BBC – Science & Nature
2001. A clandestine meeting of leading Israeli archaeologists are shown a remarkable artefact. It’s a stone tablet, apparently from 1,000BC. The writing on its face describes repairs to the temple of King Solomon. It is the first archaeological evidence ever found of this legendary building.
The relic caused a sensation. But this was only just the start.
For authentification, the tablet was taken to the Geological Survey of Israel. Here, after a battery of tests, including radiocarbon dating, scientists officially pronounced the stone to be genuine. The tests even revealed microscopic particles of gold in the outer layer of stone. These were apparently the result of the tablet surviving the fire which, according to the bible, destroyed the temple when the Babylonians sacked Jerusalem in 586BC.
The stone tablet was offered for sale to the Israel Museum, home to many of Israel’s greatest treasures. Rumours suggested the asking price was as high as $10million.
Suspicions aroused
But the museum needed to know where the stone had come from. Even its owner was a mystery. To make matters more complex, the stone itself had disappeared again. The Israeli Antiquities Authority wanted answers. A nine month search for the mysterious stranger who had first appeared with the stone eventually led them to a private detective who had been hired by a well known antiquities collector, Oded Golan.
Golan insisted he too was just a front man for another collector. But the authorities were suspicious. He was known to be the owner of the James Ossuary, another extraordinary artefact which had appeared a couple of years earlier. This was a burial box with an inscription linking it to Jesus’ brother.
The authorities raided Golan’s apartment and recovered both the ossuary and the elusive stone. It was time to establish once and for all if both were genuine. So they set up a committee of linguists and scientists to examine them.
Looking at the stone, several linguists said ‘fake’. Some of the Hebrew, they claimed, was not ancient. Other experts claimed that so little is known of ancient Hebrew that it’s impossible to be sure.
The geological evidence
The committee turned to geology. Dr Yuval Goren, a geo-archaeologist and head of the Archaeological Institute at Tel-Aviv University, soon found evidence that a team of sophisticated forgers had led the earlier experts astray.
- The patina on the stone had in fact been manufactured artificially
- The charcoal particles which produced the convincing radiocarbon date had been added by hand
- The gold fragments hinting at an ancient fire were a clever final addition
The authorities presented their conclusions. They announced that the stone tablet, and the James Ossuary, were elaborate fakes.
But who was producing these fakes and how? Dr Goren decided to piece together how the stone tablet had been made. He tracked the origin of the stone itself – apparently a building block taken from a Crusader castle.
It was even possible to work out how the fake patina had been manufactured and the ingredients used. What was clear was the team of forgers included experts in a range of disciplines.
More fakes suspected
When the police took Oded Golan into custody and searched his apartment they discovered a workshop with a range of tools, materials, and half finished ‘antiquities’. This was evidence for an operation of a scale far greater than they had suspected.
Investigators have established that collectors around the world have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for artefacts that came through Oded Golan’s associates. Dozens of these items have now been examined by Dr Goren, and all have been revealed to be forgeries. Police now suspect that artefacts made by the same team of forgers have found their way into leading museums around the world.
Some archaeologists have now concluded that everything that came to market in the last 20 years without clear provenance should be considered a fake. Many of these objects, like the stone tablet which started the investigation, were cynically playing on the desire of many of the collectors to see the bible confirmed as history. For those in search of the temple of Solomon – their goal is as far away as ever.

23- Solomon’s Quarries |
The entrance to Solomon’s Quarries built by Suleiman in 1535 is under the north wall of the Old City, and sits on the rock escarpment of Mount Moriah. Solomon’s Quarries are also known as Zedekiah’s Cave or Zedekiah’s Grotto. The stones for Solomon’s temple may have been hewn and taken from this quarry around 970 BC (1 Kings 6:1):
It seems certain that King Herod returned here in 19 BC for some of the stone used to build his temple. Some of the stones in the Western Wall, for example, |
The quarry entrance is under the north wall of the Old City about 500 feet to the east of the Damascus Gate. It was concealed during the Ottoman Empire by Suleiman in 1540 for security reasons and was not rediscovered until 1854 when James Barclay found it and snuck in one night. Josephus mentions the “Royal Caverns” (War 5:147) in his discussion of the north wall and gate built by Herod Agrippa I in 41BC on the same location as today’s wall and Damascus Gate. This quarry became known as Zedekiah’s Cave because 2 Kings 25 and Jeremiah 52 tell how Zedekiah fled the city of Jerusalem in 586 even though the Babylonian army had encircled the city for 24 months and had even entered to city to pillage and burn. How did Zedekiah escape entrapment in the city of Jerusalem at that time? The Bible indicates that he and his troops used a gate at night, but legend and the system of caves under the city provide additional information. There is reported a tunnel from the royal palace of David that was connected to the cave system under the Temple Mount on Mount Moriah, which would have been connected to this quarry. In fact, many ancient accounts and even modern reports claim that this cave system extends all the way to Jericho 13 miles away. |

Gemstone Information – Azurite-Malachite Meaning and Properties
Azurite-malachite is a blend of two distinct and popular gems: the deep, almost lapis-like blues of azurite and the variegated green shades of banded malachite. The name azurite comes from lazhward, a Persian word for “blue,” while “malachite” originally comes from the Greek word molochitis, meaning “mallow plant. ” The stone name can sometimes be shortened to azurmalachite. It is commonly cut into cabochons or carved into small objets d’art. The oldest mine known is at Timna Valley in Israel, in operation for over 3,000 years. These two copper-based gemstones are frequently found in copper mines, or near mines of other copper-based gemstones such as turquoise and chrysocolla. (A blend of azurite, malachite, turquoise and chrysocolla, called “Eilat stone,” is named after the Middle Eastern city of Eilat, where it was once mined. Eilat stone, also known as King Solomon’s stone, is the national stone of Israel.)In ancient Egypt, Azurite–as a component of lapis lazuli–was used to create the protective blue eye of Horus. It was also ground for use as the pigment “mountain blue,” “Armenian stone” or “Azurro Della Magna.” Many medieval paintings of the Virgin Mary in a blue robe were long thought to be painted using lapis lazuli; chemical analysis has since indicated that azurite was used instead, from the well-known mines in France. Malachite was ground into eyeshadow powder (unfortunately toxic), and referred to their love goddess Hathor as “the lady of malachite.” They thought wearing malachite around their heads and arms protected them from epidemics. The synthesis of azurite and malachite produces a mineral which is said to exhibit the properties of each individual stone, plus some which come uniquely from their partnership.
Azurite–sometimes called a “stone of heaven”–is commonly believed to provide insight into all areas of life, promote intuition, stimulate creativity, dissolve impediments and soften cold intellectualism with love and compassion. Malachite, with its striking green bands of color, has been said to encourage action, enact change, heal heartache, enhance creativity, increase fertility and protect the spirit.
United as azurite-malachite, it is believed this mineral blends different traits together, freshens the user’s outlook on life, as well as dissolving egocentric characteristics; dispelling conceit, arrogance and vanity; calming anxiety and enhancing flexibility in motion and thought.
That is why jewelry makers love these stones both individually and together.
Azurite can appear in over 45 different forms. This stone changes in response to air, slowly turning into malachite over time. It is destroyed by heat, becoming a black copper oxide powder, and bubbles like a certain brand of cold tablet when exposed to hydrochloric acid! Malachite forms in a range of crystal shapes, including masses, tufts, rosettes, crusts and–occasionally–as stalagmites and stalactites. Some forms include a scattering of druzy crystals.Azurite-malachite (like its separate stones) is toxic in its raw state and care must be used when handling, grinding, cutting and polishing rough. Always wear a facemask when cutting gemstone materials, and do not inhale the dust. Do not immerse in water or lick the stone when using for crystal healing.Azurite-malachite has been found in Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America, China and the USA.

Azurite-malachite is a soft stone and its surface can be easily damaged. This copper carbonate combination is extremely sensitive to heat, as well as sun-bleaching. Always store in a dark place in a separate container from other jewelry pieces. Anti-tarnish strips designed for copper can slow down the process by which azurite converts to malachite and prolong the life of the stone as it currently is.
Clean azurite-malachite with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth, as even a soft toothbrush can scratch this stone. Avoid steam or ultrasonic cleaners as they can ruin the colors and damage the surface of azurite-malachite. Keep away from hot water, ovens and other hot surfaces. Do not leave in the sun.
To learn more about azurite-malachite and other gemstones, order your copy of Walter Schumann’s revised and expanded edition of Gemstones of the World.
Azurite-malachite combines two popular color palettes–blue and green–which makes it a common stone in both men’s and women’s jewelry designs. This same color blend means it’s a good stone for transitional jewelry pieces, casual enough for daytime wear and elegant enough for evening styles.
The mingling of blue and green patterns make this a popular stone to cut en cabochon–as a cabochon–or in smooth-surfaced beads. Azurite-malachite is a soft stone which does not take or maintain faceting well. Protect beads with bead caps and cabochons with cabochon mountings and settings to prevent wear.
Their colors and unique patterns are so striking, use them in simple settings so nothing distracts from them. Give them center stage and let them speak for themselves in jewelry that other people will long remember and want for themselves.

National Stone of Israel
Every Israelite considers this stone to be a national treasure. Scientists have not yet been able to unravel the mystery of its formation. Indeed, in nature it is impossible to find two identical minerals, so each specimen is considered unique.
Mineral has changed more than one name over its long history. However, most people know it as an Eilat stone.
A gem with a bizarre mixture of blue and green hues, known since biblical times.Residents of Israel are still convinced that its deposits are nothing more than the famous copies of King Solomon. According to legend, the Jewish ruler was very rich and powerful. Scripture tells about two places from which precious metals and minerals were brought to Solomon. Scientists have not yet been able to draw parallels between the ancient and modern descriptions of these territories.

The researchers consider the port city of Eilat on the shores of the Red Sea as one of the sources of untold wealth. This place is the only one in the world where deposits of Eilat stone are found. During his reign, Solomon established the extraction and sale of the mineral, which significantly strengthened the treasury of the Kingdom of Israel. The fact is that a gem is a mixture of several minerals. Among them are malachite, azurite, chrysocolla and turquoise. They are all derivatives of copper. Eilat stone is considered the first mineral in the history of civilization, from which they learned to produce copper. The red metal was extremely prized in those days. The proceeds from the sale of the mineral, which contains such a valuable ingredient, went to the construction of the first temple in Jerusalem.A unique stone and jewelry from it were kept only in the treasuries of the king.

The Eilat stone was not only a source of wealth, but also used in medicine and jewelry. In ancient Greece, copper solder was made from stone for gold products. One of the names of the stone is literally translated as “glue for gold.” The Egyptians ground the mineral into powder, mixed with water and got blue and green colors. Even after millennia, the drawings applied to the frescoes with such pigments have not faded.
King Solomon, as you know, God rewarded with wisdom, therefore the Eilat stone, so beloved by the ruler, subsequently also began to be associated with this quality. It is recommended to be purchased by those facing the problem of choice and decision-making. Lithotherapists recommend women to wear jewelry with this stone, believing that it is able to protect them from gynecological diseases.

The gem is considered the official symbol of Israel. The development of deposits in recent times began in the middle of the 20th century. However, all work had to be stopped due to unprofitability and depletion of reserves. In the 70s, the industrial development of the mineral was resumed, and a large factory for its processing was built. This place is especially popular with tourists these days, because minerals can be purchased at the enterprise without fear of their authenticity. Today, in the area of the Eilat stone deposit, a national park has been created, on the territory of which any geological research is prohibited.

Eilat stone is not considered precious, but due to its rarity it is highly valued. In addition, the natural reserves of the mineral are depleted over time. Thus, its production in the near future can be completely stopped, which gives rise to an increase in demand and prices.
In order not to make a mistake and not accidentally acquire a fake, one must remember one interesting property of the Eilat stone. Since the mineral is inherently hydrous copper silicate, it adheres to the tongue. Therefore, it is enough to touch the sample with the tip of your tongue and check if it is real.
magical and healing properties, origin
Eilat stone is mined in the only place on Earth
In Israel, not far from the picturesque place of Eilat, south of the Arava Desert, there is the Timna Natural Park. The whole world is known as a unique place as the Mines of King Solomon. It is here, in the only place on earth, that the amazing Eilat stone is mined. It is a semi-precious mineral, a fantastic natural synthesis of malachite and azurite, as well as with an admixture of other copper minerals. Many dreamed of the innumerable mythical treasures of King Solomon, but not everyone knows that the most precious wealth of the royal natural mines is the Eilat stone. Inexperienced sculptors confuse it with malachite, lapis lazuli, chrysoccola. What makes a gem different from other natural gifts? In addition to the extraordinary shade and properties with which it is endowed, the main feature is in its deposit. The stone is mined exclusively in Israel, or rather, only in a place located not far from ancient Eilat. There is undeservedly little information about this unusual mineral. Let’s find out how it is used, what properties the mineral has.
Contents of the article:
Origin of the mineral
The history of the origin of the stone is literally as old as the world. It has been mined since the reign of the wise and just king Solomon. That is why the people call the gem the stone of King Solomon.Soon, its production was stopped, and resumed only in the twentieth century. Gemologists were divided on the issue of origin. Some believe that the Eilat stone is the result of the intergrowth of malachite, turquoise and chrysoccola. According to another point of view, the mineral arose as a result of accretion of azurite and malachite. There is still no final opinion, since both explanations from the point of view of science are quite explainable and true.
The question of the origin of the Eilat stone is still open
The physical properties of the Israeli gem are a high degree of hardness, strength, absolute moisture resistance. The stone is considered a national treasure of Israel, since it is mined only in this country. The unpleasant news is that the natural reserves of the mineral have been depleted by the order, its production has practically ceased to date. It was this factor that influenced the pricing. Even small minerals are expensive, and the demand for jewelry inlaid with an extraordinary gem is great. For everyone who wants to get acquainted with the history and peculiarities of mining, at the entrance to the city of Eilat there is a factory-shop, founded in 1973.

ANCIENT GEM FROM THE KOPE OF KING SOLOMON / Blog Sodahomedecor
Chrysocolla translated from Greek means “golden glue” (from the Greek.chrysós – gold and kólla – glue; in ancient times it was used for soldering gold items) mineral, water-containing copper silicate. Characterized by a bright turquoise, bluish-green color. Chrysocolla is a mineral with a history. Back in the 4th century BC, the ancient Greek philosopher Theophrastus mentioned this mineral as an adhesive for gold products.
Powdered chrysocolla served as the first eyeshadow used by the inhabitants of Ancient Egypt. In the same place, mosaic floors were laid with chrysocolla tiles. From powdered chrysocolla, the Egyptians made blue or blue paints for painting walls: we can still see frescoes and wall paintings – the paints have not faded for millennia! According to historians, the biblical king Solomon decorated his palace with this stone. One of the names of chrysocolla is Eilat stone . According to legend, on the shores of the Eilat Gulf of the Red Sea, the mines of King Solomon were located, in which, along with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and other precious stones, this wonderful gem was mined. The chrysocolla stone is still mined there. However, mineralogists specify: the “Eilat stone” is not pure chrysocolla, but veins of this mineral in light sandstones. In our country, chrysocolla is mined in the Urals and Transbaikalia.
Renaissance artists used chrysocolla as a mineral pigment in their blue paint. At first glance, chrysocolla may resemble turquoise or malachite, but it is still a completely different stone. Chrysocolla is a valuable collectible mineral. The most noble and rare variety of chrysocolla are stones of blue and blue shades with black veins. This mineral has long been mined in different parts of the world, so it also has several names. Chrysocolla was called goldglass, copper or mountain greens, copper malachite, Dushan jade (Chinese name), cornuit (named after the American mineralogist F. Cornu). In Chile, chrysocolla is called 90 140 Lanka.
Astrologers believe that chrysocolla suits Sagittarius and Taurus, Libra, Cancer and Aquarius.Lithotherapists believe that this stone protects a person from stress and apathy, helps with nervous stress and sleep disorders.
If you look closely, the bizarre, shimmering, drawing emerging from the depths of the gem resembles the outlines of the surface of our beautiful planet in miniature.
Sodahomedecor designers are very fond of chrysocolla for its deep color, which can decorate and complement any space – from the discreet concentration of the study to the bright light of the living room.Exclusive furniture handles with chrysocolla, set in fine metal, are suitable for any setting. Designer door handles, cabinet handles, kitchen furniture handles will completely change the look of the interior chosen for them. Combining with wood, fabric, leather, glass and metal, the chrysocolla gem changes surprisingly depending on the lighting. In furniture knobs-knobs, chrysocolla, depending on the selected base metal, will mysteriously sparkle or shine brightly.
Glowing from the inside, the chrysocolla in the Sodahomedecor designer furniture handles resembles an exclusive piece of jewelry.

Not far from Eilat, in the south of the Arava Desert, there is the natural park Timna , better known as the “mine of King Solomon”. It is here, and only here, in the only place on Earth, that a unique natural mineral is mined – the semi-precious Eilat stone.
Eilat stone
Eilat stone is a fantastic natural mixture of malachite and azurite. Separately from each other, these semi-precious stones are found in nature quite often, but their natural compound is mined only in one single place on Earth – in the south of Israel, near Eilat .
It just so happened that it was in this place that factors such as tectonic activity, movement of magma and high temperature led to the fusion of these minerals.Depending on which mineral is predominant, the Eilat stone can be either blue-green or green-blue. That is why each Eilat stone is unique.
The stone was mined during the time of King Solomon. Over time, its production was stopped and resumed only in the twentieth century.

his country into the most powerful and richest state of its time, but also

later this term was used to define many completely different gems,
therefore, information about chrysocolla is often contradictory. They confused her with
malachite, and azurite, and turquoise – it should be noted that
often chrysocolla grows together with the aforementioned stones, and sometimes its
used as a substitute for them, since the color of some varieties
very similar. Sometimes chrysocolla inclusions are painted in a characteristic color.
quartz or chalcedony. The only thing that all types of chrysocolla have in common is
this is what it is found in copper deposits, which gives it
such a picturesque blue and blue scale.
Egyptians made frit from chrysocolla with malachite – blue and green
paints for creating wall murals, paintings on dishes and jewelry
jewelry, and cosmetic “shadows” that Egyptian women
covered the eyelids. This semi-precious paint has survived to this day – unique
the composition gave it great durability, and it can still be seen today
on objects of everyday life or worship found in tombs or excavations.
The famous Greek scientist Theophrastus as early as four centuries BC
gave the mineral its current name, derived from the words chrysos
(“Gold”) and kolla (“glue”) – together this was supposed to mean “golden
glue “or” gold solder “, as in those days the stone was used for
soldering gold.It was often used as a copper ore, along with the same
malachite – the beauty of these minerals for ancient people was not so
great importance, much more important was the ability to get
previously precious copper. Now chrysocolla is a decorative material,
looks great in jewelry and stone carving
thanks to the bizarre swirls, spots and intricacies of azure,
emerald, black brown, blue.
Traditional healers consider chrysocolla to be a primordially “female” stone, ideal
suitable for the treatment of specific gynecological and “female”
diseases, for example, ovarian dysfunction, inflammation of the uterine appendages,
menstrual irregularities. It is useful to wear chrysocolla during

decorations, but also laying out raw crystals in the room or
applying a piece of stone to a diseased organ, in case of female ailments –
to the lower abdomen.
Chrysocolla personifies femininity and passivity, emotions she
makes a woman softer, kinder, more compassionate, develops a motherly
instinct. If a man wants to see in his wife a gentle, affectionate,

forgetting about the family in favor of a career, then he should give her a piece of jewelry with
with this stone or put a couple of crystals in the house. And for the ladies chrysocolla

companion is a kind of “love magnet”, which is useful and
lonely hearts, and successful married couples. Chrysocolla is called and
the winner of fears: to calm down, drive away unnecessary illusions,
feelings and internal tension, it is enough to squeeze for a few minutes
gem in hand.Chrysocolla relieves the oppressive feeling of shame, softens
anger, strengthens the mind and intuition. This is a talisman for scientists
naturalists, inventors, everyone involved in scientific
activity – the stone brings wisdom, clarifies the picture
the surrounding world.
Chrysocolla is also suitable for priests, missionaries, psychologists, doctors
ambulances, healers, social workers – in short, everyone who
dedicated himself to serving others, supporting them spiritually and
physically. She awakens compassion and mercy, tolerance,
virtue, receptivity to divine will, drives away darkness.
Astrologically, chrysocolla suits those born under the signs of Sagittarius,
Taurus, Leo, Aquarius, Libra and Cancer.
Thanks to these discoveries, we learned that Solomon
was not only a clever horse trader, but also an industrialist. All over
it is likely that he held a monopoly on the production of copper, which allowed him
dictate prices and receive those huge profits, which are referred to in
Bible.
The fame of the wisdom of Solomon, his wealth and the luxury of his court spread
all over the world. Ambassadors from various countries arrived in Jerusalem for
the conclusion of treaties of friendship and trade agreements. Residents of the capital
met almost daily corteges of exotic guests carrying the tsar
generous gifts. And they were undoubtedly proud that their hometown had become so
a large trade and diplomatic center.
Not true
whether, a strange feeling – half nostalgia, half hope – anxiously aches in
chest, when we learn that the tales and myths that read us at night in
childhood, turn into reality? Even if this reality is ghostly, as in
the case with the story of the powerful Solomon, from whose wealth is not
nothing remained: his country soon after the death of the king was scattered and
divided by wars and civil strife, the famous Temple destroyed, treasures
plundered. But it remained – a modest “Elat stone” chrysocolla, in
once again reminded us of the ancient days, although he himself, with a magnificent
court of Solomon probably played the role of a modest, ordinary ornamental
material. However – who knows, after all, not only by a brilliant reign
Solomon became famous, but also a great love story that inspired
writers and poets of the whole world, and did the soft power of chrysocolla help
to the beautiful Shebe to win the heart of an unyielding king, so that for centuries
captured “Song of Songs” ?…. Be that as it may, Elat stone
for a long time survived the fabulous mines of Elat, which showed him to the world, probably
for the first time, and this proves once again: the glory of the earth is passing, and
only stones glue the fragments of history together like a metaphysical gold
the glue of eternity.

Very unusual combination of green and blue elements, right? The fact is that, in fact, the Eilat stone is a mixture of several minerals, including malachite, azurite, chrysocolla and turquoise. The only field in the world where it is mined is in Israel, in the Timna Valley.

The Eilat stone has been known for a long time. Archaeological research has shown that mining in the Timna Valley dates back to the late Neolithic. True, our ancestors then were more interested not in the beauty of the stone. It is considered the first mineral in the history of our civilization, from which they learned to produce copper. For millennia, the Timna Valley has been a major metallurgical center.
Eilat stone was also used in medicine and jewelry. And the Egyptians, grinding the mineral into powder and mixing with water, received a blue and green dye.
By the way, studying this area in the 30s of the last century, American archaeologist Nelson Gluck (one of the largest specialists in biblical archeology) suggested that mines in Timna are the famous # mines # king # solomon – one of the sources of wealth for the kingdom of Israel.
This hypothesis is still being discussed. But nevertheless one more name “Solomon’s stone” was assigned to the mineral.

Over the years, the mines have been depleted. In the early 2000s, Timna Valley was declared a national park, which I would very much like to visit someday.
