This is our fourth and final release for 2022. This issue features four cross-national comparative studies. The first two papers were originally presented and published at the 5th International China Image and Global Communication Forum at Shanghai Foreign Studies University in June 2022. First article How effective are Chinese media in shaping audience attitudes towards China: Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa’s survey analysis is a longitudinal comparison of three surveys of African residents’ opinions about their attitudes towards China in the context of the growing presence of Chinese investment and media in these countries in 2017-2021. Study authors Dani Madrid-Morales and Herman Wasserman found that the use of Chinese international media in Africa is still at a low level, with little increase over the period. However, those who have used Chinese media have a more favorable opinion of China than those who have not.
The second article from the forum is this work by Cole Highhouse Chinese Content on TikTok: The Impact of Social Media Videos on National Image. This study analyzes the 100 most viewed Chinese videos on TikTok and examines the impressions American students have of Chinese content on TikTok and their perception of China’s national image. The author found that most of the China-related TikTok content in the US has a positive attitude towards China, and that those who believe that China videos are genuine and China-US relations are good are more likely to form a positive perception of the image. A study by Claudia Kozman, Clement Y. K. So, Sahar Khalifa Salim, Mostafa Movahedian, Jana El Amin and Jad Melki compares four countries/regions on selective sharing and avoidance of social media users during protests in China (Hong Kong), Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. They found that users who supported the protests in four countries/regions were more likely to share posts in support of the protests and avoid posts against the protests than those who oppose the protests. Those who support the protest are more introverted than those who oppose the protests by building their own echo chambers.
Xiaoqun Zhang “Broadband, Efficient Labor, and Economic Growth During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Data Based on a Cross-Country Survey is a cross-national comparison of 2020-2021 economic growth data for 201 countries. The author found that economic growth in countries with higher mobile broadband penetration is less affected by the epidemic during the COVID-19 period, when efficient labor was lower due to the unavailability of broadband internet.
Work by Mathias-Felipe de-Lima-Santos and Wilson Ceron Racism, death and protests in Brazil: Digital and traditional news coverage of Black Awareness Day on Twitter after racist crimes is a study on anti-racism protests in Brazil. The article illustrates how Black Lives Matter has become a global movement, and shows that digital media and regions with large black populations are much more progressive and broader in their coverage of protests against racism than traditional media and regions with fewer the black population.

The article by Elena Vartanova, Denis Vladimirovich and Anna Gladkova On the issue of the representation of conflict in modern academic discourse is an interesting, updated overview of conflict research in Russia in in contrast to Western conflict studies from the original article published in 2021. Particularly given the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, this review offers an insight into how the interaction between media and conflicts, conflict research methodology, types and key themes of conflicts are similar and different in Russia and the West, as well as the limitations of modern conflict research, especially the lack of ethics and morality.

Purpose of Study
This paper measures the frequency with which audiences in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa visit Chinese media and examines whether there is a positive relationship between English-language Chinese media attendance and attitudes toward China.
Methodology
This study analyzes three waves of survey data collected in 2017/2018, 2020 and 2021 (N=5876) in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
Findings
According to our data, although Chinese state-owned news media have a growing but limited audience, the minority of media users reporting that they receive news from Chinese media have a better attitude towards China than those who don’t.

Our results show that China’s external communication activities can achieve their goal of improving the country’s image abroad, provided that the media reaches a wider audience.
Value
This paper overcomes some of the limitations of previous studies on the perception of Chinese foreign communication practices in Africa (i.e., small sample sizes, insufficient distinction between increased media presence and increased exposure, and the use of indirect as well as not direct indicators of media use to infer likely impact on African public opinion).

2. Chinese content on TikTok: The impact of social media videos on national image

Abstract
Purpose
The recent social phenomenon TikTok has changed the media landscape and fundamentally changed the way people interact with content. This study looks at and explores the ways in which this new type of personalized and often raw content can present an image of China.
Design/Methodology
This study uses content analysis to first examine the type of content on TikTok and then conduct a survey to try to find a link between China’s national image and social media consumption habits.
Conclusions
The most viewed China-related TikTok videos depict the country and people in a mostly positive or neutral tone, with an apparent variety of content. National image was positively correlated with participants’ perceptions of the authenticity of China-related content, liking for the videos shown, and positive perceptions of US-China relations.
Practical values
Nations may become increasingly concerned about how they are portrayed on social media and how they can be used as a tool to shape images and opinions. As these content platforms continue to transform, there will be a constant need to reassess the power and potential they hold.

Target
This study examines the use of social media by individuals during protests in China (Hong Kong), Iraq, Iran and Lebanon.
Method
Surveys in four countries assess the relationship between people’s attitudes towards protests and their social media bias, manifested in selective sharing and selective avoidance.
Findings
Despite the differences in political and media systems in each country, the use of social media was largely similar. Overall, our results showed that people’s attitudes towards protests were related to their selective behavior when sharing information; those who rated protest support highly were more likely than those who rated protest rejection to share news supporting the protests, and vice versa. In terms of selective avoidance, the use of protest news on social media was found to be the strongest predictor. The more people followed and shared protest news on social media, the more likely they were to selectively avoid it by hiding or deleting comments, deleting friends or not following people, blocking or reporting people posting comments with which they do not agree.
Meaning
In terms of electoral exchange, our findings are consistent with existing research that has shown that people with strong attitudes about certain issues are more likely to express their opinions on social media. With regard to selective avoidance, our study confirms literature evidence that people practice selective avoidance in order to clear their environment of information that contradicts their attitude, especially on social media, and especially during protests and crises.
Value
Selection bias places people in isolated groups and promotes political division and polarization. Research focuses on online selective exposure and offline selective avoidance, but online selective avoidance and communication have rarely been studied. Our study contributes to new research on selective exchange and selective avoidance on the Internet during a period of polarization across countries.

Goal
This study attempts to explore the mechanism of the impact of broadband on economic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the different impact of fixed and mobile broadband on economic growth during this period.
Design/Methodology/Approach
This study uses panel regression and cross-country data to estimate the impact of fixed broadband and mobile broadband on economic growth.
Findings
Mobile broadband penetration and mobile broadband network size are positively and significantly correlated with economic growth rates in 2020-2021.
Practical values
Findings have policy implications: governments should promote mobile broadband, especially 5G, to sustain economic growth during a pandemic.
Social impact

5. Racism, death and protests in Brazil: Digital and traditional news coverage of Black Awareness Day on Twitter after racist crimes

Abstract
Target
On November 19, 2020, a man was brutally murdered security guards for a supermarket chain located in a city in the very south of Brazil, home to the largest the world’s African-black community outside of Africa. The murder sparked protests across the country as a black man was killed the day before Black Awareness Day. This large-scale popular mobilization took place at the end of 2020 and was reminiscent of the protests of George Floyd. Despite the anger that has gripped communities in Brazil and abroad, social media coverage has led to an unfair distribution of editorial space between affective and critical dimensions. Because users often use view-based practices of not clicking on social media content shared via URLs, it is important to understand how news media portray content in short text posted online.
Findings
The results show that the Brazilian news media are evaluating different perspectives on the death of Mr. Freitas and subsequent events. While mainstream media tends to be more neutral in its coverage of the protests and the killing, digital media have raised the debate on the issue and on racism in the country, covering the protests and using supportive hashtags. In addition, cultural hybridity can be seen in Brazil through the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.
Practical and social implications
In a media system that shares some similarities with the American one, such as high media commercialization, our research demonstrates the importance of digital media in articulating racial issues and segregation in Brazil.

Issues such as news media coverage of social movements and the impact such coverage can have on protesters and their ability to win public support is a long tradition of sociological and communication research in wealthy Western democracies. But studies on how news frames are used in Brazil are still less common. In addition, the paper shows how the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement hybridizes with local issues and gains momentum in digital media. This study aims to fill this gap by being the first to examine how the news media portray social movements against racism in Brazil.

The article also discusses the theoretical issues of the mutual influence of media and conflicts, considers theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of conflicts, as well as the types and key subjects of conflicts that have become the subject of empirical research of scientific articles published in leading domestic and foreign academic journals in the field of media. In the discussion based on the results of empirical research, the question was raised about the need to cultivate ethical and moral values in the media in accordance with the theory of communicative action by J. Habermas, as opposed to the anti-value of the conflict.
