How did the Saskatchewan Rush perform in their last home game of the season. What made Laine Hruska’s start significant for Saskatchewan lacrosse. How did the game unfold, leading to an overtime victory.
Hruska Makes History as First Saskatchewan-Born Starter
The Saskatchewan Rush concluded their home schedule for the 2022-23 National Lacrosse League (NLL) season with a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory against the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday. While the win was exciting, the game held even greater significance for local lacrosse fans. Laine Hruska, a native of Warman, Saskatchewan, made history by becoming the first Saskatchewan-born player to start a game in goal for the Rush.
Hruska’s journey to this milestone moment began when he was drafted 13th overall by the Georgia Swarm in the 2020 NLL draft. He later signed a free-agent contract with the Rush in 2022, setting the stage for his historic start. The young goaltender’s performance did not disappoint, as he made 36 crucial saves throughout the game.
Hruska’s Path to the NLL
- Drafted 13th overall by Georgia Swarm in 2020
- Signed as a free agent with Saskatchewan Rush in 2022
- First Saskatchewan-born player to start for the Rush
Intense Back-and-Forth Battle Leads to Overtime Thriller
The game itself was a nail-biter from start to finish. Both teams traded goals throughout the contest, with the Rush maintaining a slight edge for much of the game. Robert Church played a pivotal role for Saskatchewan, notching a hat trick and giving the Rush an 11-8 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
However, the Mammoth refused to go down without a fight. Colorado’s Eli McLaughlin put on a remarkable display of skill and determination, scoring three consecutive goals in just three and a half minutes to level the score at 11-11. This late surge set the stage for a dramatic finish to regulation time.
Key Performances
- Robert Church: Hat trick, including the game-winning goal
- Eli McLaughlin: Seven goals for Colorado, including a late hat trick
- Laine Hruska: 36 saves in his historic start
- Dillon Ward: 37 saves for Colorado
Church Delivers Overtime Heroics for Saskatchewan
With the score tied at 11-11, neither team could find the back of the net in the final 52 seconds of regulation time. The tension in the arena was palpable as the game headed into overtime. It didn’t take long for the hometown hero to emerge, as Robert Church needed just 1:28 of the extra period to score the game-winning goal, sending the Saskatchewan fans into a frenzy.
Church’s clutch performance not only secured the victory but also capped off a memorable night for the Rush and their supporters. The overtime winner was a fitting end to Saskatchewan’s final home game of the season, giving fans a thrilling sendoff until next year.
Playoff Hopes Dashed, but Pride Intact
Despite the excitement of the overtime win, the Saskatchewan Rush will not be advancing to the NLL playoffs this season. This reality adds a bittersweet note to their final home game, as fans and players alike must wait until next season for another shot at postseason glory.
However, the team’s resilience and determination in securing this victory demonstrate their commitment to finishing the season strong. The Rush have shown that they can compete with playoff-caliber teams like the Colorado Mammoth, providing hope and excitement for the future of the franchise.
Looking Ahead
- Rush to conclude their season on April 29 against Las Vegas Desert Dogs
- Off-season focus on building for next year’s playoff push

His journey from local prospect to NLL starter showcases the growing talent pool in Saskatchewan and the potential for homegrown players to make their mark at the highest level of professional lacrosse. Hruska’s performance in this game, making 36 saves against a strong Colorado team, proves that he belongs in the NLL and has a bright future ahead.
Potential Impact on Saskatchewan Lacrosse
- Increased interest in youth lacrosse programs
- More opportunities for local players to pursue professional careers

On the positive side, the Rush demonstrated resilience and the ability to perform under pressure, especially in the overtime period. Robert Church’s hat trick, including the game-winner, highlighted the team’s offensive capabilities.
Defensively, Laine Hruska’s 36-save performance in his first start for the Rush provides hope for the future of the team’s goaltending. However, allowing Colorado to erase a three-goal deficit late in the fourth quarter indicates that there is room for improvement in maintaining leads and closing out games.
Key Takeaways from the Game

- Solid goaltending from Laine Hruska in his debut start
- Need for improved game management in late-game situations
- Ability to perform under pressure in overtime

The emergence of local talent like Laine Hruska, combined with the offensive prowess of veterans like Robert Church, suggests that the team has a solid foundation to build upon for the future.
As the Rush prepare for their final game of the season against the Las Vegas Desert Dogs on April 29, the focus will undoubtedly shift to the offseason and preparations for the 2023-24 campaign. Key priorities for the team may include:
- Further developing young talent, including Laine Hruska
- Addressing any weaknesses exposed during the current season
- Potentially acquiring new talent through trades or free agency
- Strengthening the team’s ability to close out games and maintain leads
- Building on the positive aspects of their play, such as offensive production and resilience
As the Rush bid farewell to their home fans for the season, the excitement generated by this overtime victory and Hruska’s historic start will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. The challenge now lies in translating this momentum into sustained success for the upcoming season and beyond.
Community Impact and Fan Engagement
The Saskatchewan Rush’s final home game of the season not only provided excitement on the floor but also highlighted the strong connection between the team and its community. Despite missing out on the playoffs, fans turned out in force to support their team, creating an electric atmosphere that undoubtedly contributed to the Rush’s overtime victory.
The historic start of Warman native Laine Hruska adds another layer to this community connection. Seeing a local player succeed at the highest level of professional lacrosse can inspire young athletes and further strengthen the bond between the Rush and Saskatchewan lacrosse fans.
Building on Fan Support
- Continued community outreach programs
- Youth lacrosse initiatives to develop local talent
- Fan appreciation events to maintain strong support
- Leveraging social media to keep fans engaged during the offseason
As the Rush look to the future, maintaining and growing this passionate fan base will be crucial. The excitement generated by games like this overtime victory against Colorado can serve as a foundation for increased community involvement and support in the seasons to come.
In conclusion, while the Saskatchewan Rush’s 2022-23 season may not have met all expectations, their final home game provided a thrilling conclusion and reasons for optimism. From Laine Hruska’s historic start to Robert Church’s overtime heroics, the Rush demonstrated the talent and resilience that can propel them to future success. As they prepare for their final game and look ahead to next season, the Rush can build on this positive momentum to strengthen their team, engage their community, and pursue their goal of returning to the NLL playoffs.

This one — a 14-6 sizzler — came in Saskatoon for a third win on the 2022-23 National Lacrosse League season over their neighbours to the east.
And this one came thanks to the hot hands of forward Tanner Cook, who served up a whopping six goals on the night.
Article content
“It was fun,” said Cook, with a chuckle, after the game. “The most fun part was seeing the game progress — like the defence making great plays and the offence are coming down and scoring one after the other and everybody’s smiling and smacking each other after we score. Everybody was smiling, and that was the best part to see.

“And it’s absolutely fantastic to beat the Rush (again). There’s nothing better.”
It wasn’t just Cook with big offence in ’Toon Town, either, as teammates Jesse King and Dan Taylor also stepped up with multiple snipes — the captain with four goals, and Taylor with a hat-trick.
Meanwhile, with all that action in the Rush end, lost on the evening was another outstanding goaltending effort from Christian Del Bianco at the other end. The superstar goalie made 44 stops for the victorious Roughnecks.
All told, the win ran the Roughnecks to 10-4 on the campaign and pushes them to the cusp of a playoff berth.
“We don’t look at the scoreboard, standings-wise,” said Roughnecks head coach Curt Malawsky. “We just play the one in front of us. It’s a really big thing to play in the moment.”

The Riggers were in the moment from the opening face-off to take control of this one.
Beginning with King’s goal five minutes in, the visitors beat starting goalie Alex Buque three times in a span of 2:39, with Cook and Taylor netting the second and third goals to chase the starter and bring in backup ’tender Eric Penney. To round out the first quarter, veteran defender Curtis Manning got up in the rush in transition and scored off Jeff Cornwall’s pass, giving the Roughnecks a 4-0 advantage.
“We wanted to make sure we had possession, zap their momentum and take the crowd out of it a little bit,” said Malawsky of the early success. “I thought we did a good job possessing the ball and giving ourselves good chances, and Delbs made good saves early to let our offence settle in.

“It’s important to start on time … If you can get a good jump to start, it’s really tough — I’ve said for years — to play catch-up in lacrosse.”
The second frame started with a pair of Rush goals — from Mike Messenger and Ryan Keenan. But Taylor’s second goal of the night on a quick-stick shot stopped the home side’s rally for a moment. At 5-2, Mark Matthews beat Del Bianco through the five-hole to give the hosts life again. However, Cook started to heat up with a pair of counters — including one by out-muscling a defender and scoring with one arm — and King connected for his second after being left all alone with time in front of Penney to restore a commanding lead at halftime.
With his team up 8-3 to start the second half, Cook then ensured the decision early in the third quarter with three consecutive goals to post the sock-trick. His first came on the power play followed by tallies off feeds from Tyler Pace. The Rush could only answer with Ryan Church’s late goal in the frame, as the Roughnecks opened up an 11-4 lead through three stanzas.

While Cook cooled off in the final frame, it was Taylor and King taking over offensively, as the Calgary kid turned the hat-trick before King posted a pair of power-play goals for the visiting side. Goals by Rush forwards Church and Dan Lintner — on the power play — proved way too late, too late to round out scoring.
Cook dished out a game-high seven points, while King finished with six, as did Pace — all assists.
“It was a pretty complete game in a tough building against a good team,” said Roughnecks GM Mike Board. “Christian was outstanding in net, our defence played hard and physical, and our offence put the ball in the net. Everyone stepped up to get a very important win.”
And it wasn’t the first biggie against the rivals.

Earlier on the schedule, the Roughnecks wrecked the Rush 13-6 at Scotiabank Saddledome. And then came the St. Patrick’s Day party last week, when the Riggers scored an 11-6 triumph over the Saskatchewan squad.
With three losses hung on them by the Calgary crew — especially these two in a row — the Rush are in danger of missing the NLL playoffs. They’ve fallen to 5-8 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Roughnecks are rolling, with opportunities next Friday both to clinch a post-season spot and move into first place in the NLL’s Western Conference, when they face the West-best San Diego Seals (10-2) in Southern California (8 p. m., TSN.ca).
QUICK STICKS
D Shane Simpson was a late scratch ahead of Saturday’s game. He missed a few games earlier in the season due to injury … The other scratch in Saskatoon was F Zach Herreweyers … D Ethan Ticehurst (lower body) was also sidelined for the Roughnecks on Saturday night.
