The feat of Russian midshipmen on the ruins of Messina was captured by photographs published for the first time

“Messina was shaken by underground strikes. But the first on the scene of the tragedy were Russian sailors ¹ .

Two months before that, on October 17, 1908, the Baltic midshipman detachment under the command of Rear Admiral Vladimir Ivanovich Litvinov (battleships “Tsesarevich”, “Slava”, cruisers “Bogatyr”, “Admiral Makarov” and 135 ship midshipmen of the Naval Corps on board) went on a training voyage to the Mediterranean. On December 28, the detachment anchored in the roads of Augusta (a port on the east coast of Sicily, 70 miles south of Messina). Around 5.30 in the morning, the watchmen heard a powerful rumble and felt unexpected excitement. A combat alert was announced on the ships, but, however, they quickly hung up.

And in the evening, the captain of the port and the Russian vice-consul A. Makeev arrived at the commander of the detachment, who was holding the flag on the “Tsesarevich”, who informed about the earthquake and conveyed the request of local authorities for help. Litvinov telegraphed Petersburg about what had happened and, without waiting for an answer, on the night of December 29, ordered to weigh anchor and proceed to Messina.

Give away the last shirt

At 7 o’clock in the morning on the roadstead of Messina, a terrible picture opened up to the eyes of the sailors. Almost the entire city was destroyed. The 13th-century cathedral, which survived the 1783 earthquake, collapsed. Fires broke out in many places. Ships thrown by the wave lay on the shore, the embankment and the port were in ruins.

A telegram went to St. Petersburg:

“… The size of the disaster is enormous. The city is badly damaged. Sent doctors and a team to provide assistance” ² .

The second telegram read: “… There are thousands buried and wounded. Russian ships are busy digging people out. We are helping the victims. Today I sent the cruiser Admiral Makarov to take 400 wounded to Naples” ³ .

Works spread throughout the city and were carried out without rest and without shifts. At night, the ruins were illuminated by the powerful searchlights of the warships. The low quality of urban development – cheap mortar, lack of metal fastening of beams – caused huge casualties and greatly complicated the work of sailors. The skeletons of the walls could collapse at any moment. The Messinians, recovered from the wreckage, later recalled that “… sailors … rushed to the most dangerous places and dug up people” ⁴ .

Writer and journalist M. K. Pervukhin ⁵ , who settled in Italy since 1907, daily sent reports to the editorial offices of Russian newspapers ⁶ . At home, they saw the tragedy through the eyes of Italians:

“… The Russians not only helped, they gave everything to the fugitives, including their own spare shirt. … Women and children from the dead cities still flaunt in sailor jerseys, in sailor jackets, in officer’s jackets. There are no German or English things on the fugitives. There are Russians … <...> I will never forget that only Russians saved me “ ⁷ .

Midshipmen and marauders

Our sailors also had to face looting:

from them the streets … the sailors began to shoot them on the spot” ⁸ .

“During the excavations, many valuable things were found. Nobody (from the Russian rescuers. – Auth.) took anything and did not appropriate even knick-knacks, while everyone around was robbed, and they had to get a revolver to force the looters to leave the loot. <...> Midshipmen also went out one night to catch marauders” ⁹ .

In six days “…about 1800 buried wounded were dug up and bandaged and about 1800 were transported by all ships to Naples, Syracuse and Taranto…” ¹ 0. Members of the expedition wrote home: “…Everyone looked for the sick: officers, sailors and midshipmen; some supplied water, others straightened mattresses. <...> We bandaged the wounded, washed them, gave them water and fed. <...> Our sailors turned from diggers into sisters of mercy “ ¹¹ .

January 3, 1909, the ships of the detachment left the raid of Messina.

Square of Russian Sailors

On February 17, 1909, the city council of Messina decided to perpetuate the memory of Russian sailors by renaming one of the city’s squares and erecting a monument there. And on April 9, 1909, on Great Saturday ¹² , Nicholas II with the words: “You, admiral, with your sailors, in a few days did more than my diplomats for my entire reign” ¹³ received at breakfast in Tsarskoye Selo Admiral V. I. Litvinov. Later, the emperor awarded a number of officers and doctors of the Midshipman detachment with orders, and in May 1911, by the decision of the Italian king, orders were awarded to officers and 3170 silver medals to all participants in the campaign.

Among the emperor’s papers, there was also an envelope with photographs taken by one of the officers of the detachment, as well as by foreign members of the rescue expedition. The signatures for each of the photographs on the back, made in the same handwriting, suggest that the package was handed to the emperor by a rear admiral or one of the diplomats.

And what about the monument? In the spring of 1911, the Italians presented a small copy of it as a gift to Tsarevich Alexei Nikolayevich. But in the erupting era of world wars and revolutions, there was no time for monuments. And only 9June 2012 – after a solemn joint service in the Cathedral of Messina with the participation of the delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, headed by Bishop Nestor of Korsun and the naval parade – the opening of the monument took place on the square, which received the name “Square of Russian Sailors” (Largo dei Marinai Russi) ¹⁴ .
