Head of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the Russian Student Sports Union (RSSU) Oleg Vasilyevich Matytsin – on the preparation of a sports reserve in the country, the importance of student competitions, as well as the rules in life and sports.
– The state is very attentive to the issue of preparing the Russian sports reserve. The Ministry of Sports, the Federal Reserve Training Center, the Russian Student Sports Union – we all actively support young athletes. After all, these people are the future of our country. They are potential candidates for national teams, it depends on them how successful Russia’s performance at the Olympic Games and World Championships will be.
From how attentively we will treat our youth, what conditions we will create for them to be successful and feel the care of the state (accessible gyms, affordable participation in competitions), they will be such worthy members of society.
Today, the Ministry of Sports creates good conditions for the training of sports reserves not only in big cities, but also in the regions. We understand that the majority of talented children are not born in big cities, plus many talented leaders and organizers work there. So our state policy is aimed at a more or less balanced development of the regions, the creation of new reserve training centers and the provision of opportunities for children to go in for sports and be included in the reserve orbit in order to represent the interests of the country in the future as members of national teams.

– To what extent are students involved in the sports reserve training program? Is it planned to expand cooperation with student sports as part of the preparation of the reserve?
– The system of university sports consists of two equally significant areas of activity.
The first, which does not apply to the preparation of the reserve, is mass sports. Its task is to involve as many students as possible in physical education and sports. After all, sport in itself is a unique means of balanced development of the body. No matter how intellectually gifted a person is, no matter what education he receives, but if he is not healthy, then he will always have some limitations in the realization of his knowledge, his education.
The second direction is just the formation of a reserve of national teams. Thanks to joint activities with the Ministry of Sports, significant positive adjustments have recently been made to the unified all-Russian sports classification. Now, according to the results of student competitions, children can be awarded sports categories and titles. The importance of the results of participation in the All-Russian and World Universiades has also increased. According to statistics, about 60% of the participants in the Olympic Games are students.
Therefore, while the athletes have not yet become members of the national teams, university sports are the best platform to demonstrate your abilities and prove that you have the right to get into the elite of sports. The guys themselves note that it is important to feel the atmosphere. In fact, the Universiade simulates the atmosphere of the Olympic Games. Maybe with less politicization, tension, the pressure of the need to win medals, but the very spirit and skill level of the participating athletes allows us to say that this is a very important stage in the formation of an athlete.
The President of Russia also pays great attention to student sports. We know that following the results of the Universiade, the President invites the winners and prize-winners to a reception, emphasizing the importance of the future of these guys. So student sport is, without a doubt, a very important part of the preparation of a sports reserve.
– What are the current joint projects with the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Reserve Training Center?
– Several projects.
First, I want to remind you of the All-Russian Universiade, which we have been holding since 2008.
Another important area that we are implementing together with the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Education is the formation of a single action plan that will allow us to understand the hierarchy of all competitions. This is very important for universities, as there are many events and the rector does not always understand where they need to send the team.
I am also sure that such projects as student leagues have a great future. The most famous is the basketball league. It was a successful pilot project, and now the student volleyball league is developing no less successfully, it is planned to create a hockey league. In April, the Presidential Council for the Development of Physical Culture and Sports is to be held, and the topic of the development of hockey, and in particular student hockey, will be considered there.
– How original is Russia in the field of sports reserve training and organization of student competitions?
– Different countries have different attitudes towards the system of university sports.
Of course, the Soviet, and now the Russian model, is more focused on using the university sports platform to train the reserve. There are countries for which student sports (as well as school sports) are the organization of mass competitions.
We know that Soviet and Russian athletes have always been and continue to be leaders of the World Universiade, which means that our model is successful.
The system of university sports and state support in Russia is celebrated by both the international and European sports communities. Last year, the Russian Student Sports Union was recognized as the best student sports federation in Europe and the world. And this is due to the high level of organization of competitions in our country, a large number of athletes, and, of course, thanks to the results of Russian athletes, which are worthy of respect.
Yes, we are studying the experience of the Chinese model of organization of sports development, both American and Polish. But I am a supporter of the need to honor traditions, study best practices, but eventually find your own model.
And today Russia, in my opinion, is at the forefront of the student movement. That is why we brilliantly held the Summer Universiade in Kazan, and now we have been entrusted with the Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk in 2019. These are significant factors for the development of student sports in the Russian Federation.
Of course, development is largely associated with the construction of sports facilities. You can encourage students to go in for sports as much as you like, but if universities do not have playgrounds, stadiums and swimming pools, then all calls will remain calls. Now we are talking about making a federal program for the construction of sports facilities in universities. I hope that it will be implemented, then our students will have more opportunities to lead a sports lifestyle.
– What does sport give to young people? Why is it important to exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle?
– If a person goes in for sports, then he forms a certain model of behavior.
I see sport as a model of life. In sports, we learn the principles that help shape personality. The main thing that sports gives is the ability to play by the rules. People may speak different languages, belong to different faiths and have different cultural traditions, but they come to the same site and learn to respect the rules. Despite your inner convictions and any preferences, you say: “I am a member of the sports community, I respect its rules and play by them: I respect the opponent, I respect the referee, my coach.” A person goes through a school of falls, desires, motivation, self-realization. Sport also teaches to play in a team, and life is also a team sport. No matter how strong you are, if you do not have communication skills and you do not know how to understand your partner, then you are unlikely to be successful in life. I am sure that sport is the most unique means of upbringing and education. We must remember this and use it for the benefit of the future of our children.

Total more than 420,000 schoolchildren and college students took part in sports events. This was reported by the Department of Education and Science of Moscow.
The final sports event of the year was the school sports festival, which took place at the Moskvich stadium. It was organized by the Moscow Center “Patriot. Sport” of the Moscow Department of Education and Science and the Department of Sports.
Winners of the city contest “The Best School Sports Club” were awarded at the festival. Its participants were 500 school sports clubs and 49 student ones.
– A school sports club is an effective mechanism for developing and popularizing a healthy lifestyle, cultivating the talents and abilities of students, – said Ilya Madilov, head of the mass sports development department of the Patriot.
Sport Moscow Center. – Schoolchildren and college students participate in competitions as athletes, try on the roles of coaches, sports judges, organizers, fans, volunteers, journalists, commentators, photographers and cameramen.
The club “Evolution” of school No. 2127 became the best at the end of the year, the club “Zvezda” of school No. 1474 took the second place, the club “Olympian” of school No. 1409 closed the top three. Moscow Publishing and Printing College named after Ivan Fedorov, the club “Bulat” of the College “26 KADR” won the silver, and the bronze – the club “Legion” of the College of Communications No. 54 named after P. M. Vostrukhin.
– I have been playing basketball for 11 years. During the year, my team and I took part in various competitions, tournaments, sports events, including the Basketball Day festival of the Patriot.Sport Moscow Center. I also fulfilled the TRP standards and received a gold badge of distinction. For me, sport is a part of life, and the team is a second family, – shared Kristina Finaeva, an athlete from the Priority MIPK sports club, a student at the Ivan Fedorov Moscow Publishing and Printing College.
Pupils showed sports skills at all-Russian competitions. At the city stage of the volleyball tournament, the girls’ team of the Evolution club of school No. 2127 and the boys’ team of the Olympian club of school No. 2031 won. Therefore, these teams performed at the All-Russian stage of the volleyball tournament in Kazan in 2022, and won.
In April, the girls’ team of the school sports club “Armeets” of the capital’s school No. 1287 won the all-Russian stage of the school sports basketball league “IES-basket”, having previously beaten the rivals at the city stage. The team of the student sports club “Prioritet MIPK” of the Ivan Fedorov Moscow Publishing and Printing College took first place in the 3×3 basketball competition among boys and girls at the V All-Russian Festival of Student Sports “ASSA.FEST”, and the team of the Olimp club of school No. 41 became the winner of the All-Russian mini-football competition “Full football to school” among girls’ teams in 2009‒2010 years of birth.
