The newest from Cascade – The S Helmet
With Syracuse, Albany, and Maryland leaking photos of their new lids for the NCAA Tournament, we here, at Universal Lacrosse, are pleased and excited to share with you the newest helmet, the Cascade S. The S helmet is the first helmet produced by Cascade since July 1st, 2013, when the R was released.
The features on the new S helmet will bring your game to the next level. On the comfort side, the S offers new XFlo Ventilation technology that allows for greater air flow and comfort. The S also offers three different types of padding inside the helmet to maximize comfort and protection. The new Tri-Liner system includes Gen4 EPP foam, NV3 Foam, and Seven Technology foam. Gen4 EPP foam is engineered to manage force impact in the front of the helmet. NV3 foam in the top of the helmet provides maximum protection to the crown of the head while maintaining shape and comfort under impact. The seven technology foam in the back of the helmet compresses on impact to displace energy within seconds to protect the player and maintain shape.
The S also comes with a one piece, Supermono shell. This one-piece shell and visor design keeps the helmet rigid and in place while shifting the center of gravity to the middle crown, keeping the helmet balanced and aligned. The S series dual-material jaw also helps to provide stiffness and safety.
A new and exciting feature of the S helmet is the vision bar. Unlike the standard eye level bar on the R helmet which is thick and bulky, the new vision bar, which comes standard on all S helmets, has been flattened to allow for a greater field of vision, so you will never lose sight of the ball.
The S helmet comes in all the same colors as the R, with the additional Metallic Gold shell finish, and can be customized for team orders or individual purchase. Proudly made in the USA and with a one year warranty, the new S helmet by Cascade drops on July 16th, 2017 for individual and bulk orders.

How A Netflix Producer Helped Exonerate Man Accused Of Raping ‘Lovely Bones’ Author Alice Sebold
“Lucky” seemed to have all the trappings of a successful new show. “You” actress Victoria Pedretti was set to star as the bestselling author Alice Sebold in a series aimed for Sundance distinction and a Netflix deal, according to the Daily Mail. “13 Reasons Why” director Karen Moncrieff was also attached to the project, based on Sebold’s 1999 memoir of the same name.
But former executive producer Timothy Mucciante, who claims he was unceremoniously fired from production, began investigating the real-life conviction of the man accused of Alice Sebold’s 1981 rape. Now, Mucciante reveals how his role in the investigation led to a wrongfully convicted Black man’s exoneration.
“It was obvious to me that something was off because he had no other criminal history,” Mucciante told NPR. “He basically got picked up off the street and thrown into prison for this.”
Anthony Broadwater served 16 years in state prison for the rape of Alice Sebold when she was an 18-year-old student at Syracuse University, as previously reported. He was released in 1999 after serving his sentence, and formally exonerated last Monday.
“I’m not going to sully this proceeding by saying, ‘I’m sorry,’” said Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick after the ruling. “That doesn’t cut it. This should have never happened.”

According to The Daily Mail, Mucciante became suspicious when he found discrepancies between the script and Sebold’s book.
“The script was very good, but it didn’t track the book as closely as I would have preferred, and that just made me wonder, ‘why is that?’” Mucciante said. “Why do we have to gloss over these facets of the book?”
In her memoir, Sebold, most famous for her book “The Lovely Bones,” detailed the author’s struggle to lead a normal life after the “harrowing, life-changing event,” according to her publishers, Simon & Schuster.
Story continues
Sebold believed she saw her rapist months after the attack walking down a Syracuse street.
“He was smiling as he approached. He recognized me. It was a stroll in the park to him; he had met an acquaintance on the street,” Sebold wrote in her memoir. “’Hey, girl,’ he said. ‘Don’t I know you from somewhere?’”
Sebold initially failed to pick Broadwater out of a lineup but identified him during the trial, which hinged on an expert witness’s findings over a pubic hair. The expert’s testimony was founded on what’s now considered junk science. According to Mucciante, Sebold exaggerated claims in her book that the hair passed 17/17 tests, but there was no such report in trial records.

“Certainly, I’m not challenging [Alice Sebold’s] story,” Mucciante told Daily Mail. “It’s just the prosecution of the wrong man.”
Mucciante said friction with production began after a Black actor (whose name he could not recall) resigned from his role as Broadwater because he didn’t want to perpetuate the stereotype tied to a Black man accused of raping a woman who is white. The director, Karen Moncrieff, opted to have a white man play the role of Gregory Madison, the pseudonym Sebold chose for Anthony Broadwater, according to Mucciante.
“I pushed back on it, and they pushed back on me pretty hard,” said Mucciante.
Following Mucciante’s departure from production, he began investigating the case when comparing the story to actual police files. He hired a private investigator, Dan Myers.
“The case was originally closed by the Syracuse Police Department because the police reports are… they’re not skeptical, but the description of the assailant is all over the place,” said Mucciante. “They closed the case saying, ‘there’s no way we can get a description of the assailant.’”
Mucciante said that Assistant District Attorney Gail Uebelhoer picked up the case at a time when there was a shift in how New York State approached sexual assault cases.
“There’s no doubting [Sebold’s] story, but how do you catch somebody when you have no idea what that person looks like?” said Mucciante.
Mucciante claimed Sebold wrongfully told audiences that her attacker had a criminal record.
“Anthony had no criminal record, even though Alice says in the book that he does,” he continued. “He’d had zero criminal record and had never been in a lineup in his life. He had just gotten out of the marines.”
Alice Sebold G

He also addressed Sebold’s claims that Broadwater, while incarcerated, hired a hitman to rape her roommate.
“I am not suggesting that that was fabricated, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how that information would come to her that was completely untrue,” said Mucciante.
According to Daily Mail, the wrongful conviction led Broadwater to live a Spartan life as a registered sex offender. He became a pariah around Syracuse and refused to have children because of the mark against him. Mucciante says that since his release, Broadwater had passed several polygraph tests.
“[Broadwater] wishes [Sebold] would apologize,” said Mucciante. “From a human point of view, that would be nice.”
Mucciante said Broadwater intends to sue Sebold and her publishers.
Meanwhile, private investigator Dan Myers claims he knows the real identity of Sebold’s attacker. Mucciante says he has forwarded Myers’ findings to the Syracuse Police Department.
Sebold and her team have not yet responded to Broadwater’s exoneration.
Powerboat procedures – Newspaper “Kommersant” Ukraine – Kommersant
Last weekend in Sicily, the final races of the Powerboat P1 world championship for boats in the SuperSport and Evolution classes took place. According to the results of the previous stages, the leader in the SuperSport class was the team “Ukrainian Spirit” by Viktor Shemchuk, who heads the national Association of Powerboat Sports. A group of 75 influential fans went to the city of Syracuse to support him.
In Sicily, the People’s Deputy (“Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense”) and President of the Association of Powerboat Sports Viktor Shemchuk had two tasks: local – to win the championship and global – to achieve one of the future stages of Powerboat P1 in Crimea. For this, the organizers of the races had to notice and remember Ukraine. On Thursday, a charter flight to Sicily was organized for the Ukrainian delegation, a special newspaper about races was published, yellow-blue T-shirts and caps were sewn, a batch of flags was purchased. Strongman Vasily Virastyuk and singer Oleg Skrypka called on to support the “Ukrainian Spirit”.
The journey began with a toast uttered by Mr. Shemchuk on the plane: “For the number of take-offs to always correspond to the number of landings,” which almost became prophetic. On landing, the plane was caught in a thunderstorm and circled around the island, avoiding lightning striking a couple of meters from the fuselage. But everything worked out, and in the evening the delegation settled in the five-star Grand Hotel Minareto overlooking the bay where the competition was to take place.
The whole next day, the fans were recovering from their experience on the plane. While Viktor Shemchuk with the rest of the athletes made test runs, the head of the supervisory board of the European Insurance Alliance, Vladimir Shevchenko, and his wife Tatyana in a rented Chevrolet went to Mount Etna and to the resort town of Taormina. Most of the guests decided not to go far and limited themselves to a walk through Syracuse: the old city, the Greek and Roman amphitheaters. On this excursion, the president of the Association of Jewelers of Ukraine Sergei Tsupko, the head of JSC “Kievgaz” Sergei Slepkan, the first deputy prosecutor of the Dnipropetrovsk region Vladimir Borisov, the owner of the company “Kaskad” Oleg Barannik and the owner of the company “Real” Vladimir Matsipura were noticed.
The next days passed between the hotel and the dry-pit in Syracuse, where guests went to cheer the athletes.Vasily Virastyuk entertained those around him, lifting the pilot of the Ukrainian team Aaron Kiantar on one arm. The chairman of the Ukrspirt concern, Ivan Yakovets, was surprised: “The name of our team, Ukrainian Spirit, can be translated as ‘Ukrainian alcohol’.”
“Ukrainian spirit” rose only to the third step of the pedestal, but the necessary effect, despite this, was achieved. The Ukrainian crew attracted the eye with a bright blue and yellow uniform, while the rest of the riders were traditionally dressed in white suits. And adding to this the fans in the colors of the national flag, it can be argued that the Ukrainians really stood out against the general background. Fearing to jinx them, no loud toasts were offered to victory on Saturday evening. But on the Day of Dnepropetrovsk, which fell on September 12, they drank while standing – many of the guests are from there or are doing business there. Tried local Tarucco wines, ate lasagna, risotto, mozzarella, rucola salad, prosciutto. The buffet table made Stanislav Vilensky, co-owner of the Alef company, nervous – he was looking for vegetarian food and found it difficult to determine by eye which of the dishes included meat.At this time, Viktor Shemchuk just said that to participate in the Powerboat P1 championship, you need to immediately invest about 1 million euros in the boat and the team, and then spend about 300 thousand euros annually on maintenance.
The “survival race” took place on Sunday. The fans were waiting for this race with special trepidation. Although the boat “Seagull” did not win the Saturday race, we still remained in the first place in the overall rating. Hopes were justified: from the first seconds “Ukrainian Spirit” broke into second place.Seeing this, the guests cheered up and began to chant “Ukraine” and “Chaika”. As a result, “Ukrainian Spirit” came out on top in terms of the total number of points. By the time the championship cup was presented, the support group went into a rage: they shouted hoarsely, sang the anthem, and presented the Italians with blue and yellow baseball caps. The head of the Powerboat P1 jury, Teddy Borg, joked: “There are now six world champions in the ‘Ukrainian Spirit’ team: pilot Aaron Kyantar is three times world champion, mechanic Angelo Tadeschi – twice, and navigator Viktor Shemchuk is now also a world champion – if you add up all the titles, you get six “.

Syracuse – Italy September 2014
In the first part, I talked about my acquaintance with Neapolis – the archaeological park of Syracuse. You can read about it here.
And now we go to Ortigia Island. There, where, according to legend, the city arose …
In our car, hot as an oven, we got to the island and parked it near the port in a paid parking lot. We had to explore the old city on foot.
Having detached myself from the car seat, I literally crawled out into the street. The first thing I saw was a fridge with drinks. I looked at this miracle of technology with longing and dreamed of coolness!
But I didn’t have to look at this oasis for a long time – the old town was waiting for us!
A short walk along the promenade and we enter the gate of ancient Syracuse.
And immediately we find ourselves in the labyrinth of ancient streets.
There are no houses of the ancient Greeks here for a long time. For 2 thousand years, the streets of the city have changed a lot …
History and time have not preserved the house of Archimedes for us. It is only known that he lived on Ortydzha, but no one knows exactly where. Probably on this street.
And maybe on this …
Old streets lead us to the Archimedes square (piazza Archimede). The fountain of Artemis flaunts on this square.
This work of art was created by Giulio Moschetti. The sculptor shone his fountain on the ancient legend of Artemis, Alfea and Aretusa.
According to the ancient myth, the river god Alpheus fell in love with the nymph Aretuzu and began to persecute her. But the nymph greatly appreciated her freedom and asked Artemis to hide her from Alpheus. The goddess, who appreciated freedom no less than a nymph, turned Aretusa into a source and sent her to the island of Ortigia. Alpheus, learning about this, did not retreat and, turning into a stream of water, rushed into the sea.He reached the shores of Ortigia and merged here with his beloved.
The junction of Alpheus and the nymph is called the source of Aretusa, but we will go here a little later, first we need to see the Cathedral of Syracuse. To do this, we go to Cathedral Square (piazza del Duomo).
The main cathedral of the city is very beautiful and unusual. It is dedicated to Saint Lucia, the patroness of Syracuse.
The baroque appearance of the temple evokes admiration and delight.Lovely cathedral! One of the most beautiful I’ve seen.
In addition, paganism and Christianity were united in the cathedral.
We go inside.
The columns of the ancient Greek temple are clearly visible here.
The Greeks dedicated their temple to Athena. Once upon a time, a shield of the goddess was fortified on its pediment, which served as a reference point for ancient sailors.
In the 7th century, the Byzantines came to Syracuse and turned the temple into a Christian church. To do this, they laid the space between the columns with stone blocks, and cut arches in the walls of the inner hall.
Giving the temple the appearance of a Christian church, the Byzantines turned the ancient temple back to the sea, placing the main entrance at the back of the pagan sanctuary.
In the following centuries, the cathedral was rebuilt several times. It acquired its present appearance in the 18th century.
As I said, the cathedral is dedicated to Saint Lucia, who was born in Syracuse and was beheaded and buried here. However, today only parts of her relics are kept in the Cathedral.
The fact is that in the 11th century the relics of the saint were sent to Venice. They were rescued from the Arabs who captured Syracuse at that time. Centuries later, Venice returned only part of the brush of Saint Lucia to Syracuse.
Next to the Cathedral there is a 17th century palace named after its creator – Vermexio Palace ((Palazzo del Vermexio).
On the left corner of the building, the architect left his business card – a lizard.
From the Cathedral we head towards the source of Aretusa.
At the exit from Cathedral Square, we linger a little near the Church of St. Lucia near the monastery (Chiesa di Santa Lucia alla Badia).
This church was built in the 15th century by the Spaniards in honor of saving Syracuse from hunger. According to legend, Saint Lucia was executed at this place.
We emerge from the maze of city streets and find ourselves near the source of Arethusa.
This spring is a natural freshwater pool.It is noteworthy that it is separated from the sea by a very narrow strip of land.
In ancient times, fresh water fell from a cliff into the sea, forming a waterfall. This is what attracted the Greeks. Seeing a cascade of water cascading into the sea, they decided to moor here and found a city.
The source of Arethusa can only be admired from above. In addition to the fish and birds living here, papyrus grows in the spring.
This plant was brought to Sicily from Egypt, but papyrus took root only here, in Syracuse.
Near the spring there is a reminder of the ancient legend of Amfey and Arituz.
It, of course, loses to the Artemis fountain in Archimedes square.
Bypassing the source, we find ourselves on the isthmus separating the source from the sea. From it you can see the castle of Maniace (Castello Maniace).
According to legend, this place is associated with Archimedes. During the Second Punic War, Archimedes led the defense of Syracuse. Somewhere in the area of the castle of Maniace, Archimedes’ hiberbolic mirrors were installed, with the help of which the Greeks set fire to Roman ships.
But Archimedes used more than mirrors to defend the city. For defense, long-range catapults and “iron paws” were used to overturn enemy ships.
Thanks to the scientist, the city was impregnable. And if not for the betrayal, the enemies would not have been able to take the city.
Having burst into Syracuse, the Romans perpetrated a massacre. Legends say that the great Archimedes died in this massacre.
I must say that the death of Archimedes is a very controversial issue. There are at least three unconfirmed versions of his death.
According to one of them, Archimedes was drawing something in the sand when the Romans burst into Syracuse. One of the soldiers stepped on the scientist’s drawing and he, in an attempt to protect his drawing, fell under the blow of the sword.
According to another version, Archimedes was stabbed to death when he refused to go to an appointment with Marcellus. According to the third version, after the fall of Syracuse, Archimedes went to Marcellus, carrying models of his inventions in his hands. The Roman soldiers took these models for treasures, and in the desire to take possession of them, they killed the scientist.
What to say about these versions, if it is not known for certain whether Archimedes was killed by the Romans in 212 BC. e., as we used to think …
The story of the death of Archimedes, his house and grave disappeared in the millennia.
And we, passing along the isthmus separating the Arethusa spring from the sea, descend to the embankment.
And from it we get into an unusual square
Walking ficuses grow here. How these inhabitants of South America got here is not known.Perhaps the Spaniards brought them here.
We stop for a while in the shade of overseas plants.
After a short break, we continue along the promenade along the embankment
Our tour is coming to an end. The heat did its job. We are moving very slowly, and there is time to talk about Archimedes …
I express my surprise, remembering the versions of the death of the scientist. I do not even manage to understand how a person who led the defense of his native city could die, drawing something on the sand next to his house. I do not understand how the head of the defense could carry the models of his inventions to the enemy. And it’s very strange how it could have happened that the 75-year-old scientist could not be twisted by a muscular Roman warrior and brought to Macella …
Discussing Archimedes, it turned out that his life, his works and his death are not so unambiguous as it is commonly believed. What is actually known about him?
Archimedes was born in 287 BC. NS. His father was the court astronomer Phidias. The father decided to give his son a good education. At first he taught him himself, and then sent him to Alexandria. At that time, the library of Alexandria contained the collected works of not only Greek, but also Egyptian scholars.
Studying here, Archimedes had access to everything that was associated with the knowledge accumulated by that time. As the legends say, the library had both public and private funds.
How many years Archimedes spent in Alexandria is unknown, but after returning to his hometown, he took an honorary post at the court of Hieron II – the ruler of Syracuse.
Some researchers are inclined to think that Archimedes did not study in Alexandria at all, but was looking for treatises on interesting but forgotten inventions.
This version is supported by the fact that Archimedes, having returned to Syracuse, unlike other ancient Greek scientists, did not create his own school and did not have students.
These researchers consider Archimedes to be a mechanic, engineer and natural scientist. In their opinion, his merit lies in the fact that having taken out invaluable knowledge from Egypt, he empirically tested how mechanisms that have not been embodied work.
Whether these researchers are right, we are unlikely to know. One thing remains certain, in one way or another Archimedes made an invaluable contribution to the development of science …
So, while talking about Archimedes, we made a circle and went to the port, where we left our car.
Finishing the trek through Ortigia, more than anything else, I wanted to do three things: hide in the shade, relax and have a coffee.
Realizing our desires and saying goodbye to us, the guide advised us to a very good restaurant.
And finally, we are sitting in the cool, enjoying relaxation and wonderful Italian coffee. Our determination to continue our acquaintance with Syracuse begins to quietly melt, and soon we clearly realize that our strength will only be enough to reach Avola and spend the rest of the day in the vicinity of our hotel …
After a while, I really regret that I did not see a lot of interesting places for me in Syracuse …
I didn’t go down to the catacombs of San Giovanni, didn’t wander around the castle of Maniache and didn’t see the most ancient Jewish mikveh …
I would like to return to Syracuse.Wander here in the evening twilight and maybe find more places associated with Archimedes and solve his riddles …

90,000 Caserta Royal Palace and Park – UNESCO Monuments – Where To Go
Caserta Royal Palace and its park, two magnificent gems, were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997.
The residence was created in the eighteenth century by Luigi Vanvitelli, commissioned by Charles III of the Bourbon dynasty, and represents a triumph of the Italian Baroque and one of the most important works of the remarkable Neapolitan architect.Guests are mesmerized by the beauty of the interiors and the majesty of the external appearance.
Its monumental facades, worked out to the smallest detail, hide four vast courtyards, and a picturesque park stretches in front of the palace, which currently attracts thousands of tourists.
The luxurious palace was the ideal and original combination of two other royal residences: the Palace of Versailles of the French Kings and the Escorial of Madrid, the residence of the kings of Spain. The Royal Palace of Caserta is a huge monumental ensemble occupying an area of 45.000 square meters, and its five floors rise to a height of 36 meters. The main facade is cut through by 143 windows, and inside there are 1200 rooms and 34 staircases. The building is made of bricks and the two lower floors are faced with travertine slabs. The central part of the building is crowned with a dome.
Inside you will be amazed by the continuous series of stucco molding, carving, frescoes, sculptures, inlaid floors. Famous Hall of Astrea (Sala di Astrea), Hall of Mars (Sala di Marte) and Throne Room (Sala del Trono). It is the largest part of the royal apartments and was intended to receive important guests.
The greatest impression is, perhaps, left by the main vestibule, connected to the main staircase, and also by the chapel.
The staircase is a sophisticated masterpiece of Baroque art, connecting the lower and upper vestibules, from where the passage to the royal apartments opens. The Palatine Chapel (Cappella Palatina), every detail of which Vanvitelli has thought out, certainly most clearly shows a clear connection with the Versailles model.
The court theater is also magnificent, a wonderful example of theatrical architecture of the eighteenth century: the auditorium is located in a horseshoe, a special impression is created by the solemn rhythm of the columns of a giant order, between which there are boxes.
However, there are other rooms of exceptional beauty here.
The Art Gallery (Pinacoteca) is a suite of rooms containing numerous paintings: still lifes, battle scenes and portraits of members of the Bourbon family.
In the Old Apartment (appartamento vecchio), there is an old nativity scene of the Bourbons, who were very fond of this Christmas decoration, which laid the foundation for the famous Neapolitan tradition of introducing complex multi-figured compositions on Christmas.
The Palatine Library (biblioteca palatina) adjoins the apartment of the queen, who was a sophisticated and highly educated lady, the room is tastefully decorated with reliefs and frescoes, one of which is made according to the drawing of Vanvitelli himself and reproduces the signs of the zodiac and constellations.
No less impressive are the halls dedicated to the four seasons.
The majesty and beauty of the palace is not inferior to the park with fountains and cascades.
The park is a typical example of an Italian garden with extensive lawns and curly flower beds, but the main place is occupied by water activities. Ponds, fountains and cascades, decorated with large sculptures, stretch along the central axis. The whole ensemble, culminating in the Grande Cascata, makes an amazing impression. The park extends to the top of the hill in front of the palace, where the English park begins, where paths wind through exotic plants.
An English landscape park that avoids symmetrical layout was created at the behest of Mary Caroline of Austria, and many native and exotic plants were planted here, including several magnificent Lebanese cedars.
Along with the Royal Palace and the park, UNESCO has included in the World Heritage List the Aqueduct (Acquedotto), designed by the same architect Luigi Vanvitelli, and the nearby ensemble of the village of San Leucio.
Rest and tours to the island of Sicily Italy, hotels, selection of a tour from the tour operator Balkan
GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean basin with a total area of 25,426 sq. km. Three capes gave the island the shape of a triangle, for which the ancient Greeks called Sicily Trinacria. Its shores are washed by three seas: in the north – the Tyrrhenian, in the east – the Ionian, in the west and south – the Mediterranean. The island is separated from the mainland of Italy, the Apennine Peninsula by the Strait of Messina (width at its narrowest point is 3 km).
Sicily includes 3 archipelagos: the Aeolian (Lepar) Islands – in the north, the Aegadian – in the west and the Pelagic Islands – in the south.
The island of Sicily is of volcanic origin, the landscape is mountainous, consisting of an extension of the Calabrian Apennines mountain range. In the eastern part rises the highest volcano in Europe – Etna with a height of 3340 m. There are many rivers on the island (Alcantara, Simeto, Platani, Belice, etc.), but not a single navigable one, because. in the summer they almost all dry out. There are also numerous nature reserves and parks on the island; magnificent forests in the mountains of Nebrodi and Fikutsa.
POLITICAL SYSTEM
Since 1946, the island of Sicily has the status of an autonomous region of Italy with administrative division into 9 provinces: Palermo, Trapani, Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Messina, Catania, Enna, Ragusa, Syracuse. The regional parliament is located in the capital of the island, Palermo. The Autonomous Region has been granted the right to issue laws in some areas related to the island’s economy (health, tourism, ecology). But all local bills are approved by the Italian State Legislation Committee.
RELIGION
Sicilians, like the overwhelming majority of Italians, are Catholics (about 95%).
POPULATION
More than 5 million people live on the island of Sicily. The bulk of the population is made up of Italians. There are also Arabs (natives of Tunisia), Greeks, French, Maltese.
LANGUAGE
Sicilians speak Italian, but in everyday life they often use the Sicilian dialect, which is hardly understood by foreigners who speak Italian. There are people who speak only the Sicilian dialect, but nevertheless understand Italian perfectly. In large cities, hotels and tourist centers, one can communicate in English, French and German. In provincial hotels, shops, etc., the language of communication is primarily Italian. However, the Sicilians are distinguished by their hospitality and friendly indulgence towards tourists, so if you get lost or need any information, locals are usually always ready to help, using heavily sign language.
CLIMATE AND WEATHER
The flora of Sicily is one of the richest in the Mediterranean. In the spring, the entire island turns into a huge multi-colored bouquet. A riot of colors and scents dizzy, and it becomes clear how the ancient Greeks, heading across the sea to Sicily, smelled oranges and lemons in bloom when the island was not yet visible on the horizon …
But only in the middle of May, when oleanders bloom, the water in the sea warms up to 17-18 degrees. There are years when it is already possible to swim in May or the first half of June, but the Sicilians themselves usually begin to “taste” the sea in the second half of June or in July, and before that time they just go to the beach to sunbathe. Although many tourists open the swimming season in early June. But, slowly warming up, the sea cools down just as slowly, keeping warm until November, and sometimes until December, offering bathers 20 degrees and even higher. The water temperature in July-August is 22-24 ° C (although the water temperature depends not only on the air temperature, but also on the beach, sandy beaches usually warm up faster and stronger).
The climate in Sicily is subtropical Mediterranean, rather mild. Summers are humid and hot, in July-August temperatures can reach 40-45 ° C, but on the coast the heat is more easily tolerated than in the heart of the island, thanks to the sea breeze. But in any case, for people who do not tolerate the heat, visiting the island is not recommended during this period and even poses a danger. The humid heat is periodically replaced by a sirocco-dry wind from the African desert, which sometimes blows for several days in a row at temperatures of 40 degrees and above.
Winter is short and warm, with an average temperature of 13 ° C, although it is windy and rainy. Usually the cold is humid, i.e. it always feels like the air is colder than it really is. The season for rest is May-October.
On average, the island has over 2500 hours of sunshine per year.

90,000 Superyacht pool. Oceanco shipyard experience – Motor Boat & Yachting Russia
It is believed that it is the presence of a full-fledged pool that draws the line between genuine superyachts and their “smaller brothers”, which, due to their small size, have to be content with a Jacuzzi.
Archimedes’ law – the basic postulate of shipbuilding – says: a buoyant force acts on a body immersed in water … However, everyone knows that the body in water is also affected by its energy, healing properties.Since ancient times, people have arranged artificial pools for bathing procedures and even sports. Over time, the pools “went out” to the sea: it is known for certain that at the time of Hieron of Syracuse (II century BC) there was a three-masted ship – a giant with a displacement of about 4200 tons with a pool on board, and a little later the Roman emperor Caligula rested on his floating villa with a pool on Lake Nemi. In modern history, the first ship’s pool was installed at the beginning of the 20th century. on the deck of the 223-meter British cruise ship Adriatic .
Today, a swimming pool on the deck of a pleasure yacht is a common thing, and although there are still many crystal clear bays and bays on the planet, the pools give a special pleasure from the coolness of fresh water among the salty sea. Equipped with waterfalls, floating bars, wave and current generators, glass bottom and infinity pool, they become an indispensable element for relaxation on board.
The pools of modern superyachts vary in shape, design, finishes, location … About what is important to consider in their design and how amazing the result can be, together with the engineers of the Lateral Design Bureau, we describe the example of Oceanco superyachts.
ALFA NERO
82 m / 2007 / Pioneer
This yacht was the first to use the infinity pool concept. Previously, pools were usually located on the upper decks, and the new Oceanco solution, implemented in cooperation with Nuvolari & Lenard, allows you to feel the closeness of the sea even on board such a large motor yacht. The laconic deck design with free-standing sun loungers and the convenient location of the bar enhance the spaciousness of this seating area.Wide steps lead to an extensive multi-level stern swim platform. The pool bottom rises at the push of a button, and then the deck turns into a helipad or becomes a party space.
SUNRAYS
85.5 m / 2010 / Live variety
This is the ideal yacht for those who love water and fun in equal measure. There are four swimming options on board: three hot tubs on the upper decks and a large pool / hot tub aft of the main deck.Temptingly located next to the bathing platform and outdoor seating area on the main deck, this pool draws in guests day and night. It has variable depth and has a semicircular seating area – a pleasant place to sip a cocktail and admire the seascape.
NIRVANA
88.5 m / 2012 / Swiss knife
In this multifunctional pool, you can not only cool off on a summer day in between sunbathing. With a length of 7.5 m (!), It will help to restore crawl swimming skills, for which you just need to activate a powerful counterflow system. And when the sun tilts to the horizon and you are looking for some fun, the pool’s height-adjustable floor will rise and turn into a concert stage. In addition, it has a ton of other useful features, just like the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife.

The sunbathing areas around the pool are raised above the rest of the deck to provide spectacular ocean views from three sides. The range of water pleasures on board is diversified by the jacuzzi on the owner’s private deck and on the sundeck.
KAOS
110 m / 2017 / For design connoisseurs
Luxurious onboard pool in keeping with the general style. It is so large that you might think you are in the rooftop pool of a famous Singapore hotel. It occupies the lion’s share of the main deck aft; the sides are lined with gorgeous sofas and a built-in aquarium that serves as an additional source of coolness. The Kaos was the largest superyacht built in the Netherlands at the time of its commissioning (then called the Jubilee ), and with such a colossal pool, it is proof that “bigger” is really “better”.
How to determine the optimal pool location for a particular vessel?
Pool water that can affect the stability of the boat and its position, in particular trim, is an important weight bearing item. The free surface of a pool filled with water has an additional effect on stability, especially when the yacht is moving. Another important factor is the location of the pool: the higher it is, the lower the stability shoulder.Choosing the right place for it allows you to minimize possible problems.
It is logical to locate the pool relatively low, on the main deck or even in the “beach club” closer to the center of magnitude (geometric center of the submerged volume) to minimize mass moment of inertia and limit water splash. Nevertheless, designers often place small pools in the superstructure, which is accompanied by certain difficulties.
Is it possible to prevent resonance and splashing water from the pool for safety and comfort?
The main trick is to minimize the movement of the water mass in the pool during the movement of the yacht under certain sea conditions due to the rational operation of the engines, and at the design stage – the favorable location of the pool. The natural vibration frequency of the water in the pool can be “tuned” to some extent by changing its geometry in order to avoid coincidence with the natural vibration frequencies of a moving vessel. It is also sometimes useful to limit the width of the pool.
The natural frequency can be calculated or, for more complex geometries, determined experimentally. Then it is compared with the expected frequencies of the ship in all degrees of freedom and design solutions are proposed. Factors such as the presence of benches and armrests, changes in height and depth, geometry and dimensions of safety troughs can be intelligently used to reduce negative effects, absorb waves and minimize overflow, making the pool suitable for use in a wide range of conditions.
Are scale models of pools practiced under “real-world” conditions?
Yes, this is done in some complex cases for specific scenarios. A relatively large-scale model can be tested on a special bench that is capable of simulating the predicted characteristics of vessel movement. It allows you to check the splash of water from the pool and, for example, to evaluate the splash of water in the ebb troughs.
What are the depth, length and width limitations of the pool in relation to the size of the boat?
There are no clear criteria for the size of a basin, although a larger basin can be expected to have a greater impact on the vessel as a whole. It is important to incorporate the pool into the structure early in the design to assess its impact on the fit and stability of the yacht. Lateral pools are generally avoided as they are more sensitive to yacht roll and free surface will have a greater impact on stability.
Is a pumping damper required to operate the pool?
No, but a boat with good propulsion characteristics and a roll stabilization system will certainly add to the pool experience and overall comfort on the yacht. It is worth remembering that there are always a number of conditions for the safe operation of pools on board.
What modern technologies for air conditioning, heating, storage and pumping of water exist?
On large yachts, pools usually have water storage tanks and pumps that can quickly fill a bowl with pre-conditioned and purified water. Thanks to this, passengers do not have to wait long: the pool is ready for use almost immediately. The choice of technologies and systems is wide, but there will be fine filters and odor control devices everywhere.Water can be heated using electricity, or heat from the operating main systems of the vessel can be used. In special cases, separate diesel boilers are used. There are circumstances when, on the contrary, water needs to be cooled.
How is pool safety usually monitored?
Each vessel has its own rules for the use of pools, the observance of which is controlled by the captain. The temperature and quality of the water is constantly monitored by electronics. In case of deviations from the norm, it will give an alarm. If necessary, a video surveillance system provides remote monitoring of the pool.
Are there any extraordinary requests for swimming pools?
In addition to waterfalls, aquariums and glass sides, sometimes customers want to equip the pool with, for example, built-in TVs showing sharks!

“Cavagrande del Cassibile”, low price for a vacation in Italy in June
The Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve is an area of interest to explore in many ways. It is interesting for geographers, anthropologists, archaeologists, hydrologists and even speleologists. Its area is approximately 2700 hectares and covers three Sicilian provinces – Avola, Syracuse and Noto. The Kassibile River flows through the entire reserve. For many thousands of years, it has formed here many deep canyons with a length of 10 km.
The first inhabitants of the reserve
The very first inhabitants of these places were Siculs. The area is protected by sheer cliffs, but there is access to water. And in the 11-10th centuries BC. the Siculs established small settlements here. The ruins of the northern settlement can be viewed from the observation deck and today, such a vacation in Italy will be interesting.Hundreds of graves have survived to this day, carved into the rocks in parallel on six levels, and excursion tours in Italy will definitely be interesting.
Holidays in Italy will give an opportunity to see ancient rivers
At the end of the valley, the Kassibile River over hundreds of years has created a systemic complex of small cascades with crystal-clear water. The most beautiful of the cascades is best accessed from Avola Antica. The whole journey will take about 30 minutes. If you go further than the location of the cascades, you can get to the settlement of Diei. And in order to fully enjoy the beauty of these places, it is fashionable to go a few kilometers further, to the source of the river, to the town of Priza. There is a lake in it, the water of which is used by the local hydroelectric power station. Book your flights online and be sure to visit here.
You will see a variety of plants that exude a wonderful aroma. These are herbs sage, mint, savory, oregano. And the many bushes of blackberries, ivy and thickets of oak can even create peculiar difficulties for inexperienced travelers.
Spreading trees are comfortably located along the coast – Mediterranean willows, poplars, white and black, wonderful oriental plane trees, sometimes 1.5 meters in diameter.
It is fashionable to attribute the whitethroat to the typical inhabitants of the reserve itself; it lives in the undergrowth. In the sky you can see peregrine falcons, kestrels, sometimes there are even falcons soaring high in the sky.
