What are the essential pieces of equipment for street hockey. How do you choose the right inline skates for your skill level. Which protective gear is crucial for safe play. Discover everything you need to know about street hockey equipment in this comprehensive guide.
The Essentials of Street Hockey Equipment
Street hockey, a popular variant of ice hockey played on dry land, requires specific equipment to ensure safety, comfort, and optimal performance. Understanding the key components of street hockey gear is crucial for players of all levels. Let’s dive into the essential equipment you’ll need to get started or upgrade your current setup.
Inline Skates: The Foundation of Street Hockey
Inline skates are the cornerstone of street hockey equipment. These specialized skates feature a single line of wheels, typically ranging from 3 to 5, which allow for smooth gliding on various surfaces. When choosing inline skates for street hockey, consider factors such as boot construction, wheel size, and bearing quality.
- Boot construction: Look for a sturdy yet comfortable boot that provides ankle support
- Wheel size: Larger wheels offer more speed, while smaller wheels provide better maneuverability
- Bearing quality: Higher-grade bearings result in smoother, faster skating
Are inline skates different from roller blades? While the terms are often used interchangeably, inline skates specifically refer to skates with wheels in a single line, whereas roller blades can encompass both inline and quad skate designs.
Protective Gear: Ensuring Safety on the Streets
Safety should always be a top priority in street hockey. The right protective gear can prevent injuries and boost confidence during play. Essential protective equipment includes:
- Helmet: Protects the head from impacts and falls
- Elbow pads: Cushion the elbows during falls or collisions
- Knee pads: Protect the knees from scrapes and impacts
- Wrist guards: Prevent wrist injuries during falls
- Gloves: Offer protection and improve grip on the stick
Should you wear a full face mask for street hockey? While not always mandatory, a full face mask or cage can provide additional protection against high sticks and errant shots, especially for beginners or in more competitive play.
Choosing the Right Hockey Stick for Street Play
Selecting the appropriate hockey stick is crucial for optimal performance in street hockey. Unlike ice hockey sticks, street hockey sticks are designed to withstand the abrasive nature of asphalt and concrete surfaces.
Key Factors in Selecting a Street Hockey Stick
- Material: Composite or wood, with composite offering durability and performance
- Flex: Choose based on your height, weight, and playing style
- Blade curve: Affects puck control and shot trajectory
- Length: Should reach between your chin and nose when standing on skates
Does the type of surface affect stick choice? Indeed, rougher surfaces may require more durable stick materials or specialized blades to withstand wear and tear.
The Importance of Proper Clothing for Street Hockey
While not equipment per se, appropriate clothing plays a significant role in comfort and performance during street hockey. Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking materials that allow for a full range of motion.
Recommended Clothing Items for Street Hockey
- Lightweight, breathable shirts
- Athletic shorts or pants
- Moisture-wicking socks
- Sweatbands or headbands to manage perspiration
Is there specific street hockey apparel available? Some brands offer specialized street hockey clothing with added durability and protective features, but standard athletic wear is often sufficient for casual play.
Goalie Equipment: Specialized Gear for Net Minders
Goalies in street hockey require a unique set of equipment to protect themselves and effectively guard the net. The following items are essential for street hockey goalkeepers:
- Goalie mask or helmet with face protection
- Chest protector
- Goalie-specific gloves (blocker and catcher)
- Leg pads
- Goalie stick
How does street hockey goalie equipment differ from ice hockey? Street hockey goalie gear is often lighter and more flexible to accommodate the different playing surface and increased mobility requirements.
Maintenance and Care of Street Hockey Equipment
Proper maintenance of your street hockey equipment not only extends its lifespan but also ensures optimal performance and safety. Regular care routines should include:
- Cleaning and drying gear after each use
- Inspecting equipment for wear and damage
- Lubricating skate bearings
- Replacing worn-out components
- Storing equipment in a cool, dry place
How often should you replace your street hockey equipment? While it varies based on usage and care, most protective gear should be replaced every 1-2 years, or sooner if signs of significant wear are present.
Innovative Technologies in Street Hockey Equipment
The world of street hockey equipment is constantly evolving, with new technologies emerging to enhance player performance and safety. Some recent innovations include:
Advanced Materials in Stick Construction
Modern street hockey sticks often incorporate advanced composite materials, such as carbon fiber and kevlar, to provide improved durability, flex, and feel. These materials allow for lighter sticks without sacrificing strength or performance.
Smart Sensors for Performance Tracking
Some manufacturers are integrating smart sensors into street hockey equipment, allowing players to track metrics such as shot speed, stick handling precision, and overall performance. This data can be invaluable for training and improvement.
Enhanced Protective Gear Technologies
New protective gear designs incorporate advanced impact-absorbing materials and ergonomic shapes to provide better protection while maintaining flexibility and comfort. Some examples include D3O foam and multi-layered padding systems.
Are these technological advancements necessary for casual players? While not essential, these innovations can enhance the playing experience and potentially improve performance for players at all levels.
Choosing Equipment for Different Skill Levels
The right equipment can vary significantly based on a player’s skill level and experience. Here’s a general guide for selecting gear based on your proficiency:
Beginner Level
- Focus on protective gear and comfort
- Choose mid-range inline skates with good ankle support
- Opt for a versatile, all-purpose stick
Intermediate Level
- Invest in higher-quality skates with better performance features
- Consider specialized sticks based on playing style
- Upgrade protective gear for improved comfort and protection
Advanced Level
- Choose top-tier skates with customizable features
- Invest in high-performance sticks tailored to specific positions or playing styles
- Opt for professional-grade protective equipment
How do you determine your skill level in street hockey? Consider factors such as years of experience, frequency of play, and your ability to execute advanced techniques and strategies.
Budget Considerations for Street Hockey Equipment
Street hockey equipment can vary widely in price, and it’s important to balance quality with budget constraints. Here are some tips for managing your equipment expenses:
- Prioritize essential protective gear
- Invest in quality skates and sticks, as these significantly impact performance
- Look for package deals or starter sets for beginners
- Consider purchasing used equipment, especially for growing children
- Take advantage of off-season sales and discounts
Is expensive equipment always better for street hockey? While higher-priced gear often offers advanced features and durability, mid-range equipment can be suitable for most recreational players. The key is finding the right balance between quality and affordability.
Street Hockey Equipment for Children and Youth Players
Introducing children and young players to street hockey requires careful consideration of equipment choices. Safety, comfort, and adaptability are key factors when selecting gear for younger players.
Key Considerations for Youth Street Hockey Equipment
- Adjustable skates to accommodate growth
- Lightweight protective gear that doesn’t restrict movement
- Sticks sized appropriately for the child’s height
- Helmets with full face protection
How often should you replace equipment for growing children? It’s important to regularly check the fit of all equipment, especially skates and protective gear. Typically, you may need to replace or adjust gear every 6-12 months during growth spurts.
Comparing Street Hockey and Ice Hockey Equipment
While street hockey and ice hockey share many similarities, their equipment requirements differ in several key areas. Understanding these differences can help players transitioning between the two sports or those looking to try both.
Key Differences in Equipment
- Skates: Inline skates for street hockey vs. ice skates for ice hockey
- Sticks: Street hockey sticks are often more durable to withstand rough surfaces
- Protective gear: Street hockey may require additional padding for falls on hard surfaces
- Pucks/balls: Street hockey often uses a ball instead of a puck
Can ice hockey equipment be used for street hockey? While some protective gear can be used interchangeably, it’s important to use sport-specific skates and sticks for optimal performance and safety.
The Role of Accessories in Enhancing Street Hockey Play
Beyond the essential equipment, various accessories can enhance your street hockey experience and improve your game. Consider the following accessories to complement your core gear:
- Stick tape for improved puck control
- Specialized insoles for skates to enhance comfort and performance
- Equipment bags for easy transport and storage
- Portable goals for practice or impromptu games
- Training aids such as stickhandling balls or off-ice shooting pads
Are accessories necessary for casual street hockey players? While not essential, accessories can enhance enjoyment and potentially improve skills. Prioritize based on your specific needs and goals in the sport.
Environmental Considerations in Street Hockey Equipment
As environmental awareness grows, many players and manufacturers are focusing on sustainable and eco-friendly options for street hockey equipment. Consider these aspects when making equipment choices:
Eco-Friendly Equipment Options
- Sticks made from sustainable or recycled materials
- Protective gear utilizing biodegradable or recyclable components
- Equipment from brands with strong environmental policies
- Second-hand or refurbished equipment to reduce waste
How can players reduce their environmental impact through equipment choices? Opt for durable, long-lasting gear to minimize replacements, choose products with minimal packaging, and properly recycle or donate old equipment when it’s time for an upgrade.
The Future of Street Hockey Equipment
As technology and materials science continue to advance, the future of street hockey equipment looks promising. Anticipated developments include:
- Smart equipment with integrated performance tracking
- More sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing processes
- Advanced protective materials for enhanced safety
- Customizable equipment through 3D printing technology
- Improved ventilation and cooling systems in protective gear
How will these advancements impact the accessibility of street hockey? While cutting-edge technology may initially increase costs, it’s likely that innovations will eventually trickle down to more affordable equipment, making the sport more accessible and enjoyable for players at all levels.
In conclusion, selecting the right street hockey equipment is crucial for safety, performance, and enjoyment of the sport. By understanding the key components, considering your skill level and budget, and staying informed about new technologies and trends, you can make informed decisions about your gear. Whether you’re a beginner just starting out or an experienced player looking to upgrade, the right equipment can significantly enhance your street hockey experience.

Real people play hockey… Kozlovsky and the monkey
December 1, 2021 / Aleksey Litovchenko
And also Seann William Scott, Vyacheslav Shalevich and Keanu Reeves on the net.
The most popular winter sport in Rus’ is celebrated on the first day of winter, which is logical. Although December 22 is considered the birthday of domestic hockey. One way or another, today we have selected for you several different pictures dedicated to battles on ice with sticks. And each of them is good in its own way.
“Miracle” (2004)
Kurt Russell plays the coach of Herba Brooks, who, stressfully chewing (for a resemblance to George Yartsevo), leads the US national team to win the USSR and gold medal of the Zimny Olympiad 1980. This victory was immediately dubbed the “Miracle on Ice” – it became so unexpected for everyone. And the film, accordingly, is not weakly charged with American patriotic pathos. But at the same time, the story itself is instructive, and the degree of upliftment is impressively strong, and the motivational effect is powerful.
The Hockey Players (1965)
A cinema characteristic of the 1960s that compares two radically different approaches of coaching: discipline and performance indicators. In addition, special attention is paid to the problem of ageism in Soviet sports. In short, from all sides a curious thing. With the wonderful song “Blue Ice” performed by Oleg Anofriev. In other roles – Vyacheslav Shalevich, Georgy Zhzhenov, Lev Durov and even Kir Bulychev (the same one).
“Puck, puck!” (2000)
An incredibly smart monkey escapes from a research institute and ends up in a small Canadian town. Where he finds a common language (gestures) with a dumb girl whose brother is driving for the local team of losers. The primate turns out to be an unusually gifted hockey player and leads them to the championship.
Created this charming rubbish – quite, however, quite typical for the family cinema of the 1990s – Robert Vince, who gave us the “King of the Air” (he was listed as a producer there) and a number of children’s films, which were released mainly immediately on video, about touching animals. Among them is a trilogy about the chimpanzee Jack, who alternately masters hockey, skateboarding and snowboarding. And the most successful, of course, is the first part. Because a chimpanzee on skates with a stick is really damn funny. A snowboard, a skateboard – well, think about it.
“Bouncer” (2011)
A simple guy who works as a bouncer in a bar and is a hockey fan, suddenly gets a chance to fulfill his dream and become a full-fledged player of a real team. Where he is credited for the ability to famously wave his fists. And he, of course, will succeed, rally the team and win the heart of the girl. It sounds like an ordinary set of stamps, but in general it is an extremely sincere and funny comedy. In addition, Seann William Scott is here in almost his only big and prominent role since American Pie.
“Legend No. 17” (2012)
A sensational biopic about Valery Kharlamov. Our legendary hockey player climbs a cable stretched for some reason between the cooling towers (Nikolai Lebedev loves tricks with cables, what can you do), tempers his character thanks to unconventional methods of coach Tarasov, arranges his personal life and smashes Canadians. No matter how the film was scolded for an alternative interpretation of the facts and copying the aforementioned “Miracle” by Gavin O’Connor, he won popular love, launched the career of Danila Kozlovsky into space and introduced the fashion for big-budget patriotic blockbusters. Objectively, a milestone for Russian cinema.
Youngblood (1986)
A young talent breaks into the junior team with an eye to further promotion to the NHL level. The difficulty lies in the fact that the team is not so hot. Moreover, the daughter of a strict mentor is painfully cute. Up to a heap rivals gesticulate, and the judges all as one forgot points at home. And one especially ferocious brute put his best friend on the ice with his head – so much so that a metal patch had to be inserted into the skull.
Exemplary cinema 1980s (synth-pop, wildness, practice montage included) with the main star of the time Rob Lowe and Patrick Swayze – the other main star of the time. At the gate is an unknown Keanu Reeves. Also noteworthy is the soundtrack, which was written by William Orbit, a significant figure in the world of music: he worked with Madonna, Britney Spears, Ricky Martin, Robbie Williams, Queen, U2, Blur, Kraftwerk and many other outstanding people.
Sudden Death (1995)
Strictly speaking, this is not really a hockey movie. A thriller with Jean-Claude Van Damme. But about hockey. The terrorists want to blow up the stadium right during the decisive match for the Stanley Cup. Van Damme, of course, must prevent them. Beating, among other things, a bandit in a penguin costume.
An imitation of “Die Hard” is evident, and yet a kind of classic. Filmed by Peter Hyams, a prominent figure of those years, a competent specialist (“Time Patrol” with the same Van Damme, “End of the World” with Schwarzenegger). Three years ago, even a remake took place, but not about hockey, but about football. Dave Bautista there on a motorcycle cut through the spaces under the stands and confronted the villain Pierce Brosnan.

“You will see a monkey in the mirror.” I watched a new talk show “Match TV”, which makes everyone uncomfortable – Five Corners – Blogs
Vadim Korablev’s surprise.
Match TV turned its sixth birthday into a launching point for several projects. It will be overkill to write that the channel has started a new life, but it has definitely rebuilt and is trying new things.
The idea loomed back in August, when Oleg Polunin, former producer of Olga Skabeeva and Yevgeny Popov’s political talk show 60 Minutes, joined Match TV, and from November 1 we see the results: American football in underwear, Games of the Titans ” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the analytical program “Loud” with Dmitry Guberniev and the talk show “There is a theme!”.
“There is a topic!” is the flagship product of the new Match. The talk show airs five days a week (net running time is just over 40 minutes), and the channel’s strategists advertised it in all interviews. Marketing Director of the “Match” Dmitry Limar described the novelty as follows, communicating with Sport 24:
– We will discuss the main and most resonant topics in the world of big sport. We have been preparing for this premiere for a long time and we hope that the talk show will significantly expand the presence of sports stars on our air who will discuss sensitive topics.
– Is it about live screams in the style of other federal channels?
– Of course, senseless screams are not needed. And this is by no means a parody of anyone. We hope that within the framework of this new format we will be able to expand the range of topics related to sports, which are not discussed in detail on the Match air. We want to give a platform to people who are connected with this or that hot topic.
We hope that the audience will be interested in the opinions of famous people, participants in newsbreaks, and their disputes. This has never happened before in the world of sports TV. It will be hot, but we hope that there will be no fights.
I watched “There is a theme!” and I want to discuss the show based on a couple of Limar’s key points.
“Senseless screams, of course, are not needed”: this is not so, the show is built on swearing, and sometimes it looks too artificial
When in social networks “There is a topic!” compared with “60 minutes”, I thought that people were exaggerating, but there really are a lot of similarities. And the issue of “Vaccination and big sport: the Olympics are not for everyone?” in general, he could easily go out on the same “Russia 1”.
Pumping intro music, round studio, lava-like animation in the center. Host Maria Orzul ominously leads to the video: “How the covid vaccine became a lever of pressure in modern sports and a real bone of contention between Russia and the West.” The plot begins even more disturbingly: “War of vaccines is not declared, but already goes!”.
In the studio – Olympic skeleton medalist Yelena Nikitina, commentator Dmitry Fedorov, virologist Georgy Vikulov and people who were probably responsible for the former producer of 60 Minutes – Kommersant columnist Maxim Yusin and political scientist Mikhail Sinelnikov-Orishak. Yusin appears in many episodes of “Vremya Pokazhet” on “First” (this is where the presenter Artem Sheinin threatens American experts and flaunts that he killed people), and Sinelnikova-Orishak, who regularly performed in “60 Minutes” back in 2020, now quoted by Russia Today and Tsargrad.
While Yusin calmly answered questions, Sinelnikov-Orishak behaved strangely. He was angered by the thesis that if the IOC does not recognize Sputnik V, our athletes will have to be additionally vaccinated with a foreign vaccine. He is sure of two things: there is no need to go to the Olympics, and Sputnik V will become doping, like meldonium:
“There are no double standards. Since the time of ancient Rome, the one who is stronger has been trying to plant enemies, competitors on his standard. If you are so eager to play by someone else’s rules that someone else’s uncles would say “OK, sehr gut” to you, then why are you surprised? <...> You, despite the humiliation, want to crawl through there, even as a carcass, even as a stuffed animal. No sympathy for you! You will be humiliated! You will be humiliated!”
A little later, Sinelnikov-Orishak got into a fight with Dmitry Fedorov. Since it is very difficult to parse their lines, I suggest a small attraction: decipher 15 very noisy seconds in the video below (if the video does not immediately play from the right moment, rewind to 19:02).
Not only Fedorov suffered, Sinelnikov-Orishak quarreled with other experts as well. The dialogue below is an example of a respectful discussion:
Virologist: It’s just that we don’t have deaf-mutes here, in my opinion. We hear each other well, it is not necessary to shout like that.
Orzul: Well, the subject is acute. It is clear that the nerves are all handed over.
Virologist: The topic is acute, but…
Virologist: Actually, I am also here as a professional, responsible for the medical component.
Sinelnikov-Orishak: What [professional]? In viruses? In the Olympics? In sports?
Yusin: Don’t act like a monkey.
Sinelnikov-Orishak: You will see a monkey in the mirror.
Trying to calm down Sinelnikov-Orishak, Orzul asked: “So what to do? Do you want to see athletes from Russia at the Olympics?” The guest did not like the question: “I want to see Russian athletes in Russia. I want Russia not to obey someone else’s rules, but to establish its own.
If “Match” doesn’t need meaningless screams, why then invite people who don’t want to or simply don’t know how to hear others? But shouting and interrupting is not just an accident, but an important part of the show, which is deliberately and not very subtly heated up. For example, Maria Orzul was not satisfied with the substantive answers of the virologist: they relieved the situation, so the presenter repeated the same questions in different ways so that the studio would not calm down. In another issue – about the composition of the national team for Cyprus and Croatia – Orzul baffled Vladislav Radimov:
– Is there any order and class in our team, given the personnel losses?
– There is definitely order. It seems to me that the national team in the last matches …
– One order is not enough.
The reaction of Radimov, who tried to develop the idea, is invaluable (if the video does not immediately play from the right moment, rewind to 2:50).
However, in this issue everything went quite peacefully until Artem Dziuba was touched. The same Maxim Yusin (yes, he comes not only to near-political issues) closer to the final pissed off the enthusiastic Konstantin Genich:
Yusin: Let’s be honest about the diagnosis. This is an abnormal situation when two men cannot agree before the decisive matches of the national team.
Genich : Nonsense! Two normal people…
Yusin: Yes, it’s not normal. It’s just that you, communicating closely with the players, are used to their constant whims, and it infuriates us, fans from the side, a little.
Genich: Well, when a person has historically scored the most goals, can he be a little capricious?
Yusin: Can’t!
Genich: He has every right to do so! When the next [player] scores 145 – I don’t know what number Dziuba will stop at – he can be rude. What, Vlad [Radimov] was not capricious? German [El Classico] wasn’t acting up? Yes, all all athletes are capricious.
Yushin: Yes, but those who are not capricious become great.
Genich : The great Cristiano Ronaldo was not capricious, yes!
Orzul: Kostya! Kostya! Yes, you wait! Why are you screaming crazy here?
Genich: This is a talk show, I have every right to speak here.
“We hope the audience will be interested in the opinions of famous people, their disputes”: this is unlikely, because the questions and dialogues in the show are too primitive
But the main problem is “There is a topic!” not even in screams, but in the fact that the creators have not fully formulated why they include this show at all.
So far, it seems that ridiculous showdowns are the only thing that gives him identity, but Limar emphasized that the audience should be interested in the opinion of the guests. Only who can be interested in someone’s position in disputes of this quality? When in “There is a theme!” don’t try to interrupt, the show turns into a regular studio with a couple of experts in the chairs. But the same studios “There is a theme!” loses in the depth of the conversation – for people who constantly follow the agenda, the program will seem too banal . Moreover, there is a feeling that it seems banal to its participants as well.
Above, I mentioned Orzul’s question about the “order and class” of the national team – and it accurately illustrates the average level of transfer questions. Already in another issue about the squad for Cyprus and Croatia (yes, there were two of them), the presenter asked Alexander Mostovoy: “Well, Karpin says that with the Croats, as well as with Cyprus, the team is going to play open attacking football. Isn’t that too presumptuous?” Alexander prepared: “Of course, presumptuous. Because saying and doing are two different things. You can say whatever you want.”
Valery Nepomniachtchi was present in the same issue, and he obviously felt uncomfortable. When Orzul emotionally asked how Karpin was going to play against the high Croatian defense (the height of the players was indicated on the screen at that time), Nepomniachtchi was embarrassed: “So you can play not at the top, but at the bottom. In this case, Sergeev, and Tyukavin, and Smolov will be more needed than Zabolotny. A little later, Nepomniachtchi added: “I want us to separate Agalarov and Sergeev – these are two players of a different type. Sergeev interacts well with partners, he can go back, get [the ball] and continue [attacking]. Agalarov is a touch player.”
Realizing that no one needed this level of analytics, Nepomniachtchi was less likely to join the conversation. A few minutes later, another important question came from Orzul: “In Soviet times, coaches [of clubs] could call and force them to take a player for the sake of a result. Is this possible now?” This, of course, concerned Artem Dzyuba, although Orzul herself noticed that the forward in the studio is remembered too often (the first thing you think about at this moment: Dziuba for Match is like Ukraine for First and Russia). The non-call forward of Zenit was loudly discussed by Roman Naguchev and Dmitry Zanin, who, it seems, played more ardent experts than felt organic in this role. And when they realized that they were flirting, they smiled and joked (if the video does not immediately play from the right moment, rewind to 13:29).
Hardly with the help of “There is a topic!” the channel looks after a regular audience, rather it is a way to attract new viewers who rarely follow sports. It turns out a simple conversation on the most popular topics, where you can shout and quarrel.
But why did Match choose this path? Even after the departure of Nobel Arustamyan, Denis Kazansky and other stars, there are still enough talented people (and they come to the studio of the new show) who could make projects much more elegant.
There is nothing wrong with building a show on conflict, dreaming of high ratings (so far the most popular episode has collected 15 thousand views on YouTube, the unpopular – 5 thousand) – all media think about numbers and rejoice at records. But will the primitive analogue of the political show really attract people who are already tired of the aggressive agenda? Still, setting fire to and at the same time introducing a non-hardcore viewer to our sport can also be done in a stylish and new way – revisit Headbutt and Tour Cult.
In the meantime, “Match” only rams important topics (such as the likely purchase of “Spartak” by sheikhs, where competent explanations sounded in the release) into a noisy format and places its own employees in strange scenery: Maria Orzul asks too simple questions herself after them, he laughs, Genich swears with the “Time will tell” expert, Zanin and Naguchev, smiling, shout at each other because of Dzyuba.
