The franchise began play in 1967 as the Minnesota North Stars, earning two trips to the Stanley Cup® Finals (losing to the New York Islanders in 1980-81 and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1990-91) before relocating to Dallas after the 1992-93 season and dropping “North” from their name.

The team immediately brought a winning tradition to Dallas, making the Playoffs four of its first five seasons. Then came the back-to-back seasons The Big D will remember forever. The following season, the Stars again made the Stanley Cup® Finals, only to lose to the New Jersey Devils in six games, the final defeat on a double-overtime goal.

The Stars vaulted into the Playoffs in six of the seven ensuing seasons, making it only as far as the conference finals.

In 2017, right-winger Jere Lehtinen, who spent his entire NHL career in Dallas, became the fifth Stars player to have his number retired, joining Modano, Bill Masterton, Bill Goldsworthy, and Neal Broten.

New TV deal

By far the biggest change to this year’s NHL TV schedule is the new media rights deal the league reached earlier this year. The NHL in the 2021-22 season begins a new seven-year media rights deal with ESPN and Turner Sports. ESPN and ABC will combine to air 28 regular season games, while TNT is scheduled for 50. The ESPN+ streaming service and Hulu will air 75. All national games, including those on ESPN+ and Hulu, are exclusive (meaning there will not be local RSN coverage)

How to stream the NHL TV schedule

If you do not have a cable subscription, you can stream NHL games on ESPN, ABC and TNT through YouTube TV, Hulu, Sling or DirecTV Stream. Fubo has ESPN and ABC but not TNT. To stream games on ESPN+ or Hulu, you will have to subscribe to one or both service.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD SCHEDULE?

Each team has one bye week between Weeks 6 and 14. Determining where that bye week falls for each team presents additional challenges for the schedule makers.

For example, the league tries to limit the number of times a team that played the week before has to face a team coming off its bye.

The schedule makers also consider where a team’s bye week fell in past seasons. A team with an early bye week one year will receive consideration for a later bye week the next season. 

Even after all the factors have been weighed and the schedule is produced, the league occasionally has to make adjustments on short notice.

A rare November blizzard in Buffalo in 2014 prompted the league to move the Bills’ Week 12 home game against the New York Jets — originally a Sunday game in Orchard Park — to Monday of the same week in Detroit’s Ford Field.

In 2017, Hurricane Irma caused the league to postpone the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Week 1 game in Miami against the Dolphins in the interest of public safety. While not ideal, the teams both had a Week 11 bye, so the game was played that week and they had an unexpected Week 1 bye.

With games on Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays, the schedule makers have to allow enough time between games so teams are not at a disadvantage against an opponent that has had more time to prepare and rest. Teams scheduled to play on Thursday nights will not have to play a short week more than once a season.

The league tries to limit the number of consecutive road games any team plays to two games, with emphasis at the beginning and end of the season. Sometimes, however, the schedule makers cannot avoid placing a team on the road for three straight weeks.

Schedule makers also work to avoid putting teams in a position where they cross the country too often over a short period of time or endure inordinate travel that may put the players at a competitive disadvantage compared with the club they’re playing.

The league tries to avoid scheduling teams that play on the road on Monday nights with an away game the following week to avoid having two road games separated by a short week.

The process is challenging, and there may be no such thing as a perfect schedule, but the schedule makers consistently provide the NFL’s fans and broadcast partners with a compelling and entertaining slate of games week after week.

Maryland again? Gophers, Terrapins meet for sixth straight year

The Gophers play in the Big Ten’s West Division, which means they face Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin every football season. If it seems as if they have another annual foe in that group, that’s not far off. On Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium, the Gophers will play Maryland for the sixth consecutive season.

The Terrapins, a member the East Division, have been on Minnesota’s schedule since the 2016 season and have won three of the five meetings. They’ll rotate off the Gophers schedule next season, when Minnesota’s three East opponents will be Rutgers (home), Michigan State (away) and Penn State (away).

The Big Ten has announced schedules through the 2025 season, and Michigan State will be on the Gophers slate in each of the next four years. Penn State and Rutgers will be on Minnesota’s schedule twice from 2022-25, with Indiana, Maryland, Michigan and Ohio State once each.

Here’s a look at the Gophers-Maryland series, with its next matchup set for College Park in 2024:

2016, Gophers 31, Maryland 10: In the first meeting between the schools since the 1977 Hall of Fame Bowl (Terrapins, 17-7), Rodney Smith rushes for 144 yards and two TDs as Minnesota rolls in College Park. Freshman defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. caps the win with an 82-yard interception return for a TD.

2017, Maryland 24, Gophers 17: Ty Johnson’s 34-yard TD run with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter gives the visiting Terrapins the victory in Fleck’s first season. Winfield aggravates a hamstring injury from training camp and is lost for the season.

2018, Maryland 42, Gophers 13: The Terps average 49.2 yards on five offensive touchdowns in College Park, taking advantage of the absence of Winfield, who suffers a broken foot early in the game and is lost for the season. The Gophers were playing with heavy hearts, three days after the death of former teammate Nick Connelly because of a rare form of cancer.

2019, Gophers 52, Maryland 10: The Gophers amass 498 yards of offense in Minneapolis and get a 72-yard interception return for a TD from Coney Durr in routing the Terps. Winfield avoids the Maryland injury hex and finishes with six tackles and an interception.

2020, Maryland 45, Gophers 44 (OT): The Terrapins roll to 675 yards of offense and overcome a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime against the visiting Gophers. Maryland goes up 45-38 in overtime before Seth Green scores on a 2-yard run for the Gophers. However, Brock Walker misses the extra-point attempt, ending the game.

XVI Summer Paralympic Games in Tokyo will be held from August 24 to September 5, 2021.

A total of 539 sets of awards will be drawn in Japan. The Games will feature 22 sports. Badminton and taekwondo will be included in the Paralympics program for the first time. They will replace sailing and one of the disciplines of Paralympic football.

Russian athletes at the Paralympic Games will not be able to fly the national flag due to the sanctions of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).The Russians will perform under the abbreviation RPC (Russian Paralympic Committee) and under the white flag with the RPC emblem. The national anthem will not be able to sound in their honor; instead, the introduction to the Concerto No. 1 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky will be used.

The final composition of the Russian team for participation in the Paralympics 2020 included 241 athletes (129 men and 112 women) from 50 regions of the country, including six athletes from the Altai Territory. Athletes from the Russian Federation will compete for medals in 19 sports.

Opening Ceremony

The 2020 Summer Paralympics Opening Ceremony will take place on Tuesday, August 24, in Tokyo at the National Stadium. It will start at 14:00 Moscow time. The opening can be watched live on Match TV.

The event, like the rest of the Paralympics, will be held with empty stands. It largely repeats the course and structure of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Greece will be the first to enter the arena and Japan will be the last.

The standard-bearers of our national team at the opening will be the six-time world champion in athletics in short-distance running Andrey Vdovin and two-time champion of the Paralympics in running 1500 meters Elena Pautova.

IPC President Andrew Parsons will deliver a speech after the Country Parade. At the end of his speech, he will give the floor to Emperor Naruhito of Japan, who will officially announce the opening of the Games. After the words of the emperor, the Paralympic flag will be raised over the stadium, simultaneously with the performance of the Paralympic anthem.

Athletes, coaches and officials will then take the oath. The Japanese athlete will take the Paralympic Oath, reaffirming, on behalf of all participants in the Games, their commitment to the principles of fair wrestling and the ideals of the Paralympic movement.
