Paying for higher education, unlike many other purchases, is odd because the sticker price means very little. Most students and families are not paying the full cost-of-attendance. According to a research report from Sallie Mae, 48% of students used need-based grants to pay for college. This means that the actual cost of college for these students is lower than the sticker price.
The big problem for students and families is that colleges do not send official financial aid award letters until after a student is accepted. If you are a student who wants to maximize your financial aid options, this is not ideal. Luckily, there is a tool called the Net Price Calculator that can help you predict need-based financial aid and in some cases, merit scholarships!
Jump ahead to:
What is the Net Price Calculator?
The Net Price Calculator is an online tool that calculates the “net price” or cost after taking into account need-based financial aid of a particular college.
As a math equation, this is what it looks like:
Each college in United States has an individual calculator that allows students and parents to enter personal financial information (income, size of household, etc.) and calculate an estimate of need-based financial aid.
This will show you the real cost of attendance taking into account need-based financial aid (and in some cases, merit scholarships).
Where can I find the Net Price Calculator?
Each college actually has their own calculator! We compiled a list of Net Price Calculators many colleges and universities that you can find at the bottom of the post. However, you can also find them on the financial aid section of the college website.
How do I use the NPC?
To get started with the Net Price Calculator, students will need access to basic financial information about their family. It can be useful to go through the NPC with a parent or guardian.
The NPC will take between 20 and 30 minutes to complete (some of them are more extensive than others). We recommend that students and parents sit down to fill out the NPC together. It can also be very helpful to have recent tax information available.
How accurate is the Net Price Calculator?
The Net Price Calculator is not an official financial award letter and some calculators are more accurate them others. That’s why there can be some variation between the NPC and your actual financial aid award letter (especially if any financial circumstances change). However, the calculators should be accurate within a few thousand dollars.
Students will need to submit their FAFSA, CSS Profile, and other required financial aid materials to be considered for financial aid. Merit scholarship, which we will talk about next, may also require additional applications or essays.
Net Price Calculator & merit scholarships
When it was first created, the Net Price Calculator was designed to focus on need-based financial aid. However, since then, some colleges have added additional sections to help estimate merit scholarships for students.
Here is one example from Ohio Wesleyan University:
You can see that Ohio Wesleyan asks questions about a student’s GPA and testing. This will help the admissions office determine whether a student may qualify for specific merit scholarships.
As with the need-based financial aid, this is just an estimate and students will need to receiver their financial aid award letter to officially receive their merit scholarship.
Nonetheless, this is a useful way for students to see what type of merit scholarship award that they might expect to receive.
Note that only some colleges will allow students to estimate merit scholarships, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see that option on a specific college’s net price calculator.
Net Price Calculators by college
One misconception about the Net Price Calculator is that it is a single calculator. Instead, every college or university has their own calculator. While there may be other more general tools to estimate financial aid at a particular college or university, the college-specific Net Price Calculator is the most accurate resource for students and parents.
Below you will find the Net Price Calculators by college or university:
Key next steps for students
- Complete the Net Price Calculator for every college on your list before you apply to that college!
- Submit the FAFSA and CSS Profile by the required deadlines.
- If you are applying for any merit-based scholarships, you may have to submit additional materials.

Purdue University – College Confidential
In 2021, tuition for full-time students at Purdue University was $9,208 a year for in-state students and $28,010 a year for out-of-state students. On average, college tuition rises about 3 percent a year.
If these numbers feel scary, remember, the “sticker price” of tuition doesn’t give you enough information to determine the actual cost. Many students pay far less than the total tuition after grants, scholarships, and tuition discounts kick in. Plus, student loans can make the amount you do have to pay for college more manageable.
Tuition for international students at Purdue University is $30,010 per year.
In-state vs. Out-of-state Tuition at Purdue
Purdue University is a public, state institution, so it offers a reduced tuition rate of $9,208 for in-state students who attend full-time. For students who are not considered Indiana-residents, out-of-state tuition is $28,010 a year.
Public schools receive funds from the state to help them cover costs. Public, state schools can offer lower tuition for students who meet the requirements for in-state residency.
Choosing a college where you qualify for in-state can cut the cost of college tuition. Each state has different requirements to qualify as in-state resident. In many states, students must have lived in the state for 12 months before starting school to qualify for in-state tuition
Explore other Indiana colleges
Purdue International Student Tuition
Purdue has the same tuition for international students as for those from out of state.
International students at Purdue University can expect to pay around $30,010 per year, before any scholarships or financial aid.
International students are not eligible for federal financial aid, but may be eligible for school-specific aid and scholarships.
Purdue Living Expenses and Other Costs
In addition to tuition, there are other costs associated with college, like room and board, facility fees, and books and supplies.
Room and Board at Purdue
Room and board at Purdue is $10,030 a year. This includes the cost of living in dorms or other campus housing, plus a meal plan that allows you to eat in the school dining facilities.
Board costs may vary depending on how many meals are included in the meal plan you choose.
Cost of Books at Purdue
The cost of books often surprises first-year college students. At Purdue, you can expect to pay about $1,160 a year for books and supplies. This does not count the initial cost of a computer or other technology. The actual cost of books depends on the courses you take and the materials required.
Yearly Fees
Most schools also have fees to help cover the cost of facilties, like the library, gym and computer labs. Full-time undergrads at Purdue pay $784 in fees each academic year.
There may also be optional fees associated with participating in certain activities, like joining a fraternity or sorority, or playing on an intramural sports team, may mean additional fees.
Transportation costs
The total cost of transportation in college can really vary. It depends on if you drive or fly to get to school, own a car, or if you prefer to walk or take public transportation to get around campus.
A school’s location can impact transportation costs. The Purdue University campus is in a suburban setting in Indiana, not far from Indianapolis. First-year students are allowed to park a car on campus.
Other College Costs
When creating a budget for college, don’t forget to leave some room in your budget for personal expenses, like entertainment, clothes, furnishings and toiletries.
Let’s look at the breakdown of all expenses, which can add up for both on-campus and off-campus students.
How much does Purdue cost?
2021 Total Tuition and Expenses | |
---|---|
In-state Tuition | $9,208 |
Out-of-State Tuition | $28,010 |
Room and Board | $10,030 |
Books and Supplies | $1,160 |
Yearly Fees | $784 |
Other expenses | $1,630 |
Tuition and fees may vary depending on program, course level, location, and more.
Purdue’s tuition and fees change based on:
Academic program for part-time students
Course load for both full and part-time students
Purdue University Financial Aid
The majority of Purdue undergrads use financial aid to to cover the cost of tuition. In 2021, 12,089 of the 34,920 undergrads enrolled received financial aid. Purdue meets 77.6 percent of the demonstrated financial need for undergraduates.
The average financial aid package for a full-time, first-year student is around $12,939 a year. Around 41.35 percent of Purdue undergrads take out student loans to cover any remaining costs. Purdue graduates who have student loans graduate with an average of $28,793 of student loan debt.
The average debt for each loan type varies.
Average Debt By Loan Type | |
---|---|
Federal Loans | $18,783 |
State Loans | $0 |
Purdue-Specific Loans | $5,950 |
Private Loans | $37,119 |
Most Common Loans for Purdue Students | |
---|---|
Federal Loans | 39.38% |
Institutional Loans | 13.22% |
Private loans | 10.01% |
Most students take out institutional or government loans, because they tend to have lower interest rates and more flexible repayment options than private loans. Loans from the federal government can be subsidized or unsubsidized. Subsidized loans do not accrue interest during school, while unsubsidized loans begin accruing interest at the time the loan is issued. If students do no qualify for enough federal loans to cover the cost of tuition, some take out private loans. Parents can also take out ParentPLUS loans, which are government loans for parents who are helping their children pay for college.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) helps colleges determine how much financial need students and their familes have, so they can offer a financial aid package that meets, or come close to meeting, their need. For more information on Purdue financial aid, keep reading, or visit their financial aid website.
Scholarships at Purdue
Some students may receive grants and scholarships to help pay for college. Unlike loans, scholarships and grants do not have to be paid back.
In 2021, Purdue awarded 9,284 need-based scholarships to students, giving away total of $112,069,667 to help students with financial need cover the cost of school. An additional $45,257,831 in merit-based scholarship money was awarded to students without demonstrated financial need.
Purdue University Net Cost
The net price of college is the actual cost of attending a school for one year. Net cost is calculated by subtracting any scholarships, grants or other aid that does not need to be paid back from the total cost. Student loans are not part of the calculation, because they need to be repaid.
Now that we have a sense of the total estimated costs for Purdue students, we can subtract the average financial aid package to find the estimated net cost. Net cost can vary depending on a students’ need and the financial aid award received.
When considering whether a school fits your budget, it is important to consider the estimated net cost, not just the sticker price of tuition. Often, schools with the highest tuition also offer the most generous aid packages, so estimate your net cost before eliminating a school because it does fit your budget.
The average amount of financial aid received by a full-time first year student with demonstrated need at Purdue was $12,939 in 2021. By substracting the average financial aid package from the estimated costs, we get a number that may make the cost of Purdue seem more manageable.
Estimated Net Cost for Full-Time Students | |
---|---|
Out-of-State, On-Campus | $28,675 |
What will attending Purdue really cost you? The answer depends on several factors.
As of 2011, colleges are required to have a net price calculator on their website to help prospective students and their families understand the actual cost of attending that school, based on their financial situation. You can find the Purdue’s net cost calculator on their website.
Purdue Tuition Payment Plans
Some students choose to use payment plans to make the cost of tuition fit more comfortably in their budget.
Purdue does not have guaranteed tuition.
The school offers a Prepaid Tuition Plan, which is a type of college savings plan that enables people to purchase future credits for their children at today’s rate. It is best for people who are sure they or their child will attend a public school in their state.
Purdue offers an Installment Payment Plan, which allows students to pay tuition in a series of smaller chunks instead of one lump sum.
Does Purdue University offer tuition waivers?
Schools sometimes offer tuition waivers to certain groups to cover some or all of the cost of tuition. Some schools offer them for employees and their family, underrepresented students, or military students. Even with a tuition waiver, other expenses and fees are the responsibility of the student
Purdue has some full or partial tuition waivers available for:
Employees or Children of Employees
Check the financial aid website for more information on payment plans and tuition waivers.
Paying for Purdue University (Main Campus)
Purdue University offers many ways to help students pay for their education at the University. Students are encouraged to fill out their FAFSA forms early to be considered for as much need-based aid as possible.
In addition to freshman merit scholarships, the Division of Financial Aid at Purdue University awards need-based aid to students. This aid comes in the form of a package that can include federal work-study, scholarships, federal, state, and institutional grants and federal/private student and/or parent loans. Purdue is proud to provide students the Boiler Affordability Grant which is a grant available through Purdue University for undergraduate students and based upon need. Purdue provides links and information on outside scholarships for students looking supplement their tuition bill even more. Additionally, there are financial aid opportunities for military students, those wishing to studying abroad, international students, and transfer students.
Students can find out more information about federal work-study job opportunities as well as non-work-study opportunities for part-time employment through the student employment office.
Students who are thinking of pursuing their education during the summer may be able to receive summer aid.
Purdue University’s Purdue Research Foundation offers a unique funding program to help students who may need additional funds to help pay for their Purdue education. The Back a Boiler Income Share Agreement (ISA) provides limited funding to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who need additional help paying for college. It prevents students from having to supplement with student or parent loans. Once an ISA is established, the funds that are made available are then required to be paid back after graduation (with a bit of interest) and based on students’ incomes. Students are then able to pay back the funds with flexibility and not under the duress of student loan payments and stress. Students are encouraged to check out the Income Share Agreement (ISA) program and its Frequently Asked Questions. Even incoming freshman will find this information helpful because they, too, will be upperclassmen in no time.
Students can access several tools and informational resources through the “Before Accepting Loans” page. There is also a helpful resource to maximize scholarship consideration in addition to a Purdue University net price calculator and a loan fee calculator that is available to prospective students.

90,000 how to calculate tuition fees using an online calculator on the websites of American universities
Let’s consider how to calculate the cost of a program using an online calculator using the example of the University of Houston.
Step 1 . Indicate student status: Out-of-State (resides outside the state where the university is located).
Step 2. Specify specialty – select from the drop-down list.In our example, this is Natural Science & Mathematics.
Step 3. Indicate the level of the program – Career Level: undergraduate (bachelor’s) or graduate (master’s). In our example, undergraduate is specified.
Step 4 . Indicate the number of credit hours you plan to borrow in one semester. On average, a bachelor’s degree requires 15 credit hours per semester or trimester, for a master’s – 6 or 9. Select the appropriate number from the drop-down list. For more information on how the academic year in the United States is organized, see here. How to find out the cost of training on the websites of American universities, as well as the methods of calculating the price – here.
Results of calculating the cost of training using the online calculator
We received a table showing the main costs and the approximate total cost of training. The total cost per semester is indicated by the heading “Estimated cost per semester” in the line “Total” – $ 13’091.
The intermediate lines indicate the main items of expenditure that the university must include in the cost: tuition fees and basic student fees, as well as other mandatory fees – service fees, for the use of the university infrastructure, for health classes, sports and fitness. As you can see, accommodation is not included in the total amount.
In the bottom two lines, under the heading “You might qualify for a fixed tuition rate”, it is indicated that the university provides several cost options – fixed for the entire period of study or annually increasing.
Every year the cost of tuition in all US universities rises, and it is more convenient for some students to evenly distribute payments over 4 years of study – even if they pay a little more for the first year.
For examples of the cost of programs in US universities, see here, a list of inexpensive US universities is presented here.

Study of carbon nanotubes using the AUC methodDuration: 1 hour 21 minutes Velocity sedimentation (SV) experiments on dispersed nanoparticles are an effective tool for determining the properties of nanoparticles that are difficult to assess.During the webinar, Dr. Jeffrey Fagan highlights the value of the unique capabilities of SV scoring techniques for characterizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The results detailing the use of density contrasting methods for characterizing the interfacial layer on certain types of SWCS confirm the suitability of analytical ultracentrifugation for its resolution. Dr. Jeffrey Fagan collaborates with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and discusses the AUC OSUN and provides background information applicable to other nanoparticles. At the beginning of the webinar, Dr. Fagan provides an introduction to the AUC and briefly explains the nature of the AUC. He considers objects for which AUC can be used to characterize, the associated problems and complexities, and the possible variation in the nature of the complexities depending on the type of nanoparticles. Finally, he gives two technical examples of the use of AUC when working with OSUN. English |

In the last decades of the XVIII century.in England, for the first time in the world, machines began to be widely used in industry. This was a major step forward in the development of mankind (see p. 305).
In our time, under socialism, each new machine facilitates the work of people and increases the well-being of society. It is a different matter under capitalism, in a society divided into exploiters and exploited. The appearance of machines there brought new troubles and suffering to the working people. Previously, when there were no machines and the production was carried out manually, it required physical strength, dexterity, skills, sometimes acquired as a result of long training.Mainly men were engaged in the manufacture of industrial products. The very first machines were extremely simple in design. Women and children could work for them. The capitalists preferred to hire them. Children could be paid significantly less than adult men; children could not resist the manufacturers and protect their interests.
For many years, the growth of English industry was due to the cruel exploitation of labor, not only of adult workers, but also of hundreds of thousands of children.
The hopeless need forced the parents to send their children to the factory hard labor. Children of seven, six and even five years old worked in factories. Work began at half past five in the morning and lasted until 8-9 pm, that is, 14-15 hours a day. In days of industrial fever, when the demand for goods increased, the working day lengthened. There were times when work began at 3 am and ended at 10 pm. With difficulty in the morning, the parents of their children, exhausted by overwork, raised them.It was impossible to be late, for this the overseers brutally beat the young workers.
During the whole working day the children stood by the cars. It was strictly forbidden to sit down. It was impossible to talk, to be distracted from work.
The factories produced cotton fabrics. The workrooms filled with the suffocating smell of a mixture of machine oil, cotton dust, and grease candles. Cotton dust so saturated the air that everything seemed like a fog. Small figures swarmed along the long lines of cars.Tall wooden blocks were tied to the kids’ feet so that they could reach the cars. Outside visitors to the factory were immediately struck by the exhausted look of the children: their faces were wrinkled in old age or painfully puffy, their eyes were lifeless or full of melancholy.
Twice a day there were half-hour breaks for meals. But even at these moments the children worked: they lubricated the stopped cars. They swallowed the meager food they brought with them on the go.
The torment of the children became unbearable in the evening, when fatigue and exhaustion were especially evident. An involuntary slumber closed their eyes. Every now and then the overseers used the whip.
Children grew up frail and weak, many of them had bent legs and spine from standing for a long time behind a car. Little workers were often seriously injured.
Children worked underground, in mines. There they loaded coal into trolleys and rolled them on rails. The smallest ones opened and closed the air dampers. The aisles in the mines were often so low that you had to crawl on all fours, tying the trolley to your belt and passing the belt between your legs.
Female and child labor replaced male labor. Many working-class families subsisted on the pennies earned by women and children. It happened that the child was the only breadwinner of the whole family, and the adults tried unsuccessfully to find a job.
