It was a blast to develop the visual style of this series, mixing up a variety of archival images, movie clips, and production stills to reinforce why Keanu is a cut above the rest.

Ryan Powell | Urban Studies and Planning

Profile

I joined the Department of Urban Studies and Planning in September 2016 as Reader in Urban Studies and was Director of Research for USP until September 2021. Prior to joining the department I worked for 14 years at the interdisciplinary Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University. I was awarded a BA in Economics and Public Policy from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2002 and I subsequently studied part-time for an MA in Human Geography (distinction) at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2006.

My academic background and orientation is multidisciplinary and cuts across urban studies, sociology, geography, planning, history and politics, but my research is focused on urban marginality.  I have always worked in a genuinely interdisciplinary environment and benefited greatly from exposure to a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches.  I have worked on studies for the EU, ESRC, JRF, the Big Lottery Fund, DWP, CLG, Northern Ireland Executive, Scottish Government, Welsh Government, regional bodies, and various local authorities and charitable organisations. 

I am affiliated to the Sheffield Migration Research Group and iHuman research institute within the University of Sheffield.   Externally, I am a member of the Management Board of the international journal Housing Studies and a Fellow of the Norbert Elias Foundation. 

I welcome enquiries from research students and post-doctoral candidates but am particularly interested in research in the following broad areas: Gypsy-Traveller and Roma stigmatisation; migrant youth and cities; housing and urban inequalities; class and place.

Research interests

The central theme of my research is seeking to combine empiricism and theory in understanding the socio-dynamics of unequal power relations and their consequences in terms of urban marginalisation, both contemporary and historical. This includes access to housing and employment as well as wider questions of citizenship, urbanization, and the stigmatisation of “outsider” groups.

This reflects a commitment to striving for an objective understanding of the development of contemporary society and its unequal outcomes, alongside an explicit engagement with public policy and the challenges it faces. By extension, this often entails the exposure of policy “myths” and critique of the inadequacy of current conceptualisations.  A distinguishing aspect of my research is sensitivity to a long-term perspective in terms of capturing the dynamic and intergenerational development of human societies and the cities they produce.

Presently I am working on two EU2020 projects, centred on advancing our understanding of migrant youth urbanisms and migrant “integration” within the EU, with Sheffield colleagues in Sociological Studies and various European partners.  I am also involved in a collective project (with Jay Emery, Lee Crookes et al.) on re-theorizing class – Feeling Class: Emotions, Bodies and the Affective Politics of Social Inequality, which will be published as a monograph and edited collection for The Sociological Review in 2023.

Teaching activities

My primary teaching focus is on urban marginality, housing issues and the challenges facing cities and publics in the contemporary period.  Housing is approached as a lens through which to understand a wide array of urban inequalities, antagonisms and environmental challenges.  Yet is also a key field for innovative solutions, radical collectives, and alternative readings of universal concepts like home, shelter, dwelling, neighbourhood and sustainable city.   Housing is therefore a site of struggle and contestation, of technological advancement and exploitation, a source of self-worth and stigmatization, and a potential anchor for alternative ways of inhabiting and orienting ourselves in an increasingly complex, interdependent and dynamic urban context.  Effective housing policies require solutions across Global North and South.

Adviser to the head of the President’s Office Serhiy Leshchenko shared an interesting detail about the visit of the widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs Lauren Powell Jobs to Ukraine and her meeting with the president.

Ukraine was visited by Lauren Powell Jobs, an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, owner of The Atlantic magazine and widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs. She spent three days in Kyiv with The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg and publicist Ann Applebaum. They met with the President of Ukraine and the head of the presidential office, Andriy Yermak.

Adviser to the head of the presidential office Sergei Leshchenko shared the details of this visit on Facebook. He revealed an interesting detail of the security rules during a meeting with the President of Ukraine during the war. According to strict rules, no gadgets, including iPhones, can be brought into the room where the president is. Therefore, even a person with the last name Jobs, the widow of the founder of Apple, was not made an exception.

“From a curiosity, it can be said that due to security rules, no gadgets, including iPhones, can be brought into the room where the president is. All mobile phones are guarded. There are no exceptions for anyone – not even for a person with the last name Jobs, ”he wrote.

And he explained why Lauren Jobs’ visit to Kyiv was not widely publicized. He also noted that, unlike politicians, Jobs’ widow spent almost three days in Kyiv.

“Being a private individual with no flaunt on her life, Lauren Jobs kept her trip under wraps, even though it was already talked about after her first posting in The Atlantic. This visit was an act for a female billionaire, given that not even all male politicians dare to visit Kyiv now. She traveled half the world from Palo Alto in Silicon Valley and broke the rule of international leaders not staying more than 12 hours in the capital. Lauren Jobs spent almost three days in Kyiv, heard air raid alerts dozens of times and met with the country’s leadership,” Leshchenko said.

And added that an interview with the President of Ukraine would soon be published in The Atlantic magazine.

It is known that during the meeting between Lauren Jobs and Volodymyr Zelensky, they discussed the development of the Ukrainian IT industry and the work of the DIA public services portal. In particular, the President of Ukraine spoke about the successful counteraction of Ukrainian IT to Russian cyber attacks, which have been going on since the beginning of a full-scale war.

Zelensky noted that Ukraine will continue to develop the digital industry, which has proven its resilience and effectiveness during Russian aggression. He is confident that after the war, the IT industry will help develop entrepreneurship faster, help eradicate corruption and simplify interaction between citizens and government institutions.

The post generated a lot of comments about Ryan, and Whitney bluntly confirmed that they were no longer working together. “What happened to Ryan?” – asked one of the commentators. – Is he more of your partner?

“No,” Whitney replied. That’s about all Whitney had to say about Ryan in the comments, as most of her responses confirmed her joy in working with Jessica in the future.

Jessica will be familiar to fans My Big Fat Fairy Life as she was featured on the show. Jessica’s dad William Powell has also made multiple screen appearances as Whitney’s coach. The father-daughter duo work at Will’s The Fitness Zone in Greensboro.

Earlier this month, Whitney announced that she was moving again, with all indications that she was returning to the Greensboro area. A new business partnership with Jessica seems to confirm this.
