Jay Buchanan refuses to fit into the format, considers the blues a national material and marvels at the beauty of Russian women.
The leader of the California band Rival Sons told Izvestia about this on the eve of concerts in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
– Your performance causes a storm of discussion among Russian fans Rival Sons . Many musicians, coming to us, rely on the fact that their music is almost unknown here. Play Do you adapted program ?
– On this tour we play a set of all seven albums. There will be hits and new works. As far as adaptation goes, each show is unique in nature. Even if we played the same set in every city on the tour, it would still have an improvisational approach.
— Do you have any idea about Russia, perhaps something interesting happened to you during that visit when you worked in Moscow with Black Sabbath?
– I must say that I was amazed at how beautiful Russian women are, it’s almost scary to see such beauty.
As if the best art in the world was collected in one place and it all came to life and just started to walk around.
– You are young people who started playing when rock and roll was not at the top of the charts. Does this mean that the path to success is only believing in what you are doing?
— The path of any artist should be based on faith in what he does and on the personal need to do it. If something is vital for you, it is “yours”, you cannot live without it – everything will work out. I’m sure if we tried to fit into the format it wouldn’t work.
– How does a young band feel when they are called to support such pillars as The Rolling Stones , Black 9000 7 Sabbath , AC / DC Alice Cooper Aerosmith Judas Priest ?
— You’re right: besides the ones you mentioned, we’ve had the honor of working with Guns N’Roses, Deep Purple, KISS, Lenny Kravitz, Queens Of The Stone Age – almost every genius in the genre.
It is a great honor for us to share the stage with the legends and play for their audience. When it comes to anxiety, we don’t worry too much about what anyone thinks or says about us. Our goal is to play sincere music and do it well. We play each other first and the audience is a nice bonus.
— While your records are usually found in the blues section, each of your albums demonstrates knowledge of almost all areas of rock. How much has not yet been said in a genre that is considered exhausted?
– Regardless of your aspirations and intentions, you always become a hybrid of influences. Everyone wants to be original, but genres have parameters, and the trick is to respect those boundaries. Only then can you successfully go beyond them. In rock and roll, the last word has not yet been said. It will change, as it has done many times before.
— What advice have you taken or will take in the future?
– My parents gave me advice to be myself.
I have followed it throughout my life. Thanks to this advice, I made music my job.
– There is a video on the Internet where you perform Black Sabbath War Pigs and Paranoid songs, and it is obvious that they are iconic for you. What else determined your future?
– It would take too long to answer, but I will try to be concise. The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Axis: Bold as Love had a profound effect on me as a child. I definitely have to name The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, which has become a huge event for me. And then there’s Joni Mitchell’s Blue and Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, which just stuck with me. These records are excellent examples of how people speak clearly and sincerely about their state of mind.
– There are blues and rhythm and blues bands all over the world, but the United States remains the birthplace of the genre. What qualities of the American bluesman are laid down at the genetic level?
— Rhythm and blues are just part of our national fabric.
There are many deltas in the world, but there is only one Mississippi delta.
– Now you have everything a successful band needs: great records, friendly criticism, a huge number of fans, but judging by the fact that you are rushing forward like a crazy train, this is not enough for you. What do you need to calm down and relax a little?
– I will sing until my last breath, until my eyes close forever. I like to stay busy. Hard work suits me. So I see no reason to relax.

The lead single “ Nobody Wants To Die ” is a fiery, energetic number with catchy riffs and melodies. No wonder he got a lot of popularity on the radio. Although the second track of the album would be the perfect opening. The bluesy “ Mirrors ” is a great groove song, though more subdued than the aforementioned “Nobody Wants To Die”.
