Salima Mukansanga broke through several career barriers and worked at the Africa Cup of Nations
The referee from Rwanda also has extensive experience in men’s competitions. She has served the national championship since 2018, and in January of this year, she officiated the CAF group stage match between Zimbabwe and Guinea, becoming the first female referee in this tournament.
Mukansangi’s hobby was initially treated with caution: they did not want to be accepted into the local federation because of their young age. Having officiated the women’s world championship in France in 2019, the judge from Rwanda was preparing for the next one – in New Zealand, it will be held in 2023. But FIFA gave her a surprise by including her in the list of referees for the tournament in Qatar.
Most likely, we will not see Mukansanga on the field either, but she is only 34, which means that Qatar is not the last World Cup in her career.
Assistant referees from America have long been in men’s football
The appearance of female assistants in big football happened much earlier than the main referees. Brazilian Neuza Back has been refereeing in Serie A since 2009.of the year, American Catherine Nesbitt has been in MLS since 2015, and Mexican Karen Diaz Medina has been in the MX League since 2016.
Nesbitt and Medina have been Assistant Referees in World Cup Qualifiers, have worked at international matches in their respective confederations.
