Goal Ronaldo, Compostela – Barcelona – 1:5, video, La Liga 1996/1997 – September 22, 2020
Sport24 editorial
0003
September 22 Brazilian Ronaldo is 44 years old. During this time, the great Zubastik managed to win more than 30 team and individual awards, become one of the best strikers in the history of football and acquire a solid belly. Now the smiling Brazilian takes part in charity tournaments, plays poker, manages Valladolid and enjoys life. He has nothing more to prove on the football field.
However, things were different 24 years ago. In 1996, the Brazilian striker was still playing for Barcelona, only dreaming of the Golden Ball and was incredibly motivated. It was then that Zubastic scored one of the most beautiful goals in his career.
In October 1996, Barcelona Bobby Robson came to visit La Liga outsider Compostela. At the modest San Lazaro stadium with 13 thousand spectators, the Catalans tore the hosts to pieces with a score of 5:1. In that meeting, the main character was the 20-year-old Ronaldo. He scored two goals, one of which went down in history.
In the 36th minute, Ronaldo picked up the ball in the center of the field, covered it from the defender Chiba and ran to the goal of others. Along the way, the Brazilian played midfielder Ramon and defender William, and then created free space for himself in someone else’s penalty area and drove the ball into the near corner. Beauty!
This goal gave Ronaldo a powerful boost. By the end of that season, the Brazilian had scored 47 goals in all competitions, received the Golden Boot and became the top scorer in La Liga. Thanks to the striker’s crazy performance, Barça won the Cup Winners’ Cup and the Spanish Cup.
Ronaldo soon moved to Inter, where he received the nickname Phenomenon and his first Ballon d’Or. And five years later, the striker moved to Real Madrid, where he became a real legend.
What Ronaldo said about the goal
After that match, the young Brazilian was laconic. He modestly described his masterpiece in five sentences.
“The emotions were the same that I experience every time I score a goal. I like all my goals. Today I just got the ball in the center of the field and ran into the free zone. I think I scored a similar goal in Brazil. Nevertheless, I am very happy, ”said the Brazilian.

How Ronaldo was praised
But the eyewitnesses of the great goal did not skimp on emotions. Barcelona head coach Bobby Robson was especially impressed. When the Brazilian celebrated a goal scored, the Englishman clutched his head in surprise.
“Ronaldo reminds me of Pele when he was young. In our time, you will not find a football player who can score goals like today. Can someone show me a player better than Ronaldo?” Robson admired the Brazilian at a press conference.

Ronaldo and Barcelona defender Sergi Barjuan praised him.
“The fog prevented me from seeing Ronaldo’s goal, but I still grabbed my head when he scored. I was amazed because it seemed impossible. This goal combines the best qualities of Ronaldo: strength, speed, dribbling and shooting. He ran very fast and was unstoppable,” admitted Barkhuan.
And this is how the vice-president of Barça Nicolau Casaus described the masterpiece of the Brazilian.
“This is the most beautiful goal I have ever seen. Ronaldo is a magician”

Even Ronaldo’s rivals were delighted with his pass.
“I would applaud Ronaldo’s goal if I was sitting on the podium,” Compostela defender William admitted.
“He slowed down and then accelerated again. When I saw him approaching, I thought, my God, this guy is incredible. I didn’t even think that he would get to me. He had to cover a long distance. Five of my comrades were on his way. But he did everything he had to do, and he succeeded. I tried to parry his shot, but I didn’t have time to react,” said Compostela goalkeeper Fernando Peralta.
Moreover, Zubastik’s goal was also admired by the chief referee of the meeting.
“I am very pleased with my role in this goal. I could whistle for fouls on him several times, but I let him continue the attack. My God,” Victor Torres admired the passage of Ronaldo.
How Ronaldo was hated
However, not everyone liked Zubastik’s goal. The president of Compostela, José Caneda, was so disappointed by the defeat that he began to flog nonsense in front of reporters.
“Ronaldo’s goal was crap. Stumbling, he nevertheless broke through to the gate. If I had been there, I would have probably pushed him. And we would still see if he scored or not, ”Jose Caneda argued.
20 years after that match, Ronaldo himself tried to increase the number of his haters.
“To score goals like this, you have to have peripheral vision. Besides, you have almost no time to think. It was a great goal, but to tell you the truth, I would have preferred to have scored it in a Real Madrid jersey than Barcelona. It is a pity that this did not happen, ”admitted the Brazilian in 2016.
Of course the Barcelona fans were furious. Below are the most interesting reactions of Spanish fans to Ronaldo’s statement.
VIBRADORESHOT: “Ronaldo is a fat man. He says that it would be better if he scored a goal in a Madrid T-shirt. Obviously, someone paid him for these words.”
“I was so fat in Madrid that I would never have scored such a goal. ”
“Children, don’t drink Coca-Cola. You can end up the same way, without the neck.”
“This statement is a confirmation of your flat encephalogram. Poor, ungrateful bastard. As a person, you are garbage and a pontorez.”
“What happened to Ronaldo if he made such a stupid comment.”
How Son repeated Ronaldo’s goal
Of course, that masterpiece at San Lazaro is still not forgotten. In December 2019, Jose Mourinho remembered Ronaldo’s goal. The reason was a chic pass by Son Heung-min in the game with Burnley (5:0). The Korean made it from his own penalty area to someone else’s goal, running away from seven opponents!
“Even before this goal, my son called him Sonaldo. Today he was Sonaldo Nazario. It was this goal that came to my mind today. I was lucky to sit next to Bobby Robson when Ronaldo Nazario scored a similar goal.
It was an important game, we achieved an important result. Plus, we pleased the fans, were able to let the youth out on the field and not miss. I am happy with everything,” said Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho.
In August, Sona’s goal was recognized by the Premier League as the best goal of the season. The memory of Zubastik’s exploits is alive.
