and avoid large gatherings — but as evidenced by our ever-growing case numbers throughout the Mahoning Valley, COVID-19 fatigue has set in across our community,” the letter states.
“Even though hundreds of thousands of people across the country who have died from COVID-19 will not have a chance see their children graduate from college or hold their grandchildren once again, we’ve become numb to the numbers and other global news has replaced the urgency of this pandemic,” the letter states.
Asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 make it easier to spread the virus among social circles, the letter states.
“People often come into close contact with those who are COVID-19 positive but asymptomatic, which is one way COVID-19 continues to spread from bubble to bubble and across entire neighborhoods.”
The doctors are asking members of the public to take “bold” steps to save lives and instead of traditional Thanksgiving plans, “consider a smaller gathering with your immediate household. Consider gathering outside if the weather permits. Consider using technology to safely connect with friends and loved ones.”
The letter states the choice is a dire one.
“Now imagine the loved ones you’d have around your Thanksgiving table. Who are you willing to live without? No one, right? We challenge you all to rethink your Thanksgiving plans to ensure we put the safety of our families and friends first, as an act of love and gratitude for everyone we care about,” the letter states. “The time to make a change is now.”

COLD WAR METAPHORICS IN THE DIACHRONICAL ASPECT (EVIDENCE FROM USA MASS MEDIA)
Abstract. The article presents the results of a study aimed at studying the dynamics of the development of the metaphorical potential of the COLD WAR concept in political discourse based on the publications of high-quality press published in the United States from 1948 to 1987.The study showed that the components of the dynamic COLD WAR frame, under the influence of extralinguistic factors, become the source sphere and the target sphere of metaphorical transfer during the development of the concept. It was found that the areas that served as spheres-sources of metaphorical transfer of the COLD WAR concept are numerous: during the development of the concept, their number and remoteness from the original sphere, within which it arose, increase.

Abstract.The aim of present research is to develop a framework for a diachronic analysis of the metaphorical models of the concept COLD WAR in political discourse. The paper seeks to reveal some of the changes that the concept COLD WAR underwent within the period 19481987. The study shows that the components of the dynamical framework COLD WAR changed under the influence of extralinguistic factors and the concept was metaphorically reinterpreted. It was proven that through the course of time the number of metaphorical models of the concept COLD WAR grew and the spheres of its metaphorical interpretation became more distant from the initial sphere of global confrontation.

Introduction
The COLD WAR concept, which emerged with the outbreak of the Cold War in the late 1940s as a symbol of the global confrontation between world powers, continues to exist in modern political discourse. This “vitality” of the concept can be partly explained by the fact that at all stages of its existence it was metaphorically rethought and acquired new shades of meaning.
At the present stage of development of cognitive linguistics and research of political discourse, research of cognitive metaphor is becoming more common. A classic work on this topic is the work of J. Lakoff and M. Johnson “Metaphors We Live By” [29], in which metaphor is defined as a direct description of the phenomena of the inner world, with the help of which ideas about abstract concepts are formed at all levels of thinking.By J. Lacoff –
Fu and M. Johnson, metaphorization is based on the process of interaction between the knowledge structures of two conceptual domains – the source domain and the target domain. Thus, a conceptual metaphor is defined as “a typical form of transferring the attributes of one conceptual sphere to another conceptual sphere, i. e. a certain conceptual scheme that produces figurative (metaphorical) meanings of words and utterances ”[2, p. 15].
Many modern scientists pay attention to the research of cognitive metaphor, including on the material of the English language – A.N. Baranov [1], A.A. Ze-lenyaeva [4], O.B. Mangova [6], E.Yu. Makhnitskaya [7], A.Yu. Chaikina [12], N.A. Ches [13], N.G. Shekhtman [14] and others. E.V. Budaev notes that “in Russian studies, the descriptive approach to the analysis of political metaphors dominates, the desire to describe and explain the phenomena prevails, without giving his own (especially related to the political beliefs of the subject of the research) ideological assessment, which, of course, is not due to a lack of civic position, but with ideas about the criteria for the scientific objectivity of research ”[3, p.113].
It is important to understand that metaphorization in political discourse changes over time. According to E.V. Budaev, “the metaphor functions in political discourse in the same way as a living organism, possessing the properties of heredity and variability, interacts with the environment, ie. “Evolves” and “survives” along with other metaphors “[3, p. 97].
The aim of this study is to examine the metaphorical potential of the COLD WAR concept from a diachronic perspective.To solve research problems, namely: reconstruction of metaphorical models within the framework of the COLD WAR concept-scenario, studying the dynamics of their development and functional capabilities, the methods of conceptual-definitional, functional-representative and discursive analysis were used. The research was carried out on the material of publications of high-quality press, published in the United States in the period from 1948 to 1987.
It should be noted that the purpose of this study is to provide the most vivid and illustrative metaphorical models for the COLD WAR concept. On closer examination, a much larger number of metaphorical models can be identified.
Main part
Features of the COLD WAR concept. In terms of structure, this concept is a scenario concept or dynamic frame. The founder of frame theory is M. Minsky [8], [9]. A frame “is a hierarchical structure and can be viewed as a graph consisting of vertices and connections between them.The frame has several levels. At the top level of the frame, basic information about the state of the object is presented, at the lower level (terminals, terminal slots), specific values and data are contained. Each slot includes a condition that must be met when establishing a correspondence between values ”[5, p. twenty].
From the very beginning of its existence, the COLD WAR concept began to actively play the role of both a sphere-source of metaphorical transfer and a sphere-target, in the process of conceptualizing and categorizing the phenomena of the surrounding reality. In terms of S.M. Tolstoy is “left” and “right” motivation in relation to two motivational dimensions of a lexical unit: it can be both motivating (“right” motivation) and motivated (“left” motivation) [10, p. 192].

Temperature metaphor. The very phrase “cold war” is a metaphor, so the lexeme “cold” has been very often metaphorically rethought over the entire existence of the concept, and, as a rule, extreme meanings (both cold and hot) carry negative connotations, and a gradual rise in temperature carries a positive meaning , as evidenced by the choice of lexical units to characterize certain phenomena of reality.For example: MILITARY MEN WILL ANALYZE HOT-COLD WAR / The military will analyze the hot-cold war [35]; WHILE THE WORLD WAITS, jittering, for the Soviet Union to drop the other shoe, the cold war proceeds with an icy deadliness / . .. the cold war continues with icy deadliness [33]; … bring back the iciest days of the cold war, in contrast to the warmth generated by Khrushchev’s United States visit /. bring back the icy days of the Cold War, in contrast to the warmth that Khrushchev created with his visit. [22]However, “freezing” does not always carry a negative connotation; on the contrary, it often means a refusal to conduct an open (“hot”) war. For example: Cold War In Deep-Freeze? / Cold war in deep freeze? [23].
Climate metaphor. Closely related to the temperature sphere, the source of the metaphorical rethinking of the COLD WAR concept is the area of weather and climate, with the THAW target sphere playing an important role as a symbol of improved relationships.For example: The lowering clouds on the international horizon are worrying both Presidential campaign camps. The Republican leaders here and the Democratic strategists in Hyannis Port, Mass. , Are anxiously watching the coldwar barometer / Falling clouds on the international horizon cause concern in both presidential camps. Republican leaders and Democratic strategists … watch the Cold War barometer with dismay. [30]
Military metaphor.The military metaphor plays an important role in the functioning of the COLD WAR concept, and although the military vocabulary is more typical for the representation of the WAR concept, it was very often used to characterize the conduct of non-military confrontation, especially in the early stages of the Cold War. For example: A false show offriendship, in the view of many State Department officials, therefore, seems to be the most dangerous potential weapon in the Soviet arsenal / False display of friendship … seems to be the most dangerous potential weapon in the Soviet arsenal [37]; And as a reminder that the Cold War goes on we note that the National Guard in some States has started to wage war on Communism by conducting its own National Defense Strategy Seminars /. the national guard in some states started a war against communism … [21].
Gambling metaphor. Any confrontation, and especially the Cold War, is a competition, as evidenced by the fact that from the very beginning of the global conflict in the late 1940s. the Cold War was presented as a game (both gambling and sports). This metaphorical model is highly productive. For example: We have thereby checkmated the plans of Russia in Berlin just as we have checked the Reds in Greece, but there is no evidence yet that we have won the cold war. red in Greece… [19]. We can hope that Khrushchev is bluffing, but we cannot afford to gamble on it / We can hope that Khrushchev is bluffing, but we cannot afford to bet on it [24].
Religious metaphor. A significant role for the moral legitimization of the confrontation between the Western world and the USSR was played by the accentuation of the opposition CHRISTIANITY-ATHEISM. US actions to contain the USSR were described as
ideological “crusade” against communism.For example: Therefore, the question arises as to how this ideological crusade is to be met. It’s no good pursuing the negative defense of merely arguing that Communism is contrary to our way of life / Thus, the question arises of how this ideological crusade will be met … [27]. The trip to Europe and the holding of a conference in Moscow by the first UN Secretary General Trygve Lee was called a “pilgrimage for peace.” For example: Lie’s Moscow press conference came at the end of his “pilgrimage of peace” which began with conferences with President Truman and Secretary of State Dean… / Lee’s Moscow press conference was held at the end of his “pilgrimage for peace” … [15]. The buildup of nuclear weapons has raised serious concerns and has been described as the biblical Armageddon (The Cold War Armageddon). [26] The confrontation between the US and the USSR was described in religious terms, with the religiosity of US citizens presented as an undeniable advantage in the conduct of the conflict. For example: … The choice then is clear: brotherhood and unity in God – or eventual Communist enslavement / The choice is clear: brotherhood and unity in Christ, or potential enslavement by the communists [18].
Zoomorphic metaphor. The Cold War is rethought through comparison with a wild beast, for example: The fourth estate here in the nation’s capital is feeling the harsh breath of the cold war / The fourth estate here in the capital feels the heavy breath of the Cold War [38] and a poisonous snake, for example: After nearly twenty-five years of venomous Cold War, Soviet-American detente is still a fragile vessel which it behooves both sides not to try to overload… / After almost 25 years of a poisonous cold war … [39], which indicates the awareness of the danger of conflict and the likelihood that it could easily get out of control. Many researchers, in particular S.M. Tolstaya, agree that “animal” metaphors are often associated with negative, pejorative assessments of objects of the surrounding reality [11, p. 285].
Metaphor of the disease. Despite the extremely tense relations on the world stage, there was still an understanding that the confrontation needed to end, although it was extremely difficult.The Cold War was compared to malaise, an area close to everyone, regardless of their political beliefs and social status. Thus, the US media appealed to literally all strata of society, leaving no one indifferent. For example: With the temperature of the cold war rising swiftly to fever heat we can no longer ignore the possibility of explosion by May 27th … May 27… [26]. SOME FOULS have colds, one after another, all winter long, and sometimes in the spring and fall, and once in a while, even in the summer. Others go for years without a cold. So far as I know, the cold question is as unsolved as the cold war /. The problem of colds has not been solved, like the problem of the cold war [17].
Examples of “right” motivation for metaphorical transference.
Metaphor of domestic politics.Already at the beginning of its functioning, the concept began to be transferred to such spheres as domestic policy and regional foreign policy, in contrast to the sphere of global politics, within which the concept arose from the very beginning. The race between Harry Truman and New York State Governor Thomas Edmund Dewey has been compared to the Cold War. For example: Dewey Pushing a Cold War against Truman [25]. Also, internal political battles in government departments and committees were compared to the Cold War.For example: A cold war of partisan
politics between the Congress and the Executive branch won’t give them these goals. [36] A sidelight of the tax-cut affair is the “cold war” between presidential economic adviser W. W. Heller and Treasury Secretary Douglas Dillon / … the Cold War “between Presidential Economic Adviser Geller and Treasury Secretary Dillon… [32]. Has Cold War Ended Between Foreign Relations Committee and the State Department? / Is the Cold War between the Foreign Affairs Committee and the State Department over? [28].
A metaphor for regional foreign policy. With the acquisition of a regional character by the Cold War, the concept becomes a source of metaphorical expansion in a situation, although related to international relations, but far from the initial global confrontation between the superpowers.The confrontation is acquiring a local character, far from the original global confrontation. For example: SAYS RED CHINA IS WAGING COLD WAR WITH INDIA. Peiping has declared cold war on India, dubbing her expansionist and imperialist, and obstructing Indian trade in violation of the treaty / … China is waging a cold war with India. Beijing declared a cold war on India, accusing it of expansionism and imperialism … [20].
Metaphor of interpersonal relationships and family.During the development of the COLD WAR concept, the confrontation began to be transferred to the informal spheres of human life, in particular, to the sphere of interpersonal relations (A hair-pulling cold war is on between Pat Nugent – Luci Johnson’s fiancé – and her hairdresser, Jean Louis). hair pulling … [16]) and family. Generation conflict (Cold War Between the Generations [34]) and problems arising in marriage (Albee unearths truth and its relevance in this “Cold War” of married life /… “Cold war” of family life … [31]) were compared with confrontation during the Cold War, characterized by maximum tension, but devoid of open conflict.
Conclusions
Thus, we can conclude that the COLD WAR concept is a dynamic element in the system of conceptualization and categorization of everyday reality, and the metaphorical rethinking of this concept plays an extremely important role in its development and functioning.On the basis of the studied material, it was possible to find out that the COLD WAR concept in the course of its development became the object of both “left” and “right” motivation of metaphorical transfer. Examples of “left” motivation are metaphorical models such as temperature, climatic, military, gambling, religious, zoomorphic, as well as the metaphor of illness. “Right” motivation is represented by models of domestic policy, foreign regional policy and family. This indicates that the concept, in the course of its functioning, was tightly included in the everyday consciousness of representatives of the American people and from the very beginning was perceived not only as one of the elements of global politics and diplomacy, but was also extrapolated to spheres of life more familiar and close to the average American citizen.
