History of the University of Maryland
Today, the University of Maryland is very large and developed, with a rich infrastructure. However, this was far from always the case – before becoming successful, he went through a long path of becoming.
March 6, 1856 is considered the birthday of the prototype of the modern institution. On this day, permission was given by the government of the state of Washington to establish the Maryland Agricultural College. After 2 years, the construction of the campus began, especially for him, the politician Charles Calvert bought the site. The civil war brought serious damage to a private institution – it lost land and began to work according to a reduced scheme. In subsequent years, the complex of buildings of the institution grew and was renovated after a fire in 1912. 1916 brought dramatic changes: the college in Maryland was made completely public and opened education in it for girls.
By 1920, the establishment acquired a close-to-modern look. The college is being converted into a university, and the doctoral degree is awarded for the first time. The number of students reaches 500.
With the end of World War II, the University of Maryland is once again being transformed. The number of its students grows to 10,000, and African Americans are beginning to enter their number. The quality of teaching standards and requirements for students are increasing dramatically.
