Understanding Youth T-Shirt Sizing
Selecting the right t-shirt size for young boys is crucial for comfort and style. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the world of youth t-shirt sizing, ensuring you choose the perfect fit every time.
Methods for Determining Boys’ T-Shirt Size
There are three primary methods to determine the correct t-shirt size for boys:
- Garment measurements
- Body measurements
- Height-based sizing
Each method offers unique advantages, and understanding how to use them can help you make informed decisions when shopping for youth t-shirts.
Youth T-Shirt Size Charts: Garment Measurements
Garment measurements provide a direct way to assess t-shirt fit. The two key measurements are:
- Length: Measured from the top to the bottom of the t-shirt’s front
- Chest Width: Measured edge-to-edge across the fullest part of the chest

Youth XS | 18″ | 15″ |
Youth S | 19″ | 15.5″ |
Youth M | 21″ | 16″ |
Youth L | 23″ | 18″ |
Youth XL | 25″ | 19″ |

Youth M | 53 cm | 41 cm |
Youth L | 58 cm | 46 cm |
Youth XL | 63 cm | 48 cm |
It’s important to note that sleeve length is not typically included in these charts due to variations in t-shirt styles.
Body Measurements for T-Shirt Sizing
Using body measurements can provide a more personalized fit. The key measurements to take are:
- Bust: Circumference around the fullest part of the chest
- Waist: Circumference around the natural waistline, just above the navel

Toddler and Junior T-Shirt Sizing
For younger children and teenagers, different sizing systems are often used. Understanding these can help you choose the right size as your child grows.

It’s important to note that junior sizes are not cut to standard sizes and may vary between brands.
Tips for Choosing the Right Youth T-Shirt Size
Selecting the perfect t-shirt size for a young boy involves more than just consulting a size chart. Here are some additional factors to consider:
- Growth spurts: Consider buying a slightly larger size to accommodate rapid growth.
- Brand variations: Size charts can differ between brands, so always check specific brand guidelines.
- Fabric composition: Some materials may shrink after washing, affecting the fit.
- Intended use: For sports or active wear, a looser fit might be preferable.
- Personal preference: Some children prefer a tighter or looser fit.
Is it better to size up or down when in doubt? Generally, sizing up is recommended for growing children. A slightly larger t-shirt can be worn longer and may be more comfortable, especially in warm weather.
Frequently Asked Questions About Youth T-Shirt Sizing
To address common concerns and queries about youth t-shirt sizing, here are answers to some frequently asked questions:
How often should I measure my child for t-shirt sizing?
Children grow at different rates, but it’s a good idea to take measurements every 6-12 months or before making a significant clothing purchase.
Can adult small sizes be substituted for youth large sizes?
While sizes may sometimes overlap, it’s not recommended to substitute adult sizes for youth sizes. Youth t-shirts are designed with different proportions to fit growing bodies better.
How do I measure my child accurately for a t-shirt?
Use a flexible measuring tape and measure over light clothing. For chest measurements, measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape parallel to the ground. For height, measure from the top of the head to the floor with the child standing straight against a wall.
What if my child’s measurements don’t align with the size chart?
If measurements fall between sizes, it’s usually best to choose the larger size. You can also contact the brand’s customer service for specific advice on their sizing.
Are youth t-shirt sizes consistent across all brands?
While there are general standards, sizes can vary between brands. Always check the specific brand’s size chart when available.
How should a properly fitting youth t-shirt look?
A well-fitting t-shirt should be comfortable, allowing for ease of movement. The shoulder seams should sit at the edge of the shoulders, and the hem should fall below the waistband of pants or shorts.
Understanding youth t-shirt sizing can seem complex, but with the right information and tools, you can ensure a comfortable and stylish fit for any young boy. Remember to consider factors beyond just the numbers on a size chart, such as personal preference and intended use. By taking accurate measurements and referring to appropriate size charts, you’ll be well-equipped to choose the perfect t-shirt size every time.
Boy’s Youth/Junior T-shirt Size
There are lots of cool t-shirts out there, just waiting to be put on. But make sure that your boy is wearing the right t-shirt size….
How to Determine Boys’ T-Shirt Size?
Boys’ t-shirt size can be determined in three different ways, by either body measurements (chest and waist measurement), body height or by garment-specific measurements (t-shirt measurements). Let’s go:
T-Shirt Size by Garment Measurements
T-shirt Measurements:
Length: T-shirt length in front, top to bottom.
Chest Width: T-shirt width edge-to-egde (not circumference) over fullest part of chest.
Use measurements to determine boys’ t-shirt size with the t-shirt size chart below.

Size | Length | Chest | Youth XS | 18” | 15” |
Youth S | 19” | 15. 5” |
Youth M | 21” | 16” |
Youth L | 23” | 18” |
Youth XL | 25” | 19” |
Note: Sleeve length is not included, because it varies a lot with different t-shirt styles.

Youth XL | 63 cm | 48 cm |
Note: Sleeve length is not included, because it varies a lot with different t-shirt styles.
T-Shirt Size Chart by Body Measurements
To determine t-shirt size from body measurements, you need to measure:
Bust: circumference around bust at the fullest part – use a soft, flexible measuring tape.
Waist: circumference around your natural waistline, just above the navel (narrowest/slimmest part of waist/torso)
Use measuremens to determine your UK t-shirt size with the t-shirt size charts below:

Ann Arbor Tees – What’s the deal with youth shirts, anyways?
Sometimes they have numbers for sizes. They don’t always come in the same colors as adult shirts. Most of the time they cost more than the adult equivalent. What gives?
These are all great questions, curious blog reader! Pretty much everyone who has placed an order for youth shirts has wondered these exact same things.
First things first: youth t-shirt sizing
Youth shirts are sized a little bit differently than adult shirts. Some brands use the standard sizing that you think of with adult tees – extra small, small, medium, large, and extra large. However, some brands use a numbering system for youth tees.
There are also sizing options for infants and toddlers. Since younger kiddos tend to be more variable in their sizes, it’s usually best to go by their height and weight when selecting a size rather than their age. Infant and toddler sizing varies by brand, but here are a few sample size charts for some garments:
Smaller shirts = less room for printing on the shirt
Since youth shirts are smaller than adult shirts, there is a smaller area available to print on. If you’re placing an order with the same art on both youth and adult tees, you have a couple of different options to deal with this size difference in your design.
One option is to keep the same size art on all shirts. Our art team would make the design as large as possible on the youth shirt, and then use that exact same size art on the adult shirts.
Sometimes, keeping the same size art on all garments isn’t the best option. Think of how silly it would look if you used the tiny art for a newborn onesie on an adult XL shirt! In this case, we would resize the art to be smaller on the youth tees, and larger on the adult tees.
Colors and cost and adult correlates, oh my!
There are a few more things to keep in mind when placing an order for youth tees. Let’s say you found the absolute perfect color t-shirt for your adult t-shirt order. How exciting! Then, you decide you want to add a few youth sizes for the youngsters in your group. Sometimes, the youth equivalent will not stock all the colors that the adult style does. This is just because there is less demand for youth tees. If you find yourself in this situation, do not fear! Our talented sales team will help you find a youth shirt that’s as close as possible to the color you selected for the adult tees.
Here is an example of an adult and youth shirt that does not come in the exact same color. We had to use very similar but slightly different garment colors.
Another common question about youth tees is, “Youth shirts are smaller. They contain less fabric. So why do they cost a little bit more than the adult tees I’m ordering?” Just like the reason suppliers do not stock a ton of youth t-shirt colors, the demand for youth shirts is not as high. This is reflected in the higher price. It’s only a small difference in price though – less than a dollar in most cases.

How to Correctly Size Your T-shirt Design for Different Size T-Shirts – Rozzy Crafts
Introduction
Hey there Rozzy Crafters! Have you been stressing over what size your t-shirt design should be when you have multiple sizes to make? Well you’re in luck! This tutorial will lay it all out for you for all different sized shirts. We’ll be going in depth on tips and tricks for sizing your design for different sized shirts.
The Search for the Perfect Method
When I first started designing and making shirts, I was terrified that whatever I did would be completely wrong. The very first shirt I made was definitely a learning experience and my sizing was WAY off. So, I did what any other Pinterest-addicted crafter would do, and hit the internet for more information.
It seemed like each site or blog I visited had different recommendations. That scared me even more than my own guessing. My search led me to the consensus that no two people give the same answer. My math-centric mind then led me to the conclusion that I should just go off each shirt measurement and create my own sizes. I needed to find a way to make sure I could make the same design fit multiple sized t-shirts.
Now, the easiest way would be of course to make them all the same size, however, this did not suit me. I knew that a design that looked perfect on a size small adult t-shirt would not look right on a size 3XL and vice versa. I decided to match the size difference in shirts by changing the size of the design for each shirt size.
Standard T-Shirt and Design Sizes
Standard T-shirt Width for Adult Classic Tees
Small – 18 inches
Medium – 20 inches
Large – 22 inches
X-Large – 24 inches
2X-Large – 26 inches
3X-Large – 28 inches
4X-Large – 30 inches
Standard T-shirt Design Widths for Adult Classic Tees
Optimally, you need 5-8 inches of blank space on either side of a design to make it look right (for adult shirts). Here are the width sizes that I have come up with that work best for the shirts that I have made:
Small – Design width no bigger than 9.5 – 10.5 inches
Medium – Design width no bigger than 10 – 11 inches
Large – Design width no bigger than 10.5 – 11.5 inches
X-Large – Design width no bigger than 11 – 12 inches
2X-Large – Design width no bigger than 12.5 – 13.5 inches
3X-Large – Design width no bigger than 13 – 14 inches
4X-Large – Design width no bigger than 13.5 – 14.5 inches
Standard T-shirt Width for Youth Classic Tees
Extra Small – 16 inches
Small – 17 inches
Medium – 18 inches
Large – 19 inches
X-Large – 20 inches
Standard T-shirt Design Widths for Youth Classic Tees
Extra Small – Design width no bigger than 8.5 – 9.5 inches
Small – Design width no bigger than 9 – 10 inches
Medium – Design width no bigger than 9.5 – 10.5 inches
Large – Design width no bigger than 10 – 10. 5 inches
X-large – Design width no bigger than 10 – 11 inches
Disclaimer: No two shirts measure exactly the same. Different brands, colors, and sizes can vary the true measurements of each individual shirt. Always measure your shirts to make sure that design sizes you have previously used still stand true. To avoid waste of material, you can cut a piece of scrap paper to the size of your design and use that as a test prior to cutting out your vinyl.
Note: Length is unfortunately not standard with shirts and varies greatly brand to brand. And variance in design length size is exponential, so I did not include a sizing guide for length in this tutorial. My rule of thumb is measure, measure, measure before you cut!
Now let’s put all this information to work!
Supplies
Step 1 – Size the Design Using a Template
**This post focuses on using Cricut Design Space, but everything applies equally well to Silhouette Studio. A note on using templates in Studio is included at the end**
Once I create the design, I use the template option that is available on Cricut Design Space to create a “mock-up” of my shirt. I do this to make sure the ratio of my design is correct. Check out the video down below for step by step instructions on how to utilize this option.
Using the templates, you can customize them to match your desired shirt. First, pick the color of your desired shirt.
Choose the style and size of the desired shirt (it only goes up to 2XL on the size options, but the “Custom” option can be used for shirts larger than 2XL).
Remove the grid lines under “Settings.”
Then adjust the size of the design to be more aesthetically pleasing.
Once you are happy with your design, you can take a screen shot of the “mock-up” and send it to your customer for final approval before cutting your vinyl.
The same above can all be used for kids, toddler, and baby options. They are included in the template options. Just change the shirt style option.
You can then adjust your design to fit the smaller sized shirt
Again, no two shirts are exactly the same size, so always measure before you make your cut!
Step 2 – Adjust the Design Size
Once I am completely happy with my design and get my customer’s approval, I will begin my cutting. I adjust the width and the length of the design for the shirt sizes that I have. Make sure you design sizing is locked so that the ratio of width to length remains the same for each size you are making.
The lock/unlock option is located at the bottom left corner of your selection.
Or above your sizing details in the top menu bar
To adjust the size of you design, simply type in your desired width into the sizing details in the top menu bar or adjust it using the sizing adjustment button at the bottom right corner of your selection. The height will adjust accordingly if the design is locked.
This specific cut is for a 2X shirt, so the width is between 12.5 and 13.5 inches and the height was adjusted by the design being locked when the width is increased.
Make the cuts you will need for your first shirt.
Then adjust the size of the design for the next size needed. Next is a size large, so adjust the template to a size large.
Then adjust the width of the design. For a size large the width should be between 10.5 and 11.5 inches. When the width is adjusted, the height automatically adjusts if the design is locked.
The next shirt is a size youth small of the same design. Again, change the template size and adjust the width to match the above suggested size between 9 and 10 inches.
It is not necessary to change the template size if you are comfortable with the way your design looks. You can hide the template layer and just adjust your width/height for your design as desired. I like to take that extra step to make sure the design looks correct on all sizes prior to cutting each one.
Step 3 – Cutting and Pressing
You can continue adjusting the size of your design and cutting them for each of the shirts in the various sizes you have. Make sure that each group of cuts is kept together. I will stick the different layers together after they have been weeded and will mark in the corner what the size is. This insures that the correctly sized design is with the right shirt size. You can always cut then press each shirt to avoid any mix ups.
Prior to pressing, fold your shirt in half and press or iron it. This removes any moisture that it may have and also creates a crease you can use for centering the design on the shirt.
Always measure your placement prior to pressing. I prefer to use a clear fabric ruler so that I can see through it. Designs should start 2-3 inches below the collar for adult sizes and 1-2 inches below collar for youth sizes. Personally I do 2 inches below for small and medium adult sizes, 2.5 inches below for large and X-large adults sizes, and 3 inches below for 2X-large and above sizes. I use the same adjustment for kid sizes; 1 inch below for extra small and small sizes, 1.5 inches below for medium, and 2 inches below for large and X-large. Again, you want your design to consistently look the same on each shirt you make, regardless of size difference.
See the charts below for quick reference to use when deciding design sizing and placement:

Shirt Size | Standard Width | Suggested Design Width | Below Collar Placement |
Small | 18 inches | 9.5-10.5 inches | 2 inches |

We hope this tutorial was able to help you with some of the questions you had regarding proper design sizing for various shirt sizes.
If you have any questions or suggestions, let us know in the comments below or on Facebook!
Tips for Using Silhouette Studio
If you are using the Silhouette Studio, there are a few extra steps to create mock-ups, but it is still easy. The first thing you need to do is to use an image of the product you are designing. For the sake of this tutorial, we will use a shirt. Find an image of a shirt that you have permission to use. Right click and copy the image.
Then go into your Silhouette Studio and paste the image onto your mat. You can also save the image to your computer and upload it into Silhouette Studio.
Once you have your template image added to your mat, bring your design in front of the image. You then resize your image and get your placement correct. Lastly, take a screen shot and you have a mock-up ready to send to your customer for final approval.
How to order the right sizes & quantity
“A shirt that is too small stays in the box, while a shirt that is too big can still be worn.” – Mike Callahan, sales manager
Other Considerations Before You Order
One additional thing to consider is shrinkage. If your shirts are all 100% cotton, you may want to skew a little farther towards the larger end. If your shirts are 50/50 poly cotton you don’t have to worry as much, and if your shirts are 100% polyester, you don’t have to worry about shrinkage at all.
Another thing to consider is that many of today’s “fashion fit” styles run slightly smaller than their standard counterparts. On certain styles from American Apparel, Anvil, Next Level, and District, for example, the cut may be tapered for a slimmer fit.
This “fashion fit” may be enough to make someone who is used to fitting in a certain size wonder why it seems so tight. (Remember, Uncle Bill takes his shirt size very seriously.) Check with your sales rep if you are unsure about the cut of the particular shirt you are ordering.
Finally, think about your market or demographic. Is it a BBQ festival? You might want to skew a bit larger. Is it a yoga retreat? Maybe skew smaller. Is it band merch for people in their 20’s? Go with the fashion fit.
Take all these things into consideration and you will make your customers, employees, family, or fans very happy.
Ok maybe not this happy, but still.
The Ratio for Calculating T-Shirt Sizes in Your Order
A quick and easy way to remember the formula as represented in the chart above goes like this, based on a total of 10:
S – M – L – XL – 2XL = 1 – 2 – 3 – 3 – 1
So you just divide this out by the number of shirts you are ordering. For example, if you are getting 1,000 shirts, the breakdown would be:
100 (S) – 200 (M) – 300 (L) – 300 (XL) – 100 (2XL) = 1,000 shirts
You may want to add to the far ends of the spectrum, with some XS, and some 3XL, which are not accounted for in this formula but would typically be even less of a percentage than the S and 2XL sizes.
That’s it, hope this information is valuable to you!

5XL, height 180cm
I read the review that the 5XL T-shirt fits well on size 70. Maybe so, the figures are different for everyone, and everyone is wearing it differently. Someone likes it more freer, but someone back to back.
But if the shoulders are wide and the man loves loose T-shirts, I recommend taking 5XL not for 70 rr, but for 66-68. My husband is size 70 and height 180 fits well in size 6XL. Sits not as in the photo, but freely. Why a tight fit in such a large size?
T-shirt for the summer is very good – lightweight thin jersey, but does not shine through.

the best t-shirt!
cool T-shirts .. I took my work … he carries bitumen and diesel fuel, fuel oil .. I was worn out .. nothing can be washed and thrown away .. but I bought about 600-800r .. but he is still tall and with a belly .. everything short, you have to look for something else to come up .. and these on big men are just super..inexpensive, light, in summer, even in the dark, it’s not hot. and I don’t mind too much, if something really took the first 4x .. she’s a little big. ))

color mismatch
I have purchased some T-shirts from this site. When ordering, I was guided by color. On the site I chose this model and several more, in different colors. All T-shirts have the same size, but the color… In three different articles, instead of blue, put green. And this is wherever the order was blue. All T-shirts and polos. Pay attention to this. He left himself green T-shirts and did not write complaints because he liked the green one. But, instead of blue – green. I bought sizes 6 and 7 XXL

Ordered son size 5XL is Russian 70, two T-shirts, sat perfectly, covered, pretty, voluminous belly and even brightened the size of the belly, the fabric is soft.Thank you for being there, because it is very difficult to dress a man of a heroic physique beautifully and practically, and the price is simply super.

After the first wash, the collar was stretched, it looks like a T-shirt as if I wore it for several months. The material is cheap, not dense. Disappointed.

The T-shirt is good, the material is thin, soft, smooth.
Very pleasant to the body.Minus – a gray T-shirt (melange) darkens at the point of contact with water.
