In the first author’s version of “Boris” there is neither a magnificent Polish act with a love line, nor a scene of a popular uprising near Kromy.
Here everything is focused on the problem of power and conscience. And the reading along the way of fragments of Nikolai Karamzin’s “History of the Russian State” was intended to emphasize the historical drama. The director Vitaly Fialkovsky made pictorial “folk pictures”, paying, however, a tribute to conventionality along the line of costumes. Under the double-headed eagle of the Russian emblem hanging in the air, on an empty stage in the light of spotlights, there is a throne. Behind the throne, the choir sits (or walks) on tiered benches, actively gesticulating. There are theater brackets with clothes of the 16th century, they, presumably, symbolize the timelessness of what is happening. As the curtain rises, MDT actress Elena Kalinina sits on the throne with her legs crossed, wearing a cap with her long flowing hair. This is the Voice of History, which reports: in Rus’, “intrigues in the Duma, self-will among the people”, Godunov is an enlightened, but immoral ruler, his “subjects are worthy of power” .

“Cap of Monomakh”, a white patriarchal cockle, a scepter with an orb, icons and banners, halberds in the hands of soldiers and other signs of antiquity – strokes over the “costume” indication of our days. Male characters (the vast majority of them in the opera) are dressed in black shirts and trousers, Grishka Otrepiev wears a huge cross for show, Tsar Boris is dressed in a red paramilitary frock coat. But the mise-en-scenes are built realistically, as in a traditional “costume” performance, which is why the “semi-dressing” of the characters seems unnatural and raises the question: is this on purpose, or was there not enough money and time to complete the design, and decided to leave it as it is?
Sergei Leiferkus (Boris), using the peculiarities of the first edition (in which the part of the tsar is written in such a way that a baritone can perform it), served pangs of bad conscience in large strokes – and succeeded in this. The aria “I have reached the highest power” was reminiscent of opera legends about Chaliapin.
Add to this excellent diction, so that even the final, whispered remark of the king, “I’m sorry,” was heard in the last row of the gallery. By the way, the soloist of the Mikhailovsky Theater Boris Pinkhasovich (Schelkalov) also showed excellent diction (in addition to a deep, beautiful voice). Suren Maksutov (Grishka) also understood every word, which is a rarity on our opera stage, where, as a rule, it is just right to write Russian titles for Russian operas.
The music, of course, is captivating – mournful sadness, “ragged” recitatives and sing-song melodies, alarm call and bell ringing, excitement of the hungry people and psychological breakdown of the “owner” of the country are heard in it. Mussorgsky’s score was often altered, considering the author’s orchestration technically imperfect, ascetic and too “rough”. Only in recent decades the situation has changed, “roughness”, on the contrary, have become especially appreciated. So the sensitive Yurovsky treated Mussorgsky not as an amateur in need of corrections from the masters, but as an innovative creator of harmonies and timbres, without which there would be no Stravinsky and Shostakovich.
And he took the next logical step: he decided to play Mussorgsky in the manner of his time.
The project involved the participation of musicians from the famous London Enlightenment Orchestra, performing music on authentic instruments. Thirty British orchestra members (mostly wind and string accompanists) came to the Mikhailovsky Theater and, together with the conductor, gave the sound an unusual color, despite the fact that half of the performers consisted of musicians from the Mikhailovsky Theater and the St. Petersburg Camerata orchestra.
As a result, the ideas of the opera were concentrated in the music, and not on the stage, with its rather banal arrangements. Sometimes, however, the sound of the orchestra seemed a little louder than it should have been, and because of this, the voices, and even more so the words of the singers, were almost indistinguishable, which is a pity – after all, Mussorgsky’s speech is no less important than music. But the annoying detail is not the main thing.
