About our program
Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) is a public teaching hospital affiliated with Stony Brook University Medical Center and Northwell Health. The 19-story, 631-bed Level I Trauma Center is located at 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow, NY.

NuHealth Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program:
The Orthopedics Residency Program was established at Nassau University Medical Center in 2015 with the mission of providing a broad experience in orthopedics in a supportive learning environment. Our residents have a strong educational program combined with extensive clinical experience, including daily outpatient clinics for sports medicine, spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, fracture management, hand surgery, and joint replacement surgery. Residents also embrace our Level 1 trauma service and interact in our multidisciplinary hip fracture service.
The program includes rotations specific to each major orthopedic specialty to provide a focused experience. Included are both outpatient and inpatient experiences, as well as operative and non-operative treatments for a wide range of orthopedic conditions. The emphasis in clinical training is on giving each Resident sufficient accountability to ensure that upon completion of training, they have the experience and knowledge to make important clinical decisions, as well as the skills to perform a wide range of major and minor orthopedic procedures. The responsibility of residents increases with the level of knowledge and skills, and their experience in the protective environment of the hospital with a very experienced and academically involved nursing staff. In particular, there is extensive clinical experience in orthopedic traumatology, outpatient clinical practice, orthopedic sports medicine and spinal surgery.
A didactic program in basic and clinical sciences is taught by the faculty with an emphasis on the participation of residents. In addition to these classes, there are grand tours presented by faculty every Wednesday morning. Clinical training is reinforced by conferences in all areas such as indications conference, journal club, fractures, morbidity and mortality, compliance, and physical examination review. To encourage active and ongoing research, residents present research at bi-monthly meetings led by program mentors, where residents and faculty can discuss the design and implementation of research and quality improvement programs. They are actively involved in the design of studies and present them to the institution’s IRB. Our clinical rotation includes: Adult Orthopedic, Arm, Spine, Pediatric, Emergency Medicine, Sports Medicine, Trauma and Fracture, Adult and Adult Orthopedics at Good Samaritan Hospital, Pediatric Orthopedics at Stony Brook University and orthopedic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
After completing a residency in orthopedic surgery, these physicians will be able to evaluate and treat most orthopedic conditions. They will be qualified in outpatient orthopedic surgery services and will have extensive experience in most orthopedic trauma conditions. This experience will equip these physicians with the tools they need to become a successful practicing orthopedic surgeon.
