How do you determine the right clothing size for your son. What measurements are needed for accurate sizing. How do international sizing standards differ for boys’ clothing.
Understanding Boys’ Clothing Sizes: The Basics
Determining the right clothing size for boys can be challenging due to the lack of a universal sizing standard among apparel manufacturers. Boys’ sizes are typically based on age, height, and weight. However, the most accurate method for finding the perfect fit involves taking specific body measurements.
Key measurements to consider include:
- Chest
- Waist
- Hip
- Inseam
- Height
In some cases, you may also need to measure the neck base and sleeve length. Once you have these measurements, you can refer to a reliable size chart to determine the appropriate clothing size for your son.
How to Measure Your Boy for Clothing
To ensure accurate measurements, use a cloth measuring tape and follow these guidelines:
- Chest: Measure the fullest part of the chest with arms relaxed at the sides. Add a small allowance for comfort.
- Waist: Measure the natural waistline, typically near the belly button.
- Hip: Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of the hips, adding an inch for ease of movement.
- Inseam: Start from the upper inner thigh and measure down to the ankle.
- Height: Measure without shoes, using a door frame as a reference point.
Pro tip: Keep an updated record of your son’s measurements on your phone or in your wallet for easy reference while shopping.

Specialized Sizing: Plus/Husky and Slim Fits
Not all boys fit into standard sizing. For those who require different proportions, manufacturers offer plus/husky and slim fit options.
Boys’ Plus/Husky Sizes
Plus or husky sizes are designed for boys with larger measurements compared to regular sizing. These sizes typically offer more room in the waist and hips.
Boys’ Slim Sizes
Slim sizes cater to boys who are taller or thinner than average for their age. These sizes provide a narrower fit in the waist and hips while maintaining appropriate length.
International Size Conversions for Boys’ Clothing
When shopping for international brands, it’s essential to understand how sizing systems differ across countries. Here’s a brief overview:
- United States: Sizes are typically labeled according to age
- United Kingdom and Australia: Similar to US sizing, with slight variations
- European countries: Sizes are based on the child’s height rather than age
To navigate these differences, refer to international conversion charts when purchasing from global brands. However, always prioritize actual measurements over age-based or height-based sizing for the best fit.
Tips for Successful Boys’ Clothing Shopping
To make your shopping experience more efficient and successful, consider these tips:
- Always refer to the specific brand’s size chart when available, as sizing can vary between manufacturers.
- When possible, bring your son shopping to try on clothes before purchasing.
- Remember that children grow quickly, so consider buying slightly larger sizes for longer wear.
- Pay attention to fabric content and care instructions, as these can affect fit and longevity.
- Consider the purpose of the clothing (e.g., school uniforms, sports, casual wear) when selecting sizes.
Common Challenges in Boys’ Clothing Sizes
Parents often face several challenges when shopping for boys’ clothing. Understanding these issues can help you make better purchasing decisions:
Inconsistent Sizing Between Brands
One of the biggest frustrations for parents is the lack of consistency in sizing between different clothing brands. A size 8 in one brand may fit like a size 6 or 10 in another. This inconsistency makes it crucial to rely on measurements rather than size numbers alone.
Rapid Growth Spurts
Boys can experience rapid growth spurts, making it challenging to keep up with their changing sizes. To address this, consider buying adjustable clothing items like pants with expandable waistbands or investing in layered pieces that can accommodate growth.
Balancing Comfort and Style
Finding clothing that is both comfortable for active boys and stylish enough to meet their preferences can be tricky. Look for brands that specialize in durable, flexible fabrics that can withstand rough play while still looking fashionable.
The Importance of Proper Fit in Boys’ Clothing
Ensuring that your son’s clothes fit properly is about more than just appearance. Proper fit contributes to comfort, confidence, and even safety in certain situations. Here’s why it matters:
- Comfort: Ill-fitting clothes can restrict movement or cause discomfort, potentially leading to distraction or irritability.
- Confidence: Well-fitting clothes can boost a child’s self-esteem and body image.
- Safety: Properly fitted clothing is especially important for activities like sports or outdoor play to prevent accidents.
- Longevity: Clothes that fit well tend to wear more evenly, potentially lasting longer.
By taking the time to find the right fit, you’re investing in your son’s comfort and well-being.
Emerging Trends in Boys’ Clothing Sizes
The world of children’s clothing is evolving, with new trends emerging to address common sizing issues:
Adaptive Clothing
More brands are introducing adaptive clothing lines designed for children with special needs or sensory sensitivities. These clothes often feature adjustable elements, softer fabrics, and easier closures.
Gender-Neutral Sizing
Some companies are moving towards more inclusive, gender-neutral sizing systems. This approach focuses on body measurements rather than traditional gendered size categories.
Tech-Enhanced Sizing
Innovative technologies like 3D body scanning and AI-powered size recommendations are beginning to appear in the children’s clothing market, promising more accurate fits for online shopping.
As these trends continue to develop, they may reshape how we approach boys’ clothing sizes in the future, potentially offering more personalized and inclusive options for all children.
Boys Size Chart | Shirts, Pants, Shoes
As a parent, one of your main responsibilities is to buy clothes for your son. However, in a world where there is no such thing as a universal sizing standard observed by all apparel manufacturers, this seemingly easy task is actually no cakewalk. And so, to help you determine your little boy’s clothing size with ease, this page provides you access to different boys size charts of various clothes and apparels.
Boys Sizes in a Nutshell
- Clothing sizes for boys are usually based on age, height, and weight. However, the best way to find the perfect fit for your son is to get accurate measurements of several key areas of his body such as the chest, waist, hip, inseam, and height. You may also need to record your neck base and sleeve length measurements. Then, refer to a reliable size chart so you can determine the appropriate clothing size for him.
- As much as possible, refer to the published size charts of the particular clothing brand you plan on buying from. Generic size charts serve as a decent guide, but they may not be as accurate.
- To measure your son’s shoe size, trace the outline of both his feet on a sheet of paper. His foot length is from the top of the longest toe to the edge of the heel. The broadest part is the width. His shoe size must fit the larger foot.
Measurement Guide for Boys
Clothing sizes for kids are usually based on age, height, and weight. However, the best way to find the perfect fit for your son is to get accurate measurements of several key areas of his body. To do this, you need a cloth measuring tape, and when you take measurements, it is best to do it over bare skin or, at the very least, tight-fitting clothes.
- Chest. When measuring the fullest part of your son’s chest area, make sure he is standing straight, with his arms relax at his side. Leave a bit of room by adding an inch or so, depending on your or your kid’s preference.
- Waist. Measure your son’s natural waist – the smallest area of the trunk. This is usually found near the belly button area.
- Hip. Use a tape measure and wrap it around the biggest part of your hips. Add an extra inch or so if you want additional comfort and for ease of movement.
- Inseam. Begin measuring from your upper and inner thigh (near the crotch area) and bring the cloth measuring tape down to your son’s ankle.
- Height. Make sure your son takes his shoes off before measuring his height. Use a door frame as a measuring point so that he can stand straight.
After you’ve successfully taken your son’s body measurements, it’s time to pick up a reliable size chart so you can determine the appropriate clothing size for him.
Pro Tip: Make your shopping experience easier by keeping an updated record of your son’s body measurements on your phone or inside your wallet. But if possible, bring your child with you whenever you go shopping. He can just try on the clothes, and you’ll immediately know if they fit him well before you buy them.

Conversion to International Sizes
Different standards, voluntary or required, are observed by different countries when it comes to classifying and labeling clothing sizes. In the United States, for example, children’s sizes are labeled according to age. Although slightly varied, the same applies in the United Kingdom and Australia. European sizing for kids, however, is a bit different. Size labels are based on the child’s height, not age.
You will have plenty of opportunities to buy clothes from international brands who may follow a different sizing system from what you’re accustomed to. That is why many find international conversion charts helpful. Should you decide to refer to one, it is recommended that you use a sizing guide that includes specific body measurements to get a more accurate fit. However, don’t forget that these conversion charts are not 100% successful in identifying your child’s clothing sizes in foreign brands. At best, they are just approximations.

Boys to Men Size Conversion
To convert boys’ clothes sizes into men’s, please be aware that boys’ shirts and pants are cut differently from men clothes. In terms of finding the right size, it is best to take measurements of your body and refer to the size charts of the clothing producer. In most cases however you will need to take the largest size of boys clothes if you normally wear the smallest size of men clothes (and vice versa).

Pro Tip: Buy shoes that have some wiggle room for your son’s toes so that his feet can breathe and roll freely in the shoes while he walks in them. A helpful trick is to add 0.5 – 0.7 inches to his actual foot length.

How to Shop for a Husky Boy
How and where do you find the perfect fit for your husky boys? Here’s a complete resource, from shirt to pants and more.
While you are all reading this I’m praying that my son didn’t go up a size. There are lots of articles out there what to do with an overweight child, and how to stop the epidemic of childhood obesity, but there is absolutely no help in how to shop for such a child. While I understand that dressing an overweight girl is more challenging I, baruch Hashem, only have experience with a husky boy. For those of you who have that challenge, this article will hopefully make that shopping process easier.
I’d like to think that the boys are fine wearing husky sizes; it’s the mothers that have a harder time.
Feel free to add your comments, shopping tips, and ideas in the comments below.
Underwear:
Since you usually have to size up so that the underwear elastic doesn’t dig into the waist, knit boxer briefs such as Gap’s work well since there is no leg opening that gets too wide.
These striped ones from the Gap, have the elastic in the knit fabric, making them more comfortable.
Pants:
The problem with husky pants is that stores don’t carry them. And since every child carries their weight differently, every company will fit differently on each child. The best thing to do is order from every single option in multiple sizes (sorry!) and try them all on. Once you find pants that fit, order more of them.
Pants must be ordered in “husky,” since sizing up doesn’t work well. Don’t be scared to order skinny husky pants (it sounds like an oxymoron) because most husky pants that aren’t skinny are terribly wide by the ankle (how fat do they think the ankles are?).
And remember: always search for coupons online before purchasing!
My favorites: For price and quality I prefer Children’s Place and H&M (though skip H&M navy since it’s not a good color. They do occasionally carry a great gray, but it’s not always in stock).
Note: H&M runs bigger. An Old Navy Husky 18 is like a 13-14 H&M
Children’s Place: Boys Skinny Chino Pants in Blue or Black (the jeans aren’t jeans, just a thicker fabric).
Old Navy: Built-in Flex Skinny/Slim khakis. These are available in lots of fun colors or classic uniform colors.
Gap: Gap Shield Reinforced Straight Pants
H&M: Skinny Fit Generous Size Jeans or Husky Twill Pants and these NEW chinos
Tops:
For most tops it’s not necessary to look for husky sizes; you can usually size up easily.
Polo Shirts:
Crewcuts and Zara long sleeve polo shirts are usually too narrow for husky kids once they are over 10 years old. Short-sleeved shirts at Children’s Place, Gap, and Target are great options. For long-sleeved shirts, there are fewer options.
If you need solid-colored or striped polos with sleeves and without words, you have three options (as always, look at for coupons and sales).
Tommy Hilfiger – There are lots of choices usually in the outlets or online. Usually, you can find great deals on the striped polos, though the cuffs stretch out quickly.
Polo Ralph Lauren – Great options in solid colors up to size 18-20.
Brooks Brothers – These run the widest; size XL (age 15-16) is bigger than RL 18-20
Button-Down Shirts:
Shirts usually look better on big guys, but not all kids are comfortable in them. Colored husky-sized shirts for weekdays tend to be very wide. Usually, regular shirts fit fine and are cheaper.
You can buy colored shirts at Children’s Place, Old Navy, and Gap.
Once your guy outgrows those brands but isn’t ready for men’s shirts you can try Brooks Brothers or Ralph Lauren. They’re pricier but they run wider and bigger.
Sweaters:
Please no ribbed, no cable, nor crew neck sweater…it makes them look heavier! V necks, half zip, henley or button-down sweaters are better options.
These are the three best options for quality and style:
Zara (currently out of stock)
J Crew Factory
Brooks Brothers (for when you outgrow the other brands)
Swimsuits:
Surprisingly, this isn’t easy. If you size up the swimming trunks get too long.
But there’s great news!
Gap started making husky trunks and rash guards. (These are currently out of stock. We did find these Lands End husky options which also look great.) Those are now the best option. Previously, I found that Target swimsuits ran wider.
If you have a guy that outgrows Gap and Target, you can buy these Old Navy Mens 8″ inseam trunks since they run shorter.
May this year be the last year that you shop for husky sizes.

Boys and Menswear Sizing | dapperQ
Many of our readers want to know what the tag sizes mean on “boys” and “menswear” clothing (in other words, size conversions.) This is a bit tricky to answer, because brands differ in their fit. The Art of Manliness fashion blog states, “Remember that every brand has a different set of models they use to design their clothing’s sizes, so a medium in one brand does not mean you’ll have the same fit in another. ” Esquire Magazine’s article “Are Your Pants Lying to You: An Investigation” reveals the size disparities between popular brands. I’ve had personal experience with this when trying on clothing from various “womenswear” departments. I’m a size 4 in one brand and a size 6 in others. I even own a few pair of size 2 pants from brands that engage in “vanity sizing.” The same holds true for shoes.
To give you a ballpark idea of standard boys and menswear sizes, I compiled information from size charts provided by some of the top selling menswear brands.

I buy Ralph Lauren Boy’s Sizes to Save Money – Do Boy’s Polo Shirts Fit Grown Men?
There’s a hilarious scene in The Office that really hits home when I binge on my favorite episodes. After being questioned about the strange look of his outfit, Dunder Mifflin fashion icon Michael Scott explains why there are buttons on the left side of his sport coat.
“There were these huge bins of clothes, and everybody was rifling through them, like crazy, and I grabbed one,” he says. “And it fit. So I don’t think that this is totally just a women’s suit. At the very least it’s bisexual.”
I don’t own any women’s clothes, at least not that I know of. Nevertheless, I relate to Michael’s pinch. At 34 years old, I still shop, for myself, in the children’s section at department stores. Namely, a significant number of the several dozen Ralph Lauren items I own are labeled XL: as in boys extra-large.
Go ahead. Poke fun. But they cost roughly half the price of adult sizes, and are of virtually indistinguishable quality.
The first thing you should know is that I’m not petite. At 5’10”, and with a face full of scruff, I haven’t been mistaken for a teenager since I stopped being one 15 years ago. Furthermore, my weight hovers around the 200-pound mark, yet I manage to fit comfortably in Ralph Lauren youth tops, from simple polos to bright rugby shirts.
The second relevant note is that I have been hoarding Ralph Lauren for two decades. That’s a story for another time — a tale of hip-hop culture re-appropriating archetypal country club fashion — but I mention my background here because in all my time collecting “Lo,” as the boom bap generation coolly calls Ralph Lauren, I’ve met a number of other grown men who secretly sport kiddie gear. I’m just the first to come clean.
While I’ve never exactly been embarrassingly outed like Michael Scott, I’ve had some close calls. There was one time at a Bertucci’s on Long Island, when I was wearing the same red, black, and gray fleece as an obnoxious grade-schooler a few tables over. For the full duration of my meal, his parents chuckled as the boy pointed and mocked me.
My other nail-biter came last winter, while mingling at a media mixer in Boston.
“I’m sorry to ask,” said a young gentleman in a bow tie and wax coat, almost apologizing for his blatant materialism. “But where did you find a Polo dress shirt with a pocket like that? I didn’t know they made those.”
In the silliest way possible, I’d feared this very moment. As the preppy reporter further observed, Ralph Lauren shirts traditionally lack a breast pocket, let alone one embroidered with a trademark Polo man. Somewhat stunned, I claimed it turned up at an outlet store a year or so earlier, which was technically true, but I still regret not being more honest. I would consider this confession a penance, but, in retrospect, I’m more proud of my thrift than otherwise embarrassed.
I’ve easily saved several hundreds of dollars, if not more, on Polo outerwear through the years, on everything from down vests to a gorgeous American flag knit. Those can go for more than $400 in big sizes, but rarely cross the $100 mark in juniors. Rugby shirts are another windfall, as the grown-up long-sleeves retail for three-times the identical $49. 50 kid selections.
Overall, I’ve had the most shopping success in the button-down department. While adult Oxfords fetch for between $89.50 and $165, the comparable boys options — I recommend the “Cotton Blake” — all sell for around $50, and are typically marked down for back to school sales. Some have an unusually tiny pocket, but that should look increasingly normal since the high-end contemporary likes of A.P.C. also favor that kind of cut.
I was ahead of my time.
For those who wish to follow my lead, gaming the department store is easy. In my experience, department store employees tend to believe I’m shopping for my giant nephew, and never follow me to the adult fitting rooms. Just last week, a helpful Macy’s clerk on the children’s floor was even kind enough to look out back for any extra-large Olympic leftovers they might still have in stock. She came up empty-handed, but suggested I check downstairs. If the boy I’m shopping for fits perfectly into a youth XL, she said, then he’s probably big enough for a men’s small.

Tables of sizes of children’s shirts | Sizes of shirts for boys in tables
We give tables of sizes of shirts for boys from popular manufacturers. See below. Separately, the standard table of sizes of shirts for teens according to the men’s size chart. Separate size tables for boys’ shirts.
Basic parameters of the size grid of shirts for boys:
Height – neck girth – chest girth
Basic parameters of the size chart of shirts for teenagers according to the size chart for men:
Height – neck girth
Dimensional grids differ by the type of shirts: suit and others.
Suit shirts for boys have an elongated sleeve reaching the middle of the palm, or a short sleeve to the middle of the shoulder, wide cuffs, a rather narrow collar for a tie. In the shoulders, the shirt sits according to the cut, i.e. the line of the shoulder fold coincides with the beginning of the sleeve, which makes the shirt somewhat constraining the movement. The length of the shirt reaches about mid-thigh so that it does not come out of the trousers.
The rest of the shirts (not dress shirts) have a more relaxed fit. The regular long sleeve goes to the base of the palm, and the short sleeve goes to the middle of the shoulder. The gate can be moderately free. The length of the shirt is different, depending on the model: to be worn for graduation or to be tucked into trousers.
Below are the size charts in the tables of branded shirts for boys:
Manufacturers sew clothes for standard children’s figures. If the boy’s figure differs from the standard, then it makes sense to first try on shirts from different companies, if nothing fits, choose one or two sizes larger or smaller, focusing on the main parameters of the shirt: collar width, sleeve length.
For more information on how to choose a shirt for a boy by size, about the features of the size grid of dress shirts, about the composition of the fabric, see our article Sizes of children’s shirts for boys.
Teenager’s shirt
Small size men’s shirts are suitable for teenagers, starting from 37 on the collar. The men’s size grid of dress shirts is different from the children’s one. Firstly, there are several sizes in height for each gate width. Secondly, there is a distinction between classic and fitted shirts.

This dimensional grid for men’s shirts is adopted in Russia and Europe. The size of the shirt corresponds to the width of the collar in centimeters. Height is also in centimeters.
The size of a men’s shirt has two parameters: neck girth (size) and height. Thus, the collar of a shirt of size 37 corresponds in fact to three sizes of shirts:
rubles 37 for height 164-170,
rubles 37 for height 170-176,
rubles 37 for growth 176-182.
The dimensions for gate 41 and more are not shown.
You can often find international letter, American, English size numbering. For convenience, we provide a table of correspondence between the sizes of dress shirts in Europe, Russia, the sizes of shirts in the USA, England, international letter size grid and Russian clothing sizes, including for non-dress shirts.

Size Europe, Russia corresponds to the width of the collar in centimeters and is measured by the girth of the neck and an increase of 1.5-2 cm for freedom of movement.
US, England size corresponds to neck width in inches (“in” in English abbreviation) and is measured by neck girth in inches plus 3/4-1 inch for freedom of movement (1 inch = 2.54 cm).
Russian clothing size corresponds to the half-girth of the hips in centimeters.
Sizing charts for branded shirts for boys
How the parameters of the dimensional grid are measured Height – neck circumference – chest circumference .
Chest, waist and hips are measured strictly horizontally.Bust is measured at the high point of the chest. The waist is measured at the level of the narrowest part of the lower back. Hip circumference is measured at the level of the highest part of the buttocks, allowing slight deviations from the horizontal to cover the widest part of the thighs. If you need to measure the half-girth of the chest, waist, hips, then always first measure the girth, then divide its value by two.

Sizes of children’s shirts | Sizes of shirts for boys
The size of children’s shirts has three main parameters: height, neck girth, chest girth.Usually these parameters are indicated on the label. The actual sleeve length, cuff width and shirt length are also important. These parameters are sometimes indicated on the packaging, as is customary for men’s shirts. Let’s consider all the parameters in order. We will also touch on the choice of material and color of the shirt.
Each factory sews shirts according to its own dimensional nets and styles. Children’s shirts are fitted and straight. This gives us the opportunity to choose a company whose sizes and cut of children’s shirts are best suited for our boy.
Typically, a boy’s shirt label has three hyphenated numbers:
height – neck girth – chest girth.
For example, 134-32-84. It is convenient when the boy is not of a standard build (tall and thin or short and plump), then we will choose a shirt for the boy, taking into account all three parameters. It is not uncommon for only one size to be indicated: height or age or letter, and the size chart with other parameters is on an additional label or on the package.Manufacturers specializing in the production of suit shirts always indicate several parameters of the size grid.
Some manufacturers of children’s clothing are limited to the usual size, corresponding to the height, without specifying other parameters. This means that the standard grid is used, i.e. the shirt should be the same size as the T-shirts and jumpers.
And this is logical, because the sizes of shirts for boys are fundamentally different from the sizes of shirts for men.The size of a men’s shirt has two parameters: collar and height. For each collar size, you can choose a men’s shirt for different heights. For children, shirts are sewn, as a rule, according to the same standard, without dividing by height. And that makes sense.
Essential for choosing the size of a boy’s shirt is its purpose.
A suit or school shirt has significant differences from others in terms of individual parameters of the dimensional grid due to the peculiarities of the suit. Therefore, it is quite possible that the appropriate size for a suit or school shirt for a boy will be different from the size of a regular shirt, for example, denim, sweatshirt, or any other that is worn with jeans instead of a T-shirt.
Let’s consider the parameters of the dimensional grid in turn.
Shirt size – neck circumference
The shirt will look on a boy in size if the collar fits the girth of the child’s neck. Neck circumference is a very important parameter in the size grid of shirts for boys. Neck circumference is measured around the base of the neck. Add 1-2 cm to the resulting size in cm. This is necessary so that the collar is not too tight. For little boys up to 6-7 years old – 1 cm.For boys 7-12 years old – 1.5 cm.For teenagers from 12 years old – 1.5-2 cm.We get the size of the neck girth. For teenagers who already wear men’s shirts, this parameter serves as a size at the same time. Sizes for men’s shirts start at 35.
Too loose shirt collar is acceptable if the boy does not wear either a tie or a bow tie, if the top button is unbuttoned. And under the tie, an unnecessarily wide collar will gather in an ugly fold. It is easy to find a suitable size for a shirt on the collar for a boy, using the old method: stick your thumb into the buttoned collar, if the finger easily passes, and the second does not fit – the size of the collar is suitable.
Sleeve length
Sleeve length is the most important dimension.
In terms of the dimensional grid, the sleeve length parameter is a secondary parameter that depends on the height and the standards of the boy’s figure adopted by the manufacturer.
But it is super important, especially for a dress shirt, how the sleeve sits on our boy.
If the shirt is suit, school, look where the upper seam of the sleeve goes. It should be straight at the crook of your shoulder. The seam is not visible under the jacket, but noticeable under the vest. Therefore, we pay attention. Other shirts allow, like T-shirts, a seam below the crease of the shoulder.
Sleeve length is measured along the arm bent at the elbow from the shoulder fold to the elbow and further past the wrist to the middle of the palm.
The length of the sleeves of the shirts again differ depending on their type.
The length of the sleeve of the shirt, which the boy wears under the jacket, should be 1.5-2 cm longer than the sleeve of the jacket. It is assumed that the cuff peeps out from under the jacket and reaches about the middle of the palm of the hand down.Suit shirts for both men and boys meet this standard.
And the sleeve length of a children’s shirt, which is worn with a vest or by itself, should only be up to the wrist, covering the wrist itself.
Therefore, when purchasing a shirt for a boy, we pay attention to the length of the sleeve, depending on the purpose of the shirt. For example, a school shirt, which a boy will wear only with a vest, it makes sense to choose a size smaller so that the sleeve does not look prohibitively long, if, of course, it will fit in fullness and shoulder width.
The length of the short sleeve of a child’s shirt is approximately half a shoulder. There is no specific standard for length, the overall impression is important. Pay attention to whether the fullness of the child’s hand looks harmonious relative to the width of the short sleeve.
Cuff width
It is accepted that the cuff of the sleeve of the shirt fits the arm. For a sleeve ending at the wrist, the cuff is narrower. For the sleeve that goes down from under the jacket, the cuff is slightly wider – along the width of the middle of the palm.
The width of the cuffs of a shirt for a teenager is determined taking into account the wristwatch. For younger boys who do not wear watches, it is clear that they can be ignored.
Many models of children’s shirts have an adjustable cuff width, for example, two buttons.
It may be difficult for young boys to open the cuff on their own. Children often put their hand through the buttoned cuff. Considering this method, the cuff should not be too tight.
Shirt length
If the boy is wearing a graduation shirt, then the shirt should not be too long.Length to mid-thigh and above is suitable.
If the shirt is tucked into trousers, which is mandatory for dress shirts, in particular for school uniforms, then the shirt should be 15-25 cm below the belt. Small boys need 15 cm below the belt, adolescents need 20-25 cm. Moreover, the lower button should be 5-10 cm below the belt. Such dimensions are needed so that the shirt does not come out of the trousers and that the T-shirt does not open on the belt in the area of the buttons.
Buttons
An important moment for little boys and not only.
Buttons sometimes create a unique design for a shirt, but it will be very frustrating if they are difficult to button and unbutton. For a young boy, tightly fastened buttons, small and frequent buttons can become an insurmountable obstacle, and such a shirt cannot be worn. Older boys also appreciate the comfortably buttoned buttons.
When purchasing a shirt, check how the top button and buttons on the cuffs open and close.
Shirt color
A suit shirt according to etiquette should be lighter than a suit. The color of the shirt should be in harmony with the color of trousers, jacket, vest, watch strap. The shirt can be plain, striped or in a small pattern. Plaid and large pattern are typical for non-dress shirts. Many boys have their own preferences for the color scheme and type of shirt design. We will listen to the opinion of our boy so that he feels comfortable and confident.
Fabric of a shirt for a boy
The ideal composition of the fabric of a children’s shirt is 100% cotton. A good quality cotton shirt will not shrink, will not be covered with pills, is quite abrasion resistant.Cotton shirts do not shine after ironing. The boy is not hot in it, but warm. It is not for nothing that the price of a children’s shirt made of pure cotton is 2-3 times higher.
Out of habit and in comparison with a T-shirt, a shirt may not seem very comfortable to a boy. Nice, soft, high-quality cotton fabric will smooth out this shortcoming.
Shirts with a fabric composition containing polyester are common:
- 80% cotton and 20% polyester (PE),
- 70% cotton and 30% polyester,
- 40% cotton and 60% polyester,
- 60% cotton, 37% polyester, 3% elastane

DIY sewing for beginners
Children’s clothing is always distinguished by originality in terms of colors. But at the same time, the cut is completely identical to adult things. To make your baby’s shirt unique in all respects, you can sew it yourself. To do this, you need to take measurements, make a pattern of all the elements and sew the parts together.
Taking measurements
In order for the pattern of the children’s shirt to be correct in terms of size, you need to take measurements from the baby. The following parameters are required for sewing a shirt:
- Chest circumference. The measuring tape should be positioned so that it is in the place of the largest bulge.
- Waist parameter. The measurement is taken at the narrowest point.
- Hip girth. Measure the bulging point along the buttocks.
- Neck. Place a measuring tape at the base of the body part.
- Back length – the distance from the 7th cervical vertebra to the waist line.
- Front Length to Waist – Position the tape from the base of the neck to the waistline across the chest.
Self-sewn shirt
- The depth of the armhole is from the 7th vertebra of the neck to the bottom of the shoulder blade.
- Width of the armhole.
- Arm length. From the end of the shoulder to the wrist with the arm bent.
- Wrist circumference.
- Shoulder Width – From the end of one shoulder to the other.
- Back width. Measurement is taken on a straightened back through the center of the shoulder blades. This is a horizontal line.
Scheme for taking measurements
Pay attention! In the process of making any thing, it is imperative to measure the growth of the crumbs. This technique will help you more accurately determine the size of the thing.
It is imperative to write down the obtained parameters so as not to get confused in the measurements, using special designations.
Simulation
A shirt pattern for a boy is prepared after the style or cut of the thing has been determined. It can be not only the classic version of the product. You can create a shirt that will be worn over a T-shirt, turtleneck and worn at the release. If necessary, you can even sew a Russian shirt, which will complement the folk costume.
After that, the initial sketch is simulated, which may look something like this:
An example of modeling a shirt
The easiest way to create a model for making a Russian shirt with all the decor elements.
Cutting parts
The pattern for a shirt for a boy is a complex consisting of diverse parts. Usually cut out separately:
- front shelves:
- backrest;
- collar;
- sleeves;
- pocket;
- sleeve cuffs.
Complete ready-made pattern
It is better to work separately on each part, and then make a general assembly of the sketches.
Construction of a shirt sleeve
If a non-kid’s beach shirt is being made, the sleeve pattern will be much more difficult. The general scheme of the sleeve construction is the following scheme:
Modeling sleeves on the general scheme
Naturally, it is worth transferring numbers with already defined measurement parameters to such a basis.
Sleeve cuff
The sleeve cuff can be different, there are several variations:
- straight single;
- lapel with buttons;
- cuff for cufflinks;
- narrow cuff;
- one-piece with a button;
- for cufflinks with extension.
In order not to complicate the construction, it is worth choosing a straight ordinary cuff. In this case, the construction is carried out as follows:
Construction of a regular cuff
This cuff can be sewn to tapered or pleated sleeves. Fold the cut-out cuff in half, with the right side in the middle and stitch the sides, turn it over to the right side, baste and sew along the bottom of the sleeve.
Shoulder section
The construction of the shoulder section is formed in a matter of minutes. From the point defining the top of the neck cut on the front shelf, through the point defining the slope of the shoulder, draw the shoulder line. Additionally, you need to add 1.5 cm to the measurement for processing and seam formation.
Additional information! The cut of the shoulder for the T-shirt is built in the same way.
It is advisable to make notes with a pencil of a different color in order to highlight this construction among other elements of the pattern.
Backrest layout
In order not to get an ordinary blouse with an incomprehensible cut, it is worth using the classic version of building back lines:
- A vertical line is laid down from the top of the neckline on the front strip.
- From the end of this line to the right, draw a horizontal straight line until it intersects with the armhole line of the back of the shirt.
- From the point of intersection, 1 cm is laid down along the armhole line and connected by a smooth line with the yoke line.
An opposing fold can be modeled along the back of the product. It is necessary to add 4 cm to the fold in the center of the back. Now the part will be cut with a fold in the center of the fold.
Neck
Usually, only the front part of the neck is built, which is then transferred to the back part:
- Determine the symmetrical point on the front shelf at the top of the neckline on the back.
- From this point you need to draw a straight line equal to 1/3 of the neck circumference to the shelf.
- You also need to lower the straight line, which has the same length + 0.5 cm.
- Connect the obtained points with a concave line.
This can also be used for beachwear.
Shirt collar with stand
A stand-up collar can be constructed as follows:
Construction of a stand-up collar
It is necessary to carefully transfer all measurements to the workpiece. This will help recreate the correct shape for the element.
Boy’s shirt: master class
How to sew a children’s shirt with your own hands for beginners, the patterns of which will be completely simple, not many people know:
- Pick up a simple sketch. Choose quality fabrics.
- Take measurements from the child. Take into account the peculiarity of textiles.
- Make a simple pattern.
- Transfer patterns to fabric.
- Overcast cuts and join all parts.
- Sew on fittings.
Making a thing
This is a list of stages of work on making a given thing. When designing each pattern of all components, it is worth choosing the simplest options.
Processing technology
Each piece must be processed so that the threads do not fray through the sections on the fabric. This can be achieved as follows:
- Pull out all the threads that have come off at the cuts.
- Overlock all cuts. For this it is worth using a sewing machine.
- Next, all the parts are assembled, forming the silhouette of the product.
- It is necessary to work out all the connecting seams on the parts.
Preparation of patterns
Important! To prevent the threads from fraying too much, you must initially select the correct thread direction.
First, you need to connect all parts with a basting seam or safety pins. This technique will help preserve the integrity of the composition.
Pocket finishing
Patch pockets are an integral part of the entire shirt design. You need to make a pattern of the element in accordance with the following technology:
Pockets for shirt
The option of processing and construction is completely elementary, therefore it will become available even for a novice seamstress.
A child will look irresistible in a shirt that has been sewn with his own hands. To do this, you can design a pattern of the product, gradually creating details. It is worth choosing the simplest forms of cuffs, pockets, sleeves and collars. It is worth taking care of high-quality processing of all details.Additionally, you need to make a high-quality assembly of the product.
